UPDATES Weinstein Company Wins CAA Bidding War For Tom Ford's 'Single Man'
My understanding is that The Weinstein Company only paid $2 million for the U.S. rights to Tom Ford's debut picture A Single Man featuring Colin Firth who won best actor win at the Venice Film Festival. At first, the transaction was hyped as a "fierce all-night" bidding war between Focus Features, Summit Entertainment, and The Weinstein Company orchestrated by CAA. But both Summit and Focus expressed a lot of interest but sources claim they did not make any formal offer. So bidding war is a big stretch when it sounds like TWC may have been the only serious bidder. Indeed, Summit execs circled until 1:30 AM and then went to sleep. Focus Features also dropped out early. Harvey Weinstein clinched the deal by finding out Ford's hotel room prior to the screening, knocking on the door, shmoozing him, and then being all over him after. The clincher was Harv's passionate insistence that he would deliver Ford "an Oscar". (That's how Weinstein would get all those hot movie stars to star for puny money in his Miramax films.) Nobody shmoozes better than Weinstein on that front. But Ford never questioned Harv where the money is going to come from. Nor did they discuss how under-restructuring Weinstein Company is a gutted biz with all the recent layoffs.
Or that a slew of other promised 2009 releases have been pushed back against their filmmakers' will. Meanwhile, the buzz is that A Single Man, while a good film, is still a tricky film with an upside of only $10M gross at the U.S. box office and no more. Bidding for the adaptation of a novel by Christopher Isherwood was orchestrated by Ford's pal Bryan Lourd with Roeg Sutherland. Weinstein made his purchase after TWC's The Road was blanked at Venice. TWC also bought the German rights to Ford's pic, committed to a 2009 release, and pledged spending for an Oscar campaign.
Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
So Harvey’s throwing his weight behind this Tom Ford film for the Oscars? Does that mean they no longer believe in Nine, which was clearly made for the solely to snag little gold men in March?
If TWC’s capability to release movies are in doubt their ability to do their classic carpet bombing Oscar campaigns is in even deeper doubt.
People may invest in releasing a film, because that might deliver some return on their investment, but Oscars don’t have the same cachet they used to. It’s very rare for films to get enough of a “bump” from the Academy Awards worth the money poured into winning them.
Look, a month ago I would have said anybody but the Weinsteins. Now it’s anybody but Summit. He should have gone with Focus, but at least he didn’t let Summit fuck his film up.
Good question: where indeed will the money come from, given all we already know?
I figured Harvey’s “game” was already fairly well known that no one would be so quick to fall for his schmoozing.
The trailer for “Single Man” definitely makes the movie look like compelling viewing. At the very least, all the characters will be well-dressed!
I am willing to defer to your insight into TWC, but from where are you pulling your upside for the domestic potential for the movie? It makes me question the rest of your report.
Here’s a reality check on prestige gay-related films with buzz behind them in for domestic numbers in the last few years:
Brokeback Mountain — $83 mil
Far From Heaven — $15.9
Milk — $31.8
So where are you getting “10 mil and no more”? I remind you that Milk was a political biopic with a lot more “icky” gay sex than “A Single Man” will have. “A single man” is probably somewhere between Far From Heaven and Brokeback Mountain.
This information on comparables is readily available online. So, from where did they pull $10 mil and no more?
I guess only such a grotesquely narcissistic individual such a Mr. Ford could fall for such a trick. It seems like they deserve each other. Good luck with that Oscar. I’m sure by now he has rehearsed his acceptance speech in front of the bathroom mirror over 10,000 times…
Okay, here’s the truth. There was no bidding war. Summit was mildly interested, as was Focus – but in truth CAA played old Harve like he was a fiddle and they the fiddlers. THEY WERE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO A BIDDING WAR. And believe you me, Ms. Finke, if anyone would have come in with even close to $2million (but under) they’d have JUMPED! No one wanted Harvey. Least of all Brian Lourd. But, you dance to the fiddler when it’s the only music available. Oh Harvey, you could have gotten this for half the price and much less work.
While you were sighing the relief of victory, CAA was sighing the relief that someone bought.
There was a time when that was a less hollow claim, but that is what Harvey’s promises every director, every time. Not only has Harvey lost his pull, but with 10 possible winners this year, all bets are off.
The Road wasn’t “blanked”. It received a lot of praise. It all depends on the taste of the jury what films will win, some years it is really strange other years the films that win deserve it. Everyone on the festival circuit knows that. Especially at Venice, the awards are always bizarre! The Road will go on to be nominated for Oscars.. adapted screenplay, Viggo, dp, score. Its a depressing film but a great one.
But selling another film to TWC I agree is questionable. The Single Man will cost them how many of their own men? I predict more layoffs to pay for this film or maybe cutting the lights and working by candlelight.
Harvey and Tom have been mates for years. In fact, it was Tom who advised Harvey to invest and promote Marchesa, the fashion line designed by Harvey’s then girlfriend, now wife. He said to Harvey, instead of “giving away” marketing money by his actresses wearing other designers, use that publicity for your own gain… the rest is history.
How much did they pay for the German territory, Nikki?
Sure, he’ll get Tom Ford an Oscar®. Ol’ Harv will just walk down the block in Tribeca to the engraving shop and get a new faceplate for the “English Patient” trophy he has been using as a doorstop.
Puhleeze.
Another gay movie for an Oscar? Aren’t the Jews going to get upset bt that getting in the way of the annual WW2/Hitler trophy hunt movie?
Harvey has one of them out too. He sure covers his Oscar bases, doesn’t he?
