Cablevision vs Scripps Fight Over Food Network/HGTV Could Last Weeks Longer
UPDATE: Cablevision just gave me this hardball statement:
“We are sorry that Scripps’ current financial difficulties are making it impossible for them to continue our relationship on terms that are reasonable for Cablevision and our customers. We wish Scripps well and have no expectation of carrying their programming again, given the dramatic changes in their approach to working with distributors to reach television viewers.”
Scripps Networks Interactive made good on its threat from yesterday because of its war with Cablevision over programming fees. About 3 million subscribers are affected. Both channels have some special Sunday night programming scheduled, including an Iron Chef episode featuring ingredients from Michelle Obama’s White House vegetable garden, so I suspect there’ll be a surrender before then.

this is BS. Lets all cancel our cablevision/optimum contracts for 1 month. They are like a communist monopoly. funk them lets show em some real consumer buying power! cancel that contract
It’s a rotten shame what they’re doing to their loyal customers. It’s very tempting to drop cable altogether and switch to Dish Network….who the hell do the Dolan’s think they are anyway!!
Math? I don’t care about math! Stations like HGTV and Food Network are more than casual entertainment. They become part of the lifestyles of their viewers like me. They are the go-to stations when the rest of Cablevision’s lineup doesn’t have one good program on. (Why is it that all those stations don’t have one good movie to watch?)
Cablevision needs to understand that they are messing with people’s lives and that is not acceptable. The cost in viewer loyalty alone will be enormous if they don’t fix this now.
I could not agree more. I’m seriously considering jumping ship but our options are slim to none. Cablevisions’ monopoly and stranglehold on the consumers in our area of the country is deplorable.
I agree – this is crazy! Where is the “customer focus”?
who you all kidding cablevision NEVER gave a S!%T about us only the Green Paper in you pocket. Besides they stopped being a cable tv provider the day OPTIMUM started that is the cash cow now . I watch my bill go up every few months and i B!t@H every few months , and i get some automated crap on how good the system is and how HD is Free LOL get rid of all the low crap and make it all HD and then may be it will be worth $160. for expanded basic with phone and boost , BUT I THINK NOT . AS more Americans go into hock and cant afford to put food on the table you go up on the bill. Just wait till something better comes to watertown your DUST IN THE WIND . who cares about internet speed . And i hope washington does put the chains back on cable they don’t seem to be playing nice anymore without big brother watching.
HOW GREEDY CAN YOU GET?????? I am so DISGUSTED with Cablevision and the amount of money I pay for “entertainment” and now they’re dropping my FAVORITE channels……I might be dropping THEM soon and look for other opinions!!!!!!!!
DISGUSTED
PLEASE do your research! Everyone is so quick to blame Cablevision! Scripps is the bigger part of the problem. They are trying to make as much money as possible off of these “high rated networks”. When will it end? Every time a network becomes high rated they are going to demand more money from Cablevision? And every other subscriber for that fact? This is just the beginning. You go ahead and switch subscribers and complain when Scripps turns around and does it to them next. Call, email or write to Scripps. I have and have received some interesting and comical feedback.
take it that you work for cablevision…why doesn’t cablevision reduce our rates right now?
Interesting thought – Cablevision has always been out for cablevision and that is that – their movies are repeated over and over again for at least 4-6 months. Why is it that all the other carriers in the tri-state region were able to resolve their issues with foodnetwork and hgtv – interesting. People in my neighborhood now have options and we are looking!
try paying another providers regular price , then you will really be disgusted, you think your paying a lot now, wait till scripps get what the want, then every one else come out the woodworks, who next soapnet, fox, espn, etc.where does it end. the grass is not always greener on the other side , why is no upset with scripts, what if you go to you barber every week and he charges you $14 , one week he say, I very popular now , your haircut will now cost you $41, would you be upset with yourself for not paying the new price. p.s. scripps took off the chnls not cablevision, who is gouging who
PLEASE GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOU KNOW WHERE. I CALL IT AS I SEE IT A MONOPOLY
I have Direct Tv and Cablevision, it’s no difference on the other side of the fence, I researched this and found Scripps Networks is in Financial troubles, they charge Dish network 7.3mil to have those same channels and want to charge cablevision $20mil , I don’t know about you but there is something that as a customer here that just does not seem right. We have a company who wants to hurt another company , that’s whats going on and we have to be hurt by them
Just read your post useyourheadnotheart and I totally agree……
Its great to see that Cablevision is having people try and support their crappy methods by lying and posting on here. They tried this about 6 years ago with the Yankees, not playing the YES network for most of a season to try and hold the Yankees hostage because they wanted way too many pennies per subscriber. Food Network and HGTV are highly rated channels and Scripps deserves to be paid for the amount of households who watch their channels. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t watch Food Network at least once a day when there is nothing else on.
The facts are that Cablevision has more than enough money to pay Scripps. If they didn’t, then why does my rates increase every single year since I’ve been in their subscriber area (6 years now). They lie about pretty much everything and are really crappy to the subscribers. Case in point, they are getting rid of analog cable. I don’t have a cable box in every room, so having analog cable in rooms without a box was great because it was all the basic cable channels. Cablevision had it in their infinite wisdom to decide that everyone must buy/rent multiple cable boxes so every single tv in your home has one and if you don’t do that then the tv’s without the boxes are now useless. These guys love sucking the blood of the subscribers. I think its time all of us write to our Congress people about the ridiculous practices of Cablevision and how they love to bleed us white, while lying about their financial situation and claiming poverty when any network wants a few cents more per subscriber.
