EXCLUSIVE: You know I’m insecure about my geek bonafides which I’ve been trying to improve in recent years. (Heck, I grew up never reading a single comic book.) But I’m aware that the Internet has been afloat with Spider-Man 4 casting rumors in recent days. While Sony Pictures insists no decisions have been made, sources tell me that the producers have approached Anne Hathaway to star in the film. Maybe you experts have an idea what she’ll play? All I know is that she’s wanted for a starring role, and she won’t replace Kirsten Dunst who’s also cast in the Spidey fourquel. UPDATE: You readers think the role is The Black Cat.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

They have cast The Black Cat!
Have they?
Who’s been cast?
Why not Kate Beckinsale. She always plays a good character let her try a villan.
i wont to play as peter parker
I hope it’s not this Carey Mulligan chick everybody’s so infatuated with these days.
Megan Fox would be unexpected, I hope she isn’t the one either.
Bridget regan from “legend of the Seeker” also rumored. Sam produces that show as well
Probably Black Cat. Rachael McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), Julia Stiles (Bourne Trilogy), and Romola Garai are rumored for the same spot. (slashfilm)
I presume she’s joining a long list of actresses who are being considered for the role of The Black Cat, a.k.a Felicia Hardy. At present at least four actresses are known to have been linked to the part, but nothing concrete on any of them.
The obvious answer is Felicia Hardy/The Black Cat so I’ll go with that.
Spider woman. To start a new franchise.
Spider Woman’s time has come.
You are joking right?
Maybe they’ll finally have a female villain in the 4th and Annie will be the villain?
Most likely they want her for Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat, a love interest for Peter Parker and adversary for Spider-man. She’d have to go blonde though.
Black Cat most definitely. I first heard Rachel McAdams rumors last week. Here’s a link of what she looks like in the comic if you’re curious. Big-time babe.

The rumored role in question is The Black Cat. I think she could do a good job and considering that she is actually hot- as opposed to a well connected average looking actress who publicists tell us is hot- is quite a bonus for this franchise. I thought she would have made a great MJ.
What a wonderful way for Anne to throw awat her growing career.
Riiiiiiight…
One is full of one’s self, aren’t we Lytton?
Heavens!
Oh Gawwwd!
Anne is in a comic book movie! it’s an outrage!
Rallly it is!
I hope you aren’t growing faint! (It could be The Vapors)
Lighten up, Strachey…
Yeah, it would be a stupid move. Because it was a HUGE mistake for her Brokeback Mountain co-star Heath Ledger.
Well, in all fairness, it DID kill Heath.
Oh, please. Go to sensesofcinema.com and read the Terry Gilliam interview-it’s right there on the front page. Heath didn’t go crazy-it was simply a medical overdose.
Ledger played an iconic character once played by Jack Nicholson and he did in a movie directed by Chris Nolan…. please don’t compare that to doing a spiderman movie. Hathaway has done enough mainstream popcorn films for one decade, she should focus on more serious fare.
It is completely comparible. Spider-man 1 and 2 are the only other comic book movies on the level of the last 2 Batman’s. Sam Raimi is a big time director like Nolan and you sir are an idiot.
If anything, she is not right for the part and should feel lucky to even be considered. Doing Soder-man 4 would be far and away the best thing she could possibly do. But I guess you think Havoc was a good career choice.
If her career can survive Get Smart, it can certainly weather a Spider-Man film.
Get Smart had no ground breaking OMG this is changing my life value, but it did accomplish what it was ment to… entertain. Get over yourself and just enjoy a bit of comedy. Ann has a very appealing nature and she portays that in all her files no matter the ridiculousness of the movie.
Bride Wars.
ya, because starring in one of the biggest film franchises of all time is totally throwing away a career. shut up, you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Sorry Charlie,
Ask Chris O’Donnell and Alicia Silverstone about starring in the 4th in a series of superhero films that was one of the biggest franchises in film history.
You’re right. It MADE their careers.
