Cablevision vs Scripps Fight Over Food Network/HGTV Could Last Weeks Longer
UPDATE: Cablevision just gave me this hardball statement:
“We are sorry that Scripps’ current financial difficulties are making it impossible for them to continue our relationship on terms that are reasonable for Cablevision and our customers. We wish Scripps well and have no expectation of carrying their programming again, given the dramatic changes in their approach to working with distributors to reach television viewers.”
Scripps Networks Interactive made good on its threat from yesterday because of its war with Cablevision over programming fees. About 3 million subscribers are affected. Both channels have some special Sunday night programming scheduled, including an Iron Chef episode featuring ingredients from Michelle Obama’s White House vegetable garden, so I suspect there’ll be a surrender before then.

Time to boycott Cablevision and time to lobby your lawmakers to have the option of choosing your channels individually!!!
The airwaves are publicly owned but Congress has basically given that ownership away without our knowledge.
TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!!
I’m leaving Cablevision if they don’t get HGTV and Food network back soon. I’ve already called DishTV this morning and will be calling FIOS on Mon am. Sick of paying more for less service. And yes, I will pay less for more when I switch.
I agree, we need some oversight in this area.
I am switching to dish too. This is Ridiculous!!!
Make sure we tell the cancellation dept that we are cancelling the subscription because of this specifically..so they understand why they are loosing customers
Happy New Year!! What away to start. Once again consumers are get the shaft. Cablevision can gladly take away some of the other garbage they provide (most of which you cannot watch with your family) and give us back good quality programming that we can watch with our kids!!!
Food Network and HGTV are two of the most watched channels. I watch them all the time! Cablevision, get your crap together. It’s your job to provide the service we pay for. In my opinion, it’s not worth having cable for the other channels. They don’t show anything worth watching most of the time anyway, unlike Food Network or HGTV which are consistent. I miss you Food Network! Work it out! Come Back!!!!
I am so sick and tired of paying for cable and you take away everything. I watch hgtv and food network everyday, now thats gone. All We the customer gets to see is paid advertising, I can’t believe Cable has stuck it to the customer once again.Theres nothing on. I understand trying to make a profit but not on the backs of your customers. Cable must bring back HGTV and FOODNETWORK and finally do the right thing for the customer. People are having it tough, give the little guy a break and stop blaming Scripps for not coming to the terms, you did not agree too.
I am looking at Direct TV as FIOS does not have internet service to this area yet. May have to change my TV to one of the other companies and stay with Optimum for internet for the near future and then quit Optimum completely at a later date. Just have to see.
Optimum has the WORST system I have had (4 total so far across the US). The system is clunky and SLOW.
you’re all complaining about Cablevision but what about Scripps, who knows what their demands were to Cablevision for keeping their programing on their cable. Fox is doing the same thing to Time Warner, I think these television networks such as Fox and Scripps need to realize they’ll be losing viewers, viewers who view their advertising that pays for them to run, by pulling their programing off of these Cable Providers. Screw Scripps for being so greedy!
Actually I went to HGTV’s website and read some of the facts and one stated that the amount that the customers felt that Scripps should receive for progamming is $0.73, which is a considerable amount higher than what Cablevison is paying and more than what they are asking for…..73 F*CKING CENTS!!!!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS WHEN THE BILLS ARE ON THE UPWARDS OF $200 OR MORE! This is a shame! I LOVE HGTV and watched it everyday and now it’s gone just out of the blue! Now I had heard about the Fox situation but that’s with Time Warner cable(which I used to have in NC), but had no idea about the Scripps situation with Cable Vision…This is bullsh*t! I hate CableVison!
I am really disappointed with this decision. I really enjoyed Food Network, especially during the holiday season. I am an avid baseball fan during the Spring and Summer, however, after the World Series, the Food Network was practically the only network I looked forward to. I will miss Paula, Giada, Rachel, Guy, Tyler, they all felt like family.
I am not watching boring PBS, or any other food show!
THANKS GUYS!!!!
Sorry Cablevision but you are wrong. You charge an enormous amount of money and take away channels? Your decision to move analog to digital channels was just a greedy way to force people to ‘rent’ your stupid boxes.
Since you lost these two channels, are you reducing your rates? Somehow I doubt it.
