UPDATES John Ferriter “Hates” Coming Into WME
2:30 PM UPDATE: Agency sources told me this morning that WME Reality TV major player John Ferriter has resigned but the agency is holding him to his contract which still has at least 18 months to go even if he doesn’t want to come into the office anymore. But now sources in the Ferriter camp tell me WME is hoping to oust John and not pay him the money he is owed. (“Aside from salary, there are big outstanding commissions from top reality shows owed to the agency as well. And, hence, to JF,” a Ferriter pal emails me.) The way the Ferriter camp tells it, WME offered to pay him in full but only if he signed a contract stating he would not take any agents or clients with him for 3 years. John reportedly refused. “This all came to a head last week after Ari Emanuel tried to strong arm John Ferriter at a breakfast meeting at Walters Coffee Shop downstairs from WME,” a Ferriter camp source tells me. “This weekend, he was then ordered by WME not to come into the office. He in no way resigned.”
Oh, I love the smell of napalm inside the Hollywood agencies. “This is going to be big, and it’s going to get VERY ugly,” a Ferriter camp insider assures me.
11:30 AM: So here’s what happened, according to my sources: former William Morris Reality TV major player John Ferriter told WME Entertainment’s Ari Emanuel over breakfast at Walters Coffee Shop last week that he was unhappy.
The agency head told him to talk to the heads of the TV department, Mark Itkin and Rick Rosen, and see if all three “could design a plan where, hopefully, John, could stay on with whatever tweaks he wanted”. The next thing WME knew, Ferriter’s lawyer phoned and said John wants out. The result is that Ferriter has resigned, and doesn’t want to come into the WME offices anymore, but WME will still enforce his new contract. That pact was signed before the merger talks between William Morris and Endeavor began in earnest and still has at least 18 months left on it. Ferriter’s abrupt resignation follows my posting Friday that he remained odd man out at the new agency after being the only one among the 20 William Morris board members to vote against the merger. And last week he was telling pals that he “hates coming into the [WME] office every day, but they’re hanging onto me as long as they have to pay me”. Ferriter tried to raise venture capital and start a company, but the climate has been lousy because of the financial crisis. Then John was hospitalized when the Endeavor takeover went through, but recovered from his illness. In July, his silver bullet client Ryan Seacrest threw him under the bus by going to CAA and then battled over commissions. Now, as far as WME is concerned, they’ll let John stay home.

everyone saw that coming. not very good for their tv dep.
Maybe now he will return phone calls.
Probably not, Joe. Probably not.
The department was informed about it at their meeting this morning and the agents were told to tell clients that nothing will chnage and also given a script of the offical reaction story to tell clients and others who called to inquire. As most of John’s clients had very little contact with him anyway, nothing will change for them…
If the Ferriter being unhappy story was planted by WME peeps wanting him out, it was a stupid thing to do. This constant negative publicity about WME is starting to make that place look really bad and like there’s no one in control.
I think Nikki pushed him to it.
Well – guess John is going to learn the hard way, just like I did. Thought the exit would propel me to even better levels – a couple of years from now, he will understand just how good he had it.
you can’t just have your lawyer call to void a contract? unless wme is that willing to give away 18 months pay because he wasn’t happy. what a crock. two agencies merging is more important that one guy smiling.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. the guy helped build wma tv unscripted and is well loved by the people who work(ed) for him.
That contradicts nothing that person said. Two agencies merged, it was a business decision; I too don’t see how he can just get out of his contract? Is he going elsewhere?
Ugly is right. Not only are they losing one of their top agents, but JF also knows where all the bodies are buried. This will not be good for WME.
So obvious that Ferriter has got another opportunity with a rival agency and so announced his unhappiness as a way of getting the hell out of his WME deal.. Thinking once I go public with my unhappiness, no way do they keep me on….That certainly has backfired because Ari will now certainly hold Ferriter’s feet to the fire on his existing deal to block any Ferriter attempt to transition business out of WME.. 18 months is a long time to sit on the sidelines…Prediction: They will settle him out on his deal and he will move on to the new gig inside of 2 months.. This happens all the time in these situations..
And the rest of the working world in Hollywood doesn’t care….
