I first heard rumors floating around for a month that Lauren Corrao, head of programming at Comedy Central, had been presented with a new contract (her old deal expires in December) that contained no increases, etc. So Corrao was actively looking for another job, either for leverage or a genuine desire to leave. Then, on October 9th, I learned she told Doug Herzog that she was ”burned out” and looking to return to producing. Today comes this memo:
From: Herzog, Doug

Subject: Lauren CorraoAllow me to share a quick word about my dear friend and our exceptional colleague…
After a great 7 years at Comedy Central, Lauren Corrao, our president of original programming and development, has decided to make a change and return to her deepest passion: creating and producing content. Lauren’s brilliant career has always been a combination of independent production and network programming gigs at MTV, Fox and, of course, Comedy Central. With this move, she’ll be putting her immense talents to work on the other side of the pitch once again.
Lauren will be sticking with us until the end of her contract in December. In that time, Michele and I will be hard at work finding someone who can fill her often stylish shoes. We wish Lauren all the very best in the next chapter in her career. She will be making a much more specific announcement with regards to that in the upcoming months.
If Lauren’s track record is any indication, that next chapter will be a great one. She joined Comedy in 2002 as senior vice president, original programming and head of development. As she rose through the ranks, the network rose in the ratings on the back of hits like Chappelle’s Show, RENO 911!, Drawn Together, Mind of Mencia, The Sarah Silverman Program and Important Things with Demetri Martin. Lauren is a big part of why Comedy is a first-choice destination for big talent. Under her leadership, Comedy has built strong relationships with Sarah, Demetri, Lewis Black, Katt Williams, Dane Cook, Denis Leary and Jeff Dunham, among others.
Prior to joining Comedy, Lauren played a role in building a broadcast network comedy brand at Fox, where she established hits like That 70s Show, MAD TV, and King of the Hill as vice president of comedy development and vice president of alternative and late night development.
I like to think Lauren owes her creative chops to her formative years at MTV, where she began her television career. Lauren would eventually become vice president and executive producer for the channel, where she oversaw the development of shows like Remote Control, The State, and The Ben Stiller Show. I remember the day she walked into my office to say she had figured out the way to do an MTV Soap opera with no actors and no writers — she said, “it’s called The Real World.”
The fact of the matter is that we owe a lot more to Lauren – her creative savvy, her eye for talent, her unrivalled work ethic and her unmatched spirit – than she owes to us. We’ll miss her dearly, but the phenomenal programming team she helped put in place will keep Comedy Central rolling as the funniest multiplatform entertainment destination around.
Business aside, there’s a reason Lauren’s professional path has crossed my own so often. For starters, she’s an amazing creative exec and has made me look good on and off for the better part of the last 20 years. But, beyond that, she’s been a great friend, a confidante, an ally — someone I was honored to be in the foxhole with. I will miss her professional expertise and her friendship but I know we will continue to be connected, both personally and professionally. In the short-term Lauren will be able to avoid my late night calls. But, you can rest assured, that as soon as she embarks on her new journey, I will be the very first person on her call sheet.
Please join me in thanking Lauren, and wishing her all the luck in the world as she embarks on a new adventure.
Best,
Doug

Lauren is seriously a class act, truly brilliant producer and one of the nicestest most beloved Hollywood executives out there! You don’t need it but good luck in your next endeavors Lauren!
Doug Herzog is worried I bet. He doesn’t know his ass from his elbow with comedy. He’s the luckiest guy in show biz because he heads a comedy network and he has no sense of humor and no ability.
Ask Dave Chappelle – he walked away from this “white boy who has no sense of humor.” Notice that when Herzog came onto the scene, Chappelle split?
I bet he’s searching like crazy to find someone who has a sense of what is funny. The only person who knows comedy at “comedy” central is Elizabeth. Doug and Zoe should follow Lauren out the door. Maybe a bank teller job, or the post office, would be a good place for them. You know–places where they have no sense of humor.
Whitney?
Working comic- really? Sounds like sour grapes to me.
Lauren is a good executive, as far as executives go. My guess is Lauren just had enough. It can’t be easy working with crazy folks like Demetri Martin all day. So not worth it.
One of the nicest, shrewdest, Executives in town…not to mention honest and candid. Caring, human, smart, trusted, gregarious. Always returns emails, calls, texts, hardworking. Salt of the earth. Lauren is the definition of Good People…..
This is the equivalent of the Bulls losing Jordan.
You said it, TyroScribe. Well put.
