The NBC series Parenthood was supposed to debut this fall before the actress fell ill. Then the show was put on the midseason schedule. Now Maura Tierney has pulled out and the role will be recast. But I hear that Mercy, which was moved up when Parenthood was pushed back, is in trouble. The testing has been disappointing, and my sources have seen the documents to that effect. Gail Berman is complaining about NBC (bigwigs not supportive of the show), and NBC is complaining about her (she still thinks she’s running a network).

Gail Berman, one of the most overrated nontalents in Hollywood.
The promos for Mercy dont look terrible, however I would of much rather seen Parenthood this fall.
However these two shows look WAY better than what NBC has spewed out in recent years (i.e. Knight Rider, Crusoe, My Worst Enemy, Kings, Bionic Woman, etc) Angela Bromstad really developed broad and relatable pilots this spring. NBC’s future is semi- looking up.
Gail Berman was a genius at running a network, whomever is currently running the network into the ground has repeatedly proven they aren’t.
Maybe you should listen to her. She’s smarter and more experienced.
Come on clifton g, are you kidding? Tell me what her genius was? You can ride a show or two for so long and then you have to answer for her failings at Fox, the debacle that was Paramount and now whatever she’s doing with Lloyd Braun. Geniuses inspire and they compel you to be better than you ever dreamed you could be. They show you the way because they are always operating ahead of the curve. You devalue the word genius when you throw it out there so easily. I have no axe to grind, but the post was about the fact that the network is complaining about her operating as if she were running the show instead of doing the things she needs to do to make her show better. Trust me, if she were so brilliant she’d still be at Fox but you can’t mismanage The OC and expect to keep your job.
Hey, if the show sucks, it sucks. No reason to point fingers or blame. NBC is stupid, but maybe once in a while they know when they’ve been sold and dog and told the company it was a Cadillac. D.
I just hope that this does not bode ill for Maura Tierny, which I fear it might. It makes the young boy in me that fell in love with her in News Radio sad.
I hope this was a case of “Damn, I just survived cancer! Why in the hell would I want to do another hour long drama with the hours that entails?”
whatever about parenthood. it would have been cancelled for reruns of Jaywalking. i hope maura is ok, though. she’s a doll and a class act
Mercy isn’t bad. I’ve seen the pilot. They got a complete unknown for the lead and she is pretty compelling and fresh and she has a really interesting, sexy look and attitude.
James LeGros is a pompous and aloof doctor who you wish they gave more to do, but I’m sure they will. James Tupper is the male lead, and that guy is very charismatic without being cartoonish.
With these pilots you really have to check out the subsequent episodes, which have the benefit of a writing staff ironing things out. They have a really good staff on Mercy — folks from shows like Battlestar and Friday Night Lights and even a few former Bruckheimer types.
That said, the subject matter is a bummer — something about nursing makes people depressed. In this case NBC clearly wanted a show about three young women and their personal lives and didn’t want those young women to be ridiculously affluent, so they were made nurses. It’s pretty arbitrary in the long run because the “medical drama” stuff is not what this show is concerned with. It’s more like the Rescue Me formula of dealing with people’s interesting personal baggage. In fact the pilot was directed by the same dude who did the Rescue Me pilot.
On the tail of her wonderful and sexy short run on “Rescue Me” comes this news. I will hold a good thought for Maura as she is a very unique actor. She plays the mundane and sexless, troubled nurse on ER and then she turns around and convincingly plays the hot vamp on Rescue Me. She is funny and sad and pathetic seemingly with the same breath.
Never mind the network politicking, a beloved actress’ life is on the line here. Maura is a classy lady, and I hope she’s doing OK.
Dear PP,
You do realize that all of those projects were developed before Angela started in December, right? So while she can’t get all of the credit, she also can’t get all of the blame. The prior regime’s development executives developed this fall/midseason slate of shows.
I hope for the best for Maura. Im a fan. She did great work on Rescue Me this season. As for NBC I still think they made a huge mistake ending ER. The show still worked and attracted a solid 9 million viewers a week.On that network that is very good. I will miss that show this fall season.
chuck
Yes you right. However she is the one who took the scripts seriously and ordered pilots out of them.
Total BS. MERCY testing was actually strong. Nikke, you’re getting your info from ABC who are scared shitless about their impending implosion.
in response to Surprised?:
The person who mismanaged The OC at Fox was Peter Liguori. He replaced Gail Berman right before the OC’s third season began. Ligouri asked the show’s producers for script changes and for an actress to be included in the guest cast, and so the first scripts for Season 3 were overhauled as per Ligouri’s instructions. Go check the interviews with Josh Schwartz from around that period.
Season 3 was the worst of all the show’s seasons. Liguori had no love for the series because he wasn’t around when it was developed.
The OC was Gail Berman’s baby.
