UPDATE: Here’s What CBS Is Saying About Oprah
EXCLUSIVE: One of the biggest questions in the TV biz has been when, and even if, Oprah Winfrey would give up her daytime syndicated talk show to focus on OWN, her long delayed Oprah Winfrey Network in 70 million homes that was supposed to launch in place of the Discovery Health Channel as a joint venture between Winfrey and Discovery Communications. The industry has been betting that the daytime diva would extend The Oprah Winfrey Show for at least another year or two because of the huge cash license fees which stations have long paid her. But people around Oprah are telling me that won’t happen. They say that Discovery Communications chief David Zaslav has demanded that Oprah “move it or lose it” — move her talk show to OWN, or risk losing the Oprah Winfrey Network altogether. I’ve learned that in coming days Winfrey and Discovery will issue a press release announcing OWN’s on-air launch for the start of 2011. And, in several weeks, Oprah will tell the public that she’s ending her syndicated Chicago-based daytime talk show when her current deal runs out and moving it to OWN headquarters in Los Angeles probably as soon as mid-2011.
Hardest hit by the news will be CBS Television Distribution which syndicates the show, Also hit will be ABC’s owned-and-operated stations which make up Oprah‘s core station group, and also Sony TV execs who’d been hoping Oprah would deliver any extension of her daytime talker into their hands based on the success they’ve had this season syndicating Dr Oz, Harpo’s latest daytime talk show star). “Les Moonves, Bob Iger, and Sony will flip out,” one of my insiders says about Oprah’s news. “The only winner is David Zaslav.”
*UPDATE: My news this morning caught CBS by surprise. The Eye was counting on a 1- or 2-year renewal of The Oprah Winfrey Show. “In all honesty, we have not heard she’s made a decision yet whether to continue,” an insider tells me. ”We think we’re still in the talking stages. To our minds, it’s a non-decision.” CBS had scheduled a face-to-face meeting a month ago with Oprah and her personal and professional posse at her Santa Barbara compound to discuss her plans. But one of the people in the close group of people around her passed away. So it was canceled, I’ve learned. CBS is quick to point out that, a few years back, Winfrey re-negotiated her distribution deal with CBS TV Distribution so it ”gets a lesser fee now”. The result is that, when Oprah stops her syndicated talk show and moves it to OWN, ”It will be a hit for us, but not until 2012. And with the lower syndication fee, it’s not as big a hit as it would have been,” a CBS insider tells me. Besides, CBS has seen Oprah claim time and time again over the years that she’s “retiring” from the syndicated show. But to take Oprah to a nosebleed cable channel even if it reaches into 70 million homes? “She has always respected the fact that the pulpit she has now gives her such a huge amount of influence.” And CBS also plans to remind her that, thanks to the syndicated show, ”she by far makes more money on TV than anybody else.” Now let’s see how persuasive Les Moonves and his people can be.*
I’m told that right now Oprah and her advisers are trying to figure out what to do with her mini-city in Chicago, and which personnel she can and will move out to LA in the next six months. Also Discovery will have to renegotiate her own deal. Even though it has yet to go on the air, OWN has experienced tremendous turmoil since it was announced, including the entrances and exits of many top female TV executives — three in just the last 7 months. Combined with the unprecedented delays, that has come at a cost for Discovery. “It’s so upside down because Discovery has lost millions of dollars since it was announced,” a source tells me. “It was rumored 50/50 that Zaslav would throw in the towel and her network wouldn’t launch. But Zaslav sees it as a loss leader.”
Last week, Oprah called a confab in Los Angeles and met with everyone associated with OWN. She also personally heard programming pitches. Only very recently has she put in place her two current top lieutenants to run OWN (but for how long?): Christina Norman, who at the start of the year was named CEO after spending 17 years with Viacom Inc’s MTV cable empire before stepping down as MTV president. And Lisa Erspamer who this week was named OWN’s Chief Creative Officer and is a 15-year veteran of Harpo Productions where she served as co-executive producer of Oprah since 2006. But I hear that recently appointed OWN head of programming Jamila Hunter, NBC’s former SVP of alternative entertainment, is out looking for a job after just 3 months.