I suscribe to cablevision, and have had problems since day 1. Phone service sucks, and internet speed is not all that.
This situation is the last straw . I am not wining anymore, i simply will move on to FIOS. At least we can still have options, and not continue to be bullied by cablevisions greed and selfishness.Cablevision has already lost7000 costumers,I guess I will be 7001.
I couldn’t agree more! They weren’t “worried about their customers” when they decided to take certain channels away and make them only accessible via the box. AND without any prior notice. Perhaps, like the telephone companies, cable companies need to be able to be more competitive. Oh, wait a minute, we’ve all seen how competition in that area has benefitted us all… Maybe government intervention, oh, that may not work out too well either. Maybe I’ll just relax and let Bobby Flay tell me how everyone is working to fix this on every tv channel and radio station I get. I think the real resolution is going to be that based on the greed of these two companies, people will just be left to find other things to watch/do. I, for one, am catching up on my reading and not finding this so hard to deal with as time goes by…
Are you crazy????? You will pay per box with Dish network, verizon fios and all the rest. You obiously haven’t looked around! You can’t blame one company for something that standard in the industry and about the tv not working without the box… talk to you your government! People are talking about pears you are talking about oranges!
Just switch to Dish Network. I’ve had it since 2003 and LOVE IT!!! I have DVR in each room (4) in my house with HD in my bedroom and living room. They have all sorts of cool channels like HD theater and HD Net which has awesome programming. With all the channels for 4 rooms including hbo/skinemax, showtime it costs about $108/mo. Well worth it in my opinion. My mom has comcast and I can’t stand the way the menu and dvr work, terrible. DirecTV’s menu sucks too, but the HD is great too.
OMG, we have Cablevision and pay $120/mo and don’t have 1 premium station!!! It goes up every month – I put a ‘limit” on my checking acount pymt to them and it fails every so often b/c they’ve raised it again!! I don’t think that I can switch to Direct TV b/c we live in an apartment (wish we could, but there’s no place to put the unit outside), so we’ll switch to FIOS – at least it should work with my Tivo.
BTW, that was (yet another) problem with Cablevision – it took them 4 hours (2 guys on different days, no less) to get my HD Tivo working w/ their system – and the whole time they tried to tell me that their piece of garbage DVR was better. Then the guy told me that our basic box was hooked up wrong b/c I can’t get SciFi on it – and he switched it so that the Cable box was “in charge” and told me I had to put my Tivo on Channel 3, killing it’s functionality!!! I was furious and told him to go scratch and switched it back. He told me I can’t get it without that setup! WHAT AM I PAYING FOR WITH THE BOX? I can’t get SciFi and a few other stations. CABLEVISION SUCKS & THEY LIE!!! DUMPING THEM!!!
How about all of you people get your facts before making comments.I sat down did some research and found that SCRIPPS want a 600% increase.Currently they get .25 for both channels and they now want $1.76 you do the math!
There is a solution. Basic supply and demand. Drop the lowest rated channels and pay Scripts for the Food Network programs. I will be switching to FIOS tomorrow.
The best move you can make! Fios is so much better!
I’m on my way to FIOS!
And what do you think Scripps will don when their contract is up with Verizon???
If Cablevison just goes with this so will follow other networks in the higher prices.. we are the ones who end up paying!!
they are worth every penny of that 1.76 – the nerve of cable to only pay them .25 per subscriber when my bill is almost $200 per month and this is the channel i watch the most – fork it up dolan’s or you will be losing a lot of customers very soon!
I agree completely. And what are they doing to compensate for the loss of two channels?
Exactly what I was thinking. We haven’t been offered a discount.
Yeah, are you gonna lower my bill?…….not!
I agree, many years ago before Cablevision owned Madison Square Garden, they would not air the MSG channel because Cablevision though it should be a premium channel, all other cable operators had in their standard package. When I deducted a percentage of the bill for the lost channel they became incensed that I would withhold payment. When they bought MSG they made it a premium channel. For Cablevision it is all about the bucks!
my feeeling as well.we pay for the service and without a notice they cut what they provide. i want to be re-imbursed for the cutback of channels AND I’m switching to fios on monday the 4th. i wantto be reim
They need to compensate us for not having the food Network and HGTV very disappointed with this. Those are two of the bigger channels you cant just take them away and think people are going to be happy. I think we are going to change to FIOS or the dish too we are NOT HAPPY customers.
I would love to have these channels back as soon as possible but there are several items to address on this subject:
First is the 600% increase Scripps is seeking. Scripps has contracts with all operators Dish, Time Warner, FIOS, etc. Don’t you think Scripps will seek the same amount from each if they can get it from Cablevision? Multiply this by other programmers…Disney, Nickeloden,Cartoon,Turner Classic… you get the message. That is one of the reasons rates go up each year.
Second is the rebate of the current 25 cents per month subscriber. I am sure that if this goes on for a length of time that Cablevision will refund the less than penny a day per subscriber. I know a penny saved is a penny earned.
Third is that Scripps is in financial difficulities, just look at their bond ratings.
Next is lobbying the lawmakers, thats funny because they (the municipalities)have contracts with the cable companies for a percentage of revenue….imagine that!
Let Cablevision take on Scripps and see what happens, maybe the rates won’t go up as much as some complain,( Remember Scripps seeking a 600% increase) besides they sure woke up Verizon when they offered phone and internet service.
