I and many other Hollywood journalists were sufficiently outraged when, one year ago, Disney/ABC’s movie criticism show once hosted by Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, and then Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper, was put into the unworthy hands of Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz, both of whose primary claim to fame was nepotism. Fortunately for viewers, At the Movies now has jettisoned the two lightweights for two heavyweights again starting September 7th: The New York Times‘ A.O. “Tony” Scott (photo, left) and The Chicago Tribune‘s Michael Phillips (photo, right). “We are thrilled that A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips will be lending their well-respected and influential voices to At the Movies,” Daytime president Brian Frons said in a statement. “They are regarded by millions of people as authorities in film criticism and will take the series back to its roots of one-on-one film debate that was established when the show first began with Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.” My question: Which of them is going to plug every Disney pic? Or will they take turns?
Contract Disputes End Ebert-Roeper Duo: Claim To Fame Of New Hosts Is Nepotism

Isn’t hiring two more men nepotism?
Hooray! I hated the Ben & Ben combo but these two guys were the best fill-ins for Ebert when he was out. I still miss Ebert/Roeper but this is an excellent combo!
I’m thrilled with the new line-up, but doesn’t anyone feel a little bad for Ben Lyons? The dude’s getting his ass ripped apart everywhere I read.
I’ll definitely give these guys a try. I loved the Siskel and Ebert days. This looks like a return to form for the show. No disrespect to Roeper, but the chemistry wasn’t the same. I didn’t even know who the other two were.
AO Scott’s the “competence?” Yeah. Uh-huh. Should have gotten Anthony Lane. Or Manohla Dargis.
Great move. I was a regular viewer – until last year. At least, occasionally, the powers-that-be can realize a mistake and then fix it.
See Washington? It’s not so hard.
Everyone knows A.O. pines for Pixar, not its corporate stepfather.
Redoing the show as they did was one of the most DOA programming decisions to come down the pike in like…forever. Even so, Mankiewicz at least conducted himself more than reasonably well and displayed the learned perspective that the show was originally built on. Lyons…not so much. I wonder if the brilliant tacticians that pulled the trigger on the show will suffer any of the arrows that they deserve though.
Don’t answer that.
Finally
I can watch this show again! Great Choice in AO and Michael…( they really got the show down from repeat hosting slots ) & for the record- MP is a great critic and he has quietly started gaining steam here in Chicago..I can’t wait to see these guys go at it again..and Screw Richard Roeper! He never got it.
Thank God! Ben Lyons made me want to rip my eyeballs out and shove them in my ears.
This is fantastic, they will do a great job. They do need to get better at context. Twilight was an average film but for its target it was almost perfect.
The original At the Movies realized that show was for a broad audience and layered in the geeky film stuff. I worry these guys will be overly geeky and not provide the broad info needed.
ANYBODY is Better than the Two Bens (Though I gotta admit, Mank was at least Tolerable at best.). Break a leg, Tony & Mike
And once again, they couldn’t find a female critic? Really? It would just be nice, after so many years, to have a slightly different perspective on that show (and one would think it would make for more interesting discussions…).
I’m not familiar with Michael Phillips’ work and Tony Scott, like all the Times film critics, is worth following, all of them in their own unique ways, but two white guys arguing? Again? Nice potentially audience-widening change-up Disney! The Industry thanks you! (No disrespect intended toward the credentials of either critic. Best wishes to both.)
Glad to see that Buena Vista had enough confidence in the show to replace the hosts, rather than kill it entirely. In Mankewicz defence, he wasn’t that bad, but being paired with a fanboy hurt him.
Also, Ebert has mentioned that he had a program lined up with Roeper, Phillips and Christy Lemire. I wonder what’s going to happen to that show now.
though AO Scott continued the Ephron love-fest today in his review of Julie & Julia:
“Ms. Ephron, a literary and journalistic star before she was a filmmaker, is unequivocal in her celebration of the joys of such triumph.”
strangely, the blurb on the front page of the NYT website makes it seem like a glowing review.
but he basically says it’s an average, uneven movie.
AO Scott is no Anthony Lane but I expected a better review.
Ben Lyons knows nothing about film. Nothing!!! This is an important day for all hard working passionate people. Ben was passionate about become famous. Now he is well known for being a big, gaining weight, failure. Nice guy though.
Thank you.
stopbenlyons.com = best.website. ever. this guy is a total hack; he belongs back on E!
JL – Maybe he “Pines for Pixar” cause they are the only ones making decent movies…
Finally. Ben Lyons SUCKED! When he reviewed Every Little Step he said that “there was too much singing and dancing.” WTF? It was a movie about singing and dancing what did he expect? He needs to go find a brain now that he is unemployed.
@adam
reading one review doesn’t a meta-critic make.
anyone concerned with Tony’s ability to dumb it down need only check out his video reviews on the NY Times site.
he can do it all, high-brow criticism (which is Manola’s forte, but has she ever met a mainstream movie she wouldn’t pan?!) and mainstream reviews (yes, he loves Pixar, but don’t they nail it every time?!).
Tony Scott is a bomb film critic.
Scott is an excellent critic. I agree that he knows film history but can also appreciate well made mainstream commercial fare.
p.s. with all due respect to Anthony Lane who is a very fine critic, New Yorker publishes once a week and Lane shares duties with David Denby. Cherry picking a movie or two a week is hardly the output required at the Times. I’m just sayin’…
When they hired a female critic I’ll watch this show again.
Two white males again? Wow. How about a female film critic?