Perhaps you are the one who should embrace silence.
Sorry, but Chris O’Donnell and Alicia Silverstone were never on the level Anne Hathaway is at. And good decisions afterward – the sort made by George Clooney, who took the brunt of the Batman & Robin criticism – could have repaired any damage. Anne Hathaway has made largely smart choices, and even the bad films haven’t been outright howlers. (Bride Wars may have stunk, but it was also profitable.) She’ll be more than fine. In fact, she would likely be the best part of Spider-Man 4, much like Michelle Pfeiffer was in Batman Returns.
There was one person to blame and that would be Joel Schumacher.
Joel Shumacher wasnt the only responsible for the fall of the Batman franchise but was partly Warner Bros. aswell for feeling Burton’s films were too dark and wanted more family friendly made sequels as some fans wanted.
I agree…
Lastest rumors are they have been looking for someone to play Black Cat. Supposedly Rachel McAdams was up for the part so maybe Anne Hathaway is also.
Hmm. At first thought I feel this is the wrong way for Anne to go. But she is nothing if not up for a challenge. So…I guess it depends how it’s written. All I know is Maggie’s role in “Dark Knight” was baaaad. Dumb. I didn’t get her casting before I saw the movie and I didn’t get it as I was watching. Simply inserting someone talented doesn’t mean squat. This female role in an action film is a slippery slope.
Tobey Maguire is the WORST Spider-Man. And please don’t tell me “Spider-Man’s a nerd in the comic book.” He was a young insecure guy growing into himself, which shouldn’t be confused with a troll.
Hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars in box office disagrees with you.
Yeah… cuz the box office shows approval for Tobey Maguire, not that Spider-Man is one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. Riiiiiight.
Anne Hathaway is wrong wrong wrong for that part. And I think Anne Hathaway is GREAT in a lot of films. But I’m sorry the Black Cat needs a sick, curvy playboy body and Anne isn’t quite that. Catherine Heigl would be terrific!
Heigl would be too busy taking breaks to light up a cigarette.
Except, she quit smoking months ago. Don’t think this would be a good role for her though.
no i dont think she is up for Black Cat. but who knows…
if i had to wager….she could be Adriana Soria known as Queen.
alot of bizarre mileage could come out of this. seriously. it opens up several movie plots.
cant wait.

What most people don’t realize is that the Black Cat was created with an offshoot of the super soldier serum that made Captain America. Which would be a fantastic tie in to the entire Marvel universe; Nick Fury, The Avengers, et al. And yes, Spider man was an Avenger.
Never going to happen. Apart from anything, Sony can’t possibly use the super soldier serum, or anything else connected with Captain America or the Avengers, Marvel still own the rights, and won’t part with them.
yes good point but the super soldier formula also used in the Queen, since she was from WW2. Black Cat could always be played Bryce Howard
from Marvel Queen link:
During the Second World War, Ana(sp?) Soria was the first female Marine in combat. Though she endured a lot of sexual discrimination, she persevered where most men failed. In the late stages of the war, the Americans feared they were not powerful enough to contain the Japanese or the Soviets. Using Captain America as a model, they continued with super-soldier experimentation on genetically likely subjects, none of whom were properly informed. Already a mutant, Ana was lined up with several officers on the island of Bikini Atoll, where they were blasted with the radiation of nuclear weapons in order to release latent powers. Most were killed, but Ana survived, warping into a human-insect hybrid. However, when the experiments did not produce obvious results, the program was shut down and Ana was thrown into a military asylum, her mind fractured. Worse, Captain America, with whom Ana had a close relationship, was believed killed at the end of the war, which only encouraged the U.S. government to abandon her. In the 1950s, however, Ana escaped and went into hiding.
