I do Geek. I love Cameron’s sci fi movies. However, this movie looks absolutly horrible. He made the aliens cartoony and disney movieish. What an overhyped piece of garbage.
You have very well stated the exact points I was thinking. Thank you.
I am a great fan of fantasy and some sci-fi, but this just looks too juvenile to me. That’s fine (not hating on the kiddie stuff, trust me-it has saved my butt plenty on the kids sleepover weekends), except this is being sold as a movie for grown-ups. Not sure it’s hitting on that level….
“Avatar” looks like nothing more than “Dancing With Wolves” in outer space with a $250 million+ budget in 3D: White Knight joins a conquering army determined to wipe out a native population and rob them of their land and resources. But White Knight has a change of heart, sees the light, gets with the natives and their way of life, and decides to stand with them in defending their land against his former band of genocide-mongers. Oh, and White Knight falls in love with a native woman along the way. 10 points to anyone who can name five other Hollywood movies with this same story-line or a similar variation.
Star Trek: Insurrection
Yah – can’t imagine how it will make it’s money back… but nobody thought Titanic would either, so I’ll reserve judgement.
Titanic was just okay for me, but this movie is SOOOO NOT Titanic…..
Not by a long shot….
Lucas-esque. And, of course, not in a good way.
errr, nice getting whiplashed by James Cameron’s resume every two seconds… thanks.
It’s gonna take more than yet another ‘You want war? I got war!’ type soundbite to get me to bite. And no… the naked Star Wars rejects flying around don’t do it either.
Pocahontas meets Delgo
As much as a Cameron fan as I am I can not believe that he would be involved with a film that looks fantastic but is nothing more than a repeat of what the White Man did to my ansestors-”Let’s Forceably relocate the locals for our profit”. This is their home but we need to make money off of what is theirs.
Completely agree. The whole concept looks endlessly predictable — the marine who’s going to change his thinking once he’s in his Navi body, who’s going to fall in love with one of the natives, and guaranteed there will also be one sympathetic human to his plight too.
As much as this is supposed to be “groundbreaking” it’s basically DANCES WITH WOLVES in outer-space, and I’ll be thrilled if it’s not as cliched as it looks.
Let me get this straight:
“Evil white men” working for an “evil corporation” seek to take over a foreign land and control it’s energy resources until a marine “goes native” and helps them fight back?
Sheesh. Every liberal in this country will see this 10 times. Just substitute Haliburton for the corporation and Iraq for Pandora.
I appreciate the thoughtful posts for and against this movie, but you bring nothing to the conversation here. I think you are posting on the wrong site.
Well Cookmeyer let me guess your white right? And either you or someone in your family works for the oil company or the government right! If not then basically your response actually brings nothing to this conversation, since all of these post are individuals posting their opinions and view of what they think of this movie. Which is what this space is for, thats why it says POST YOUR COMMENT! not post only positive things about this movie so we can make big bucks off it.
Would it kill them to throw one original idea into that mess?? At least they were kind enough to save me 20 bucks!
Okay, let’s take bets on how many of these comments praising it were done by Fox and Jeff Godsick.
great, “can’t be seen in Canada”, who the f*#k is preventing COMMERCIALS from crossing the border, in what world is a good idea to NOT ADVERTISE a movie.
I get it…”walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.”
Good, so now I don’t have to see it.
How many of these are they gonna make this year?
NEXT!
I mean really, think about what has come before in the last 12 months. Delgo, Battle for Terra, Monsters vs. Aliens, District 9, Planet 51..etc. Just how many of these, “Look at life from the other side” type movies are gonna come out this year?
This film will underperform and never make back it’s money. Mark my words.
This film can perform fantastically and still not make back its money. $300 million production budget + god knows what P&A by the time it’s all said and done = Better do Pirates or Spiderman business or else.
Isn’t this a bad remake of The Emerald Forest?
so it is Delgo then?
Maybe Cameron should of used title with a “T” in the begining..you know..just to keep the kharma flow..
Why should I be excited about this again? My old Playstation 2 games probably have a better story than this with graphics almost as good. At least the first trailer didn’t give away the thin plot and awful dialogue as much.
Oh and not to mention the scene with Giovanni Ribisi talking about the “Savages or messin up their operation” and in the background is a bow and a dreamcatcher in a case like it is some Damn trophy or something.
The Iraq metaphor is really heavy-handed. That alone might alienate some of flyoverland. They’re making Marines the bad guys? Not bright in a time of such political oversensitivity.
I didn’t realize James Cameron was doing a political movie about the Iraq insurgency.
I didn’t realize Cameron was doing a bad Michael Bay movie.
Or is it a bad George Lucas movie?
Comments?
Hilarious! We’re being punked, right?
Jon Landau compared making this to Kennedy’s initiative to putting astronauts on the moon.
Fully, loaded Smurf crap.
Is it me, or is this Aliens meets Apocolypse meets Revenge of the Jedi? I’ll wait to see Forever War by Haldeman.
Not sure if the net profits will be all that worth it, costing 300 million to make. Even after watching the trailer I feel I can wait until it hits DVD and then rent it from Netflix. This is a good trailer however (and I hope it’s not true) I can’t stand movies that show all the best parts of the movie in the trailer and the rest of the movie is just ok if not boring. We will just have to wait and see.
“Dances with Jar Jar Binks” meets “The Treasure of CGI Madre” meets “More Bloated Dialogue from THE KING OF THE WORLD!”
Looks pretty. Lots of explosions. Neato spacecraft. Love love love Sigourney Weaver. But it looks really really really really really really really really really really really really stupid.
I feel the same way, oddly, about Hollywood + Highland. Lots of parking, true. But they had $100s of millions to spend, and THAT’S what they built? They could have built anything, but that’s what they ended up with?
Cameron had a decade and unlimited cash to spend. And this is how he chose to spend his talent? I mean, I just saw CHRISTMAS CAROL. Robert Z made USED CARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, and ROMANCING THE STONE (a bit dated, but still a fun flick) and so he’ll always be my hero, but he chose to spend two years of life and, I dunno, $200 mil to make that stinking pile of mo-cap crap? The best thing about XMAS CAROL is that the mo-cap has rendered Jim Carrey completely unrecognizable, resulting in his best performance ever.
Never mind. I’m sure it’s brilliant and will make piles of cash. WTF do I know? I just don’t understand these A-list director dudes anymore. They should be making a movie a year, every eighteen months, minimum. They turned movie-making into rocket science; they’re more interested in the technology that the story. And that makes my eyes rain!
Avatar will do great with the 13-33 year old audience. And let’s face it – there is no real difference between a 13 year old and a 33 year old anymore, except a 33 year old can drink and drive and feel no shame when they play shoot ‘em up war games while their peers are getting blown to pieces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
this is one of the most exceptionally TRUE statements i have heard in a long, long time. thanks for posting.
