UPDATES John Ferriter & WME Feuding; “This Is Going To Get Ugly”
UPDATES John Ferriter “Hates” Coming Into WME
EXCLUSIVE: It’s rare for an agent to battle so publicly with his Hollywood tenpercentery. Then again, John Ferriter was a longtime William Morris agent, and he’s now working for what is essentially Endeavor after its takeover of Morris. So he’s hired a Hollyood litigator and a publicist. And Ferriter, a Reality TV major player and his official team (as opposed to his “camp” of pals since this is the first comment from his side) want to set the record straight with me and ensure Deadline Hollywood’s information is totally accurate. The team tells me that John Ferriter did not and has no plans to resign. That he is continuing to “take care of his clients and manage his business with the same professionalism, excellence and enthusiasm he has always displayed”. That John’s “greatest desire” is to resolve this situation quickly and amicably. That Ferriter is not engaging other offers at this time and doesn’t intend to until this is resolved. That Ferriter John is “prepared to do what it takes to protect himself and his clients and ensure that all his rights are respected”.
I’ve learned that this afternoon Ferriter and his lawyer, and WME’s Mark Itkin and Rick Rosen and the agency’s lawyer, sat down together for an arbitration. This follows Ferriter’s very public trashing of WME to his friends and colleagues over the past few weeks. The agent keeps comparing this to what he went through when he was recently hospitalized for an infection and then moved into intensive care (where he claims to have flatlined at least twice): ”I fought death, and I won. Ari Emanuel is not scarier than death. I’ll fight him, and I’ll win,” Ferriter has told his pals. His team is also claiming he’ll “tell all” about where WME’s bodies are buried — especially Mark Itkin’s, Rick Rosen’s, and Ari’s. “I’m going to go all out and go to war,” Ferriter is telling colleagues. As for WME, the agency doesn’t seem concerned at all.
It is true that the agency is holding him to his contract which still has at least 18 months to go. Ferriter wants to exit with his comissions and clients intact but claims WME offered to pay him in full only if he would not take any agents or clients with him for 3 years, and he refused. This all came to a head last week between Ari Emanuel and John Ferriter at a breakfast meeting at Walters Coffee Shop downstairs from WME. WME’s camp says Ferriter refused to work out a plan with the heads of the TV department, Mark Itkin and Rick Rosen, to see how John could stay on with whatever tweaks he wanted. The WME camp claims Ferriter’s lawyer instead called the agency and said John wanted out. Ferriter claims that, over the weekend, WME’s pitbull attorney Patty Glaser wrote him a letter telling him to stay home.
But WME will still enforce his new contract. That pact was signed before the merger talks between William Morris and Endeavor began in earnest and still has at least 18 months left on it. Ferriter was the only one among the 20 William Morris board members to vote against the merger. Nevertheless, WME did keep him despite his long illness. Last week he was telling pals that he “hates coming into the [WME] office every day, but they’re hanging onto me as long as they have to pay me”. Ferriter tried to raise venture capital and start a company, but the climate has been lousy because of the financial crisis. In July, his silver bullet client Ryan Seacrest threw him under the bus by going to CAA and then battled over commissions. Now, as far as WME is concerned, he can come to work or stay home.

Let the Shitstorm begin. This is going to be good!
Doesn’t sound like war–sounds like a totally rational approach to get a team together to make his case legally and publicly. WME is smart enough not to want this to drag on. What’s a few million dollars more at this point? They’re saving it on the building anyway.
how is publicly trashing the company and saying he’ll expose skeletons from closet in any way amicable? so he doesn’t like his job, then find another one. if he was so clutch seacrest wouldn’t have left and he could have found funds somewhere to start his own venture. will still be quality entertainment watching this unfold.
Like him or not, Ferriter made a stand at WMA for what he thought was right. There was a “merger” being voted on without approval of shareholders. We all call it a merger but it was a takeover. Because he voted his conscience, he now must be eliminated for Endeavor (refuse to call it WME) to continue doing business without concern.
Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail, Ari will settle with John, some agents will follow, some will stay and business will go on. OR they can have a long, drawn out, ego-based battle to see who has the biggest dick. And while both men are agents and therefore may be somewhat suspect in the character dept., if you want to measure who IS the biggest prick, it wouldn’t be John Ferriter.
an agent hiring a publicist? what a horrifying idea – who screams at whom? who do they blame when they can’t blame each other? it is like two bottoms in bed together – all ass and no dick.
Can I make a Sean Perry joke yet?
I’ve known John for a long time..and he has always seemed disgruntled to me…never happy…takes on too much and doesn’t follow through, and sloppy…and most of all childish..to have a baby fit over running the weekly meetings is the true sign that he has not never even tried to work with the new merger and has always felt like he should have more power then he actually does..which means he doesnt have the respect he feels he deserves…wonder why?…he’s imature..not a team player and a CHILD…and he doesnt deserve the respect…no one at WME wanted to lose him, but now i think everyone can’t wait till he’s gone…who wants a negative kvetch stomping his little feet around every day…good luck to any one that hires him…and I mean it…GOOD LUCK
Thanks… for… your… perspecti…ve….. I… read…it… with… great… interest………………………………………………………………………………..
