So the liberal talk radio network Air America — home of Rachel Maddow, Randi Rhodes, and Al Franken before he ran for the U.S. Senate — is ceasing operations after 5 years, saying it will file for bankruptcy and halt live programming operations this afternoon. Charlie Kireker, chair of Air America Media, issued this statement:
It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.
The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America’s business. This past year has seen a “perfect storm” in the media industry generally. National and local advertising revenues have fallen drastically, causing many media companies nationwide to fold or seek bankruptcy protection. From large to small, recent bankruptcies like Citadel Broadcasting and closures like that of the industry’s long-time trade publication Radio and Records have signaled that these are very difficult and rapidly changing times.
Those companies that remain are facing audience fragmentation as a result of new media technologies, are often saddled with crushing debt, and have generally found it difficult to obtain operating or investment capital from traditional sources of funding. In this climate, our painstaking search for new investors has come close several times right up into this week, but ultimately fell short of success.
With radio industry ad revenues down for 10 consecutive quarters, and reportedly off 21% in 2009, signs of improvement have consisted of hoping things will be less bad. And though Internet/new media revenues are projected to grow, our expanding online efforts face the same monetization and profitability challenges in the short term confronting the Web operations of most media companies
When Air America Radio launched in April, 2004 with already-known personalities like Al Franken and then-unknown future stars like Rachel Maddow, it was the only full-time progressive voice in the mainstream broadcast media world. At a critical time in our nation’s history — when dissent on issues such as the Iraq war were often denounced as “un-American” — Air America and its talented team helped millions of Americans remember the importance of compelling discussion about the most pivotal events and decisions of our generation.
Through some 100 radio outlets nationwide, Air America helped build a new sense of purpose and determination among American progressives. With this revival, the progressive movement made major gains in the 2006 mid-term elections and, more recently, in the election of President Barack Obama and a strongly Democratic Congress.
Laws have changed for the better thanks to this revival…..but all the same our company cannot escape the laws of economics. So we intend a rapid, orderly closure over the next few days. All current employees will be paid through today, January 21. A severance package will be offered tomorrow to full-time current employees with more than six months of tenure.
We will strive to assist affiliates and partners in achieving a smooth transition. Starting at 6 pm EST today, we will provide our affiliates, listeners and users a selection of encore programming until 9 pm EST on Monday, January 25, at which time Air America programming will end.
We are proud that Air America’s mission lives on through the words and actions of so many former radio hosts who are active today in progressive causes and media nationwide. In the years ahead, as we look back, we should all be proud of our passionate determination to assure that our nation’s progressive voice would be heard loud and clear. Through the hard work and dedication of current staff, and those who preceded you, a lasting legacy was forged which will now continue through other voices and venues.
Thank you.

Eegads. First Scott Brown, now this? What next? Pat Robertson named new host of the Tonight Show?
HCR dead in the water… check.
Lost Ted Kennedy’s seat… check.
Unregulated corporate political ads… check.
I knew the Democrats were missing one more piece of bad news this week.
Thanks Garafalo!
yes, it’s great week to be an american! now if we can just figure out a way to get rid of keith olberman as well.
Now that’s change I can believe in! You produce trash you get what you deserve.
Good riddance…..
Unlike my GOP friends (yes, I have a handful of them), I don’t need to have my views reinforced over and over again the way that the mindless lemmings do who routinely turn on Rush or Glenn or Bill or Fox News in general.
They can’t go a day without their fix of having the flames fanned about how so & so is ruining America; I’d simply rather have the news.
So, it doesn’t surprise me that Air America would go out of business. It doesn’t pay to sell a product to an audience which generally prefers to think for itself rather than be spoon fed the gruel.
That tired old tripe about conservatives and Republicans not being able to think for themselves has got to stop. If you are a liberal and you read the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times or any other mainstream journal or if you listen to NPR or watch MSNBC or CNN etc., you are getting the same echo chamber effect that you are so snidely accusing those to your right of having. Therefore we could make the same claim about you — but we don’t. I think for myself as does every other conservative I know. Yes we like to listen to people who share our views, but who doesn’t. I suspect your radio tuner is set at NPR and your subscription to the NYT is auto-renewed before expiration. But I’m sure that’s only because you’re too mindless to change the dial or figure out how to cancel your subscription.
If you think the Washington Post is liberal you are the f*cking idiot. Whatever, genius.
You’re right, Dana Millbank is the epitome of conservative idealism. Can you even actually read?
I seldom watch MSNBC and just briefly go over CNN’s webpage for a quick distillation of the news. I read European outlets on the web. Yes, I listen to NPR in the car, but I have conservative friends who listen to NPR and really can’t find much “fault” (i.e. ideological bias) in it and frankly, neither can I. It’s pretty much “the news.” And people like Warren Olney do a GREAT job at having guest from across the ideological spectrum on his show. If you ever listen to KCRW, my favorite show is “Left, Right & Center” which presents viewpoints which run the gamut.
I only speak of the “spoon feeding of information” from personal experience with members of my family and certain friends who feel the need to listen, uninterrupted to 24 hours of droning on by those who fear so much on the right. And it’s hateful, myopic speech that’s parroted back to me in these pre-formed, uninformed sound bites.
I’m just glad I don’t have to listen to you because you’re obviously one of those boorish fools.
What’s the problem here? People weren’t listening to the network, for whatever reason, and as a result it has gone bye-bye. It’s not like there aren’t liberal listeners out there. I’m not mourning AA one bit. On with the new!