Sure Cablevision has had more than their share of mistakes in the past but I would like to give them a little time to see how this plays out. I am sure it is still going to cost more but hopefully within reason.
Tony, how do you feel about Cablevision now that ABC7 is in jeopardy on the night of the Academy Awards broadcast?! This is just greed run amok, and of course we the viewers won’t receive any rebate for the loss — just look at the fallout from their suspension of HGTV and Food Network, did any subscribers receive reductions in their monthly bills? I think not. I’m not a lawyer, but isn’t there some basis here for a class action suit against cablevision for failure to provide contracted subscriber services? I am definitely going to investigate another supplier like AT&T or DirecTV…this is so outrageous!
how many channels do you have if that paid every channel that price you bill would be $500
my feelings exactly.
I agree with this!!
“How about getting your facts straight?” is the line being used by the defenders of Cablevision on every thread on this topic.
This means
1) There’s one person out there who just feels a great passion for Cablevision and refuses to let these outrageous charges of greed sully their sterling reputation.
2) Cablevision has their employees on every site and has advised them to use that same lame line to set the smelly masses straight.
You might want to tell Mr. Dolan that he should advise his loyal minions to try using a different line to make your propaganda campaign a little less obvious.
wayyyyyyyy to go…my husband and i live for the foodnetwork..we are enraged and already talked about direct…fios…move…what the frock…..
Dolan and his minions? Lol why do you guys always get so “epic” about this? You act like dolan is sitting in the depths of hell wearing a crown and telling employees to do his “evil bidding” its hilarious and clearly obvious that some of you need to simply “GET A LIFE” I am a cablevision customer sure my stuff doesn’t work sometimes but I know that at least I can call these guys at 2am in the morning and they’ll still have someone work on it from there.
I think you guys are huge babies/ very ignorant anyone with sense can see that the math would cause rates to skyrocket.
Crying because of cable television. WOW some of you guys have ISSUES. If your entire LIFE revolve around two channels cablevision is not the problem YOU are. See a psychiatrist
Do U know if Cablevision will also be reducing its rates as aresult of this loss of service? This is not the first time that this has happened and no one ever gets a rebate. I know Mr. Dolan personally, and he is a wonderful man. This stuff did not happen when he ran the company.
This stuff didn’t happen when Dolan ran the company? What short term and selective memory. Dolan twice turned off MSG programming from loyal Knicks and Rangers fans before he decided that if he couldn’t coexist with MSG he would buy them.
Then after he owned MSG Network and he lost the Yankees to YES he decided to withhold YES from Cablevision subscribers.
what are you talking about it on chnl 70, 71, withold what, I confused , I watching it now
Yes network is not the same situation as the Scripps. Yes was a brand new channel with no contract. So they could not air the Yankees until a contract was reached. The Yes network wanted to be on the basic package (to make money) because they have every subscriber getting Yes. Then they can charge more money for comercials. This would cost every cable subscriber more money- which isn’t fair. Everyone isn’t a Yankee fan.
Scripps contact is up with Cablevision and the normal process is to keep the channels on the air while neegotiating. Scripps are the ones that pulled off the shows which isn’t normal process. I’m too young to comment on MSG- because I don’t remember or know the situation. All the other networks still have it because their contracts are not up for renewal. The contracts with each channel/company are done at different times and independant.
If the numbers are correct Dish is paying 7.3 million and they want Cablevision to pay 20 million just because they have the money that isn’t fair. I love food netowrk and HGTV. I miss it but I don’t want my rates to go up. If Cablevision pays, they will do the same when the other contracts renew. Leaving Cablevision is only a quick fix as I’m sure they will do the same at Verizon, Dish, and Direct TV.
Also the Yes situation- I had dish network and they didn’t get Yes either. So Dish might do the same if Scripps demands a big increase at renewal time.
So really- to me Scripps is the bad guy and if they get there way- everyone will eventually pay more. Scripps will do the same to everyone and maybe everychannel will do the same. They should get a fare rate and I’m not qualified to say what that is.
What do the other channels get?
Do we really care the point is…we lost a couple of channels and I want a refund…I am not getting what I paid for!!!
Please sit there and count every channel you get and see a picture and every on demand option and then devide that amount by the Tv price you paY– what do you get!!//LAZY?
I watch 3 types of TV – Sports, Cooking, Home Improvement. Please bridge the gap between Scripps and Cablevision and bring back these hugely popular channels. Was hoping to cure my New Year’s hangover by sipping bloody marys all weekend in front of HGTV, Food Tv and Hoops/Football.
A bit more research into this issue may reveal a deeper issue. Currently, network tv gets .50 where Scripps gets .12 per channel. FoodTV and HGTV have a greater viewing audience, and more customer loyalty than just about any Network TV station. Lastly, if the average cable bill is north of $100 per month (JUST cable, not including the bundling), why is one of your largest revenue producers receiving programming fees that amounts to pennies???
I agree with the person who said to decrease the cable to basic for two months and see what Cablevision does. That’s what I’m going to do right now. PUT SCRIPPS BACK ON!!!
I couldn’t agree more. It is nothing but greed on the Dolans’ part. Their posts about Scripps having financial woes in the guise of readers reactions are laughable. Cablevision needs to negotiate an agreement now. Viewers have had it with their 1990 technology and waiting for slow responses everytime they access the channel guide or On Demand Menu. Instead of pursuing small business subscribers for phone and internet services, concentrate on your core business and provide decent programming that satisfies customers’ needs. I cannot install a dish in my building due to homeowners’ association rules however, Fios will be in my neighborhood soon and as soon as it arrives, I’m history with Cablevision. Bing back HGTV and the Food Network now! It is at least 60% of what my wife and I watch.