Recently, Ana surfaced in New York, still youthful and calling herself “The Queen”. She demonstrated complete control over anyone possessing the so-called “insect gene,” an atavistic DNA feature which connected some humans to the point where they split from insects on the evolutionary tree; Spider-Man among them. While her human drones built her a nest in a New York highrise, Ana chose Spider-Man as her mate. She forced a fateful kiss on the web-slinger that unleashed an enzyme into his body. When he resisted, she began executing civilians, then used her powers to immobilize him. Spider-Man was only saved when Captain America knocked Ana off the building. Surviving the fall, Ana moved her operations underground to a secret lab, where she had held the doctor responsible for her transformation since abducting him years before, and waited for the arrival of Spider-Man who was slowly mutating due to her kiss.
Initially growing extra eyes, extra arms and fangs, Spider-Man was drawn to and defeated by the Queen before completely morphing into a giant spider. Ana expected the spider to give birth to her offspring but once the transformation was complete the spider died instead. Distraught, Ana destroyed the lab and left without witnessing Peter Parker’s rebirth from the spider’s womb, with a few extra spider-like powers. Ana still held New York hostage, threatening to detonate a bomb that would exterminate all human life within 600 miles. Spider-Man disarmed the bomb and an unrelated explosion seemingly killed Ana.
Lu-lee are you dense? He wasn’t talking about the comic tie ins. He’s talking about which filming company owns what. Spider man was filmed by sony and has nothing to do with the avengers series characters that were filmed by marvel studios. These are two diffferemt franchises.
Is Tobey actually going to wear the Spider-Man mask in this and continue to remind everyone that HE is Playing Spider-Man?
Geez, talk about insecurity…
Anyway, yes Black Cat makes the most casting sense. I guess that will knock Anne out of any chance of playing Catwoman, should that character be in DK2.
I wonder if they will let her do the Superman reboot though… if you ask me she is the perfect Lois Lane.
I read that Rachel McAdam’s has denied discussions for the part and I don’t think she is interested, anyway. She likes her anonymity in Toronto (still rides her bike around town) and doing a second bigger budget film after Sherlock Holmes wouldn’t be her style. (Although she’d be my first choice).
I doubt Heigl’s apparently vast ego could handle playing second bill to Tobey McGuire.
Black Cat always seemed like a lame Marvel take on the classic Catwoman of DC, but then I’m 40, and had moved on to other stuff when she took off as a character. Anybody want to explain her origin? Nerd up, Nikki.
This would hardly be career suicide for Anne. Michelle Pf did a great job as Catwoman when she did that role. It turned out to be a memorable plum role for an aging actress. Here, the problem is less about the career move as it is about whether S4 will be any good in general (or more like the noisy pointless S3).
Black Cat? I’m a comic fan and if they are getting this low in the mainstream geek totem pole they are in big trouble. this means NOTHING.
Anne Hathaway is a terrible choice for the role…but so was Kirsten Dunst. The MJ of the comic books was a fun loving, upbeat girl with a lot of spunk — the MJ in the movies is a mopey, depressed sad-sack who complains all the time and makes life miserable for Petey.
If Hathaway is the Black Cat — a sexy, vivacious semi-heroine — then it’s all wrong. Again.
“What most people don’t realize is that the Black Cat was created with an offshoot of the super soldier serum that made Captain America. Which would be a fantastic tie in to the entire Marvel universe; Nick Fury, The Avengers, et al. And yes, Spider man was an Avenger.”
That’s actually not the case. Not in the comic books anyway…only in the ’90s TV cartoon did the Black Cat have that “origin”. In the comics she’s just a petty thief who always has silver hair.
So much for not sounding like a comic book nerd on this board, lol!
Well, she has a variety of powers. Originally she was just a butt kicking cat burglar. Then she got powers from the Kingpin that were changed by Dr. Strange, and now she’s got a bunch of weapons from The Tinkerer. I just always preferred the Captain America storyline from the cartoon. I’m a little impartial to all things Cap. How’s that for nerdy?
Actually, right before Spiderman came back from the Secret Wars Sage, Black Cat underwent some experiments with the Kingpin that enhanced some of her powers.
