UPDATE: Here’s a new chart I’ll be running weekly. According to the Independent Film & Television Alliance, the trade association representing the companies that produce and distribute “independent films,” IFTA relies on the definition that it started with in 1980: an independent film is one that is financed in majority part from sources other than the six U.S. major studios. This is a pretty black and white test and does not rely on the size of the budget or the subject matter of the film to give it meaning. Budget and subject were introduced to give organizations such as Sundance and the studios themselves a wide latitude to use the label when it became fashionable to do so (or necessary to attract corporate sponsorship). This was well illustrated in 2004-05, when Million Dollar Baby, a film produced and financed by IFTA member Lakeshore, won the Academy Best Picture award, while Sideways, a studio film produced and financed by Fox Searchlight, won Film Independent’s “Independent Spirit” Award.
IFTA believes that a test that relies on economic realities is consistent with the practice in other industries (has anyone ever defined an “independent” hardware store in terms of its “edginess”?). But, more importantly, the economic test is the only way to distinguish between films that are shaped by the six major studio executives and their worldwide distribution networks and those that arise from the creative and financial efforts of the rest of the international film production and distribution industry. The distinction seems pretty obvious outside the United States. It is only here that the lines are sometimes blurred!

You have got to be kidding!!!!!!!!
Which part, Jay?
They (whomever) can use the criteria they please to categorize/track an indie, independent, whatever. Ultimately, the non-studio financed, truly indie film will be seen (and categorized as such) by the viewer, sophisticated or not. Unfortunately most likely, only in LA, NY, etc…because other markets won’t touch the film.
And who are we kidding? Most ‘indie’ filmmakers are only making those movies independently to break into the big, studio, financed system…it’s not like it’s movement or anything. You’re a punk-rocker only when you REJECT the establishment, otherwise you’re Avril Lavigne calling yourself punk. Is Rodriguez volunteering to be a human laboratory rat lately?
tsktsk,
It isn’t subjective to define independent as a group outside the seven studios that the IFTA subjectively decide are the non-independent studios? tsk tsk indeed. What is the IFTA really? Its members are Miramax, Lionsgate, New Line, Paramount Vantage, etc. Lord of the Rings is an independent film and 500 Days of Summer isn’t. Please! The way independent is defined by the IFTA is convenient for the IFTA. Some studios and distributors like the idea of calling something “independent” because you can get around some unions and get financial breaks from others. Some of the audience is predisposed to go see an “independent” film; so it is great to be labeled “independent”. It is like buying an “organic” mattress to sleep on or a “natural” tooth brush to clean your teeth. Please READ a book or something before you post a comment. Perhaps think about the big picture before you post a comment. Or better yet: look in the mirror before you try to berate people. I just looked in the mirror before I berated you tsk tsk. It felt pretty good.

It’s an interesting issue this…not sure all the outrage is needed. If on this list slumdog millionaire would be listed as fox- but it is the typical dream indie film. The definition is correct because even if a studio does pick up a film- even at the outset – they are likely to be putting up about 20% – 40% of a budget and it may be that they won’t even cashflow. So whilst the studio will have certain approval rights and input – the producer is still scrabbling round for the rest of his budget and getting his/her film bonded etc. It seems a shame to strip a film of the badge of “we did it mostly on our own” just because it becomes successful. Indie doesn’t have to mean low budget loss making starless things-producers setting up $30m co-pros with Hungary/Germany deserve every accolade for bringing something home. For me tho – the definition of an indie film is a bonded film- anything with an expandable budget isn’t really independent.
