BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Well, I beat the Academy to their own announcement, but only by a coupla minutes. (So I’ve changed “wants” to “picks” in the headline!) The two are starring with Meryl Streep in the upcoming holiday movie from Nancy Meyer, It’s Complicated, from Universal. And they’re friends, something Steve Martin kidded about in the AMPAS press release. (“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.) I think it’s a natural and even perfect pairing (short of adding a woman or minority), and, for once, I’m actually looking forward to the Oscars, especially under Bill Mechanic’s and Adam Shankman’s stewardship. This will be Baldwin’s first, and Martin’s 3rd time hosting the Academy Awards. As I’ve been reporting, the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences hoped first to reteam host Hugh Jackman with producers Larry Mark and Bill Condon, but all were busy with other projects. Then AMPAS picked Mechanic and Shankman to produce the Oscar-cast, and they went to Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr and asked them to host as a duo. It would have been a killer combo, too. But the answer was no. So now here’s the AMPAS press release:
Beverly Hills, CA—Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards®, Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced today.
We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Shankman and Mechanic. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”
“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.
“I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.
Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter on the show several times, most recently at the ceremony in February when he appeared with Tina Fey. He is currently touring with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers in support of his latest album “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo.” In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording. He earned a third Grammy in 2001 in the Best Country Instrumental Performance category. In 2007 Martin earned a Kennedy Center Honor.
Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.” That year also marked his most recent appearance as a presenter on the show. Baldwin currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the comedy “30 Rock,” a role for which he has won two Emmys (in 2008 and 2009). Baldwin earned a Tony nomination in 1992 for his performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Agreed. PERFECT choice!
And Steve Martin has done it before!
I think I would sleep with Steve Martin… not sure if I’d watch the Oscar telecast…
even more reason not to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am very pleased with the choices.
I am already “glazing”.
Are they broadcasting from the Motion Picture Home?
Or maybe they could get Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy instead. It could be a Bowfinger reunion and they could give all the nominated films the “Hard Rain” treatment.
Chubby, dude. It’s Chubby Rain.
a perfect pairing?? are you on crack?? The Academy’s choice of host is a total mess. Did they not learn anything from last year? The ratings were up because Hugh Jackman drew a younger demographic. Why they didn’t ask Neil Patrick Harris is beyond me. Steve Martin is so not relevant, even if he does have a movie out. He plays to an older crowd and the ratings are going to tank this year because of it. Alec Baldwin isn’t as bad a choice because he has a hit show on TV and he can be very funny. Sorry, this is bad news for the Oscars.
Uhh how many people do you know under the age of 35 that watch the full Oscars show? That’s what I thought. The ratings are never gonna be great because no one cares enough (outside of Hollywood) to invest 4 hours of their lives to an awards show.
These are great choices by the Academy. I’ll bet it’s the most entertaining and talked about Oscars show since Billy Crystal’s run as host.
I watched this year’s Emmys pretty much solely because of NPH. <25.
Baldwin is not worth a quarter after (wife) Kim Basinger proved that he beat her. No truck for woman beaters.

Melissa,
I disagree. America has an aging population and young people are less likely to be impressed by an Oscar anyway.
I think the idea of a pairing where one of them did a good job before is a fair one, although you have a point about Steve Martin not really having done much in the past decade.
What do you have against an older crowd? Are people in their 50′s and 60′s irrelevant? There are quite a lot of us still around.
“In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording.” – kind of says it all…
That should help the ratings, cause that 30 Rock episode with Martin was huge!!! I think the Oscars are in big, big trouble this year. If the big Oscar flicks are Precious and Up In The Air, who’s gonna watch this show other than Hollywood and hardcore red carpet fashion followers.
The fact is, had the the Academy simply nominated the Dark Knight last year they could have brought some viewers back to the show, but they had to go all Indie and now they’re flailing in the dark.
So, the Oscars should only nominate the movies that make the most money in a given year? Does that mean that Transformers 2 ought to be nominated?
Of course, Slumdog Millionaire made something like $130 million in the US, it’s not like that film was incredibly obscure when it won.
This 1990 Academy Awards ceremony should be terrific.
Well, at least it’s not Ben Stiller…he would have sucked!
Stiller in black face could be a hit!
I predict more Bush jokes…well into the second year of Obama’s presidency. Will Baldwin be flying in from his foreign place of residency (since he swore how many times he’d be leaving the country)?
I eagerly await Martin’s hairpiece and Baldwin’s mean little pig eyes.
That’s not fair. Baldwin is very funny…even if not intentionally. I think we can all agree that Martin and Baldwin should do well together. Martin likes to tell old jokes and Baldwin IS an old joke.
I just hope for Steve’s sake he is not late to a rehearsal. I can just hear the taped phone message now: “Hey, Steve! You %#*@! How (bleeping) dare you make me wait for you! You selfish (bleeping) (bleep)!
It would be much more entertaining if Alec and his daughter hosted together…
I’m appalled. Two MEN, both straight, no minorities! Where is my Hope and Change?
Half right. Martin had his balls removed long ago, but – still – it IS two White people.
The hysterical thing is that when little conservative fuckwits like Mark try to tell a “joke” about minority groups, they usually just post something racist. Yet, they think they’re being witty.
Who cares? This was on the Drudge report so I read it. I will not watch it.I care as much about the academy awards as I so about who the hollywood narsacists like politically. What a bunch of self centered jerks. If you exclude Mama Mia I have not gone to a movie in over 30 years and I can still function in life.
Trust me, everyone excludes Mamma Mia.
there have been plenty of fine films in the last 30 years, regardless of what you think about the people who make them.
you haven’t seen a single film by the coens? nothing by soderbergh? cuaron? all these people, you can’t stand?
perhaps most importantly is why you decide to grandstand on a website tailored specifically to industry buffs. i don’t work in the industry, but i get a kick of looking in. what’s your excuse for berating every single person on this site?
