Now, which moron at The Weinstein Company thinks this is an appropriate fake trailer to hawk Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds? People are being fooled by this abomination: a trailer for a Nazi propaganda film that went up on Apple today from "Arien Productions" glorifying a hero of the Third Reich. The film "Nation's Pride" is advertised as having an exclusive engagement in Paris (at the theater where Basterds has a plot point) and the opening line of the narration is "From Reich Minister Dr Joseph Goebbels..." This isn't clever marketing, folks. It's classless.

Chill Nikki. This is IN the movie. It’s just a piece of propaganda used by Nazis in the film to make a point. RELAX.
I think it’s funny.
Thank you, Nikki. It’s one thing to make fake trailers and whatnot making fun of Nazis, but this is going one step too far.
And before anyone says “But it’s in the film!” – it’s all about context.
Yeah, I’m not sure it’s that big of a deal just on its own. Sure it’s classless. And no, I don’t think it’s that funny, either.
But then I thought Inglourious Basterds sucked, and in more ways than I expected it to.
Quentin Tarantino seems to think WWII was real cool. Just like he thinks most things where people get killed are real cool. He honestly, I’m pretty sure, doesn’t know any different or better. That’s about as deep as it goes. That’s about as deep as he goes.
I found it rather humorous, seeing as it was pretty damn fine piece of faux propaganda. and if someone some how didn’t “Get It”, that would be their problem. There isn’t anything classless about it. It is clever, actually, if you don’t have a simplistic knee jerk reaction.
I agree. Chill out, Nikki. It’s just a little digital marketing. “Spring Time for Hitler” was probably a lot more offensive, but because Mel’s a tribesman I guess you’ll forgive him.
I find it also humorous that you link to this “Classless” trailer.
it’s supposed to be ironic, like harry prince of wales in a nazi costume.
it’s all good though. have a bunch of jews scalp nazis. add brad pitt. everything kosher now.
read the script. blows. get ready for a misfire. only the ‘berg can do a good WWII movie since he’s smart enough to avoid sarcasm, irony, and parody out of respect for the era.
Yeah, nobody could tell it was a fake trailer, what with the German-speaking actors and the German narration.
Calm down. It’s not classless — it just doesn’t go far enough, in my opinion, to signal that it’s a joke. It should be a Grindhouse-level fake trailer, or have the tone of Starship Troopers or something. I think the intent will zip right past most audiences.
Did you really expect class from Weinstein?
I’m in.
Not a big deal
Eh. The entire movie looks ridiculous especially Brad and his accent. Hopefully the film’s better than it looks.
Just watched it. Wow, I was expecting something much worse after reading what you wrote. I think you need to relax …
It’s got you talking… so it worked! Wait, no…
Wow! Get the stick out Nikki
The Weinsteins assume the audience for their R-rated flick to be smarter than a 5th grader.
As DHD points out this may not be the case. “Crowned in Gloury” didn’t tip them off. Oh boy. “From Reichsminister Goebbels” didn’t do it, either? Man, that’s scary!
We could get our panties in a bunch over the state of education and hang our heads in shame. But no, let’s point the fingers at those who won’t dumb down the fun to reality-TV levels. Spoofing “brought to you by the Führer” (opening credit of Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will) may be asking a bit much, though.
Hope the controversy will do for Inglourious Basterds what it didn’t do for Brüno or Observe & Report or…. Now if only the film would live up to it…
I think it’s funny too.
I think that’s a fantastic piece of marketing. If you hear Goebbels and you don’t think it what’s up there’s clearly something wrong.
I’ve already sent this link out to like 20 people. Plus it’s been mentioned on Deadline Hollywood – a free plug from one of the industries top blogs. Now that’s what I call viral marketing.
PS. the Advertise on Deadline Hollywood link in the top left corner is currently broken.
Considering this is for a Jewish exploitation film where the payoff is watching Nazis get their heads bashed in, I think it’s perfect.
I think Eli Roth directed that video and it’s in the actual movie. It wasn’t intentionally created for marketing.
Oh yeah, great marketing! I’m sure the Nazi propaganda won’t bother all the people who lost family in WWII or who were Holocaust survivors. After all, the Nazis only made lampshades or soap out of the people they didn’t like, I guess that isn’t a problem for most of the commenters here.
Calm down, Nikki. The “trailer” is pretty tame. Tarantino didn’t even direct it. Eli Roth did. Roth has a great sense of humor and I don’t think it’s going to bring Nazi fascism back to Germany.
the movie looks lame.
The only idiots fooled by this are the inbreds sitting on their porches dueling banjos. Nikki this is nothing to get upset over.
Anyone ever hear of Mel Brooks?
I just hope your outraged response is part of the marketing,
because actually, it’s brilliant.
By the way, just for clarification, I’m a Jewish-Irish Romantic poet.
I think it’s funny NF got so riled up about it she posted the link on her website. Were that not the case I would have never known about it. It’s like eating something nasty and then saying to someone, “here taste this, it’s nasty.”
BTW the clip was good. It’s what marketing is all about.
I think it would shock you how much influence Nazi propaganda has on Hollywood movies today (seriously, the stuff is a mainstay in film schools). It does not reflect on the legacy of the Holocaust to recognize the craft involved, which I think this trailer does pretty wittily.
Yeah, I guess this “abomination” did what it’s supposed to. We’re talking about it. That said… Come on, is it that big of a deal? It’s not great, but it’s silly and clearly fake.
i think it was a decent idea, poorly executed. should have committed to the bid 100%, done it in the style of the 40’s with a german accent at least.
It this movie is a hit, expect a A-Teamesque remake of Hogan’s Heroes next…
Right now, the Weinsteins are throwing everything they can up to see what sticks on the wall to make this movie a surefire hit.
