EXCLUSIVE: Here’s the message Garth Ancier just sent to his staff. I can’t say this is a surprise: I’d been hearing rumors to this effect. UPDATE: I’ve learned Ancier told BBC 5 months ago in July of his plans to step down.
This morning we will announce that I intend to step down in March as President of the U.S. portion of the company, but remain a non-executive director of BBC Worldwide America.
Together we have achieved a great deal over the past three years and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished.
BBC America is performing at an all time high. We’ve increased distribution to 65 million homes, doubled primetime ratings and established a raft of mainstream hits including Torchwood, Top Gear and Primeval. Bringing ad sales in-house has increased revenue by 39% in year one and Mark Gall and his team have doubled the channel’s advertiser base. Establishing an in-house affiliate team makes our distribution efforts stronger and is already driving the roll out of BBC America HD. As many of you know, plans are also well advanced for the launch of pre-school channel CBeebies next year.
One of my proudest achievements is the commissioning of BBC World News America. Rome Hartman and his team have done a remarkable job. WNA has become a cornerstone of BBC America’s schedule and is retransmitted throughout the world. The program upholds all that is great about BBC News, but packages it effectively for the U.S. market. In its first year it won a much- deserved Peabody Award, and this year it has received six Emmy nominations – fingers crossed for December 7!
I believe we’ve now aligned BBC America, DVD and DTO to effectively exploit content across all windows. In digital, Beth Clearfield has spearheaded important deals with Amazon, Xbox, Netflix and iTunes. BBC America is now one of the top 15 television providers on iTunes in the U.S. Next year, our digital story will get even stronger with the launch of a U.S. facing edition of BBC.com.
On the BBC Worldwide Productions front, Dancing With The Stars remains a reality juggernaut and is about to wrap its ninth season on ABC. I’m delighted Jane Tranter joined us in January to head up the U.S. production operation adding scripted production to our slate, and that our New York-based team, set up to serve the East Coast cable industry, has won several new commissions.
In Home Entertainment, Planet Earth continues to be a remarkable success for Burton Cromer and team. It is now the number one DVD documentary of all time in the U.S., selling over four million units. We look forward to the release of follow-up, Life, early next year.
The business is firing on all cylinders – and now seems a suitable time to pass the day to day running of the U.S. over to someone new. I sincerely thank all of you for your continued hard work and dedication. Without you we could not have grown the BBC brand so significantly or increased profits by 78%. I very much look forward to continuing to work with you in my new role.
A search for my replacement is underway – but in the meantime it’s business as usual!
Best regards,
Garth

A fine man and a great exec. Hope he’s moving on to even better things.
Well, I hope this means better programming is coming our way. BBC has a lot of really good stuff they don’t air in the US.
I done quite a bit of business w/Garth over the years – he always seems to bounce from one to the next without stepping in Sh** – amazing.
Why? What does a non-executive director of BBC Worldwide America do?
Under Garth
BBCA has become just a channel showing the same old reality shows on continual loop, and the channel launched its HighDef service without securing a single carriage deal so on its launch date no one outside of the studio were able to see the HD picture
Hey Interesting…..Garth creates piles of shit….and often avoids stepping in it because he is shown the door. It was Garth, and Teflon Bruce Rosenblum, who took the WB towards an older demo, killed the frog and thought Don Johnson was a great fit for the network demos. True, Garth is very smart but he can’t manage people for poop. And despite what you read in Ken Auletta’s book ”
Three Blind Mice” he is a political animal. I would venture to guess that BBCA has never had an executive with his smarts and/or connections so I have to wonder what is behind all this. I do think he was tired of the constant LA to NY to Europe travel…and maybe its a simple as that. He has tons of dough and doesn’t need a paycheck. Then again, how funny would it be to find Garth back in NBC after Comcast makes their deal???? Who knows????
Couldn’t agree with you more – exactly right.
BBC-A is growing in popularity, it’s just unfortunate that they’ve had to rely on so much non-BBC programming to get there. The badly botched BBC America HD launch earlier this summer didn’t help matters either. Hyping a new HD service endlessly for weeks/months and then having no carriage agreements wasn’t too bright.
This is not a surprise. They have been pushing him toward the door for months now as you noted. Despite all the spin about a 78% profit increase under his watch (it’s actually only 39%, he just doubled the number in his memo to staff) lets not forget that BBC America and the channel’s British fare has not attracted big audiences since he was brought over. The ratings are flat, down 14% from the previous year. His three year contract is over in March so the time is right to drop him. Despite his failure on this side of the pond, he is a smart man who can babble endlessly about wine and the internet until your eyes roll into the back of your head. As for him heading back to NBC?? Not a chance in hell!
Clear minded and clearly in the know, Leo. No way he goes to NBC. I might add Garth Ancier missed the obvious opportunity to take advantage of the BBCA, BBC Worldwide and BBCUK integration to launch a compelling slate of original programming. To watch the channel with the arguably the finest pedigree in the world program mediocre reality shows has been disheartening. I’m glad he’s so rich etc etc, but absolutely no vision from Garth whatsoever in terms of how to build a truly global network dedicated to giving the greatest voices in the world a platform to tell their stories. Add to that the squandering of branded shows– they let Ab Fab get made as a Pilot at Fox and you realize he didn’t really see the big picture at all.
mr. ancier is an amazing programming executive. when at WB he made the network. When at NBC (when allowed) he changed their programming.
(a far cry from present).
Let’s see…who’s looking for a smart exec? I can name many that need one!
I know from personal experience that Garth Ancier is a gifted television executive.
He is very smart, good natured, wise and kind.
I also know that the employees at BBC America will look back and know that Mr Ancier was the best boss that any of them have ever had–never a micro-manager, always supportive–the all-around best.
And one more thing. Now, I’m not too bright, but this quote by him “One of my proudest achievements is the commissioning of BBC World News America.” What exactly is commissioning? “Cause I sure as hell never hear that word used around my office. Did he smash a bottle of bad English wine (redundant statement) against a reporter and slide the poor pasty bastard out to sea, never to be seen on British soil ever again until he “commissioned” a good story?
The Brits are so much fun to tease:
Admiral Hornsbury the troops are lost. Well has someone found them. No sir, not lost, lost sir… they’re… Oh, yes, I see. Blast it. Well then, we’ve got a problem. Can’t fight a war without troops now can we? I’ve got an idea. What about… “commissioning” some more troops? Ah, yes sir, that sounds good. Go and do that then. And make sure it’s before the Germans arrive — we wouldn’t want them to just take over the place without a fight now would we?
“The ratings are flat, down 14% from the previous year.”
” To watch the channel with the arguably the finest pedigree in the world program mediocre reality shows has been disheartening.”
Speaking as a viewer, I can tell you why ratings are flat: Endless repeats of repeats of reality crap. No, Gordon Ramsay is not entertaining on the 4th viewing nor is My Big Breasts & I. Many of us have resorted to online viewing of current British programs, yup illegal, but this cable channel does not serve its audience. Who ever takes over will need to work hard to bring viewers back.
You Are What You Eat, You Are How You Clean Your House, You Are What You Sell At Auction, You Eat What Gordon Ramsey Wants You To Eat.
Isn’t that just about it for the daytime schedule?
Hallelujah! Ding dong, the witch is dead! Now, whoever takes over the helm of BBCA, please add more variety to the channel. There are a dozen or so BBC TV channels showing an amazing number of programs, yet we get the same horrid reality shows aired over and over, ad nauseum. And for crying out loud, add iPlayer to the BBCA website.