I understand that Oprah was supposed to tell CBS Inc chief Les Moonves back on October 1st what her plans were but then cancelled several scheduled calls to him. Winfrey’s distribution deal was re-signed in 2004 with King World which is now part of CBS Television Distribution. It expires in fall 2011 which marks the end of Oprah’s 25th season. (News reports said a clause existed in her current contract that would have let her end the show in 2010, but that she chose last year to extend the show’s run through the contract’s full term.)
She said in 1997 that she was planning to retire, then renewed her contract through 2002. Then in 2002 she said she would call it quits in 2006, but in 2004 she re-upped through 2011. Back then she was still enjoying high ratings and fat cash license fees from TV stations and big popularity. But that was then, and this now. Her ratings have been in double-digit decline in recent years. And given the financial crisis which has put TV stations on life support because of the plunge in advertising, Oprah was unlikely to be able to demand another big cash raise to continue her show in syndication — especially in today’s climate when stations are bartering with syndicators, not paying them. “It had the potential to bankrupt stations. She would have wanted all cash up front. GMs would have told her to go away,” one source explains to me. When Oprah leaves syndication, it will open up time slots and free up station cash not just for syndication’s existing stars (which now include Harpo-started Dr Phil, Rachael Ray and Dr Oz) but also new ones.
Leaving the extraordinary visibility she enjoyed through syndication for a nosebleed cable channel is a huge gamble for Oprah as a TV brand. There’s the possibility that OWN could distribute her new talk show for syndication. But I hear no one is talking about that now. In the U.S., Oprah is viewed by an estimated 7 million people a day (though that audience has fallen by half over the past 10 years) and in 140 countries. It has been estimated that she currently earns about $275 million a year in showbiz income. Long the No. 1 rated daytime talk show, Oprah also made Winfrey into the richest African American woman worth $2.3B at last count, a worldwide media personality with a powerful media empire around her, a celebrated actress who doubled as a film and television producer, a force in both book and magazine publishing.
But there’s also no question that Oprah is a much more controversial figure now than she’s ever been before because of her wealth and fame and politics. “She’s lost her authenticity. Like when she said, ‘It’s good to have your own private jet.’ Or when she shut down the City of Chicago with this season’s ’flash mob’ for the opening show. Where’s the relatability?” The word internally at ABC is that TV stations have been cringing at Oprah’s past and present and continuing support for Barack Obama, from her appearance at his inauguration (see photo) to her visits to the White House, because it antagonizes half the viewing public who don’t share her politics. Now Oprah will no longer be in their faces: instead she’ll be isolated on cable. The biggest question now in the TV industry is whether it’s “Good Luck!” or “Good Riddance!”
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Just saw a big puff of smoke come from the vicinity of Columbus Avenue and West 66th Street here in NYC … some sort of implosion at ABC … maybe they’ll go back to the old 4:30 movie! It’s Elvis Week!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2es-lfRSDOI
That is one of the best ideas I have heard in a LONG time!
I for one would like to say “Good riddance!”
I’m with you on this. I’m so tired of her superior, know-it-all attitude. She knows how we should lose weight, what books we should read, what issues should be important, and what gadgets are worth having. She’s anothr billionaire limousine liberal like Striesand who wants to tell other people how to live when their huge financial cushion has them completely removed form the lives of struggle and strain that so many people face every day. Shut up, Oprah!
Shut up Jeff! Sooo, she gives opinions, just like you did. You either like them, or you don’t. Period. On the other hand, along with giving her opinions, she also gives her time, money, and influence to help Millions of people. So let me guess, that liberal giving/charity is also to be hated. Give me a break.
I could careless I don’t watch anyway. But I know that she has helpped alot of people. Bought homes and visited. She never came and asked her viewers for a dime unlike your hero Palin who wouldn’t give you a penny but will beg little old ladies to send her money.
Cry me a fucking river.I so hate how people go into the same crybaby rant whenever a story is about someone of privilege. They think they are better than us, waaaaahhh! They don’t know our struggled, waaaaaah! They always try to tell us what to do, waaaaaah!
If you don’t like her show, politics, and influence then don’t watch her, problem solved.