This merger is officially a trainwreck. WME will never reach the level of respect Endeavor had before the merger…
Too much bad press… Too much dirty laundry aired in public… Too much bad blood towards them… Too deep of a hole.
TV = JF is the most visible fissure of many
Marketing = a trio of Don Draper wannabes, each too incompetent to find his own ass with both hands
Talent = we would consider Lindsay Lohan a get
Music = ready to take the show on the road
Publishing = stupefied without a strategy for doing business in a Kindle economy
$$$ trouble = building, shareholders, salary & UI payouts to the terminated, the Bonus issue
Keep the agency news coming Nikki. Good for Ferriter. I’m glad he is standing up to the evil empire. In many minds CAA actually looks good to trust (crazy, right?). Well I wouldn’t go that far…Let’s just say I didn’t think there would be an agency more despised than CAA until this whole merger happened and the dirty laundry was aired about WME. Wow there are so many closets that are filled with dirty little secrets. Nikki, it’s your site that started this from the beginning. People need a place to vent. This is the place to do it. So for everyone crying about how these people have families and they’re people too they should just shut up. The agents responsible for inhumane behavior are now at least going to get exposed. Ari, Karma is a bitch. Ferriter keep on keepin on my friend. Many of us are pulling for you….You have lot’s of friends out there who want WME to die fast and for you to come out on top. So please don’t give up. What they did and what they’re still doing is wrong.
Endeavor used to be cool. William Morris used to be cool (or cooler?). After the combination and re-branding, this company doesn’t seem or feel half as cool as each agency did separately.
This article sounds like a disgruntled employee. If this employee “hates coming in to work” then it is up to that employee to think about moving on and going in a new direction.
This agent, John Ferriter, cannot play the blame game or attempt finger-pointing at his fellow colleagues and/or the company he is attached to since it is seemingly apparent that he is not a happy and satisfied employee at all.
WME will thrive and go on without his services, I am sure about that.
It is very interesting when a Worker Bee thinks they are more important than the Hive.
JF is probably the nicest and most generous agent I’ve ever known. He even buys the assistants bagels every Mondy morning and lunch that same day. Given that the WME assts. make next to nothing, it means a lot.
I agree – I was an assistant there for a long time and he’s always been incredibly nice. How they treat assistants does show a lot about them as people. I wish him well
I used to be a WMA assistant. JF really helped me out of a difficult work situation, out of pure kindness. There was no benefit to him…Unlike most agents, this guy has a heart.
John has more support then they can imagine. All the agents in the department are loyal to John…not WME.
A battle between douchebags. Everyone is hoping that both parties lose. WME is a hornets next of despicable scumbags. There are no bodies buried. The bodies are stacked in front of Jim Wiatt’s house for all to see Ari’s hubris.
This merger makes little sense for talent and will take years to re-set. Good news for CAA, good news, I guess, for ICM and UTA. Interesting that you don’t see the CAA guys in the press much. Ari, on the other hand, is our insider, duller version of Paris Hilton.
J.F. Didn’t want the merger but stayed….He made his decision and continued to render his serivces under his contract. He should finish his contract make his money and then go on. Many in Hollywood should have such problems. As for WME, they need good P.R. now. Doesn’t come across like Camelot anymore.
This “takeover” is a disaster. WMA & Endeavor will never be the same. Everybody loses…Except CAA.
MAYBE NOW HE WILL RETURN CALLS.
I used to work at WMA and I heard he gets over 100 calls a day. Literally. He can’t return everyone’s right away.
yeah, I laugh to myself when i hear people whining how he doesn’t “return” calls. When i first joined wma, i had to cover his desk for a week…INSANE. His desk is so busy that i’d put the # of calls he received at over 100 easy.
When made me work hard for him was that he always ALWAYS was nice to me when he didnt have to be.
Even when i landed in mopic and not tv, he still spoke and asked how i was.
Definitely a class act.
Ari had no concept business-wise of what this merger would mean… Peter Chernin he is not.
Now he’s payin the piper for it.
D’oh!
John is a good guy, he’s not perfect but I don’t know any agent that is…most are useless, calloused or full of it. I, for one, am thankful for having worked with him and I was glad to be a part of his team. He was on the ball. He works hard, maybe too hard. His health suffered in part, because of his dedication to his job. And, you’d hate coming to work too if you had to deal with this takeover, it’s ugly and there’s nothing good about it. It’s greed in it’s purest form. Kudos to John.
Worked with John in getting a new project off the ground, he was great from start to finish. A class act, hope he gets everything he asks for.
so what’s the deal? is he in the office or not? sounds like that’s the message the ‘team’ you mentioned is putting out.
John is nice, professional, and always follows through for me. I wish him well.
John is a true gentlemen in a town full of vipers. I can only hope that good triumphs over evil although sadly life doesn’t always work out that way.
