UPDATE: Here’s the indictment…
Remember when Fox’s Wolverine was leaked onto the Internet and there were all those wild rumors that this was an inside job? (One even blamed Rupert Murdoch!) Now the FBI has arrested a New York man indicted for illegally distributing pirated copies of the movie. The FBI said in a statement today that 47-year-old Gilberto Sanchez was arrested at his Bronx home early this morning after he was indicted December 10th by a Los Angeles federal grand jury for violation of federal copyright law. He’s expected to be arraigned today. The indictment, unsealed after Wednesday’s arrest, accuses Sanchez of uploading the copyrighted X-Men Origins: Wolverine to an Internet site last spring. He faces a possible three years in prison and $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or gross loss attributable to the offense. Here is Fox’s statement: “We are supportive of the FBI’s actions and we will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement to identify and prosecute any individuals who steal our movies.”

The Wolverine situation was unusual because the WORKPRINT was posted online. That, by definition, is an “inside job.”
OK?? so where did he get a copy of the movie to start with??
Ouch! This news is SCARY! Because of the immense penalty? No! The fact that it took the FBI almost a year to find a simple bootlegger!
No wonder we can’t find Bin Laden!
Well unless he was a ninja it did involve some inside elements. How did some guy from the Bronx get access to an Australian SFX company’s internal file? Either someone on the inside gave it to him (inside in this case being either Fox or Rising Sun) or he’s just some guy who was trading it on bittorrent, not the original uploader.
So… this guy was cleaning Murdoch’s yacht and found the DVD, right?
it’s strange how nobody mentions how he got the movie in the first place… anyone knows?
You would think that the FBI would have better things to do than shackle and bully some sad sack uploading a digital file of crappy superhero videos to pirate bay in between his trips to the deli for Slim Jims and the unemployment office. Ironically, this guy is probably one of Rupert’s larger consumers of superhero product.
Yeah, the poor guy, he should be allowed to steal whatever he wants as long as its from a Big Evil Corporation. What a fairy tale life you must live.
i wonder why he didn’t pirate a good movie.
How did a guy in the Bronx get his hands on an advance copy of the movie?
This is what the 6 month investigation yielded? Sounds like a fall guy to me. Gilberto Sanchez from the Bronx is the mastermind behind the leak?
Wow lol.
I never thought they would have to pay a FINE of $250,000.00.
Lol that is Outrageous. I thought it was to scare everyone haha.
As if fox and all the other stations havent benefited from the recession, they have the nerve to open their mouths. With more people watching the movies these days, they should be happy it leaked instaed of failing in the box office. No ones ever happy with how bad it already is, they always have to make it worse for any one else.
That logic is…stunning. Fox should be glad its movie got leaked online? Why?
leave the guy be
Wolverine was awful!
Kewl! now maybe they’ll find out who published the details of the Valerie Plame affair… so far the score: High Crimes, Misdemeanors and Treason = 0
Pirating a movie that Sucks Dog = SCORE! Point,Match Set! GOL! WooHoo Yay for our side!!
Legitimate, full-on LOL! Now prepare for the onslaught of Drudgies telling you what an awful pinko you are.
Sad commentary. I guess there aren’t any REAL criminals left. No bank robbers, rapists, terrorists. The FBI has nothing to do but chase the money. You people suck.
Stealing is a crime too. Deal!
Every movie ever made eventually becomes available for download in one way or another. Wolverine simply got a head start. If this Sanchez guy didn’t start it, someone else would have. Fox is just pissing all over themselves because they finally caught one of these “pirates”. We live in an age where literally every form of media is available to everybody and the executive billionaire douche bags remain virtually untouched. Let those who are less fortunate (including myself) download some movies every now and again. This one wasn’t even that good.
Well, boo hoo. We should feel sorry for you? Fine, next time I run short of gas I’ll siphon some gas out of your car. Deal?
no one steals a crumb from a pigs cake, i guess
And the lesson to be learned here boys and girls? Thats right; proxy, proxy, proxy.
What you think took the fbi so long?
This deserves a standing ovation.
And how exactly did I guy in the Bronx get the copy of the film?
this is bad publicity for the film industry. movie fan gets 250K fine and 5 years in prison. we’re just following the music industry into a big dark scary hole.
leaking the film early got people excited about wolverine. i kid you not.
Bravo! Bravo! I hope all the scum who download movies illegally onto the internet suffer similar fates. Those fucktards go all over Youtube, Twitter, etc. and advertise their movie-stealing sites, then ask for donations. When you hear about animation studios like Imagi, the makers of Astro Boy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, having to lay off 100 workers, you know it happened partly because of piracy. I have no sympathy for such thieves. I hope they all end up in jail.
So which lobbying or PR firm do you work for? I doubt this vitriol and righteous indignation came free of charge. While I am against piracy, even I can tell we are not getting the whole story here, unless this guy has some inside connection to the Workprint they are just making him a fall guy. Your frothing makes it smack of a witch hunt.
Let me add myself to the list of “how the hell did he obtain a WORKPRINT?” people. There’s something awfully fishy about this. I mean, a normal DVD release can be easily copied, compressed and posted, yeah, 10-year-olds can do that (the way the evil kids of my generation bought vinyl records, boah, remember those, taped them and made mix tapes for our friends and traded them on the schoolyard. Yes, I am THAT old!).
But a WORKPRINT? Sorry, no. Somebody inside leaked it, must have leaked it, the way somebody inside will leak (if they haven’t already) those DVD Screeners for Academy Award consideration. And that guy is just the one easy enough to hang.
I call the man a hero, he saved a lot of poor bastards money on that crap film, fox shouldn’t be allowed to make films that bad and ask people to pay for them.
