Fox Releases New ‘Avatar’ Trailer
Clearly Fox is going all out for the male audience for Jim Cameron’s game-changing 3-D oeuvre Avatar opening December 18th. The studio announced today it’s arranging the biggest live trailer viewing on one of the biggest sports days of the year (with key NFL match-ups + Game 4 of the World Series) November 1st. That’s when the Avatar trailer will get the world’s biggest live trailer viewing when it debuts live on the world’s largest video display at Cowboy Stadium’s Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision Screen while millions of football fans watch it at home. It will be carried by FOX Sports on FOX NFL SUNDAY before the Dallas Cowboys-Seattle Seahawks game live just minutes prior to the noon (Central time) kickoff. In addition, throughout the day, 90-second Avatar commercial spots will air on all regional games carried on the Fox affiliates, as well as on the national game on Fox, and on the World Series on Fox.

Boy that’s stupid. I predict (and it is an easy call) that Avatar will flop like Heaven’s Gate. The bit on YouTube with “the Fuhrer” (a clip from “Downfall” with funny subtitles) finding out that Avatar “sucks” is pretty spot on: “I waited ten years for Captain Planet with Cats?” “Cameron should have let Lucas make Ferngully 2: the Last Rainforest.”
Guys don’t care about “Global Warming” or sex with some CGI cat puppet. Guys want a simple story that Hollywood can no longer make: save the day, get the girl. That means the day must be worth saving (no one cares about Liberal “Global Warming” propaganda on some alien planet), and the girl must be worth getting.
How good did the remake of “Day the World Stood Still” do? Or any of that stuff (preaching propaganda instead of story?)
300, Die Hard, Taken, it is not hard to figure out what guys like. Avatar is not it. This movie will predictably flop (anyone can see it) because it is actively repellent to guys. Heck the fact that everyone is mocking the movie (on Youtube) ought to be a big red flag.
Avatar tanking? yeah right…. I bet Cameron is going to have the last laugh just as he did 12 years ago when the media, critics and naysayers alike were hoping Titanic to sink.
“Guys want a simple story that Hollywood can no longer make: save the day, get the girl. That means the day must be worth saving (no one cares about Liberal “Global Warming” propaganda on some alien planet), and the girl must be worth getting.”
Hi, a guy here, letting you know that you’re speaking for yourself and not all guys. I don’t really want global warming propaganda films either, but I also definitely don’t want save-the-day bullshit.
The allegory seems to be more about colonialism than global warming. At least that was my interpretation of the trailer. Also, you have to be an idiot to use YouTube comments as the basis for any type of theory. Commenters there are the absolute dregs of society.
I don’t know Whiskey from Tango, but I do doubt his prognostication skills. This movie will be big, almost on a curiousity level alone. When the studio publicity gears start grinding everyone’s interest will be piqued.
You’re missing the trees for the forest. The selling point of this movie isn’t Global Warming or CGI, this IS going to be sold as a love story, a love story the likes of which you’ve never seen.
You are mistaken, Whiskey. You seem to be blinded by your own prejudices. Nobody knows how much of a success the film will be, of course, but it’s pretty clear that it won’t be a flop. The imagery is dazzling, the 3D technology intriguing, the new trailer better than the previous one (although it’s dripping with cheeze), and the marketing not a complete disaster. Guys will go. Women will too, although in smaller numbers probably.
The question is, will this baby have legs? See you at the movies.
That ‘liberal propaganda’ talk is ridiculous, as is the idea that only male-oriented films can make lots of bank today. Though this film just doesn’t look very good.
This is a better use of advertising dollars then showing TV spots for the new “Twilight” movie during Sunday Night Football.
If you saw the 3-D animated film Battle for Terra which was released earlier this year you have already seen this film. What I really thought was laughable is how the big blue Pandorans speak english but I am sure they will have a stupid explanation for that as they do in most films which replace human emotions with CGI effects.
It almost seems cool, until half way into the trailer, when you have all the computer animated blue people come into it. Then it looks too fantastical. Maybe instead of using so much CGI they should have hired Jim Henson to do what he did for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Isn’t there anyone out there who can make a movie without using so much animation? What ever happened to the glory days of action movies- with guys like Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold, Van Dam, etc?