She’s a billionaire and I can almost bet you are not…………
Her public expression of her political views was the nail in the coffin. I’m an Independent, so, it didn’t matter to me one way or the other. However, many celebs in Hollywood need to ‘catch a clue’ that their audience is comprised of many people with diverse ideas, beliefs, political affliations, etc, etc, etc.; and, most (if not all) of those people are not interested in listening to ‘celebrititions’ when they get on their ‘soapbox.’ The audience just wants to be entertained—period.
Actually, Oprah’s show is focused on advocacy and education, not entertainment–have you missed that?
Wow! A lot of GOP’ers, Tea Baggers, “conservatives” and Limbaugh listeners here huh? Well, I say CONGRATULATIONS Oprah! Nevermind those narrow minded detractors who are so obsessed with Obama hatred that they want to punish you for helping to get a friend elected.
BTW: You notice how they all think alike… Do you realize how many of them used the exact same words “Good Riddance” in their posting… Maybe they all listened to Glen Beck today and are waiting for Sean Hannity to give the a new phrase to describe their joy at your departure.
I think she, like everyone else has a right to express her beliefs. who among us didn’t or doesn’t express our own political and public views. Maybe she was right… maybe she was wrong. But then again that goes for us ALL Who voted for and publically backed Bush not once but twice and why. They were wrong as well. But is was their right to express their opinion and to vote for and back whom they wanted. But truth be known. No matter what we can’t overlook all the good that Oprah has done for so many people. Helping people who were homeless, helping to connect people to loved ones, and touching the lives of so many people. Not to mention all the give aways and the shows that other people have gotten as a result of being on her show and recieving backing. So suck it up people. No one amoung use is perfect and I’m sure none of the people complaining or downing her has accomplished anywhere near the things that she’s done. So in my opinion hats off to you Oprah. your a strong black women from humble beginnings who have shown the world that anything is possble through strength, dedication and hard work, which if you asked me is exactly what a good role model should be. Thank you!
Excellent point.
Even before the 2008 elections I found her ‘just plain folks’ demeanor laughably phony, although the 2008 elections was the nail in the coffin for me.
I’m also tired of her constant whining about her struggle with weight. That woman has more resources at her fingertips than most of us can ever dream about. Suck it up Big O and say no to the snacks.
I hope that billionaire Oprah won’t cry too hard over the negative comments on this post. I’m sure that her critics haven’t been watching her show….too busy listening to Limbaugh.
Limbaugh is every bit as bright and business savvy as Oprah. I like both of them to a degree.
this is funny! oprah has promoted so many white people and helped them become multi-millionaires and you didn’t seem to mind then, but when she -again- promotes someone black – there is an uproar.
where were you for the past 25 years when all of the authors, doctors, self-help professionals (all being white) were on her show and launched their careers as a result of appearing on the oprah show – where was your outrage that she was not promoting blacks, latinos, and others.
where were you these past 25 years – we could have used your help!
Right on, DF!
Television equals entertainment.
Face it Oprah and Letterman…you are merely highly-paid media tools and we do NOT want your opinion on anything political!…that is NOT entertaining…..Morons.
John Voight, Ted Nugent, Chuck Norris, Fred Thompson are some of the people in Hollywood who need to catch a clue! When they portest against Obama they are in the right lane but when Streistand speaks she is an idiot! You people are a bunch of blasted hypocrits!
I couldn’t agree with you more. Why don’t these star types keep their stupid opinions to themselves. We have to listen to the singers,to hollywood jerks, YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING SHUT UP AND SING. oprah GOOD RIDDENS TO BAD RUBBISH.
Give me a break! Dr. Phil, Jon Stweart, George Clooney & other celebs are running around blabbing about THEIR political positions, too, but no complaints about them! The obvious difference is that they’re WHITE and Oprah’s black, so it stands to reason that fair-weather fakes like yourself would prefer that she keep her black mouth shut (& pretend it’s still the old days.) Well, I got a wake-up call for YOU-those old days are dead & buried & good riddance & black people will NOT tolerate any longer being silent. We are not going away and we will not shut up. Deal with it!
Well, actually my desire to see Oprah go has nothing to do with her skin color. I also don’t watch movies with George Clooney or Alec Baldwin. I’d like to see Dr Phil go away. I’m also not a fan of Jon Stewart, although he isn’t quite in the same category because he does a comedy-political show, so one would expect his politics to show. The others have alienated me because of their constant harping and desire to tell me how to live. Rosie O’Donnell, Sean Penn, Jeanne Garafolo and others of their ilk rub me the wrong way, so I don’t support their activities with my money either. Race isn’t part of any of it.
