Hulu and Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment, creator of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, today announced the creation of If I Can Dream, a weekly show that will launch exclusively on Hulu and www.ificandream.com. “The partnership between the two companies will be the first of its kind, democratizing access to a television-quality program to audiences around the world, exclusively via the internet. If I Can Dream is the first in a generation of new post-reality entertainment shows that will document the authentic Hollywood story of five journeys to stardom, revealing every moment of triumph and struggle along the way.” It launches in America in early 2010.

i heart hulu.
This is awesome and so smart, hulu is killing it.
“Post-reality entertainment”? Give me a fucking break.
What the hell is post-reality?
If I Can Dream it, then Simon Fuller Can Exploit that dream. Seriously, do they breed those reality show contestants somewhere, the way Ireland breeds boy bands? (They do, incidentally. It’s a farm roughly 23 miles north of Dublin, and at night you hear that awful wailing that makes you think of Clarice Sterling’s Silence Of The Lambs )
When are they going to realize that not EVERY reality show (with the exception of Weight Loss shows or “Extreme Make-Overs”) has to showcase kids in their 20s who don’t know any better?
In THESE economic times? I think people are looking for an underdog or “normal” person/people to root for.
Not everyone in Hollywood is a Megan Fox/Brad Pitt.
How about featuring a person like a young Paul Giamatti (sp?) or the female equivalent? (Yeah, harder to find a successful example female-wise.)
Who (in the general public) feels bad for young, good-looking people?
If Susan Boyle taught us anything, Simon, it’s that the world loves an underdog.
Eye, meet fork.
What’s funny about this is that they are positioning this as groundbreaking, when television quality independent original programming has been on the web for years now. Arguably the longest running original web comedy? Something to Be Desired. Great suspenseful fictional narrative about a struggling actress? Sam Has 7 Friends. OC type narrative set in DC? Orange Juice in Bishops Garden. Super powered sci fi? Reservation. 50′s throwback sci fi? The upcoming Mercury Men. Plus all of the ongoing “post reality” videos that make up YouTube. iJustine, Ze Frank, Lisa Nova, so on, so forth.
I dig Hulu, but I hate blatantly false statements made for a press release. Ugh.
If they make this stuff for a few more years, nobody will remember what quality programming looked like.
Advocates of American Idol and their ilk argue that these talent shows democratize opportunity. The truth is they turn talent into a disposable commodity that has a shelf life of one year – max. After that, the show’s producers have to make room on the shelves for the next big thing. Over in the UK, reality television is facing it’s first real backlash http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8415750.stm
Keep eating crap, that’s what they’ll feed us. We deserve better.
I think if it were television quality it would be on ummm television
That’s a short sighted comment in an entertainment environment where production isn’t always in the hands of the studios anymore and distribution to a potential worldwide audience is much more easily attainable. Television production value is relatively easy to achieve these days for the independent producer, especially depending on what genre is being produced. It’s more and more the producers choice as to where they want their final product to end up.