I am in the same boat. In a condo & no dishes allowed on roofs or siding AND no FiOS any time soon! Cablevision really has a monopoly in Southern Monmouth County, NJ. I would like to be able to CHOOSE a cable provider. Let there be some competition among Cablevision, Time-Warner and Comcast! I have contacted my Congressman and, in the past, contacted the FCC who did respond with the answer that “for business purposes” cable companies are allowed to make certain decisions regarding programming.
Cable Vision if you don’t renew your contract with HGTV and the Food Network I will have no choice but to terminate with you and move on to a carrier that can provide me with these changnels. How do you plan to compensate me for not having these channels for three days?
I will do the math, thank you, although I am somewhat surprised that negotiation positions are so readily available for the casual researcher. I would b happy to pay the difference. By the way, how does the $1.76 (if that is, in fact, the number) compare to other content license fees being charged? Food Network provides quality content and they should be paid for it. Of course, perhaps the real answer here is to have the government step in and ban the “packaging” of channels by the cable companies. let us, the customers choose what we want to watch and pay for it accordingly. Yes, in the end some marginal content providers will be forced out, but those that are left will be competing to provide better content a a fair price. Luckily, the days of the cable carrier monopoly is about to expire. If Cablevision does not start thinking about the consumer, I will quickly make a switch.
And why shouldn’t Scripps get an increase when Cablevision charges us consumers so much to view HGTV & Food Network … two of the best channels provided. Frankly with all we pay for cable what’s another $1.50 increase to consumers … they usually pass these things along anyway and I’d rather pay the $1.50 than lose HGTV & Food Network. If Cablevision really wanted to keep Scripps they would have just upped our monthly fees … what’s the real reason Scripps’ channels were dropped??
Frankly, with the popularity of the channel(s), it doesn’t surprise me that Scripps wants an increase. In my opinion, I pay over $200/mo for my cable service. Multiply that times the number of subscribers in the Tri State Area and I don’t have a lot of sympathy for Cablevision. They are responsible for providing our service and owe it to their subscribers to do so.
As per previos comments- the amount cablevision gets – the can afford the increas too – they just raised our rates!! I also suggest we start calling our local elected governing bodies that cut the deal with Cablevision- I am sure that Comcast/TimeWarner would be happy to take over the areas covered by Cablevision-
Originally I thought this increase was outragous, but if you consider how the popularity of these shows increased over the last few years, they certainly command a much higher price. I would rather my $2.00 increase go to Foodnetwork & HGTV than the new religious channels, or the new foreign channels, or Dolan’s pocket for more of nothing. Fortunately, Cablevision no longer has a monopoly on Long Island, FIOS is going to have a field day with this. I think Cablevision just “jumped the shark”
where are your numbers from? i haven’t seen this anywhere
I agree!
We are trying to find an acceptable alternative to the over priced, inferior service, and arrogant posture of this company. I am planning to file a complaint with the FCC regarding the way we have been treated by this company. Our television “pixelates” everyday. We have had countless technicians intruding into our home trying to fix this issue. All of them have said that unless the problem happens in their presence, they will not be able to diagnose or fix it. The technicians have all said that the likely reason is too many homes on one pole and that cablevision needs to upgrade the supply to our neighborhood. Cablevision of course denies this as the problem. It is funny how they are able to close out my repair tickets without asking us if the problem has been resolved.
I think that this company is another example of how honest tax paying citizens are being railroaded into bad deals. Cablevision knows that they have a Monopoly in our area and that the only choice we have is no cable or the poor service they offer.
I am an extremely frustrated, tax paying, hard working consumer that feels this company should be brought up on charges for false statements in that “Scripps’ current financial difficulties” is a lie. They are trying to keep customers by blaming Scripps, that is FRAUD! I bet money that Scripps is standing up and fighting back. Where is the FCC to address these lies that they are broadcasting on their cable and telephone and customer service lines! The truth is, Scripps should be applauded for standing firm against this arrogant monolythic company that mirrors big government with their disdain.
There is a better way. It’s called the Internet.
I do not have cable or satellite. I refuse to pay $100 a month (in LA) for hundreds of crappy channels I do not want or need.
I choose what I watch when I want to watch it. I subscribe to Netflix to stream movies (I do believe artists/producers should be paid for their work). There are so many viable alternatives on the Internet.
Why in the hell would anyone pay for cable?
Um, perhaps because (a) that’s the best Internet connection available to us, and (b) our TV is not Internet-equipped and our monitor is too small for reasonable viewing?
Also because of my personal TV behavior where I usually surf on my laptop and have FoodNetwork on in the background on my TV. It’s difficult to do both on my laptop. As far as I can see all the other cable providers still have FoodNetwork so they must have figured out a deal, why can’t Cablevision?
you forgot that they pay off the FCC so this will go under a rug someware , but yes very nicely put none the less
Hello Dish Network – Goodbye Cablevision!
Ask for a $1 per channel refund… let’s band together and demand a reduction of $2 from our cable bills.
No way!
I want all those cable channels and more! They should take away nothing! How can you say that?