Are you crazy or what? Most Americans want ALL CELEBRITIES to SHUT UP! We don’t care what they say about politics. We watch their movies or television shows and most don’t care about them, their lives, or their politics BLACK OR WHITE. Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder?
Wow, you know there are two types of racism, those who committed it decades ago… and those who never want to let it go… Barack was elected, we have afro americans in the supreme court, time to let the racism excuse go. Orale
Hysterical- you just played the race card. FYI- no one cares that she’s black, as evidenced by her long, lucrative career. We care that she’s become political, and as such, needs to reap the consequences. She also tells us how to worship God. Some people don’t like to be lectured every day.
Thank GOD!
Now I won’t have to see her face as I am channel surfing!
Once again yet another person complaining about seeing Oprahs face on television that apparently don’t have their own show. Yeah way to go just as i told another idiot get your own show because obviously America hadn’t seen much of you on TV and probably want because you’re not important. Just keep typing about how un happy you are because Oprah is making her own life choices and can because she cares about her thoughts and not those of people that don’t have anything better to do but to bash her. LC
Good riddance I say
I’ve enjoyed Oprah over the years, but she has changed. I won’t miss her show once it’s gone from the regular network.
I’ll be lite on you yeah she has changed and it’s called aging. Do you not agree the older you get the more you realize things aren’t what they seemed. Duh o and I’m pretty sure you not missing her show want make a difference out of the MILLIONS that will still follow her. Maybe she will miss your show lol lol o yeah that’s right you don’t have a show.
Michelle, you are an example of why so many people are tired of her, your lack of respect. That self righteous I know what is best attitude.
Whenever you take public office, teach (which I do) or assume any leadership you will have detractors.
They have a right NOT to like her and say whatever they want. She has used her position to influence millions, some good and some bad positions.
I have never even SEEN the show but I read, a lot and that’s how I got here and I think your Oprah worship is weird, you have taken the time to respond to way to many of these people. Then you call them losers for being on computer?
On top of that, I doubt Oprah would care, she might even say “let it go girl.”
Michelle,
Welcome to the LOSER club! Your spelling and grammar is so atrocious that it’s hard even to tell what point you’re trying to make!
Ted
how could you say that about oprah she has done alot. She has helped alot of people over the years. She has helped many people in alot of areas and I for one will miss her show. So what if oprah is with the president in what ever issue he has that shouldn’t change the way you feel about her and the good she has done over the years. I am so angry at people who judge her for what she does because she is a good person and their should be more people like her in the world. She is kind and a very loving person and she talks about the facts that she has researched and not about the gossip that a lot of people do. So you should get the facts before judging her or anyone else.
My hope—that it become good riddance. All success eventually leads to obsolescence, and Oprah is no exception—just as Phil Donahue was no exception when Oprah took the reigns from him.
She has had her day but now has turned what was once a quasi public service type show, into a personal agenda, Obama pushing, Karaoking, Car give away (taxes at your own expense please) reckless, directionless Chirade.
Her day has come and gone..as it was once time to push the Older White Man out of the way, its now time to push the Older Black Woman out of the way—-we need a young Asian or Latin Man or Woman now. Everybody gets a turn now Oprah.
Don’t be jealous it gets you no where but her in front of a computer screen mad because Oprah can do what the hell she wants with her own life lol
When Oprah endorsed and helped President Obama elected, she lost all credibility with me and everyone that I know. Good riddance!
everyone you know, Mike?!?! Poor Oprah, she’s definitely screwed now. She might as well pack up and give up entertainment for good. And Obama, he should definitely ignore the polls that still have him liked by the majority of the country. He should probably also give up any idea of running in 2012.
oh my, she lost credibility with you? What is going to do? I guess continue building credibility with the millions of others who aren’t retarded. So what. She can’t support someone that you don’t agree with? People aren’t credible if they have different political beliefs?
