Twentieth Century Fox is calling this is a first-of-its-kind “next generation” trailer because its a dynamic interactive experience allowing viewers to access special additional content embedded in the piece. The trailer also will keep audiences up to date on AVATAR events by providing real-time feeds of film-related conversations on Twitter, real-time updates on official video content on YouTube, and images on Flickr. Updates on ticketing information will also be provided. The trailer is a first-of-its-kind application built on Adobe® AIR® software with technology existing outside of a web browser. AVATAR opens December 18th.

Sweet mother of Technological Jesus that is one helluva good package. It installed instantly and worked perfectly the first time on my PC and Mac, delivering half-an-hour’s worth of footage, interviews, plans all at a very high resolution. Kudos to Cameron. This is how all Hollywood blockbusters should be hyped.
It’s not really a world first for interactive trailers – UIP did this back in 2006 for the theatrical the release of Mission Impossible III
Now why the heck didn’t Fox launch with this trailer. I can see what Cameron meant when he said the studio dropped the ball with the marketing. The video is hi-definition, the sound is great, and the interactivity is something genuinely new. The story may still seem antiquated, but the window dressing is fantastic.
Wow. This is going to suck. 400 Million? Ech.
Avatar = Smurfs 2.0 !!!
I have to download an AIR application to watch an interactive trailer? That’s not fun, that’s obnoxious. Nice try, though, marketing department.
This movie looks better as it gets closer to release, however “gimme a break” with a “first of its kind” interactive trailer – this is just a widget with rss. Don’t believe the hype!
To me, the AIR interactivity seemes like a (well executed) gimmick with this trailer. The individual segments were all interesting, but they didn’t exactly switch back and forth in anthing resembling an elegant manner. However, the AIR interactivity might REALLY take off when they use it for product placement point and clicks. Whenever a movie character enters a shot, the viewer could click on the screen to connect to info about their wardrobe and where to immediately purchase it. If this interactivity gets popular, I wouldn’t be surprised if online Hollywood movies don’t end up selling ZILLIONs of shoes.
I don’t know. People are lazy. When you watch a trailer, you want to sit back and watch it, not sit on the edge of your seat timing a click on someone’s wardrobe.
You also never want to download random programs that you’ve never heard of, which is why I doubt this interactive trailer will make much of an impact. It’s a gimmick, just like live-action 3D.
judging by the dialogue alone, this movie seems like a massive dud. then again, we live in america.
Hey! Not to be rude to the airheads who’ve made comments here above me, but this thing is the bomb out here in the real world!
Obviously, the quality of the particular package (film) will indeed matter greatly, but ultimately a good picture packaged properly with sort of technology will increase the driving strength of a “preview” clip about a thousand fold.
And it’s on Deadline Hollywood, of course, which I just love. As per usual great items on Nikki’s site!
interactive trailers probably sounded awesome in theory. in reality, not so much. it’s more annoying than anything, and it does absolutely nothing to inspire my enthusiasm. like 3-D, it’s nothing but a gimmick.
Meesa no likee dat trailer. Squaw!
Well…you just saved me 12 bucks Nikki. Thanks.
Impressive, but preaching to the choir a bit, I fear (will casual, undecided viewers bother with the download and install?). Meanwhile, I’m still waiting to see a final (non-teaser) one-sheet for this movie, which opens in three and a half weeks…
I think that the one great thing to come out of this movie will be the method in which it was shot as well as the usage of a camera that had to be reinvented for this purpose. The story itself seems like a cooked over Pocahontas with an amazing detail to things that the audience will never notice. maybe in time it will be considered “groundbreaking” but for now it will be just another Sci-Fi movie with lots of zeros allotted for its budget.
