When last we left the tug of war over the future of The Terminator franchise, it was out for bid, and at least one potential buyer was Joss Whedon (prepared to ante all of $10,000). Today Halcyon Holding Group, which announced it was contemplating a sale of its rights to Terminator after filing for Chapter 11 protection last August as a result of a dispute with a lender, released the following statement:
“When Halcyon announced the bidding process for the Terminator franchise last month, we indicated that in addition to an outright sale of the property, we would also consider other strategic options, including a recapitalization ofthe company. Over the past few weeks Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios. In addition, a number of attractive refinancing alternatives have also been presented. In order to maximize the value of a transaction for all of the company’s creditors and stakeholders, we are fully analyzing all these options. As a result, we will not be committing to a ‘stalking horse’ bid at this time. Nonetheless, given the significant positive interest in the Terminator franchise, we expect to be in a position to announce a successful sale or recapitalization no later than February 1, 2010.”

So no one has made a bid yet, is that it?
Please, terminate this franchise, it’s greatest skill is at terminating independent film companies.
Just let the red light in its eyes fade to black, and move on to a new franchise. Possibly something involving sass-talking possums.
without Arnie or Cameron, this franchise is just an excuse to flush money down the toilet
Take Joss Whedon’s offer. Seriously.
Wow, this press release is almost as poorly written as the film. Obviously the rubes at Halcyon didn’t get their “stalking horse,” which is a firm bid that others can bid against, if you’re unfamiliar with this particular brand of Wall Street bullshit.
Look at it logically. These dopes paid 25 million for the franchise (well, they defaulted on the payments, and got sued by the hedge fund that loaned them the money but why get technical?) They got sued by their producing partner for 160 million bucks for fraud before the film even opened because they were already welching on money they owed people. They filed for bankruptcy before the DVD even came out. This Terminator grossed 60 million less than the last one, despite the rise in ticket prices. And since DVD sales are in the toilet everywhere, and that’s where a high-budget tentpole actually goes into profit, whoops, no profit. Oh, and the TV show from the franchise tanked too. Also the video game and the Six Flags ride, because Six Flags went bankrupt.
Maybe the Pizza Hut Terminator Salvation Pizza was good, that I don’t know, but if it was like the movie it cost too much to make, came in a flashy package, but was ultimately flat and tasteless. Therefore this franchise is worth:
The ten grand Joss Whedon offered. If they’re lucky.
I’ll tell you what the problem is here. They are expecting someone to offer a big money for the rights and no one has. And frankly, no one will.
Why? Because the Terminator brand is played out at this point. It needs to go away for a few years and then reappear with some hot new talent behind the camera.
No one is going to pay a premium for a franchise they can’t get started ASAP. If someone like Fox or WB does snap up the rights to the franchise then expect them to get it for a bargain and sit on the rights for a few years.
The numbers that were being floated around by Halcyon ($75m+ !!!!!!!) for the rights were absolutely laughable.
Give it back to James Cameron! He’ll make a T5 that’ll blow everyone’s socks away. Seriously.
Hey, I’ll bid $10,001 for it!
I see the props from T4 are now being sold through Hollywood PARTS, LLC – hard to say if Halcyon is involved since it might be someone who got stiffed when the company went belly up. Interesting however that the rubes in NM all got paid up front and in full thanks to a protection clause in the state’s rebate incentive program (http://www.abqjournal.com/opinion/editorials/25223132979opinioneditorials08-25-09.htm).
Give the franchise over to Peter Kay (the comedian) the whole idea can only be parodied now.
$50!
You lot need to get out more
Ok fisrt of all, “fan of the first three”??? If there is a week link in the franchise it’s the 3rd movie. Personally I thought Salvation was awesome, I don’t know what everyone else was expecting but it was better then I hoped. It cant compare to the 1st one, but then you will never get it back to that again.
I doubt that Cameron will want to make another one now and until I saw Salvation I thought it should never have gone without him. Still, I recon sell it to Whedon, simply cos I want to see what he can do with it. Most people, no doubt, don’t want a 5th but I’d LOVE to see Joss’s take on it.
Joss Whedon would have made something good come from this, would have been interesting to see what happened had they taken his offer.
T4 was, without any doubt, a terrible movie. It was poorly conceived, poorly written and qutie frankly boring. The reason the movie did not do as well as hoped at the box office was that it was so bad. But alot of bad movies make lots of money, so who knows really.
Halcyon is not going to get back their investment by selling the rights to a franchise that has petered out. Josh Whedon’s offer may be the best they get.
Maybe he’ll make Buffy vs. Terminator. That would be something.
I thought they already had 2 more films in the works??…Salvation was supposed to be the start of another trilogy last I heard
While I loved the first movie and liked the second, I had no problem with the following movies.
IMHO, T4 was killed by Sarah Connor fatigue. Sarah Connor was killed by bad writing, but then that may be unfair. There’s only so much rewriting history you can do before the whole thing is just absurd, pointless and tedious – there may have been very little the writers could do about that. I’ve been avoiding the new Star Trek for the same reason, though I’m beginning to get that that may be a mistake.
Cameron should buy it and bury it.
Give it to Whedon.
John Connor’s Sing-Along Blog is worth $10K, minimum.
you noobs are like pissed off people that hate twilight but spend all your time complaining about it. T1 & T2 are kickass. t3 is a different take to the series with some comedy and poor lines but i enjoyed it all the same. salvation was the movie i was waiting for. i wanted to see what the future looks like and i think they did a good approach to it.
I would just like some more Sarah Connor Chronicles, the movies are dead to me.
Someone send a terminator from the future to destroy this franchise
I’m not going to defend Terminator: Salvation. After all, its central plot seemed more like an idea for a TV episode not a movie. But the film also shows the scars of having been extensively rewritten when actor Christian Bale decided he wanted to play John Connor rather than Marcus Wright. Connor had been a minor character in the scripts, and now the producers had to make him the leading character. The production also had to contend with MGM fighting Warner Bros. for distribution and The Halcyon Company acquiring the property during pre-production. Also Connor was suppose to die in the picture, but when that news leaked out, the producers grafted on a completely insane ending where he is given a heart transplant in a field hospital by a medic!
It’s just one of those Hollywood stories. I wouldn’t say the franchise is dead, but someone really needs a strong story idea and not blindly follow the timeline set out in the previous movies.
I absolutely loved the first 2 Terminator films. I liked the 3rd one but I will admit it wasn’t as good as one and two. I loved Salvation because it finally shows us what the war begins to look like. I would love for James Cameron to come back and direct the next 2 but I doubt its going to happen. I think 5 and 6 are gonna be just as good as Salvation. Go Terminator, My favorite movie franchise of all time.
Terminator is the shit, leave this to a company that wants to buy the rights and bring Terminator too the roots…no phony greedy hollywood company that just wants to buy the exclusive rights for self profit! Salvation was dope, and a worthy sequel to T2 Judgement day, regardless of what fake ass critics say. Terminator is officially re instated, “fate is what you make” bring Terminator back, we need 5 and 6..and if its no James Cameron, then bring back MCG to finish the next two sequels…he gets my approval…hats off to MCG. He brought the whole mythology and legendary story back with barrels blazing! Now only if he can bring back Robert Patrick as the T1000 or as a scientist that designed it, that would be awesome…bring back Linda Hamilton! Michael Biehn!!! Anyway the new Reese and Sam Worthington were a awesome addition to the cast…Id like to see where this story goes….Hasta La Vista baby…