“Everyone that you know”?….I guess you polled them I hope that Oprah isn’t too upset that “everyone that you know ” isn’t happy with her choices. Would “everyone that you know” have felt better if Oprah had campaigned for John McShame? And by all means, you and “everyone you know” shouldn’t watch Oprah when Sarah Palin is on her show.
why cant people handle politics even if it is not the same you believe. She has done a lot of good for many people around the world.
She doesnt even bring politics onto the show. So now you know who she voted for, who cares? Are people so divided and small-minded in this Country that you will not watch someone who may have voted differently than you. Just watch Fox 24 hours a day and get you “news” from them if you have a problem. You will be misguided the rest of your life if you keep watching them….good luck!
Oprah lost my allegiance several years ago. I got tired of being urged to worship at the ‘Church of Oprah’ and surely did not appreciate having her politics and odd beliefs shoved in my face. Her ‘interviews’ with Gore and Bush did me in….the bias was overwhelming. She seems to have become enamoured of her own press, that she was omnipitent. Go to your cable station Oprah, good riddance.
Totally agree with you. She turned me off years ago and I long tired of people thinking that “Oprah says” has some validity.
I couldn’t agree more. Oprah began losing credibility years ago with me when she thinks we’re all interested in seeing her face on her own magazine every month, (same for Martha Stewart)that school she opened in Africa, road trips with Gaile (who cares)AND following this Kabuki president who is, everyday, becoming more of NOT who he says he is! We had warnings of Rev Wright and Bill Ayers BEFORE he got elected and silence from her and NOW communist czars, Van Jones, indoctrination of kids and she STILL won’t address any of this after following him so passionately and I know a lot of it is the network as well. She is so blantantly biased for her own race & protects Obama. Don’t forget how she refused to even interview Hillary Clinton, & Sarah Palin…until after Obama got elected. Finally, going to Copenhagen…please, get over yourself Oprah!! Actions speak louder than words and her behaviour is unforgiveable and very ANTI- who we thought Oprah was all about to begin with, to help women of all races. That “Secret” book was actually previously written about years and years before by several different authors and was not a new concept. (the Power of the Sub-conscious Mind to name just one)She managed to help white men like Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz and even though I like them both very much she also endorsed that crazy sweating doctor kook that killed a few people. Time to stop blind allegiance to Oprah. She has same qualities of this president, imperious & narcissistic. It just got to be too much. Good Riddance!
Lambada- You need to stop watching Fox news. You have just listed all the crazy things they try to brainwash people with. When I read your list, I could immediately tell you get your information only from Fox. This has nothing to do with Oprah but you really need to get informed from a variety of sources, not just Fox news and radio people that are hired to sway you to serve the wealthy few and think for yourself.
Hummmm, it sounds to me that someone actually watches the show. To be so informed on the subject and yet claim not care; very fair and balanced.
I so agree! Who in this world would put their own picture on a magazine cover year after year after year. She sure does love herself. I would be humiliated. Her shows are now mainly politics and Hollywood Stars. The shows used to have substance.
Most people are working when the Oprah show currently airs. The people who are home at 3pm are not the people who make this country great! I am glad she is going to cable where she and Gail can continue their girl talk and be out of the mainstream. She should retire to Santa Barbara with her dogs and lose the weight (again).
Two words for Oprah: Howard Stern.
Stern was a culturally relevant force (for good or ill), making headlines and serving as an important stop on promotional tours. But since he retreated to Sirius, no one talks about Howard Stern or his shoes. He might as well moved to Radio Azerbaijan for all his relevance today. The same will happen to Oprah when she shuttles off to the the upper digits of basic cable. Big stars and big studios will find another talk show distributed on broadcast to fill the Oprah-shaped void.
In short, this is great news for Tyra Banks.
Oprah has jumped the shark. She has shown her true colors as a racist and that she is full of crap on many subjects. She is a TV host not a spiritual leader.
There is a lot of hate on this message board. You all might not like Oprah’s personality or politics but she has made a lot of money and done a lot of good for others–much more than any of you have. She still has a huge audience so clearly there are millions who do not think the way you do.
By the way, Oprah is not a racist. You have no proof of that.
I’m not a huge Oprah fan but I don’t think she’s a racist and comments like your’s should be backed up with facts. Your tone is disrespectful to all readers when you throw out unsubstantiated assertions. How is Oprah a racist? Explain.