Cablevision doesn’t issue contracts. You can cancel at any time free of charge.
you must work for them
i am canceling cablevision due to the BS. The only three programs i watch are hbo, hgtv and the food network. now cablevision has shut off hgtv and foodnetwork due to scripps not cooperating. i dont believe this. iim paying 125 a month for what? im going to fios. they have great deals and at least the channels i want!
Hey Yankee fans – don’t forget about 2002 when Cablevision refused to carry the YES network. No Yankee games unless there were on FOX on the weekends.
This unacceptable and I will be changing cable companies if these 2 channels do not come back.
Agree whole heartedly. These are the only two channels I love.
I am switching to FIOS this week. Enough of Cablevision.
I AGREE!!!!!
I am very upset they dropped food network!or i should say scripps dropped it off cablevision
Typical Cablevision B.S. I live in Torrington, Ct. half of the time you are watching a program the signal stops and starts many times… They will also not carry NFL Network because Dolan has a beef with the NFL… I am sick of this and as soon as spring is here its Direct TV, and good by Cablevision!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cablevision needs to get HGTV and FoodNetwork back or subscribers will leave. They already charge high fees PER BOX, so not all the TVs get the channels I pay for anyway. I am looking at my options, this is the last straw.
DISH or FIOS, I’m ready – sorry to the Dolan’s
I am also very upset. No Food Network or HGTV. I will be exploring other alternatives. My cablevision rates have increased and I have less content. THIS IS THE LAST STRAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have got to be kidding! Scripps is holding Cablevision hostage. Everybody bellyaches over $4 gas and says how the oil companies are gouging customers. Isn’t that what Scripps is doing? Cablevision will just pass the fees along to us whether we watch Food Network or not. If Cablevision caves in, don’t you think Scripps will do the same thing to FIOS, Time Warner, Comcast, etc. Scripps is nothing but a bunch of greedy SOBs….and I love Food Network!
wow, someone is actually making funking sense
If you change providers, don’t you think the same thing will happen when Scripps contract runs out with them? You will be back to this point. Scripps made these channels and gambled they would become popular. Based on that gamble, they made MILLIONS selling cookbooks, cookware, new restruants opened in new cities for the “hosts”, BAM became a new word, etc… They CHOSE and accepted the terms at the time. They won the gamble and now they want a 600% increase. (FOX did not become the “4th Network” before cable; do you see a pattern here?)
Are they in a position to get an increase, YES. 600%, NO.
There is enough greed to go around here on both sides, and both sides are using us, the consumer, to fight thier battle (no Iron Chef pun intended)for them. Both sides have no balls!
Cablevision in New York has a reputation for their arrogance. This is not the first time they have eliminated channels due to one reason or another. Now they will offer a “new tier” of service with a different group of channels for more money. I am in Montauk NY and am GM of a major luxury resort. We currently carry Cablevision in our 92 units. I cannot wait for the day when I call them and say “come get your equipment, I am changing this resort and my home to FIOS!”
I live in an area of NJ where Cablevision is a monopoly.
Their arrogance and high monthly charges is based on lack of competition. Food Network is very important to my family, and if this is not fixed soon I am seriously looking at other providers.
What a crappy way to do business!
Which is it? Does Cablevision have a monopoly or are there other providers? Do you know what monopoly is? Ever heard of an oligopoly?
While unfortunate that both cablevision and scripps can’t come to reasonable terms to satisfy their customers it’s very unlikely that we the consumer will receive any satisfaction from either party in this.
So what are our actual options?
1) an email campaign? We could all collectively write both scripps and cablevision and voice out outrage, but I fear it will fall on ear deafened by the sounds of falling profits. Cablevision has a long track record of doing everythign for the company and the hell with the customer, and Scripps won’t listen they’ll get their money one way or another. (Read to the end to see the logic behind that statement.)
2)Change our carrier and cancel our cablevision account: Face it, if we all collectively cancel (or at least threatento cancel) our cablevision accounts in outrage and force cablevision to meet scripps new price and reinstate the programming we want who wins? Who will eat this increased cost scripps wants for it’s programming. Cablevision at first, but then the consumer as cablevision raises rates or cut included products (so they can charge for them,) to compensate for a changed profit margin. And what if we do cancel our cablevision account and go elsewhere? How does that effect Scripps at all? All we will be doing rerouting the money Scripps will get. So by changing our carrier it will go to them not through cablevision per subscriber, they’ll get it per subscriber from the wave of ex-cablevision customers going to FIOS or Dish, or whatever other provider we join.
3) cancel all premium service. Cancel cable, or fios, or dish so that we hit them where it hurts. fewer subscribers and they get less money. Period. But themn who looses there. them, and us. They loose money, and we loose the extertainment that we love.
It angers me that no matter what we are at the mercy of people who will not listen to us, and if they do we have to pay more becasue of their greed. Anyone have any better options, I for one would love to hear them.
You would think that these networks would be getting plenty of advertising support from food and building material companies. After all, it’s these channels that encourage and inspire us to go forth and purchase items to enhance our lives. Perhaps Scripps needs to have a better marketing team.
Cablevision is the worst cable provider! I’m going back to DirectTV.
Cablevision service just gets worse and worse. We have not ever been able to get the NFL Network and now these 2 great networks are gone. Shame on Cablevision. Think I will go elsewhere – Fios, Dish …
First they force you to rent cable boxes to view programs you have been watching for years. Now they drop chanels altogether. What are we paying for? There is no competition only a pure monoploy which is for all purposes totaly unregulated. There is no free market at work here.