Even in his ‘farewell to Lauren’ note, Doug still manages to find a way to make it be all about himself. So annoying. Let’s let lauren have a moment, and get over yourself Doug.
Doug Herzog is an affable idiot who is too arrogant to be worried. He still thinks he can get rid of Judy McGrath and walk into her job. With 3 currently ratings challenged networks he needs more than his mecurial sidekick Michelle Ganeless to pull himself out of this.
Sacrifice Lauren Corrao and send a typically false and dishonest email to staff but we are not fooled. We know who runs these channels.
Lauren is very funny, and is not hacky at all. In fact, she only greenlit funny shows and every one who knows funny thinks she’s funny…she is well liked by all the great comics like carrot top and danny gans…did I mention she gets funny and is funny herself? Good luck funny lady, maybe nbc will hire you
Yeah, Krod Mandoon was hilarious. And who could forget Chocolate News? Are we sure she hasn’t been doing the development for NBC?
She was largely responsible for bringing the network from one that put things like Strangers With Candy and Upright Citizens Brigade on TV to the current incarnation of the network, which seems more interested in shows that just exists to titillate 14 year old boys and people who like racist puppets. Hopefully, this will turn around the network’s drastic slide.
To working comic: Aside from your dumb and ill imformed observation, odds are you are not funny either. Let us know when you will be playing cruise ships….Comedy Central has had a great team, and a lot of success with great people to work with.
Humorless indeed. This is the genius that canceled Family Guy when he was at FOX. Though to his credit, he’s also the guy who developed South Park. Guess he’s batting 500 when it comes to subversive animated hit shows.
If she had anything to do with “Secret Girlfriend” getting aired, I hope she loses more then her job…
What does Chappelle know?
Please. Development there’s been a mess for a couple years already.
Lauren’s great, and the team over there are all good folks. That said, did anyone else get physically ill reading Herzog’s warm rememberance of Lauren walking into his office at MTV and crowing that she’d found “the way to do an MTV Soap opera with no actors and no writers — she said, ‘it’s called The Real World.’”?
Yeah, baby! No actors or writers! Whoohoo! Isn’t that great? What a fantastic moment! Not only will it make sure that those stupid writers and actors don’t get work, but maybe, just maybe, it will be the first reality show hit and spawn a whole raft of imitators that suck shit, elevate the petty and pathetic among us to unimaginable fame, and cause a massive, voyeristic, dumbing down of our society!
You’re right, Doug, that was a great TV moment.
Is she the one who was responsible for ending “I’m with Busey,” “American Body Shop,” “Dog Bites Man,” and “Halfway Home” after just a single season? Easily any one of those shows would have been a better choice than “Secret Girlfriend” or “Mind of Mencia.”
Let’s say the unsaid — Lauren is ‘burned out’ because Michele Ganeless lit the match and fanned the flames.
Ganeless is blatantly jealous of Corrao and her long relationship with Herzog, and has been trying to push her out the door for years so she can have Doug all to herself. She deliberately sabotaged shows Lauren supported — it’s pretty lame, high school stuff. Try working here and needing both of them to sign off on something.
Now, Herzog and Ganeless are left with one another which is exactly what they both deserve and Lauren is free and better off.
Doug is one of the smartest guys in the business.
Overrated and personally drove real talent away from CC, now if they can just get rid of Doug. Lewis Black, Dane Cook, Sara Silverman, please, CC has never been about funny people, no one knows better than Laurin.
Doug Herzog is the epitome of class in this business. He’s a great creative and executive. This is a rare negative comment about Herzog. So Obviously, “Working Comic”, this is sour grapes. But be happy you are “working”…at Ralph’s on aisle 3. By the way, I’m not kissing any ass. Hell, he didn’t renew my contract.
anyone who’s ever been within 10 feet of the network knows the (3) main things wrong with that network are 1) michelle, 2) michelle and 3) michelle. lauren’s a great exec who deserved better. if there’s credit, doug’s there, if there’s blame, well..
Doug is an ADD riddled fraud. Michele Ganeless is Doug’s “yes man” that has no clue how to deal with talent or production. She is the worst. I work at CC, trust me. Nobody wants to deal with her. She thinks that everyone is her friend but they all loathe her behind closed doors. They better bring in somebody great cuz that ship is sinking.
Does this mean that Jim Sharp is next out the door?
One of the worst executives ever. Not a shred of love for comedy. I can’t believe anyone would be complimentary of her, she is despised by every genuinely funny person in Hollywood and this will with any luck open a new era for actual comedy on Comedy Central.
And no one mentions she passed on South Park at MTV.
