Before Stephenie Meyer authored the Twilight Saga, Anne Rice was the Queen of Vampires. So, in a recent Wall Street Journal interview, she talks about the fang explosion in showbiz. (And, yes, this is another in my shameless plugs for Twilight fan traffic):
WSJ: What do you think of the whole vampire phenomenon that’s taken hold?
Anne Rice: I think it’s wonderful fun. Now that I don’t write the Vampire Chronicles I feel free to enjoy it. I really enjoy the HBO series True Blood. When I was writing my own, I wouldn’t have wanted to be influenced.
WSJ: Have you read any of Stephenie Meyer’s books?
Anne Rice: No, I haven’t read any of the Twilight series, but I did see the film. I felt that it reflected the deep desire of young women to have the mystery and protection and wisdom of older men. I think many girls mature much earlier than boys, and they are frustrated when they approach young boys for love or protection. Hence the fantasy of a wise and protective vampire coming into the life of a young girl who, of course, appreciates him in a special way.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Hey Nikki, I thought you “don’t do geek.” Twilight doesn’t qualify?
Didn’t Anne Rice find God and abandon her otherworldly past?
Seriously… They are all bloodsuckers, you know.
And I used to love vampire stories, now I am bored and overfed with blood, I will only save (as a film) true blood second season was so twin Peakian, that it was great fun, Let the right one in! Isn’t it very interesting that vampire become less and animals in recent fictions?
I’m not surprised she hasn’t read the Twilight series. Isn’t she now a devout evangelical Christian? I’m surprised she allows herself to watch True Blood! Don’t Christians believe vampire stories are demonic? At least there’s a bit of the ol’ Anne left!
Rice’s last comment pretty much describes the reason for every domestic abuse case to ever take place.
Glad I wasn’t the only one that thought that…
True Blood might be banking off the Twilight success. But, it has truly become one of the best shows on tv!
guess what mad man? charlaine harris’ novels came out way before the dreck known as ‘twilight’ came out. the series was in developement years before that piece of ^%*^$$(@#$%^ movie was unleashed on the world.
deal with it.
I can’t wait to see New Moon. Mostly because I think it will be funny. Anne Rice created much better vampire stories than all the new comers.
True Blood is a great series, has a mixture of everything. It’s great to see a legend like Anne enjoy it like the rest of us.
Well, apparently she hasn’t read the books True Blood is based on either. She doesn’t read the books, just watches the movies/show. What’s the big deal?
Interesting analogy. Its true that Edward has been 17 for 95 or so years so that does make him an older, wiser man. I also think it is about being loved very, very deeply and connected with another like no other. That is apparent in Twilight to me.
Dear Anne Rice,
Men aren’t like your vampires. Stop poisoning our youth with ridiculous fantasies about your ideas of an ideal man and get on with it.
no, men are like vampires. they suck you dry and take everything they can before leaving you for another woman.
our youth should be aware of these factors as go into the world.
basically i agree with you. go with god.
SERIOUSLY? Anne Rice likes a decent story, and hasn’t bothered reading a crappy one? SERIOUSLY?
Good. Twilight is crap.
You do know that Rice is batfuck crazy, right?
Having read all of the Vamp Chronicles, the witch series, The Mummy and other Anne Rice novels, I kind of feel as if I have “done” the vampire thing.
I hate the accents on “True Blood.”
Because of Tom Cruise, WB botched the possibilities of “Interview with the Vampire” and its successor novels.
I’d love to see a movie of The Mummy: Ramses the Damned” because it’s such a radically fresh take on that particular theme. Geffen at one time had the option to make it, probably at WB but I don’t remember specifically. Who knows where it is now, probably reverted to Rice and moot now because of the Universal monstrosity.
Looking at Mr. Pattinson, I don’t think he’s pretty and I don’t expect he’s going to age well, bone structure’s not right especially if he doesn’t take care of himself.
I’ve also tried to watch “Being Human” on BBC America, but I just can’t make myself care about any of them, as attractive as they all are.
BZ
there’s bound to be backlash with a series as popular as twilight. I loved the books and am glad the new movie looks a lot better than the first one did.
good point, boommzilla, about Pattinson. heavy partying is not good for the aging process, and they may need to bust out some benjamin button technology to get through all of the twilight films.
Do we really need to promote teen girls being with older men. Does not anyone else find that creepy and a little sick.
I’m hoping after one more season, HBO will cancel True Blood and move on to some more adult entertainment. Looking forward to Treme.
alan Ball is a terrific writer but . . . he seems to have some personal demons to work out, over and over again in his work. His point of view is beginning to bore me.
Yeah, what’s up with the “SERIOUSLY”?
True Blood = Big nominee at Television Critics’ Awards, already strong ratings rose consistently over positive word of mouth.
Twilight = Horde of teenage girls going gaga over sparkly men who will never try to have sex with them.
Anne Rice has TASTE? OMG SERIOUSLY? And she prefers an adult series to one intended for little girls? NO WAY.
“Do we really need to promote teen girls being with older men. Does not anyone else find that creepy and a little sick.”
- She meant generally; not necessarily and completely romantically. She kept her answer short and general. What a stupid point for you to raise. Of course, she isn’t promoting younger girls and older men!!
wow so only men suck people dry now huh? can say the same thing about gold digging women honey. LOL
