Okay, I’ll admit a Michael Moore movie can be somewhat entertaining.
But you’re playing a little loose with the term “Docu”
aren’t you? Then again the Academy of Arts and Sciences has determined that a “documentary” need not be factual (I’m paraphrasing but that IS the gist of what they have publicly stated).
Sometimes I feel like Oliver Douglas in Green Acres and the entire world around me is nuts.
Amen.
I’ve enjoyed Moore’s work in the past, but this looks really annoying. Walking in to AIG HQ, supposedly to make a citizens’ arrest, but really just to get footage of his being turned away, looks like childish grandstanding. I really hope this isn’t indicative of the rest of the film.
Playing MIA “Paper Planes” in your trailer is stale at best.
It worked for PINEAPPLE EXPRESS a year ago. A year ago.
God, this looks tired. The fat guy in the lobby (who’s actually a millionaire), berating people with a bullhorn.
He’s going to say that big business bought the government. But it’s a lot more complicated than that.
This is going to have all the ‘truth’ of his 9/11 film, where he did that crappy Bush with the Arabs sequence – which could have been done with any president. Or much worse, his faux appall at being questioned across from the Saudi Embassy by the Secret Service, trying to imply that they were getting special treatment — without mentioning that the secret service is the security authority for all the embassies in DC. And let’s not get started on all the fakery in Roger and Me.
This guy is the high school class clown. The problem is that he’s been out of high school for 30 years, but is still playing the same games, telling the same jokes.
I love all the commenters so far who believe they could do it so much better than Michael Moore.
Do it.
I love the way A Former Fan knows exactly what’s going to happen in the movie before even seeing it! Michael Moore is a filmmaker and is very good at what he does, know matter what you call it, comedy, drama, doc, or docudrama. If you don’t like it, go make your own movie!
You are correct because of capitalism we can go make out own movie. Good idea. I wonder if Moore is going to give away the money he makes (if any) from this film. Probably not just keep being hypocritical. If he loves the health care, economic environment and administration of a socialized country why not just move there. I am sure him and Stone could get a house together.
Looks like Matt Drudge directs his readership of narrow minds to this site every time anything even remotely political is being discussed.
Conservatives, attack, attack, ATTACK! Even if you have to bend the truth, or flat-out ignore it in the process.
And Liberals don’t do the same?! “Making Up” truth, is not the same as showing truth.
Sure “Michael Moore the character” is getting a little annoying, but you have to admit, Moore does great research and explains complex sociopolitical issues well. I learned things I didn’t know from Sicko and Fahrenheit 9/11 and honestly, I haven’t seen a really clear, well-done explanation yet of what exactly went down in the financial meltdown, in layman’s terms, and what we might be able to do to avoid repeating it. Hope this will be it.
Even though his movies are unapologetically one-sided there are always tons of reviews and conservative blogs poised to helpfully point out where they think he got it wrong, so it’s not like you’re going to be permanently misled or anything. and THEY’RE not making any other effort to explain this stuff to America. I’m looking forward to it.
No Zack, some of don’t believe we can do better than Mr. Moore; some of just choose not to beleive Mr. Moore’s faux sincerity in doing this for “the little guy”. And, frankly, many of us are just plain ol’ tired of his blovating.
I find Sasha Baron Cohen’s transformation most impressive…
I love all the commenters so far who believe they could do it so much better than Michael Moore.
Do it.
Nobody said they could do it better, they just said he’s dishonest. What part of that is hard to understand?
Conservatives, attack, attack, ATTACK! Even if you have to bend the truth, or flat-out ignore it in the process.
One does not need to bend the truth to show that Moore’s methods are tired and dishonest. One does need to ignore the truth to say otherwise. Or they could do what you’re doing, and just throw some empty blanket criticism over anyone who dares question the man.
I love the way A Former Fan knows exactly what’s going to happen in the movie before even seeing it!
Er, he’s going off what’s in the trailer, actually. And the fact that he can tell you what’s in it beforehand is kind of the point. Moore’s going to masquerade as a plebian champion by doing little more than barging into offices without an appointment.
Michael Moore is a filmmaker and is very good at what he does, know matter what you call it, comedy, drama, doc, or docudrama. If you don’t like it, go make your own movie!
Michael Moore is good at editing; this does not make im a good filmmaker, but regardless, I don’t see too many people criticizing his filmmaking prowess, just his honesty and his methods.
The fact that his defenders keep arguing points that aren’t under dispute is pretty telling, as are the silly “oh yeah? Go make your own movie!” lines. Apparently I need to go to film school now to point out when someone else is being dishonest. Pfft. Don’t be absurd
Damn right we want our money back. That was a straight up heist. We’re all too happy to send a fourteen year old up the river for stealing a Nintendo but when you steal really big, it’s all good.
