• Satire is clearly protected under the 1st Amendment, and several Supreme Court cases have affirmed such. DirecTV has no case here.

  And… this IS satire- the point is how offensive it truly is to use dead celebs to sell a product- even if their relatives get royalties from it.

  Where’s the one where Johnn Lennon tells Mark Chapman to switch to DirecTV, and Mark Chapman gets mad and shoots him?

  Now THAT’S tasteless.

• Just wanted to drop by and tell everyone that they’re fucking stupid.

  Mr. I Like DirecTV? STFU unless you know what you’re talking about. These clearly fall under parody. Time and time again courts uphold the right to do this sort of thing. Yes, even using trademarked brand names and logos.

  People calling it untasteful? Try watching the ACTUAL ad that aired with Chris Farley.

  Person saying “I hope these never air”? I hope you never procreate.

  • I totally agree that the DirectTV was completely tasteless in making the Tommy Boy/Chris Farley spot. Frankly I was surprised David Spade would sign on to something like that. My hope is that the money DirectTV paid out to Farley’s family was something they couldn’t say no to, but still, BAD TASTE, BAD ADVERTISING.

• I don’t get the big uproar over the Chris Farley ad, it’s not like they superimposed someone else’s mouth over his face and made him pitch Direct TV.

  So if that video wanted to accurately spoof Direct TV, it’s would’ve been Batman doing the pitch.

• I have DTV….. this is about as good as the non-parody spot showing the guy’s friends turning into Benjamin Franklin. I still like DTV….until they F-up which they will do…mark my words, gird my loins….