You don’t have a contract, you’re not on Fios.
i am So beyond upset! i watch pretty much only food network and HGTV! now i cant watch ace of cakes, diners drive ins, and dives, food network challenge, design on a dime….. the lit goes on and on. i will DEFINITELY switch if this is not figured out soon
Absolutely agree!!! Have you called to register a complaint? Just got off the phone with them but doubt they much care.
am prepared to go direct tv like we did when they didn’t take on the yes network
I am with other posters here, these channels are more than just random cable channels that got cut off. HGTV and Food Network in fact are the only two basic cable channels I watch.
Everyone knew the day was coming when the content providers were going to ask for more money. DVR’s are readily available, and have made it hard for advertisers to justify paying what they use to.
If Cablevision can’t step up to the plate and move with the times, like the other providers, this will be more than enough reason to change. My packages add up to $185 / mo, and I will gladly take my business elsewhere.
I don’t blame Scripps, I blame Cablevision.
I am extremely angry and disappointed in these tactics and the pulling of
some of my favorite channels. This has happened before and will continue
since we are stuck with a monopoly (other than satellite dishes). Both companies should come up to the plate and do their best to fix this situation
IMMEDIATELY. These are difficult times that we are living in and we all need programs live HGTV and the Food Network to give us some relaxation, downtime and pleasure. Life is no longer so predictable–wars, terrorism, a down economy, but having these channels helps our spirits. Please give them back.
there is no loyalty anymore….just business!
I can and will switch to Fios if this is not resolved soon!
CABLEVISION HAD PREVIOUSLY OWNED BANKRUPT NOBODY BEATS THE WIZ ELECTRONICS STORE AND RAN IT INTO THE GROUND. THEY CURRENTLY OWN LONG ISLAND NEWSDAY AND DOUBLE THE PRICE 50 CENTS TO $1.00 A DAY…… WHICH RUMORS THEY SOON WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STAY IN BUSINESS BECAUSE CUSUMERS JUST CAN’T PAY CARTEBLANCHE…… CABLEVISON ALSO OWNS RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL AND WANTED TO REPLACE THE ROCKETTES WITH HALF THE PAY NON UNION WORKERS…..CABLEVISION WOULDN’T ALLOW NEWSDAY TO ADVERTISE FIOS IN THEIR NEWSDAY NEWSPAPER….. IMAGINE THAT A COMPETITIOR THAT COULD ADD TO THE PAPER REVENUES BUT INSTEAD NEWSDAY DOUBLES THE RATE OF THE PRICE OF PAPER…..WOW…. DOLANS HAVN’T PROVEN THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE NOR LOYAL TO THE PUBLIC AND I HOPE FIOS NEGOTIAGES A LONG TERM FAIR AND ECONOMIC CONTRACT LONG TERM SO PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO ENJOY THESE TWO CHANNELS.
Instead of watching cartoon’s, I sit down and watch my favourite shows on HGTV! I think it is the best show on TV!!
Cablevision should be boycotted and investigated. They overcharge
for everything from the— remote up to and including the boxes.
Their movies suck. They charge for movies as old as Overboard …
and now they drop 2 of the best programs they actually had. (foodnetwork and HGTV) My bill keeps going up and I am getting nothing for all of this money. But because they are the only
cable network allowed to have CABLE in Coop City (Bronx). We are Stuck with them. Both Riverbay and Cablevision should be brought up on charges … something smells up here.
I want both programs back. AND some other cable company to use up here. I am sick with cablevison. and feel totally HELPLESS. I want my money back.
Forget cancelling for a month. Lets cancel for good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im not surprised , this is not the first or the last time cablevision did this. they have too much controll. why dont the gov. get involve with cablevisions shenanagans like they did with everything else. they got u by the balls as long as they can get away with it. watch out , in 6 months theyll take away some more channels mark my words . if it has to do with money, , greed, your a hostage.
It’s not cablevision folks… it’s scripps! They usually allow the channel to keep showing even thought they are in dispute. Scripps wouldn’t let them!! They are doing this.. not cable.
Hey Karen Priest, its nice to see that you are employed by Cablevision because only an employee of theirs would write this nonsense. Every time Cablevision has had a dispute with a channel they pull it, PERIOD! They always have and always will.
Good for Cablevision making a stand for it’s customers. Food network want to charge more and Cable will have no choice but to pass on the increase cost to it’s customers. See the picture now.
Wow, look at all you meatheads bashing cablevision. Go switch to Verizon (the evilist corporation on the planet) and really start beeching… Im always astounded by how retarded the common person is nowadays.
Iagree, monopolies suck, PLEASE someone create a FACEBOOK titled JOIN GROUP ANYONE WHO LEFT CABLEVISION FOR FIOS OR DIRECT TV!
Do you honestly think its fair for Scripps to demand an increase from .25 to 1.76- Like the YES network that is PER SUBSCRIBER, whether you watch it or want it or not, so of course it will have to be passed on to the subscribers- what do u do if u are the cable company- agree to pay it, increase rates and lose even more customers… not to mention every network that starts to do well will want more, the existing ones will want even more once they see the others being increased and soon you will be watching public broadcast… but of course you probably don’t look at the big picture, only what’s important to you- and NO i don’t work for the cable oompany and have no great love for them but i do understand the economics of it…
Cablevision just increased their monthly rates to it’s loysl customers. I think they could have fought harder to keep these two favorite channels on their lineup. No wonder people are switching to The Dish. Cablevision–where’s your loyalty to your customers?