Half of what we watch in my house is on HGTV.
Now it’s gone from CableVision.
Are they going to lower my bill one dime?
NO!
That’s the final nail in the coffin.
Although Verizon has amongst the worst customer service, I am switching.
I’d rather have lousy service than no service.
Wake up, CableVision!
Try thinking about the customers rather than how much more you can raise our bills.
Good riddance!
P.S. – We’re all still waiting for ala carte programming so we pay for what we watch.
Not for what you throw into an overpriced (and mostly unwanted) package!
cablevision is a greedy blood sucking monopoly!!!!! iam downgrading my cable to the the basic channels and cancelling my phone today. i will use my cell and the internet to get the shows i want for free F*@k you cablvision long island!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was shocked that my favorite channel was taken off the air. I look forward to Paula, Ina, Guy and all the rest of them. It is totally ridiculous that Cablevision blames Scripps for the problem when they are the ones having financial difficulties.
I pay alot of money every month to have the programming I want–if Foodnetwork doesn’t get back on I’ll have to change providers.
Sad when money is more important to Cablevision than keeping its loyal customers. There are plenty of other providers out there who would be more than happy to take my money!!
DID SOMEONE SAY LOYALTY????? LETS LOOK AT CABLEVISION WERE THEY LOYAL TO THE WIZ APPLIANCE CHAIN WHEN THEY DECLARED BANKRUPT? ARE THEY CURRENT LOYAL TO THE WORKERS AT NEWSDAY WHEN THEY RAISED THE PAPER TO $1.00 WHEN OTHERS CHARGE .50CENTS AND ITS A MATTER OF TIME NEWSDAY IS NOT SELLING AND MOST EXPECT IT TO GO BELLY UP LIKE THE WIZ? WAS CABLVISION LOYAL TO THE ROCKETTES AT RADIO CITY WHEN THEY TOLD THEM THEY WOULD HIRE REPLACEMENTS AT HALF THE PRICE? CABLEVISON LOYAL? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????? DO PEOPLE KNOW NEWSDAY WHICH IS CABLEVISON PARENT COMPANY WOULD NOT TAKE VERIZON FIOS ADVERTISIMENT IN THEIR PAPER BECAUSE THEY FELT THREATENED….. WHAT’S WITH THE DOLAN’S HOLD ON WHERE TIME WARNER WANTED TO BUY THEM OUT????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME CABLEVISION????
SCRIPTS SHOULD PUBLISH AN ETHICAL OATH OR A FAIR AND HONEST SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENT THAT THEY WILL MOVE ON FROM CABLEVISION AND NEGOTIATE A LONG TERM COMMITMENT WITH FIOS TO BE PARTNERS WITH CUSTOMERS LOOKING FOR A LOYAL COST SAVING SERVICE AND SECURITY TO CARRY HGTV AND FOOD NETWORK…. CUSTOMERS NEED LOYAL SERVICE AND LONG TERM COMMITMENT FROM PEOPLE WHO WANT THEM AS CUSTOMERS UNLIKE CABLEVISION.
Does anyone know how much money is involved?
That quote from Cablevision sounds like their typical strong arm B.S. They likely had Food Network and HGTV on their steepest carrier fee from way back before either channel had a leg to stand on. I’ll dump Cablevision to get my Iron Chef!
As usual the consumer gets it in the neck. As soon as it is possible I will leave Cablevision. They are a greedy company who cares nothing for their customers. They can go to hell for all I care. Fios will reap the benefits of Cablevison’s greed.
I’m going to cancel my subscription. Cablevision keeps increasing their rates and keep taking away more and more channels. I’ll be looking for better service from someone else. Very disappointed!!
Last year with Voom network being canceled, I lost my favorite channels, being Rush HD and Equator HD, now my wife has lost hers, being Food and Home Garden. What the hell are we paying for anymore. I will certainly be looking for other options at this point. I quit cable before and went to dish. Only came back for the option of combining tv, phone and internet.. But hey, we still have News 12 (sic)
I will be switching from Cablevision to Verizon Fios. This is not the first time that Cablevision’s customers were affected by their inability to negotiate contracts. I missed out on a whole baseball season when they wouldn’t carry the Yes network. I mostly watch HGTV and the Food Network. That means my rates go up this month, and the two channels that I watch the most won’t be available. Why would I stay with Cablevision? They’re blaming the Scripps network, but their history with the Yes network speaks to their greed when negotiating contracts. Way to go Dolans. When you try to drop Cablevision, they tout their triple play card member benefits that get you into Clearview movies free on Tuesday nights. The three times that we tried to go to a free movie, it was sold out. Goodbye Cablevision.