Sandie,
If you don’t care about hollywood then why the fuck are you on nikke’s website?
You are an old tired lonely hypocrite. Go pet your cat while you watch Nancy Grace on CNN.
But you certainly cannot spell!!
Check your dictionary before publishing your rants.
Who even watches the Academy Awards? 95% of Hollywood movies are lefty formulaic boring garbage. The impaulsible scripts aren’t memorable for more than one day. Only the truly brain dead are in the audience anymore.
Alec Baldwin, please, he’s so yesterday and as dumb as a rock.
The man hasn’t made a good or funny film in over 15 years, and whenever he does pop up, it’s so bad I’m embarrassed for him. Pink Panther? Cheaper by the Dozen?
Sgt. Bilko, The Spanish Prisoner, Novocaine, Shopgirl. Not trying to defend him, as I agree that his broad mainstream movies have reduced his standing. In fact, from this point on, it would be best if he focused only on his banjo playing (which is out-and-out masterful), his writing, and movies that only he wrote. More in the vein of “L.A. Story” would be perfect.
wow, those are 4 you list as evidence to the contrary? while not “pink panther”-bad, all 4 of those were pretty lame movies.
Yeah, I thought Rory was adding to the list, and then I was like, “wait, what?”
I will only agree to allow this happen if the Steve Martin of old hosts. Bring out the balloon animals, the white suit and the non sequiturs. The new Steve Martin won’t cut it.
Why be exited to see Baldwin? He’s sleezy and an a**h***. Unless he’s rehabilitated himself. Did he find God like his brother? It disturbs me that Steve Martin is his friend. Now I have to wonder about Steve. Personal stuff aside, it’s sad that nobody will host the Oscars anymore unless they need to sell something.
Hollywood is such a white boys club. Did all the women turn them down.
And the NBA and the NFL are black boy clubs…this white boy watches them both all the time! What’s your point?
Hollywood is becoming an OLD boys club. Look at the “action” heroes these days: Harrison Ford (67 yrs), Bruce Willis (54 yrs), Lawrence Fishburne (48), Denzel Washington (55 yrs).
Probably the youngest Hollywood leading action heros would be Brad Pitt (46 yrs), Hugh Jackman (41 yrs), and Will Smith (41 yrs).
I thought action heroes and hollywood machismo was supposed to be the young, sexy, physically alluring men and not these guys that are old enough to be their target audience’s Father or Grandfather. EW!
So having Steve Martin (64 yrs) and Alec Baldwin (51 yrs) as hosts plays right to their membership though not so much to their desired target audience.
really great choice……
Who cares??? All the Oscars, and these other Narricistic awards
ceremonys do is make most people watch something else or ignore them. Every year the ratings tank.
Ron L, who cares ? Well the artists who actually are nominated and are being rewarded by their peers care. That’s all that matters. Most people will watch something else or ignore the Oscars because most people are bitter and do not want to see rich, famous people patting each other on the back for artistic achievment(and the average person knows nothing about artistic achievment at any level).
What, Tina Fey was busy that night?
I love Steve Martin and would be thrilled to watch the show because of him. However, the Academy made such a major mistake with Baldwin. His political activism as well as male chauvinism against his ex-wife and the divorce along with his conduct towards his own young impressionable daughter means I will NOT be watching the Oscars tv show this year because I couldn’t stomach seeing Baldwin, especially for that amount of time.
Besides, Baldwin will have no political material anymore to whine about Pres. Bush since all the problems in our country now are all Pres. Obama’s. Baldwin still hasn’t moved out of the country as he swore he would do when Pres. Bush was re-elected. sigh. The country wouldn’t have missed him, I think. I also think it would have been good for him to experience the downside of not living in the greatest country in the world.
Of course, none of the aforementioned will stop Baldwin from making some kind of put downs, digs, or denegrations to conservatives, family values, Christians and Catholics, the republican party, Sarah Palin, and former Pres. Georg W. Bush. That is all he knows how to do, instead of discerning why the problems in our country are rapidly mounting to the denouement of losing our soveriegnty to the climate treaty Obama intends to sign in Dec. in Copenhagen, wherein Obama will submit the USA to the one world government authority established in that treaty, as well as committing us to then redistribute our wealth to all other countries who have ‘suffered’ because of our consumption of energy and vast carbon footprint. Don’t believe me? research it yourself on the internet, watch the short video lecture Lord Montbacht who discusses this in depth how Obama will sign it and it will cause the US to lose its sovereignty as a nation state. Wanna Bet Baldwin will think that it is a good thing, too, huh?
take a breath, mariab. you’re a friggin wacko and don’t know how to express yourself in a half-way rational manner.
Mariab – every observation you make about Baldwin is right on.
Turns out the Oscars will be a giant promo opportunity for Martin to pimp his newest flop and for Baldwin to pimp Tina Fey (as if she isn’t good enough at that on her own).
Boo!
I was soooooo hoping the AA show would be fun, too. It would’ve been if they had chosen somebody like Eddie Izzard and not a watered down version of Martin and Lewis, aka Martin and Baldwin.
Yeah Downey would have KILLED, remember that AFI thing he did for Warren Beatty (click my name for link)? Steve Martin is classy but too old school/predictable. Baldwin is an interesting choice because he’s damn good on TV.
Steve Martin… is he still alive?
What were they thinking?
With viewership on an extended decline, the Academy needed to try to bring back some of the people who have stopped watching. Alec Baldwin will have the opposite effect. He has made himself an extremely polarizing figure, and rather than bringing people back to the show he’s likely to push more of them away.