She is a RACIST even if you dont like it! She endorsed Obummer for only 1 reason, he is black. If Obummer was white she would not have endorsed him, just like she never had before. Get over it, she is a RACIST and all of the world has seen hers, and many others, views. If is looks, smells and walks likea RACIST… it is a RACIST!
She IS a racist and showed that fact begining years ago when she verbally attacked a white middle-aged woman during a question and answer episode. The soft spoken woman asked why it was acceptable for young black men to use the “N”….Oprah was a like a rabid animal.
its idiots like you that make me so ashamed of my race… she may have gotten political (which is her right) but she is not a racist… get a clue she has done more for humanity than most celebs period …
But yet Rush Limbaugh can not only be called a racist, but also be discriminated against when trying to buy an NFL team. You see the thing is, is that racism works both ways.
I L O V E O P R A H.
She has grown and matured right in front of our (TV) eyes.
I am impressed with what she has created in her life.
She inspires a whole lotta people in this world (the world that is bigger than the USA).
And because this is America, she has the right and the power to support any political candidate she wishes. I admire her for taking a stand, speaking out and following her heart even if her choice was not our choice. I wish there were more people in America with the guts to be who they are and not shy away from it, I wish there were more people like Oprah, & not just complain all the time.
I hope she sticks with mainstream TV for a couple more years and mix-up her format a bit.
The negative pattern of competition between women explains why some women are hating on her. Since they “don’t have what she has” they will diss her to make themselves feel better.
Oh well.
Oprah has done something else right before our eyes. She has done her inner work, cleaned out the cobwebs and lives a life she is proud of. How many of us still need to do our inner work?
Go get’um Oprah
i agree. i love oprah and i don’t think she is perfect but i admire many things about her. to think she has lost ‘all’ credibility because she wanted to do some political work is shallow on the part of the people passing judgement on her. it tells me more about them and their fair weather friendery than her. it really disheartens me to see so many unconstructive negative comments. oprah has done a lot to get child molestation out of the world of denial and into the light. oprah has done much to get folks reading again. oprah does so much with her money for others because she won’t forget what it was like for her growing up. to ditch oprah because she’s only 90% good is out of proportion.
Who can be anymore racist than Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly and Hannity? They dole out crap every single day! Oprah is entitled to her opinion just as anyone else. People like you, go out of your way to viciously attack anyone who doesn’t agree with your point of view. We all sit behind a computer and spew forth our ugly thoughts and comments. Why? We feel safe and powerful. Get a life and move on. Most of the posts on this site attack Oprah because of her political beliefs. What does that have to do with her show? Isn’t it amazing how other people can assert themselves about who they favor on national tv or via radio, but Oprah has to be quiet? Give me break. I know some of you are going to be really hyped up when you read this post. Go ahead, comment. I win either way. Oprah, do what is best for you. People are going to talk anyway.
)
so long Oprah! it’s been a Helluva Ride
I say… Good Riddance!! She is too big for her own britches!
Why are so many men, or a writer who is using a man’s name in this comment section upset with Oprah and writing such hateful comments?
Oprah didn’t cause the mess that this country is in. Oh, but I forget, it’s easy to blame.
Tip for all: make your life the best it can be by starting right now.
FU Oprah you suck! Whether on TV, Cable is does not matter, you are racist scum!
What an a**ehole you are! You sound like a true bigot!! Carter was right afterall…Folks like you can’t stand Obama because he’s black. She’s alright when she backs Bill Clinton but a racist when she supports Obama? Maybe she should left you and the rest of America to the disaster that would have been McCain-Palin!!!
Wow, wonder who the racist really is, given the extreme of your comment over an entertainment figure. You folks were fine with Oprah as long as she played out your fantasies as the black woman who cried with you over your problems. Now that she’s “left the plantation” you’re still thinking she doesn’t “know her place.” The reality is that she — just like the radio and TV pundits you follow — has the right to choose and vocalize who she wants to support or not support and use the power of the mike to do so.
This is about as dumb a post as there is. Racist scum? I haven’t watched her show in years, but living in Chicago I know she does an awful lot of good for an awful lot of charities, likely a helluva lot more than YOU do.
