These are all estimates. But in Australia today, NEW MOON‘s midnight results were the highest grossing midnight screening since STAR WARS: EPISODE 3 (which garnered $1.2M USD in May 2005). NEW MOON played on 466 screens and grossed a phenomenal $1.6M.
On Wednesday, NEW MOON launched No. 1 in France with 488,000 admissions for its first day from 751 resulting with $4.36M on Day One — which is 4 times what TWILIGHT did (140,960 admissions and gross $1.15M).
Also Wednesday, NEW MOON grossed $2.7M in Italy from 625 screens in its first day of release, with screens still to report. Currently NEW MOON is the 3rd highest Wednesday opening ever in Italy behind HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE and HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.
In Spain NEW MOON opened Wednesday with $2.2M from 652 screens. The 3rd best Wednesday opening day ever, just behind HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, and finally surpassing THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING.

So does it have a shot for a double or 2012 will still remain on top on the international circuit ?
Never underestimate the power of teen girls and their older sisters.
or women in their 30s.
or women in their 40s
based on this data i surmise that this film will make a sh*t load of mullah…old school.
Yay!
Taylor Launter is so hot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TAYLOR LAUTNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t believe the industry has not tapped into the tween/teen girl romance niche before. Its a freakin’ gold mind!!!! (and the lead actors can’t act!) Amazing! Although after 4 Twilights.. you’d think the girlies would get sick of it all..
The kids are going for it!!
Summit Entertainment must be pooping gold bricks
Awesome. Now this’ll give Summit cart blanche to release a bunch of other shitty movies and not care if they make a dime, and completely fuck up the releases of good movies that should do well *cough cough BAND SLAM cough cough*
Ya-hoo for Twilight Saga!! I knew it would break good!! And I haven’t even seen it yet since i am in USA!!
The actors are the greatest, what did you expect? And its something besides sex!! Although Edward and Bella and Jacob are good in those parts too! LOL!!
I am 62 years old, not a teeny bopper. Surprise!!
I really hope that’s sarcasm.
OK, the teens/tweens is not surprising and good for them to have something to look forward to. But 62 years old and waiting for this stuff is kind of creepy.
Kinda creepy? How about ABSOLUTELY creepy! It would be like my grandmother jonesing for my friends….ew
It’s not just teenagers who into the Twilight nonsense. It has brainwashed their mothers, too. If you go to any Twlight screening tonight at midnight, I bet half the crowds will be made up of women in their thirties and forties who are seeing the movie while their tween and teen daughters are home sleeping because they have school in the morning.
Oh yay, another way to trash the Vampire story line. Give it to the tweens…
Who probably haven’t wathced a real Vampire movie… Something that doesn’t sparkle. I like Vampire movies, but they need to be good. Oh well, another movie I won’t bother seeing… If it’s one thing I can’t stand is Bandwagon Jumpers..People only liking something cause it’s the IN thing to do.. *eyeroll*
i dont care what u say! i love twilight!!!!!
TEAM JACOB ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ Enough: I’m with ya there, buddy. When Leslie Nielsen in ‘Dracula: Dead and Loving It” has more bite than the Twilight vampires, we have a problem.
screens in Italy were 800, source Eagle Pictures (distributor)
i mean *total screens* were 800, so we should expect a total around €2.1-2.2 millions in the first day in italy
I LOVE TWILIGHT AND NEW MOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like my prediction of a gross of $500,000,000 may not be so farfetched. I am a 74 year old grandmother whose granddaughters introduced me to the franchise. I am addicted to the books and loved the movie Twilight. Can’t wait to see New Moon tomorrow night with one granddaughter and then on Wed. see it again with another granddaughter.
Good on ya Betty..its a great way for grandparents to share something exciting and fun with there grandchildren…I feel people who disapprove of anyone over the age of 20 years enjoying these.. are missing out on what we know helps make life fun and interesting and exciting..that is sharing common ground sometimes with people of all ages…is really awesome and very healthy…enjoy it the second time round…
And on a funny note I introduced Twilight to my granddaughters and there friends..having been a fan of Rob’s from Harry Potter and Bad Mothers Handbook days…we have are uses…
I went to a screening last night and despite what I thought there were almost more guys there then girls.
It was a fantastic movie and the men seemed to love it too (and no their girlfriends hadnt dragged them kicking and screaming there were actual groups of guys)
That’s probably because it was their boyfriends who dragged them kicking and screaming to see it. I’m just sayin’
I have a hard time believe our post. I have not met one male (straight male) at UCLA who wants to see this movie.
If they go, it’s because their girlfriend is insisting on it.
You mean you have not met one straight male who ADMITS that they want to see this movie. I am a straight male who saw it and liked it, but haven’t told anyone because it’s supposedly for teenage girls; imagine all the shame, teasing, and humiliation I would be subject to! It would be the death of my tough guy reputation. The only way out is to say I saw it because some woman in my life wanted to see it.
@Dianna L. Baker
I’m a year younger than you are, and even if someone gave me free tickets I would not go see New Moon.
definately i ll watch the movie..but i read the book and was not so impressed..i think “eclipse” is even much better…
however there are so many fans aorund the world and i think that the movie would do big demage at the boxoffice breakin already the record 4 the best single day with 72.6 miill.$..amazing..
I hate to burst the bubble regarding tween girls and hollywood discovering their demographic but…it was the tween girls and their mom’s who sent Harry Potter books into the stratosphere. So in essence hollywood does not understand that it is usually girls with the support of their mother’s who send these “book” driven franchises through the roof. As a mother of a teenager I have seen this myself as I went to book releases and midnight movie screenings for Harry Potter over the years. Trust me these are heavily attended by young girls. I’m not saying boys don’t read but perhaps they don’t become quite as emmersed and devoted as girls do. Of course I’m sure there are exceptions but the demographics bear out my observations. So here is one Mom not surprised by the power of female readers.
Hey! MY granddaughters talked me into watching Twilight on pay-per-view at my house because their parents said no. So… I sat and watched, and then I watched a second time to make sure I liked it. Then… I went out and bought the books and the next thing you know, all my girlfriends who are grandma’s too – are mentioning this great little movie and even better books! So – all of us old ladies aren’t in lust with Jacob or Edward for God’s sake – we are enjoying remembering our first loves and a new twist on a love story as old as time which seems to be setting the world on fire once again.
