UPDATES HFPA’s 2010 Golden Globes Nominations
Here I am posting the 2010 Golden Globes nominations held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with the awards to be broadcast on NBC live on January 17th. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: it’s a completely meaningless awards show by a scandal-riddled organization on a network desperate for any kind of ratings. Why? Because the Golden Globes have zero integrity. Studios and networks who lavishly lobby the HFPA almost always score nominations. Stars win in direct correlation to their glamour quotient. Everything about the awards is geared towards hyping the media’s interest and the telecast’s ratings. Even the small motley group of freelancers who belong to the HFPA won’t grant membership to the real foreign journalists at the prestige newspapers across the world. NBC and Dick Clark Productions could clean up the Globes but choose not to. Instead, the entire entertainment industry props up this pathetic show because it’s seen as a night-long marketing tool. Therefore, it’s ridiculous for anyone to consider the movie categories as a window on the Oscar frontrunners. So I refuse to treat these nominations with any seriousness. (And if you don’t want that, then for crissakes stop reading me…)
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

“And the truth shall set you free.”
So glad you’re out there doing what you do, Nikki!
Totally agree with JP! thank you Nikki!
Yet, you’re up at 5:30am printing the full list of nominations for the same reasons that the HFPA, Dick Clark and NBC forge ahead with the Globes anyway. Give me a break. When does any organization that would single out a “best” anything be considered a treasure trove of integrity? Lighten up. It’s called show business.
Oh please, don’t even try to point out Nikki’s hypocrisy. It’s way to easy a job.
There’s no hypocrisy involved. Nikki is an entertainment journalist and the Golden Globes, unfortunately, is entertainment news. There’s nothing hypocritical about doing one’s job.
Nikki — You are 100% correct. Unfortunately, most celebrities go along with the sham —and sham it is. It is a silly over-hyped mess and because so much money is involved, it will never go away…but, winners should hold their Globe in front of a mirror and think over its true worth!
Totally agree. The whole thing is laughable. I’m angry that “Up your Ass” – “Up in the Air”, or whatever it’s called, keeps getting press. Makes me sick.
Up in the Air is the worst piece of crap I’ve seen this year. Its a yawn fest.
Care to explain why? I loved it.
And yeah, the Golden Globes are a sham, but everybody knows they’re a sham. Even my parents have figured out that they’re not as important as the Oscars and desperate for stars. It’s still an entertaining night featuring lots of celebrities getting drunk, and that’s all its audience AND the HFPA cares about.
Um, if you don’t even know what the film is called, then why exactly are you so angry at it?
What?!? Hollywood touting something less than genuine and totally superficial?! Shocker!
Spot on as usual, Nikki.
Okay then, we get it! All awards are created by politically motivated self-serving idiots. Fine.
Then let’s have the Golden Finke’s.
C’mon!
Maybe we can get Tom Tancredo or Jim Demint or one of those rightwing chumps/chimps to investigate the immigration status of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Kudos for your work Nikki! You got out the info before the HFPA even had it on their site! I had to come here to make sure we had the right stuff in our TV spots. All I can say is if this creates work for some of us it can’t be all that bad. True it’s just a bunch of atta’boys, but it keeps some of us busy and that’s about the only real value of any of these awards. ( just my humble, but deadly accurate opinion)
Ms. Finke, you write a fun and super informative column. Thanks!
But I am curious about one thing missing in your post. Did you agree or disagree with any of the nominations? Methinks that would have been a gracious wrap-up to the ‘rant’ (which, as I am sure you know, is not just yours alone).
My $0.02
ta.
Nikki’s giving the noms no credence. Hence, no opinion on nominees.
Nikki, you are 100% correct on this. The best part is that most stars and studios are keenly aware of this. I remember a few years back a certain comedy producer stating that if his film (a semi satire of music biopics) got Globe noms, it was due to the lavish party they threw for the HFPA.
Also, didn’t Sharon Stone give all members of the HFPA a gold watch a couple years back, while campaigning for a nomination (it was either for Casino or The Muse)?
How these guys got the clout they seem to have in the public’s eye is beyond me.
It’s that time of year again. Snippy Yanqui nativists bridle at foreigners — the people who provide the lion’s share of Hollywood’s income, remember — daring to have an opinion about the year’s movies and tv shows. No other awards suffer the constant vituperation that the Globes do every year from Finke, Waxman et al. And is that because all the rest are as clean as a papal conclave? (Bad example, come to think of it.) Of course not — they’re all subject to the same intense influence peddling and marketing/publicity machines. The one thing that differentiates the Globes from the others is that most of its voters are, gasp, not American. And some of you just hate that. Time to get a life, Minutemen of Hollywood. And, by the way, yes, Sharon Stone sent out the watches. And they were all given back.
maybe you didn’t read the same post i did, onlooker, but nikki seems to be bridling at the lack of integrity of the event, not who’s doing the voting.
