UPDATES MPAA’s Dan Glickman Mulling Senate Run
UPDATES Studios Plan To Replace MPAA’s Glickman
Dan Glickman told Politico.com he’ll exit when his contract ends after serving as chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America for the past five years. “My guess is that I’ll end up in the nonprofit or academic world,” Glickman says even though there’s been talk he might make a U.S. Senate run as a Democrat from Kansas. “People who know me know I’ve had these great extracurricular interests that have been very significant in driving me.” I’ve previously reported how there’s been a lot of dissatisfaction with Glickman among Hollywood CEOs who only agreed to extend tthe lobbyist’s contract for another 18 months back in March. “The unhappiness focuses on the fact he’s a bad and boring speaker who has not repped the movie business well in Washington,” my source told me back then. The moguls in particular blame him for not being able to keep those $246M in tax breaks for studios and filmmakers intact within the economic stimulus package. The thinking is that Glickman, a Democrat like Jack Valenti (although that’s where the comparison ends), got outmaneuvered by Republican lawmakers. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if the MPAA looks for a GOP lobbyist this time around. But Politico suggests possible names include Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Rep. Harold Ford Jr., Universal Music lobbyist Matt Gerson, Rep. Howard Berman, Richard Bates of Disney, MPAA COO Bob Pisano, and federal affairs chief Michael O’Leary.

This is Hollywood’s stooge vs. douchebag test.
While both qualities are highly sought after in this job, there is a conflict around the studio offices as to which is better for serving thier needs.
The solution is in combining these myriad qualities together.
So whomever is hired for this position will be the biggest stooge AND douchebag in town the studios can find.
Piracy is a terminal cancer metastasizing within the traditional content business and I can’t think of a thing this Glickman fellow has done that has attempted to cure the disease or even properly treat the symptoms. Shame on the studios for leaving him in power for so long, because the truth of the matter is, he’s been utterly ineffectual.
The most impressive antipiracy efforts have taken place in Europe, not the US, which is odd since Hollywood has a lot more to lose than the Europe-based content providers.
Jeff Zucker would be a good replacement, because at least with Hulu he came up with a product that actually has a revenue model and offers a better experience than pirated content.
It would be total insanity to put someone in this job who barely knows how to work a computer.
The MPAA needs to get a a young genius from silicone valley on the case, not one of these soon-to-be-looking-for-a-new-gig types being floated by politico.
Whoever the new guy is, s/he should be a fire-and-brimstone piracy zealot, fighting and making noise every single day and absolutely literate in the technological issues behind the problem. Getting someone young with a lot of energy would be the right move.
Dig up Valenti
MPAA is going to the Hollywood trash heap. It is a monopolistic enterprise between 6 multi-national corporations who use the MPAA in illegal activities to keep out true independent productions. Which is illegal under Federal Law. MPAA only has succeeded in the past because of money used to bribe Congressmen, now they have no money. Game over for MPAA.
I’ve gotten to know Dan Glickman many times over the past several years and he’s always personable, thoughtful and engaging. For your “source” to call him “a bad and boring speaker” is completely inaccurate and misinformed!
Compared to Jack Valenti, Dan is much more approachable and self-deprecating. As a former U.S. Congressman and Clinton Cabinet member, Dan Glickman is a great storyteller who’s equally comfortable sharing his refreshingly honest perspective on Washington political leaders as well as Hollywood assholes.
During the WGA strike, I was impressed with Dan’s knowledge of the issues and ability to comprehend the arguments of both sides. He also astutely predicted that Carol “I have a penis” Lombardini was being groomed to replace Nick “the anti-Christ” Counter.
In a business with so few individuals who are both effective and ethical, Dan Glickman displays both virtues. He also happens to the father of producer Jonathan Glickman, who himself is considered by everyone to be talented and a good human being. Anyone who wants the entertainment business to succeed should thank Dan Glickman for his service and wish him well. The only shame is that there aren’t more people in power like him.
Notice the potential candidates are all male.