Howabout looking at the facts? Cablevision’s rates go up because of situations like this where it’s a constant fight with networks to keep their channels on the air. All channels are suffering loss of revenue because of declining advertisements and sites like Hulu.com. This trickles down to the provider airing these channels and some of the cost is given to the customer.
Network televion is losing advertising revenue due to Cable TV. We are in danger of losing public TV. Contract negotiations are a critical part of the Cable system. Perhaps they need people who can do the job better. Has anyone looked at the numbers regarding household shares watching these channels? After having to “rent” boxes (more money for Cablevion) to watch the channels already in my selected package, this simply adds insult to injury.
CableVision (and Time Warner, and just about every cable carrier) fees increase because they can. They ran (until the advent of FiOS) as little fifedoms, with absolutely no competition in their viewing area, and as such could increase rates as they pleased, based on geographic location and the level of cost that could be absorbed by the customer. This was done because there was no alternative. FiOs may not be perfect, but it at least offers another alternative.
what’s wrong with FIOS?
Actually, there are plenty of options..satelite tv has been around quite awhile, and yet they could not keep their customers. The bottom line here is competition is good. But quality is also important….All companies have raised their prices… and by the way Fios will get you way worse than any of the other options. Just food for thought people…
YOU (Cable Shill) should get your facts straight, Hulu is owned by the networks who supply the programming for it. If they were losing revenue they’d stop offering it. Nice try.
I fully agree – have been loyal Cablevision customer for over 10 years and they constantly raise rates and we get less for it! Food Network and HGTV are our 2 favorite channels especially on the weekends. They deserve the price that they are asking. Cablevision will pay dearly if everyone starts cancelling because of this. I know I will drop them if they don’t bring back these channels.
Nice concept just interrupt what we subscribers who pay for Cablevision and Scripps. So are we getting a rebate? How much do we get back? Wish if we did not want pay for heat, or gas or train ticket we could just say its to expensive and pull it and not lose our house, our jobs or cars or anything else. Who made Cablevision king.? Honestly they are the most greedy and stupid company in the country. They buy a useless paper, pay a multi million verdict because their obstinate CEO is an idiot. Now it is we subscribers who get the shaft. Nice work. How do I get a job like that?
Cablevision will loose subscribers. They losing me and hopefully many other will do the same
I am so sick and tired of your company this year was the toughest time for everyone. People lost there jobs had there hours were cut and all your company has done; was raise are rates and take channels away. It makes no scense.HOWS ABOUT once and a while you give something to your customers without looking for more money you greedy basters. yours truly unhappy customer.
I WILL HAVE TO CUT MY SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES AGAIN
TIME TO PAY FOR ONLY THE CHANNELS YOU WATCH…HGTV WAS ONE ON THEM
THE CABLE INDUSTRY AND ITS PROVIDERS NEED DRASTIC OVERSIGHT
THEY HAVE GOTTEN TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL…IT ALL COMES DOWN TO MONEY…AND THE PUBLIC IS THE LOSER EVERY TIME.
were going to swich to direct tv.
…sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnn
I’m at the point where I will learn to live without the channels. I enjoyed both but hey I’m not in the business of making everyone else a millionaire.
Thank goodness HGTV was on last night…it woke me for the new year.
We have resisted switching from Cable to Dish or uverse. Mostly because my TIVO won’t work with them. But after this I guess I will have to dump Cablevision.
Tivo won’t work with Fios or Direct TV?
I want hdtv and food network back
Hey come on — I love Food Network and HGTV. I watch those two channels the most. GET THEM BACK!
These are two major chanels I really became a junkie about. I can`t imagine to pay Cable Vision without Hgtv.
I am DROPING Cable Vision like hot roll ! What a shame !
Who carries the shows now (DirectTV, FIO’s)? I need peace in my house.
Here we go again, the consumer gets screwed!! Scripps and Cablevision should go back to the drawing board and settle this thing. I know we have wanted FIOS for a very long time. Now that the cables have been installed in our neighborhood we will be changing. I hope they carry Food Network and HGTV! My son lives in the city add has Time Warner, I guess no football for him this weekend! Greedy, greedy, greedy!!!
I’m furious. I pay almost $200 a month for what???? Just got an increase. I love those channels and addicted to FN. All the channels we pay for and they
mostly crap!!!I want my monthly charge reduced. Get rid of the Spanish and Chinese stations I don’t need. You blame Scripps both you
are both to blame. Thanks for nothing. You treat your customers like dirt. We should all stick together and cancel.
Natalie you are an idiot!!!! Why dont you get rid of yourself..how dare you say to take off the spanish channel you ignorant baffoon!
I agree with Natalie – I don’t like paying for numerous Spanish channels either. they should be an option for those who aren’t fluent or don’t wish to be fluent in ENGLISH! If we chose to live in another country where English wasn’t the major language spoken would their cable companies make English speaking channels a “Must Have” in the packages?
Cablevision only cares about the money going into their pocket. Why did this happen so quickly? Why is it my cable bill went up $4 and I LOST channels. Only in New York!
It’s time for a la carte viewing – I only want to pay for what I watch. Who cares about News 12 they only care about Suffolk county anyway? Last I knew Long Island should include Nassau. Queens and Brooklyn are considered part of the city.
Natalie is Right. Who needs that stuff.
I agree. I have a ton of Spanish channels that I could give a crap about.
Spanish channels are a specialty.
A minority watches them.
Make the minority pay.
