WME Entertainment agents and staff can start to breathe easier. I’m told that these last weeks upon weeks upon weeks of cuts and layoffs and contract non-renewals and attrition are now finished following the merger. (Yes, there were some recent layoffs in the hot music department. I hear three peoples’ contracts were up.) “The layoffs are done. Complete. After just 3 months. The next phase is integration. Let’s make sure we’re integrating our clients,” WME field marshal Ari Emanuel told a TV and motion picture staff meeting last week. What that means in practice is each heavy duty client will now have multiple agents to make sure that client is covered in every area: some from the old Morris and some from the new Endeavor. That also means multiple new people will be introduced into the clients’ lives, which is never easy but necessary to a team approach to agenting. Of course, given the heightened level of skirmishing between rival agencies in Hollywood right now, reps at WME competitors are spinning this to me as a bad thing. They say agents are terrified about who will be assigned to their client’s team. Because this will allow WME to continue to downsize but keep the clients. Heck, probably both interpretations are right. All I know is that I’m relieved to stop reporting layoffs at WME. One interesting factoid: WME right now is about the same size as the old William Morris.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Don’t believe it folks. As long as there are people from E that do the same things cheaper than those held over from WM more layoffs will be on the way.
The plan isn’t complicated- the remaining WM agents like Lubliner and Kestel get two Endeavor lackeys put on each of their accounts. Different ones so it is not too obvious. Nine months later they are removed. This wasn’t a merger it was a hostile takeover.
Of course they had to stop the layoffs, there wasn’t anyone left.
And the “integration” will have to be done gently, because if a client feels jerked around by their new “team” they will walk.
Did the fired guys from the Miami off land yet?
Thank you.
Land yet? their desk chairs are still warm.
Wait, now Ari’s a “field marshal”…sorry, but there’s a minimum height requirement of 68 inches.
Nikki, Ari will simply not rest till every last vestige of WMA is long gone. Maybe, maybe a few ultra-top earners will survive (e.g. MS, CDK, whoever MPG says, etc.).
Think about it, Itkin is easily as expendable as Jim Griffin, and he has a much bigger nut (as it were). With CDK and the package commissions locking in Tyler Perry, either he takes a huge haircut, or Ari gets rid of him as well.
The strategy is very simple: separate the enemy from their clients. Reptiles like Walsh, Wellins and Muirhead look good, but it will eventually be a happier life on the outside for everyone else.
Ari thinks he’s building a better moustrap just because he goes to Teddy Forstamnn’s Aspen conference w/ Sine and Ravitch, but it just ain’t so. There is nothing for them to do. Look at CAA locking up rights to rep the IOC for 2014 and 2016 US TV rights…Ari wouldn’t even be allowed in the room. CAA used to have 2 real competitors in Endeavor and WMA; the irony is that the combination is far weaker than either of the original companies, and CAA has used the civil to broadly diversify.
Let’s go through WME’s current state:
TV: They make tons of $ on broadcast packages…gee, where is that business headed?
TV (reality): The mistreatment of JF by Ari and co., and the complete absence of any defense of his team from MAI, has demoralized the outstanding “Formerly known as Syn3 group”. Watch for more departures there, maybe to join Hans at CAA, etc. MAI is beyond ineffective and very exposed given WME’s general contempt of any formerly WMA stars, and the loss of respect from his own troops.
Film: Wow, they sure have some great movie stars…anyone have any idea how the DVD trend is affecting paychecks?…mght want to check that one out. Same for directors.
Indie Film: Graham Taylor sure wears some sweet bright red corduroys…never in a million years would I think I’d miss Cassian and Rena so much.
Consulting: GM and Nokia could walk at anytime. FACT. Dowlie is trying to marginalize Lenzini the same way Ari does w/ all WMA people…problem is that GM loves AML and thinks Dowlie is a tool who is full of himself…looks like he learned from the best.
Music: With Geiger it is now pretty much, don’t call us, we’ll call you. He was a fan of the merger early on, before he got to know Ari and co., before the ticket requests became an onslaught. Because that’s why Ari wanted music, the cashflow and the backstage passes. WME is simply not worthy of Peter and Marc, or their world class department.
Sports: Hey Dave, how’s that working out for ya? Nice Tampax gig for Serena…way to go. His defense of his troops makes Itkin look like Geiger. He will soon take himself and his bouffant hairdo (how else to get from 5’3″ to 5’6″?) home to his Maori surf school, where he can emulate his idol (DZW = Matt Damon, Steve Rabineau = Jude Law in Ripley).
Finally Nikki, isn’t it spelled “people’s?”
The latter interpretation is definitely more accurate.
There’s a ton of former WME agents still there that don’t fit with the culture Ari’s looking to create. They’re only there because of their clients, and will be let go once those clients are firmly in place.
I think with all the slimy shit Ari’s pulled before and after this merger, the only thing you can say for sure is that you if you believe what he says, you have a 50/50 chance of being right.
Congrats Ari, you’ve just created another ICM. Good luck with the (dis) integration.
They should have started “integrating” months ago. I mean jesus christ talk about distracted agents. Any other wme clients out there wondering when they’re gonna get their service turned back on?
I feel like the asshole waiting for the cable guy to show up, but instead of waiting all day, I’m waiting all fucking summer. Hey lit department – it’s called a phone – you can use it to return calls and actually do your fucking job.
come on other wme clients – what are you feeling? Make some noise!
I’m a long-time Endeavor client and I feel exactly the same way. Completely abandoned.
And I work, regularly.
I’m curious about other WME Lit clients — anyone else thinking about leaving?
Long time Endeavor Lit client here. I feel exactly the same way. Completely abandoned.

Left WME after many years. Also work regularly. I went to a smaller boutique agency and I was quickly reminded of what it was like to have a real agent/client relationship. A willingness to share packages so your options go from myopic to panoramic. Knowing I’m not being submitted for projects along with thirty other writers “just like me.” In this environment, it’s a no brainer.
why you gotta play the race card?
Let’s just say the layoff at WME are on “hiatus”.
Long time music agent Ben Bernstein was let go last week. Ben was one on the nicest guys in the business. Alicia Keys is saying bye bye to WME. Dave what’s up with that?
Be nice to the IT department…
If you believe the layoffs are over at WME, I’ve got some swamp land in Florida, beachfront really cheap…
to wme client, from another:
the problem with WME calling clients back is that they all have AT&T cell service…it’s a protective measure so they can claim they’re in a bad area…
honestly, all agencies can operate like shit or gold for their clients. it comes down to one’s relationship with one’s agent. period. doesn’t matter if it’s WME, CAA, UTA, ICM, etc., if there’s no service it sucks.
Jim just must sit at home and count his money and know that noone liked him or was willing to follow him. What was great was that he had the fat IW to rely on and noone cared about either of you. Too bad Niki is not writing a book about all this since it mimics Enterage.
Of course they’re going to integrate!
Aren’t they finished firing everyone who worked at William Morris?
Just when people hit their peak, that is when they are looking down from the mountain into the abyss. Just a warning.
WME is total bullshit and Ari has no idea what the hell he is doing.
The more things change the more they stay the same…agents at war and their clients be damned. It would be funny if not so sad but these geniuses exist because the artists they represent are completely fooled and dis-empowered. What happens if the people who really are making the money wake up and see that “the emperor has no clothing”?