Please, Oprah…Take Obama with you…
I think it is time for Oprah to move on…her viewership is declining in large numbers, her political stances are not popular with millions of viewers, she lost her ‘sizzle’ years ago and is now just another daytime talking head with not much to say that’s relevant to most of us non-billionaires.
If she can make it on cable, I wish her all the luck. Her hardcore ‘fans’ will certainly follow her (hopefully they have cable access)….but this very occasional viewer will not miss her, or her politics, one bit.
I would think someone of her stature and her immense wealth could be happy being offscreen for awhile. To chill out and do something really constructive with her wealth and her fame.
Maybe she could give her buddy Obama a low cost loan to help him bail out another non-worthy entity? Or maybe she should consider a run for the White House herself..she certainly couldn’t be any worse than her close friend is.
At least she’s worked for a living, she can parobably balance a checkbook, she built a very large and very successful empire, and although she still is irresponsible for jetting around in her own private jet instead of flying commercially; I’d much rather see her in DC than what we have now.
Hey Oprah! Just quit the boring TV gig and use your power, your moxie and your money to serve the fine citizens of this country. I think you could really do very well at it.
bitter much???
I somewhat agree with “Axeman”. I do applaud her efforts to address some serious social problems abuse for instance. She has is a philanthropist of a sort and I am sure she could do more with her resources. However, a lot of people fit that profile. She used to give credit where credit was due, thanking God for her success. Like so many of us, she did fall into the trap of self importance, I believe. Sometimes I become critical of people with so much power as well, but we just have to hope she directs her good deeds into more positive direction.
Oprah lost me when she exposed her liberal politics by supporting Obama. Add to that the way she pushes her spiritual views which seem to be open to anything BUT Christianity. We are a nation founded on Christian/Judeo principles so why she doesn’t EVER give a nod to the millions of Christians who live here is beyond me. So as far as I’m concerned, I’m happy she will be vanquished to cable so people will actually have to pay for to receive, resulting in her having less influence over impressionable people than she does currently.
Don’t worry, I think “Christians” have plenty of spokespeople in our country today. If Oprah doesn’t want to be one of them, so be it.
NOT Christian? Are you kidding me? I for one am tired of her spouting all her Christian nonsense. And don’t even get me started on Christians themselves. They’re all hypocrites and crazy zealots.
So what if she says what she feels, we all have a right to, and being a Christian yet focusing on other, forgotten religions that many shun is a good thing. There are thousands of shows and movies devoted to Christianity, but with Oprah, you get reality. And that reality is that there is more than one answer.
Do you think, muslim nations are producing and broadcasting movies and TV shows about Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Tao and other non-Islamic faiths?
Fool.
With Oprah you get reality? That’s like saying living in Santa Barbara is a good example of American living! LOL!
Oprah is biased and peachy girl has fair point. You may not like those facts but they are true. Our country looks and shows more respect for Buddhism (which killed 30,000 people in a massacre in Japan) for Muslims (The wise Zaid in Lost is an example) although there crucifying a rapist this week AFTER they behead him is ok with me.
I dont care one way or the other, but peachy does have a fair point.
I you ever paid notice to her over the years, you’d know she’s a Baptist, or similar religion. She does, however, believe in the power of prayer, tolerance and acceptance of all of God’s creatures. She goes beyond the narrow boundaries of certain restrictive, intolerant organized religions.
I’m no big Oprah fan but I do respect someone who stands up for what they believe in (i.e. Obama, liberal politics, etc) rather than go for not alienating people to make more money. Also, I don’t go for all that spiritual stuff she talks about but at least it is more real than Christianity – some guy in the clouds who is supposedly so great but lets people suffer. People years ago believed in Zeus and all the Greek and Roman gods and that is how you will look to our future descendants – silly and uneducated.
I’ve always wanted to ask Oprah why she would lie about something so provable as her name. She says it’s from the Bible. I read the Bible through every year from Genesis to Revelation and have NOT found her name there. One name that is similar is “Orpah,” a Moabitess (pagan) who was married to one of the sons of Naomi (Ruth 1:4).
Good riddance.
When Johnny Carson left NYC for LA everyone said he’d lose his edge and he’s been on too long, at that point ten years.
Of course the change was what Carson wanted and he thrived and stayed number one for the next 20 years.
Don’t count Oprah out.
PS. IMHO losing Jamila Hunter from OWN is a big mistake.