I agree with Natalie. Cablevision charges extra for Russian, Jewish, Indian and other ethnic programming. Spanish should be premium as well. This would free up resources to return the Food channels and add better programming.
We are the minority now!
well what more can be said. SPREAD THE WORD DUMP CABLEVISION. What’s next ? I’m going to Dish network so what if I don’t get news 12, I get hgtv and food network certainly worth the trade off.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH- HIGHER Rates, less channels, etc.
DUMP CABLEVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you said it clearly, wht a slap in the face, and they didnt let us know until about 2 hrs before the deadline….
get FIOS !!!!!!
These 2 chanels are some of the reasons i pay for cablevision i expect a decient reduction in my bill.Maybe the govt shold step in and take back control of these two rampant companies after all theyare a monopoly
CABLEVISION I AM SICK AND TIRED OF YOU ALL YOU DO IS KEEP MAKING RATES HIGHER AND HAVE BAD NETWORK CONNECTION. I hope you are happy with what you have done. There are a lot of specials on SUCH AS THE ROSE PARADE. And now I have to watch some bad reality show instead of IRON CHEF AMERICA… Thank you, good night.
P.S. I hope you know you are about to lose millions of viewer, you egotistical cablevision…
This was exactly why I switched over to FIOS. Sure, Verizon isn’t a lot better, but dealing with this Cablevision company was completely a waste of my time. I hope subscribers let their feet do the talking…this is the only thing this poorly managed business might understand.
I am so, extremely pissed off that they just pulled those channels without any warning. I love foodnetwork, it is practically the only channel my mother and I watch on television (and that is not an exaggeration). After all the hype about the new shows starting in January and being all excited to watch them, they just pull the whole network without warning. Come on, we pay for cable so we can watch foodnetwork. Drop half of the other crap, but leave my foodnetwork!
I just discontinued cablevision.
It’s the normal “Mexican stand off” between those who had the monopoly and have built out their networks and those who produce what passes for entertainment. We went through this when the Yankees wanted CableVision to carry ancient games and pay for them for 99% of the year. CableVision caved and the non-Yankee watchers had to suffer the loss of programs then to pay for 24 hours of pinstripes.
Although the Dolans have gotten Bill Gates wealthy from the cable franchise, they have reinvested a lot to provide a combo Internet / Entertainment service that consistently wins the quality prize. And although my wife is going through withdrawal, the “formula” shows that Scripps produces should not be tough to duplicate — There seems to be no patent, for example on the “house hunters” mold where a couple is filmed walking through (exactly) three dwellings and after the last commercial break the exact words come, “And the place we chose was [pause] [pause] Number [1,2 or 3]. Or my favorite of amateur acting where the target is led into a total hot pink ruination of a room in their house followed by a shrieked “I love it! Amazing”.
But if I were nose to nose with CableVision, I would instantly cut a deal with whatever competition exists in the Tri-State area for cut rate prices, because there are fanatical viewers who would rather FIOS or Dish than lose their formula programs.
Cablevision should value the customers that they have-only new “pastys” get the low rates-Not Fair! and when I called and complained-after I told them that my building was JUST wired for Verizon-SURPRISE-they gave me a few more dollars off my bill-but of course, I will have to pay the new increase-???WHAT IS THE INCREASE FOR???-CABLEVISION IS NOT ADDING PROGRAMING-THEY ARE TAKING IT AWAY-I agree with others-although I would prefer to have the 2 channels-frankly-the best of their offerings-I think WE should get a rebate!
I am so truly upset with Cablevision. Not only did they take about 14 channels away from my plan over the summer, and didn’t decrease my monthly bill, now they can’t negotiate with the 2 channels that I watch, along with a vast number of other people. I was very much looking forward to all the new shows starting at 9pm tonight. If that doesn’t happen, tomorrow I will spend the morning, moving my subscription to another company, especially after reading the Cablevision “hardball statement” above.
I will give Cablevision the benefit of the doubt till I hear Scripts side of the story, but till then, and if I never do, I see Cablevision as a greedy and uncaring company.
Want to see my shows tonight !!!!!
If Cablevision does not restore these two channels, I will be dropping them and will go to Fios. I think they have horrible service anyway and they just increased my bill a few dollars a month. I watch HGTV and Foodnetwork a lot and will not do without these when I can get them somewhere else. I am giving this situation a few days to resolve and if it doesn’t, Cablevision will be gone!
I can’t believe that Cablevision has such a stronghold over our TV viewing. I wish we could choose cable companies like we can choose cell phone carriers. I am not a fan of dish TV and FIOS is not available in my area yet.
I bet if this involved a sports or news channel, they would have fought a harder fight to keep it on. It seems like those are the only venues Cablevision has an interest in as you can tell by the overload of those channel options. You didn’t see any other home or food shows offered on CATV.
They are robbing the public with their outrageous costs.
New Year’s Resolution – find another cable provider.
I hate those bastards at CableVision. I have had countless screwups with my bil and their customer service is a failure. I will spend time looking at how much TheDish will cost me. But I still need internet service….I don’t know who else services South Brooklyn, I’m in Midwood. Anyway, fck you CableVision!!! I will get someone else who provides a full channel lineup.
So, I assume we will be pro-rated on our billing for the lack of programming for the time period that these channels are out??? I heard for weeks about Fox being pulled, but this was a surprise.
I REALLY LOVE AND ENJOY THE SHOWS. YOU WILL LOOSE ALOT OF CUSTOMERS…PLEASE BRNG IT BACK……..