I agree that the Golden Globes are a joke, but…
Ricky Gervais is hosting this year!
So, I shall be watching.
love you nikki!!!!
the tobey maguire, julia roberts noms and ‘it’s complicated’ for best screenplay prove you right!
Even the Oscars are horrible. What’s the difference?
I agree. The Oscars are a joke too.
The difference is that people who have actually worked in the industry (at least some of whom possess some integrity and respect for the awards/voting) vote in the Academy Awards.
The HFPA is in it to suck up to the stars and be sucked up to (i.e. lavished with gifts/praise/attention). There are less than 100 of these so-called foreign ‘journalists’ (not all are published) and their qualifications are as extensive as mine: I like to go to the movies.
Dominick – you are the true Hollywood robot…you were probably siding with the guy who tried beat up the writer on the picket line at Fox…way to tow the company the line, whatever company you are in, company man.
On a personal note, and in all seriousness, your armchair assessment of me could not be further off base. Rearding my earlier post, the point is that it is silly to say the awards have no merit, yet race to be the first person to publish the nominations…even before the HFPA put it on their site! I understand Nikki’s a journalist, and an epic one at that. However, offering such a strong, personal opinion about an organization you’re racing to give press to just seems silly. NOT publishing the nominations, in light of the rant, would have been a much better example of not towing the Hollywood line, as you put it. I also think singling out the Globes as being overly corrupt when every single awards panel, without exception, falls victim to the same political maneuvering when awarding, is pretty short-sighted.
Well, I do enjoy the Golden Globe telecast mostly because it’s NOT the Oscars. I actually like the acceptance speeches, and how they get more slurred as the night goes on.
My beef however is that the awards are skewed totally to foreign films. I analyzed last year’s awards, and 75% went to non-Hollywood productions and personnel. If there’s a category where there’s 4 American actors and a foreign actor, or 4 American films and a foreign film, the foreign actor or film will usually win. An American has to do a really outstanding job to win.
Of course, the Oscars aren’t without bias either. They usually nominate indie films and ignore mainstream Hollywood films.
But maybe the Hollywood Foreign Press people should call themselves the Foreign Press in Hollywood since that’s their bias.
Though you’re above might be correct. It doesn’t negate the fact that everyone else (outside of Hollywood) considers these awards to be next to the Academy Awards or one below the AA’s. Might be unfortunate, but it’s true and that’s why people campaign so hard.
The celebrity culture requires these snooze-fests. Clooney will be there, looking dapper, smiling engagingly and then acting humble when he wins. It is so, so dull and unneeded for real people – but for celebs it validates what they are.
It’s kind of sad.
Oh please, all awards in Hollywood are about politics, campaigning and who kisses whose rear end the most. The Oscars are all about the campaign. Mr. Clooney will be everywhere you can find him as he is the expert and knows how to play the game. Someone like Renner or even Colin Firth will be steamrolled. If I see one more “up in the air SOARS” I might get ill. It is about ratings and money. Quality takes a back seat most of the time.
Christ, we live in the world where a man (whom I voted for and admire) is lavished with praise for defending war as he picks up his undeserved peace prize. Is it any wonder a movie awards show isn’t exactly a bastion of integrity and gravitas?
Come on. It’s prizes for movies. Who gives a crap if it’s “real” or “honest.” It’s fun. It’s glamourous. It’s entertainment. Isn’t that the point of Hollywood?
…haaa, you should look closer at KEY ART AWARDS… THIS IS the BIGGEST scam ever.
seriously…
I still get pissed at you, Nik, for always saying you “don’t do geek”. But I find it hilariously excellent that you bash the Golden Globes. I’m in agreement with you on this one!
I just have to say that Jennifer Carpenter rocked Dexter this year, but of course it’s not a glamorous part…
These “awards” underscore all the ugliest aspects of the business.
ALL the award shows are guilty of the same nonsensical nominating scenarios. It’s silly to single out the Globes. I’m a SAG award and EMMY voter. The systems are scattershot, without integrity, and wildly biased toward the most “familiar” products. There’s no hard relationship to rewarding quality in any of them. It’s all a popularity contest. I don’t understand the bashing of one over all others.
Yep, just another circle jerk to generate desperately-needed PR. It’s fun to think back just a few years ago (okay, maybe 10) when the show was pretty much a drunken fest because everybody knew it was bullshit (do we really know of these “critics” and their “publications”?)and as a result, show biz actually let its collective hair down and had a great time. Hell, likewise in the 80′s the local KABC newscast was the only pre-and-post Oscars show in town and the same loaded, fun attitudes prevailed. Just a hell of a great time watching celebrities stumble out of Swifty Lazar’s Oscar party at Spago lit like flares. Then it became “marketing/brand driven” and all that horseshit. Count me out that night.
Who cares if it’s a joke. it’s a fun night for all….viewers and participants. Much more fun than the Academy awards (which is also a joke).
