PLAYBOY: You talk a lot about corporate greed, but do you ever feel a conflict working for giant corporations as an actor? Your other big new movie, 2012, is a gargantuan Sony product.
WOODY HARRELSON: Yeah, there’s definitely a conflict, though I don’t look at Sony as a terrible corporation the way, for example, Fox is. Fox is bad news. I do not like Rupert Murdoch. He’s like Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda guy. Murdoch is waving the flag not because he gives a shit about it but because he just wants to make money. It seems to be tried and true for him, though now I guess his empire’s taken a bit of a hit.

Fox News portrays itself as fair and balanced is consistently shown to be twisting and/or ignoring the truth on a daily basis. that doesn’t just include its opinion programs. the news is skewed towards one side and, basically, “plays” millions of Americans who do not bother to use the brain that God gave them.
so, it’s a propaganda machine that propped up 8 years of the Bush administration and now does everything it can to knock down the Obama administration.
Goebbels was a master of propaganda and so is Fox. simple as that. if you don’t see the comparison, then you’re just ignoring it.

‘Liberal’-'conservative,’ not that either of these words signify anything real, isn’t tit-for-tat. (e.g. if you have a dozen media outlets that are, say, anti-genocide, does it make the presence of a pro-genocide channel or magazine acceptable as an countervailing force?) For your ‘there are two parallel propaganda systems that balance one another out’ argument to hold water, you’d have to make the case that each side is equally bad, which you don’t.
In fact, if you’re so extraordinarily concerned about corporate power, evidenced by your comment about Obama being ‘owned,’ then please explain why you’re coming to the defense of Fox News, which promotes and works to normativize relatively radical free-market economic policies, which massively increase the power of large corporations, under the guise of meaningless signifiers like ‘freedom’ and ‘liberty’ with a verve that you don’t see on any of the non-financial networks.

Truth is the Goebbels comparison,whether you use it to describe Rupert Murdoch or any other media mogul, is a little better focused than the tired cliches about Hitler. Hitler was Hitler. Easy as it is ex post facto to use his name in a sophomoric food fight, he went from total obscurity to being a hair’s breadth away from dominating Europe and possibly the world. The confluence of mass manufactered high tech weapons and absolute ruthlessness had never been seen before and probably will never be again ( BTW, Goebbels credited New York advertising agencies with giving him his best ideas. So was Gobbels just a Teutonic Madison Avenue CEO?)
Fox isn’t right wing. Fox would be considered middle of the road 30 years ago. Everyone else has moved extreme left.
If anything, the reverse is true: Today virtually no one talks seriously about Marxism, or can envision a world structured by something other than global capitalism, and this was not the case in the 1970s; neoliberalism / ‘free market’ theory, which is about as un-left as you can get, is now part of everyone’s basic ideological underpinning; if you’re just talking about the national parties, the Democrat platform is quite a bit more centrist than it was in the 1970s.
The really genius work of the fox news, drudgereport, etc. is that they present totally regressive and hawkish politics and economics as moderate-conservative (which works, because people who are on board with the insularity and jingoism these outlets promote don’t want to see reflections of their views coded as ‘radical’ or ‘fundamentalism’ etc.), and the net effect is that there’s a total recalibration of the left-right spectrum, in which even very genuinely moderate policies or proposals that come from Democrats can be, according to a certain logic, derided as ‘radically left-wing,’ or ‘Marxist’ or whatever else.
If everyone has moved ‘extreme left,’ I’m not sure if that’s such a terrible thing – the country is quite a bit less racist and sexist than it was thirty years ago; while there never seems to be much public concern over war in Afghanistan, the most recent invasion of Iraq was protested beforehand (in contrast, the Vietnam protests didn’t begin until well after the fact, until footage of Americans being wounded came back).

It all started years ago when Tony Curtis on the set of SOME LIKE IT HOT stated kissing Marylin Monroe was like kissing Hitler.

Bush’s Press Secretary Scott McClellan already stated that the Bush White House fed Fox News its talking points. They told them what to say and Fox would broadcast it. Fox news was closer to being the American version of Pravda for eight years. So the Goebbels comparison is not entirely accurate. Who ran Russia’s propaganda machine? That’s who Woody should’ve compared Murdoch to.
