Even though Sacha Baron Cohen won’t be managed by Jimmy Miller anymore, the actor and Miller will remain producing partners on a couple of remaining projects. Meanwhile, Miller’s having his troubles: Will Ferrell had the summer’s biggest bomb (Land Of The Lost), Judd Apatow is on hiatus after his Funny People, Jim Carrey’s career isn’t hot, and Jay Roach had success helming HBO’s Recount (which Miller didn’t produce) but hasn’t directed a theatrical film since 2004′s Meet The Fockers because a lot of projects fell through. Oh, they have stuff upcoming. But is Miller really managing his clients, or is he more interested in just collecting his producing fees?

Jimmy’s an annoying little Napolean-figure.
Sacha is impossible to deal with. I don’t blame Jimmy.
Nikki,
You forgot all the brilliant stuff Ferrell and McKay are doing on FOD. Jimmy’s cut of that has to be what, thirty, forty bucks a month?
not a problem. jimmy is great and has a good eye and good instincts. wait till after the new Will F?Mark Wahlberg movie and Dinner for Schmucks all happens..
Jimmy Miller is one of the hardest working guys in Hollywood. To suggest that he is just interested in collecting producing fees is not only shortsighted but hurtful. There are few that have had such a long and prosperous track record. You can measure someone’s career by the last year or you can measure it over the course of their entire career.
I will always bet on Jimmy Miller.
In many ways, the film business is like sports in that you need a constant influx of young talent to stay on top. You can’t just do it all with aging superstars.
Jimmy Miller doesnt have much talent. And, a selfish pig to boot. He deserves to lose them all – he’s already run Jim Carrey’s career into the ground.
U always want to think the actor’s “at fault” in these situations, but if his manager is too busy racking up $ from producing and straying from the management, who’s fault is that?
I would say that Jimmy needs to bounce back, but that would imply he’s currently a failure. He’s a funny guy that puts talent and people first. And he’s not afraid to take a chance on the batshit absurd. He’ll be just fine. When people like Jimmy Miller cease to exist in Hollywood, you might as well hold a funeral for real comedy.
How is Apatow’s FUNNY PEOPLE “controversial?”
I’m not being snide. Just curious. Thought it was, overall, a pretty good film.
Jimmy is funny. He knows how to talk to comedians. He has had great success with a number of artists and deserves all he has received. He also happens to be one of the most unhappy, petty, greedy, sleazebag, bullies to ever live. He is a nasty son of a bitch.
Man,look at all the angry shits on this sight taking pot shots at one of the hardest working guys in show biz. This guy deserves his success. Easy to armchair QB people’s'failures, but don’t forget all the times he chose correctly. Plus, you’ve mentioned only a few misses. His shop also has dozens of successful clients. Jeez.
Okay, this is just madness. Will Ferrell’s last movie before LotL, Step Brothers, made over $100 million — just domestic. Which Judd and Jimmy produced and Adam McKay directed. Judd also produced Pineapple Express and Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008, both of which made over $100 million worldwide. Jim Carrey’s last movie made over $220 million worldwide. Jay Roach produced Borat and Bruno. In 2008 alone, Jimmy produced three movies that grossed over $100 million each. Funny People was hardly controversial. More like a brilliant and unapologetically personal film — the kind European directors get showered with kudos for making. To characterize these guys as anything other than highly successful is utterly ludicrous — if they’re not at the top of the comedy food chain, then who is? So Land of the Lost bombed, and now all these guys are finished? Really? Come on Nikki. I love your stuff, but this seems like a lot of axe grinding and not a lot of reporting.
Fyi I did not make the previous comment of Jimmy being a nice guy. Although I agree Jimmy is a nice guy I also agree he is one of the hardest working people in the business. Jimmy cares deeply about his clients and is one of the few forces in the Industry that creates opportunities for his clients and others. I wish everyone was informed about his history with these clients. Jimmy believed in Judd when Judd was a young writer and nobody took him seriously. Jay was an unknown in production on Austin Powers when Jimmy saw some dailies and recognized his talents and signed him. Sasha was unknown in America and Jimmy arranged for Jay to produce Sasha’s movies in order to protect him. While Will was hot on SNL he was completley overlooked by the studios. I watched Jimmy relentlessly promote Adam McKay as a director. Trust me none of it was obvious or easy. Judge the man by his body of work and applaud his efforts.
Wow. Unreal. I have known Jimmy for the last decade. He does not have a evil, petty, or “sleazebag” side at all. He is a good man. Decent and actually very caring.
His respect for his clients is profound.
I have never known him to say a bad word about anyone. Indeed, he is humble about his success and a very genuine person.
‘Funny People’ was 30 minutes too long, just so the Director could put his wife and kids in the movie.
That’s his prerogative, but it was not very entertaining.
I agree 100% with baffled, Nikki. You’re off the mark on this one…Miller’s track record is fantastic, and he is also not the only manager at Mosaic..there are a lot of people at that company, so even if you argue that the management is wobbly–which I disagree with–you can’t lay it totally on Miller..As to LOST..yeh, that was a stinker, but lots of blame to go around and Nobody–not even Stephen Spielberg–hits a homerun every time..as to Jim Carrey, he is still a huge star that most comedy producers would kill to have in their film.. his misses have typically been when he strays from his comedic sweet spot, but at least he takes some creative risks, which someone as successful and talented as he is deserves to do.
Jimmy Miller without Eric Gold would be an alcoholic doorman at a second rate comedy club. Eric Gold told him under his wing and did everything for him. I was there; I know. Every time a client came for Eric, he would grab them. Someone earlier wrote “sleazy” and “greedy” and these are just a couple of applicable words. He is talentless, sneaky, a back-stabber and a Hollywood leech. Wanna know about sexual harassment in a workplace? Ask women who have worked there and had to put up with his headlocks and the breast/butt touch. If it wasn’t for Eric Gold, Jim Carrey would never have had the career that he has had; the comics who went with Miller are realizing that he doesn’t know anything, that it was all Gold’s work.I hope Jim Carrey realizes that if he stays with Miller his career will go to the toilet.Ari Emmanual, Martin Lesak and Jason Hayman should wake up and see Miller for the disaster he is.
After reading and researching what Eric Gold did for Ellen DeGeneres all I have to say is how can I sign with him. Forget this Miller guy.
like QB in the NFL, managers get to much credit when things go well, and to much criticism when things go wrong. Jimmy is neither as bad or as great as described by these posts. I would add that any artist would be lucky to have Jimmy or any of the hard working, and under appreciated managers out there. Artists, in this town are commodities to be bought, sold, and ignored, having someone like Jimmy behind you is an advantage.
I’ve known Jimmy for some time, produced with him and co-managed with him. He is an outstanding personal manager.
Instead of looking at the current state of Will, Judd and Jim, how about the achievements in their respective carriers. Both of these artists reached heights few thought were possible. Sustaining the highs is nearly impossible, and lets not forget that artists at this level, have a team of agents, lawyers, publicist, manager all contributing at times, but ultimately its the artist that makes the final call.
Taking a producer fee is between the artist and his manager, some cases it can help the client sometimes it can be counterproductive.
If nothing else look at Jimis turnover, how long have these guys stayed him? That, to me, speaks volumes.
Jimmy is a giant…his belief in his clients is unparalleled…the work that he does for them cannot be quantified. His instincts are without peer (except, of course for Eric Gold & the late Bernie Brillstein – whom I worked for…). Jimmy has impeccable manners & treats everyone with great respect. It’s the losers who can’t get near Jimmy or his clients that are kvetching…
Jimmy Miller is my hero!