You guys don’t get it, didn’t you just see what happened with Fox and Time Warner? Fox is the bad guy as is Scripps in these battles. Fox and Schipps want to charge the cable companies more money to carrier there networks on cable…Fox is telling Time Warner they want a $1 per subcriber…you are the subcriber. So Cablevision and Time Warner trying to hold down cable prices on your behalf are getting strong armed. People don’t realize your cable bill goes up with all the carriers every year “Dish” Fios,Direct, ETC..because the individule networks charge the carriers more money to carry their programs. You guys are shooting at the good guys. PS I’ve tried all the other choices out there..Fios has had double digit increases each year since coming to LI cablevision has gone up 6%, dollar for dollar you get the most for your money from Cablevision hands down.
How about they sell the cablevision helicopter that they use? It’s a transport copter, not a news copter. Then talk to me about all their doing to keep costs down for us.
FIOS TV IS TERRIBLE. MY PARENTS SWITCHED BACK TO CAblevision from FIOS since their bill was wrong every month. They were getting charged for channels they do not have. They were paying almost $32 bucks in sur charges and taxes a month. Bad customer service on top of the incorrect billing. Cablevision is only trying to keep their customers costs down. Scripps are the crooks.
I love Food Network too and I hope they come to an agreement.
It’s a shame Cablevision decided not to negotiate and keep Food Network. It was one of our favorite channels and now I find myself having to scramble to get a new system which will get this back on our TV.
I will cancel cablevision once my contract is up. I sign with those programs part of the package & without them I will make a CHANGE
Donna,
Just an fyi…CV has no contract, so you can cancel at any time.
Rate increase from Cablevision this month, and how less content for increased price! Cablevision is making switch to other providers (Direct TV, Verizon FIOS, Dish Network) so much easier … WAKE UP!
I’M SO DISAPPOINTED, SHAME ON YOU SCRIPPS! HAVE A LITTLE CONSIDERATION FOR THE LITTLE FISH IN THE POOL. I’VE BEEN A LOYAL WATCHER OF FOOD NETWORK FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, IT WILL BE SADLY MISSED IN MY HOUSE.I WAS LOOKING FOWARD TO SO MANY NEW SHOWS THIS YEAR, AS WELL LOOKING FOWARD TO CHECKING OUT MY OLD FRIENDS ON FOOD NETWORK. I GUESS THIS YEAR WILL NOT START OUT WITH A FREAKIN BANG!
TMS- SPLK HTS, N.J.
it’s not scripps – it is the big bad wolf cablevision – did you notice an increase in your bill this month? for what? dump cable!!
No one is speaking about the marketing money made by Scripps by selling cookbooks, cookware, etc… due to the fact that they CHOSE to be shown nationwide by cable systems for the money they AGREED to at the time. Don’t get me wrong, I watch the FN everyday and am upset also, but there is enough blame to go around on both sides.
Has anybody considered that there are too many channels on TV? As fewer people watch live and more of us stream or time-shift, we don’t need “Iron Chef,” “Unwrapped,” “How Much is My Home Worth?” or “The Bidet Brigade” on constant rotation. Once or twice will do. As cable networks sweat to keep their signals running 24/7 so they can capture declining ad revenue, they destroy successful series by rerunning them to death.
Narrowcasting has proven itself to be inefficient; it cuts the pie too small to feed anyone. Let each of the six conglomerates who control everything combine its channels and see what happens. Program budgets will rise along with revenues. The call for ala carte subscription will go away along with channel bundling (which ought to be illegal anyway). Nobody will lose work because it’s the same programmers entering the same codes, and the fewer venues that remain will be more affordable to the carriers and subscribers alike. This is how box stores killed independent merchants, only here the independent merchants (producers) will be able to make more shows.