Surely this is something the Obama administration can step in and prevent
Oh that’s OK, folks are REALLY pissed about the bailouts, and Goldman Sachs’ ownership of the federal government. Both parties are in GS’ pockets, and both parties are about to be teabagged.
Bout f–king time.
Don’t cry too loudly for Air America. Many liberal AM radio hosts have already been picked up by other networks. Randi Rhodes was picked up by Premiere, the same outfit that hosts Rush and Hannity. Mike Malloy is self-syndicating. And as of this writing, Ron Reagan is still on LA’s KTLK.
Just goes to show you what happens when a liberal agenda with liberal executives run a corporation. The same can be said about how our country is being run.
Hmm… I’m sure somehow this must be Bush’s fault. Wait’s for the inevitable Obama prime time speech that this must be Bush’s fault. I’m surprised they haven’t gotten bail out money yet.
Air America in shambles? Scott Brown? VA and NJ going Repub? Obama being painted as a empty cue-card reciting shell with no grasp on anything? Looks like the Ari and Rham show is over. Maybe it’s time to cater to the REAL masses in order to make money here at our studios/networks.
So let’s check the ratings for conservative talk radio, Drudge, and FOX News (Beck, O’Reilly, Palin). Wow. How’s that Al Gore network, Bush-bashing, anti-war, MSNBC, and global warming thing going? Ouch.
I guess it’ll take the major studios and networks about 3 more years to realize that these indie/conservative little people in flyover country may actually be the majority to whom we should target our entertainment offerings? Instead of 50 films about how horrible our military and wars are, maybe somebody should grow balls and write a no-brainer tentpole kick-ass movie about American military strength instead. Then watch as it’s a monster hit – and every studio begins to retool to adapt.
Louis Mayer once was asked if he was a Dem or a Repub – or if he sympathized with the “REDS”. He said he’s “GREEN”, and whatever sells is HIS political party. Maybe someone at a studio here in Hollywood could revist that analogy. Send Bullworth his obituary.
Isn’t this kind of like a tree falling in the woods when no one is around?
Not surprising. Even as a liberal I couldn’t stomach listening to them, just as I can’t stand watching Olbermann.
C
Boy, are their three listeners going to be irked.
buh, bye…you won’t be missed.
Color this under “Duh.” Air America was doomed from the start. Talk radio is conservative for a reason — it has almost no competition. Air America’s competition was: NPR, PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX (entertainment anyway), CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, Time, Newsweek, USA-Today, the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, etc.
Air America could not sell ads, because no one listened. Why would they? Here in LA you have both Pacifica KPFK (hard looney left) and NPR affiliate KCRW (regular left). Air America? They’re fighting over the same audience.
I guess they ran out of non-profits aiding minorities to rip-off to pay their rich hosts.
Air America was still on the air?…
Come on, the real reason “Air America” is off the air is that their programming became tepid and boring. Political talk radio works when it’s angry and has an enemy to rail against daily. Conservative radio always has that…if it’s not Obama, then it’s liberal judges, immigrants, gays or Muslims that are the enemy. “Air America” only had that anger when George W. Bush was in office and even before Bush left office, “Air America” was starting to cut loose its most polarizing, partisan voices like Sam Seder, Janeane Garafalo, Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy. That’s when it started getting boring. I’m a militant liberal and even I stopped listening. The local affiliate here in Los Angeles (Progressive Talk AM 1150) broadcasts bore-fests like Ron Reagan and some idiot named Phil Hendrie that does stupid cartoon voices throughout his entire show, desperately being the contrarian to create on-air conflict. Lame. Not to mention other affiliates that broadcast morons like Jerry Springer and Montell Williams (who isn’t even liberal). Those early, angry days of “Air America” were great, but the programming directors made sure they didn’t last.
Greg: Exactly! We liberals like to “think for ourselves.” We think CRITICALLY, dammit, with intense deliberation — pondering, analyzing, weighing the facts, the data, the statistics — really LISTENING to what the other side is saying — and only THEN do we form some sort of opinion.
That’s the LIBERAL way!!!
How does the Air America audience “think for itself”? The irony of a progressive (LIBERAL) crowd is that everyone actually thinks the same way. Let’s see – hate Bush, hate Fox, hate Rush, never mention MSNBC or Olberman and his hate-filled diatribes. But they all think for themselves! Most liberal crowds loves idealism, feelings and utopian views until they walk out to their Lexus, pick up their Gelson’s meal and the Arugula at TJ’s. Air America was boring and had no point since the ideas discussed never hold up to debate. Good nIght and good riddance!
Congrats, you have posted an entire paragraph free from any real thought or analysis and composed of nothing but straw men (while of course thinking you’re showing that “the other side” has your own problems with logic and critical reasoning). I bet you’re fun at parties.
Please get rid of NPR too! Here’s their daily agenda: Obama, the economy, world music… about as fucking lame as the rampant Funny People ads on this site. Talk about an epic fail!
Air America’s problem was it is not America… It is Fidel, Che, Hugo, European liberal, old school progressive (read Woodrow Wilson,FDR). We aren’t perfect but we are the greatest nation & political system on the planet. Mao and Stalin are heroes to those who founded AA, those two men murdered more millions of humans than all the abortions, drunk driving killings and murdered blacks/slaves in this country. American values would not support a bunch of extreme, fringe socialists/statis on a radio station….
And the great thing is that those that did support it will soon have to crawl back under the rock the came out from…:-(
You’re a fukking moron if you actually believe Mao and Stalin are anyone’s heroes.