The only thing I care about with this story is that it will bring several dozen production jobs – if not hundreds – to Los Angeles, and help boost the house/apartment rental market near the OWN studios/offices (isn’t that on the Miracle Mile?)
What is she waiting for.
Why doesn’t she make the move today.
She has enough money in the bank to pay the penalties on any contracts.
Move today, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
I figured it would be just a matter of time before we saw the end of Oprah. Her backing of ‘The Messiah’ opened my eyes to what would happen to her future when I saw my wife, a huge Oprah fan, quit watching her instantly due to her open support of Obama. If my wife would give up Oprah like that, then I figure there must be a huge fan base erosion.
Good riddance, Oprah.
I’m pretty disappointed by the people who are no longer watching Oprah.
I have NEVER been a regular watcher of her show. Just not my thing. But for someone to have been a ‘fan’ of her, and her show, to say that they quit because she backed “The Messiah” speaks volumes of that person: first for labeling President Obama ‘The Messiah’, and secondly, for not watching her show (which is a TALK show, as in ‘entertainment’) because of who she supported politically.
I don’t think that there is any fan base erosion. I think that over time, some folx who used to watch have found other diversions.
… that is, unless for you, Oprah had been herself some ‘Messiah’

Sorry JayP, Oprah still has fans. Just because your wife and some others have stopped watching doesn’t mean there aren’t a whole lot of people who still do. She’s just fine and stands by her decision to get involved. You seem so opinionated, I really doubt you wouldn’t use the power you had if you were her to get the person you wanted in there. However, I do realize your Obama hatred (I mean, really, are you all still clinging on to “The Messiah” bullshit?) clouds your ability to think rationally.
So I take it you and your wife don’t watch movies with any actors who supported Obama? You boycott everyone who supported him, right? What about other candidates you haven’t liked in the past, do you boycott their supporters also??
I point this out because I think there’s an underlying issue of race here – a lot of Oprah’s viewers accepted her despite her being black. And once she stopped what was essentially apologizing for it, THEN on top of that supported a black candidate she became unacceptable. I’m certainly not calling you a racist – just saying it’s definitely a factor in all this anger toward her, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but pretending that’s not the case IS wrong.
Oprah is an American and has a right to express her preferences. She did not mention him once on her show during the whole campaign! She knew where to draw the line. She appeared at a rally with Maria Shriver and Stevie Wonder. Everyone appears at rallies. Bruce Willis and Schwarzenegger, before he became governor, spoke at the Republican convention — 2000, I believe. I repeat once again, SHE DID NOT ENDORSE OBAMA ON HER SHOW, as if he were a good book to read. That would’ve been different, an abuse of power. No candidates appeared on her show and Obama has not come on yet. Palin will be first. Goodness, people; pay attention.

Yeah, another bitter fed up white man. So, I should stop watching Kelsey Graham or Dennis Miller because of their views. What does your politics has to do with your line of work? Nothing. How much has Oprah given to charity? How much can you learn from her shpw? A lot.
It seems to me that a lot men are giving their two cents here but who actually watches Oprah? Women with some sense and obviously your wife does not have any because she is not able to distinguish the two. Trust me I would not want your wife to watch the show either. Good riddance to your wife and please take all of her types with her.
Look out Golden Corral ……. Here comes Opraaauuuggghhh
If you or anyone for that matter thinks that people are going to stop watching The Oprah Winfrey Show you are nuts!
Sorry but that is about the truth of it.
Well, I guess you showed us you’re nuts, Gary.
I quit watching it a couple of years ago.
I wish her well, whatever happens. If she does decides to continue to
be in front of t.v. So far as she’s shown in the U.K.I will continue to watch her. She is the best, and very good at what she does.
I wish her all the best for the future.
May God Bless her and continue to guide her.
I agree with the person that wished Oprah well. She is fabulous, and when she gets focused and put her mind to it she can do anything she wants. I think those of you who are being so critical of Miss Winfrey or our WONDERFUL PRESIDENT should ask yourselves does your harsh comments have anything to do with you being intimidated of such a successful black woman, and such a wonderful intelligent president as the one that God has blessed us with. I say more power to you Oprah and God bless America for having the fortitude to have President Obama as our leader!!!