Sad to see what was once a powerhouse now having to rely on the same director who put them in power. Just for this industry, I hope they don’t go under (even if Harvey is so hated now). We need them all.
Congrats on the sale too Nikki
Curt
Is this the same woman who posts a picture of a hunter standing over a dead lion whenever she talks about Icahn and Lionsgate?
Oh come on, Nikki, this is a tempest in a Dresden teacup. You have much bigger foes to vanquish. Do us all a favor and kick Ben Silverman again.
This looks awesome! Does anyone know who’s releasing “Nation’s Pride” in the U.S.? Werner Bros.? And wasn’t “Rike Minister Joseph Gerbels” on Variety’s “10 Producers to Watch” list in ‘09?
they should have had the stones to do it in German.
2d rate idea, 3rd rate execution, 4th rate movie – 1st rate failure
you are a fool. it is obviously a joke.
the weinsteins are german-jewish anyway so effectively they are endorsing a nazi fake propaganda film as jewish men. surely they would have been the first to veto something done in bad taste.
the trailer is in the film, it is done as an obvious parody, it does not mention the nazis, it does not glorify the nazi viewpoints and the fact that he is fighting the americans pales into insignificance if you see other german made ww2 films (feature length) where they fight the americans.
also goebells has been dead for 60 years so he aint fooling anyone by making this
This is a joke I’m a little upset I was looking forward to seeing this.
I Agree with Michael… This just doesn’t work, mainly because it’s done with such modern style. A 1940’s Nazi Propaganda film would not have 3D title treatment… C’mon… if you’re going to do something like this make it fit with the time at least.
Read the script. This is a trailer for the film-within-the-film. The whole 3rd act takes place around the propaganda film for which this is the trailer.
Is the execution of this trailer’s release bad? Maybe. But outrage over it? -Completely unfounded.
The Nazi’s had some nice clear HD video back in the day.. Riiiight. Wow Nikki, you have really gotten a bit oversensitive lately.
Kinda clever idea, but it doesn’t work because it should have been in German (as is a lot BASTERDS). The “joke” doesn’t really come across as well as the great trailers in GRINDHOUSE. Overall, nein.
Regardless of the marketing – which doesn’t do the movie justice at all – this film is bloody brilliant. I just saw this film last night – note: I have no affiliation with the film whatsoever – and I just have to say wow. It’s Dr.Strangelove-Kubrick-brilliant. Certainly the best Tarantino movie since Reservoir Dogs. Watch out for Christoph Waltz – this man is going to win an Oscar. As for the trailer, the propaganda film it refers to is fundamentally part of the movie – not just some random idea cooked up by marketing – once you see the film, it makes perfect sense. FYI “Nations Pride” the-film-within-the-film was directed by Eli Roth.
…and we all know what Nikki thinks about Eli Roth and his films!
There’s so much wrong with IB from start to finish (that the concept itself promotes the argument that anything is acceptable in war as long as the other guy a) does it first (or you can convince people that they did) and b) really, really deserves it – arugments Goebbels helped pioneer, btw) why focus on the marketing?
I’m a big fan of Alois Von Eichberg’s work. Anyone see Mein Kleines Strudel?
Comment by greatestgeneration: only the ‘berg can do a good WWII movie since he’s smart enough to avoid sarcasm, irony, and parody out of respect for the era.
Thank you for saying that. Exactly what I’m thinking.
The Nazis were defeated 70 years ago — thank God — and yet these films keep coming out like pistons pumping inside an engine. I love how every time someone questions the motives behind such films, people like Cathy start writing like Jews still need to be paranoid. More like they WANT to be paranoid and they have many ways to make money from that paranoia.
When will we be seeing Israeli propaganda and films about the heroic struggle of Palestinians against the super-race represented by their AshkeNAZI overlords?
Never? Whaddya know.
As Cathy put it, I guess that just isn’t a problem for some people here.
It’s called CONTROVERSY, and it’s been selling movie tickets since the beginning of time! A better question is which genius came up with the trailer? And who is the amateur who wrote the above article! Moron!
By the way, just for clarification, I’m a Jewish-Irish Romantic poet.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Disclosure: I’m not a fan of Tarantino. Never have been. That, however, does not influence my agreeing with you, Nikki. Many aren’t seeing the bigger picture of what such a representation means.
Folks, keep in mind that there were two major Axis powers during the war and both did hideous things. Imagine the rage and vitriol from bloggers had that been from the Imperial Japanese Ministry of Propaganda, featuring a Japanese soldier killing American troops for the glory of the Empire. I guarantee you, the angry web postings off of that would have been so violent, they’d have peeled paint.
Questions of taste aside, how is dropping the name of Goebbels a Nazi and murderer of his own children going to convince people who aren’t familiar with Inglorious Basterds to see it?
world war II is over. wish hollywood would give it a rest.
it was a badass trailer be serious
Jesus Finke, get of your moral high horse, will ya?
It’s a fun idea and not to be taken seriously.
Relax, boobala. It’s satire.
People in the know (i.e., Tarantino fans) will think this is brilliant. Anyone else will just shrug and go see something else. The “Batsterds” audience doesn’t care that it doesn’t appear authentic; they just love the “irony.” Feh.
I would like to say it’s all harmless fun, however, given the level of intelligence of so many people out there, many are going to see the Tarantino film and seriously embrace inhumane treatment of people. Probably even identify with the Nazis. Have you been watching Fox News lately? Glenn Beck in particular? Cleverness is beyond the capability of such an audience.
the problem is not that this video is offensive but that eli roth directed it like a movie made this year. how could he not research the time period and try to film it as a 1940s german film? it’s not convincing at all because it’s so anachronistic.