Coming from a military family, John cherishes many of the values passed on by his father, most importantly: integrity, respect, and loyalty. In other words, it’s a complete clash w/ Ari and all the sycophants who work for him.
Anon is correct, this is the tip of the iceberg. Everyone in the dept who matters is loyal to JF. Most of LA, and the whole NYC office is mentally out the door as it is.
Big question is how silent Itkin stays on this one.
If this means Sean “Like my boots?” Perry and Lance “my first name gets me into LACC” Klein get handed the reins by Rick Rosen, expect lots more turbulence.
Hopefully Karma will be a b- – - – sooner rather than later for the horrific bunch that is now in charge. Nasty, greedy and selfish are the new mottos of the WME. The main problem is these people can wake up and look themselves in the mirror as they are devoid of knowing right from wrong. They LOVE having everyone live in fear and rule by intimidation. Wish those who are still there would get out as it is not worth “selling your soul.”
Go John, Go!

Ferriter should leave if he can – but he DID sign a contract? Is there going to be some long drawn out thing because he’s UNHAPPY? Hey pal, look around at this business. Who IS happy? I know alot of successful people here who make gobs of money, wield plenty of power and yet are so vile they have to take their success out on those around them. Perhaps that WME means now?
soooooo glad i’m retired. this biz in not for the faint of heart. If Ari is now the man to emulate, damn…..
“JF knows where the bodies are buried”?? lol – no loss whatsoever to WME. When all of this blows over, the biggest benefit to WME is that they gain office space. A month from now, no one will remember who JF is – Itkin made the dept & for any impt client with 1 brain cell, they should pray that he wants their business.
Bradley?
Has WME even made one really meaningful deal since the merger?! Perhaps the karma wheel is picking up speed.
HE’S lucky he got out.
John was the star of William Morris and everyone knows he kicked Sean Perry’s ass in the agenting business…if John’s out the door he will take a lot of talent with him.
After WALTER’s, the two went to Eli the Barber for a nice shave and than hit the steam room at SCBH.
Johnny never backs away from a good fight. He is a great agent and a good person.
I have heard good things about Ferriter. And he’s got my utmost respect for being the only one with the foresight to vote against the takeover.
JF is the best. He’s smart and respectful to everyone he comes into contact with. He is very important in the non-scripted world and wherever he goes he will be a valuable asset. The agency world is so disgusting. Are some of you idiots really saying JF is one of the disgusting people? Have you seen the agent roster of devils especially at WME? Let’s take a look…Ari Emmanuel, John Fogelman, Michael Cooper…I don’t want to write anymore because I am already getting a cramp in my stomach thinking about these names. At least Irv Wientraub and Jim Waitt are out of the picture and can no longer do any damage…oh wait…they already destroyed the old WMA…Is there anything else they could possibly destroy? Back to Ferriter, he’s a great guy and a great agent. Anyone who differs really hasn’t worked with him enough to understand what the hell you’re they’re talking about. Agents are scum scum scum….Ferriter is far from that.
Feriter was a solid agent, no doubt, in the old wma system. He had ryan. He had nick cannon. He had 3 ball. And most importantly, he was given the authority to run meetings by Itkin.
All of those things were taken away. But let’s remember how we got here. WMA had a leadership vacuum. Not to say that Itkin’s group (or the music/book biz’s) wasn’t run well. But leaders were not organically emerging thru the ranks and into leadership. This raised the need for a merger or a coup. Ferriter’s coup in May didn’t work. He was passionate in arguing against the merger, because it might break up his group.
Sadly he got ill. When he returned 10 weeks later, most of his troops (less Hans and Jim Griffin) were in tact and functioning well with Rick, Sean, Lance etc. That drove him nuts. He fought them for control. But the Endeavor system has always had a lack of individuals leading meetings, deciding policy, or holding titles. Again, drove him nuts to be made an equal to those perceived less powerful. (Maybe the military bg has its pitfalls)
In the end, cash is king. His biggest clients left. His package fees are locked in. It’s a declining biz. He had a bad attitude.
Bye.
3 Ball was always Hans Schiff. Clearly you don’t know what you are talking about.
JF is a good guy and one of the best agents in town. He will come out on top.
