EXCLUSIVE: The company and Tom Ortenberg say he asked to leave TWC for “personal reasons”. This news comes against a backdrop of financial drama at TWC including a new round of layoffs to get the company down to 90 people. But the president of theatrical films just told me, “I asked for and was granted a release from my contract with The Weinstein Co. My last day with the company will be September 30th. I want to thank Bob and Harvey fo the terrific opportunity they gave me this past year, and I am particularly proud of my collaboration with them and the incomparable Quentin Tarantino on Inglourious Basterds which has truly been one of the highlights of my career. I will have an announcement about my plans in the near future.”
Ortenberg came to TWC in January after he left Lionsgate as the president of theatrical films. He’d been Lionsgate’s first employee in Los Angeles, opening an office in Santa Monica in 1996 staffed only by himself and a part-time assistant. Based in LA, Ortenberg was in charge of TWC’s theatrical, marketing, distribution, the whole gamut, and reported directly to Harvey and Bob.

Bless.
I guess his personal reason was that he personally wanted to be paid.
Anyway, I didn’t understand why he joined the company in the first place unless he somehow thought he could save it.
Oh well, good luck to him, he’s going to need it.
Why did Tom join the company? Because he had to buy his time and status as a studio Pres. – I’m sure he started looking for new jobs the day he started at TWC. That’s what you do when you sell your soul to the devil. You feel icky icky, and you earn a pay check from the devil while you’re looking for something else. Hey, it took 9 months, good for him.
There’s a just-opened position available for him over at Disney. He should send in an application.
Is this a joke? Any agency that allows their client to be involved with Weinstein Comp. from 2006 onwards, it’s just like feeding them to the lions. No way they will be around to release Scream 4.
I believe TWC will survive. The huge success of ‘ Inglourious Basterds ‘ proved that TWC can still open a big film.
Holy crap.
Who’s left in LA? Is Cole still around? How about Krumm and Gardini?
Tom needed a home where he could wait for another gig to become available. Bob and Harvey thought they could utilize him in the interim because of their relationship over the years. Tom learned quickly that he wasn’t about to be handed the keys to the kingdom at this location but somewhere else obviously beckons. The listing of the ship at TWC probably was all to familiar to his time at Hemdale,
The brothers Weinstein should just admit they are nothing more than producers with a checkbook, not a studio anymore. Welcome to the new economy!
Presume he’d just had enough. Good man. Knows what to do/how to do it well and as a result is really good distrib/mkter and exec. Did a great job on Basterds. Harvey deserves tons of credit but Tom ran that release — and it Quentin’s biggest ever. And there’s a reason LG’s film profile has become so confusing since he left.
I had the pleasure of meeting Tom several years ago. He was very appreciative of and grateful for folks who liked Lionsgate’s films and was obviously passionate about socially relevant films, as well as entertaining fare. I wish him well, post-TWC.
Who were the ten or so other people who got laid off on Friday? Anyone know?
Ort is a decent guy. It’s the other dickwods over there that should go (yes, Felt, I’m talking about you).
Cole, Krummy, and Gardini all left TWC almost a year ago. I’m not too sure about who-all was laid off last week other than Megan Lawrence, who was a lower-level exec in the TV dept. Also, Angela Leus in Music was let go a few weeks ago.