Until we have campaign finance reform, democracy is a moot point in this country.
Thanks, as always, Michael Moore, for NOT BEING SCARED.
Got a posse here that’s got your back, brother.
People are just so burned out because of the economy, the even in a michael Moore sort of way, I find it hard to imagine anyone but die hards wanting to spend 10.50 on this. WE KNOW MICHAEL, CUBA ROCKS! (even though the country is out of toilet paper!)
I remember a long time a ago doing a shoot in Michigan. One of the free lance crew guys I worked with was on Moore’s Roger and Me. I asked him about it. He told me he never got paid. Michael Moore: Millionaire Hero of the Working Class.
“I’ve enjoyed Moore’s work in the past, but this looks really annoying. Walking in to AIG HQ, supposedly to make a citizens’ arrest, but really just to get footage of his being turned away, looks like childish grandstanding. I really hope this isn’t indicative of the rest of the film.
Comment by Dan in NYC — August 21, 2009 @ 8:07 am”
You’ve seen a Michael Moore movie before haven’t you? It’s the same technique he’s used from Roger & Me on through to this. The message is the thing to pay attention to, not the method.
It seems that the people named, “Dan in NYC” and “A Former Fan” and their elk only get annoyed when the media is able to attackvalue that they themselves aspire to, secretly long for, yet are no part of. Ignored is the destruction of people in the united states and across the globe who have their values, culture, and economies colonized. Ignored are those within the United States who are in fact the “wage earning enslaved” who believe the propaganda that they are the best, everyone else envies them/him, and those who hate us are evil.
They can ignore all of that until the power of a talented and savvy filmmaker who knows how to pull enough strings to get his film across your sensibilities. No his film won’t change their precious wet dream of the myths of meritocracy and capitalism has little to fear. But it’s truths to strike you to comment in such a fearful way is quite telling.
Chris Bowyer writes, “Nobody said they could do it better, they just said he’s dishonest. What part of that is hard to understand?”
Bowyer–
How you got “they just said he’s dishonest” out of the first 4 comments I was referring to is what is hard to understand. With the exception of Farmer Tan, no one in those comments even hinted that they felt Moore was dishonest.
You are entitled to your opinion of course. But believing everyone shares your opinion–including the first few posts I commented on– is being somewhat dishonest with yourself.
Michael Moore is full of shit. Fuck Micheal Moore and fuck Political Correctness.
“It seems that the people named, “Dan in NYC” and “A Former Fan” and their elk only get annoyed when…blah blah blah… “
Wow. Now there’s some quality pompous bloviating for ya!
I have no problem with the message Moore is trying to get across. I just think it would be nice if he could do it without acting like a 15 year old, that’s all. Yes, he’s done this in all his films. Keep doing the same act over and over, eventually it gets old.
And I can assure you, I have no elk. My co-op has rules against them.
Dan,
That “elk” comment had me laughing so hard I almost wet myself. I read that from that dude and went “huh?” elk? I think he meant to say “ilk” but is just so illiterate that it seems to justify our current education system. But when I read that your co-op wouldn’t allow elk I busted a gut. Thanks for the incredible humor. It made my night!
Hahaha..this is hysterical! Since when do filmmakers have to be honest with anyone! A film is created by a group of people to express an idea or artistic vision. Nobody is obligated to audience for anything. And nobody is obligated to see it, if they choose not too. Don’t you get it that Michael Moore does these movies to get people riled up. Hahaha, it’s working.
for christ’s sake you can hate michael moore’s idiocratic movies and still think the financial industry’s corruption of government is scandalous (and this is all well-trod territory there have been a zillion news stories and blogs covering every detail)
all this will be is a dumbed down liberal perspective on what happened, with facts defined as whatever helps moore’s punchlines…it’s sad the left thinks it needs its own fat smart-ass entertainer to mislead the rank and file, I guess that’s politics these days
Moore is dishonest. He’s also become a millionaire in our capitalist system. I would think most liberals would agree he’s just a propaganda artist at this point.
The cronyism going on with Paulson and Goldman Sachs is something that needs to be further explored, but Moore’s childish antics won’t shed light on anything.
Personally I enjoy hearing his point of view even if it’s distorted and think in this age of failed corporate controlled media we need more like it.
I do find his refusal to give the production and post production crews working for him the benefits of working under a union contract hypocritical and despicable.
Michael Moore is one of the few high profile liberal voices in media that serves as a counter-balance to lying, demonizing, right-wing blowhard hate-mongers like O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Coulter, Beck and Hannity.
I wish he could be cloned.
Anyone who thinks Moore is dishonest doesn’t have a grasp of the facts.
He’s NEVER ONCE been proven to have lied, so get the fuck over it.