I think Whiskey needs to put down the bottle.
This is the first trailer that finally showed some promise. The CG on the closeups remains problematic (how rad would it have been to use Stan Winston real makeup in closeups, CG everywhere else, a combination worthy of Peter Jackson), but this trailer finally brought in heavy hitter Sigourney Weaver, more Stephen Lang. It is a big scale epic, probably as predictable as any old b/w Hollywood movie, and should look insane in 3D
Anything that hits the jock market so hard is probably not a movie I will want to see anyway, they are obviously catering to the lower-common denominations. I’m probably not going to dig it anyay, the last (big) movie I was impressed with was “No Country For Old Men”.
Just like they did with X-Men and the last 2 Spider Men. More preaching and emotional angst rather than kicking bad guys butt and the special effects that go with it. I’ve waited decades for the technology to become adequate to do the comics justice. Then we get a lot of moping spideys and us against the world preaching Xmen instead.
Am i the only one who noticed the vehicles from halo 3 in this movie?? Are they really ripping that off?
a movie 15 years in the making, from a man who is involved in every facet of the production process ripping off a video game that was released concurrently with post-production. explain to me how james cameron could possibly have ripped off a machine from a video game that was being made at the same time? if anything, they are both leaning on the comparable machine from aliens. yikes, johnny hotpocket.
Watch a film called ‘Aliens’ – about 40% of the production design for the halo games is taken straight from there.
Wow, there are so many cynical, jaded snobs here who think they’re “above” mainstream audiences. It looks exciting and spectacular. It’s too bad if you think of yourself as too intelligent for this material and can’t have fun watching a blockbuster. Titanic had the same reactions and we all know how that turned out…
“We’re not in Kansas anymore!” You are probably sitting there in your barcalounger drinking a Schlitz wondering how Cameron comes up with such GREAT LINES!
Never underestimate the stupidity of the American public. The movie Idiocracy was generous to us.
Tron, anybody?
“After several Wall Street investment analysts attended a screening and were largely unimpressed with what they saw, Disney stock dropped 4% in active New York Stock Exchange trading”
Anyone who criticizes the Avatar trailer is derided as a hater or a snob, but the fact of the matter is that it does not look very original. Passions run high on this subject because in a town where it is very hard to get production finance for anything, someone has blown at least $300m on something that doesn’t look very good. Admittedly that’s just a reaction to the trailer, but trailers are supposed to sell movies, and this one does not appear to be doing a very good job. I really hope Avatar doesn’t fail, because a bomb this big could have serious ramifications for an industry that is already crippled by indecision and fear.
Oh how the mighty will fall.
Saw the trailers and bleah! Afraid for the mighty Cameron. This one has doom written all over it. Perhaps Ishtar was not that bad afterall..
Cut the crap everyone….first go see it in 3D on a big screen, then have a forum.
As I said a month or more ago… Think “Howard the Duck”…
Lucasfilm was so focused on pushing the technology, they forgot the story sucked…
Cameron was one of the few directors who concentrated on script/character development as much as he did on cutting-edge FX. That said, AVATAR unfortunately looks like he’s come down with a bad case of Zemeckis-itis. And it doesn’t help that the story sounds suspiciously like a CGI version of JOHN CARTER AND THE PRINCESS OF MARS.
And it’s an unfunny irony that when I came in on the middle of Christopher Nolan INCEPTION trailer, I thought it was the AVATAR trailer because it looked so cool.
The characters and story is completely derivative and generic, the female character is simply a blue African tribes woman with beads and other often seen aspects. You need more than hypnotic/ bedazzling effect to make a good film. Where is the story? This is all about selling a video game. It will of coarse flop; big time.
Its is not original too many stolen ideas and designs.
The 3D is blury( millions wasted for a cartoon)
It preaches the Global warming hoax(revealed last week in leaked emails)
It’s an anti-war film 6 years too late(as in the illegal war/raping of Iraq for oil)
“Sofia Stewart Revenge” will follow Cameron(like the Warchowski’s) for life.(The Matrix lawsuit will be in her favor)
