UPDATES Scripps Yanks Food Network & HGTV Off Cablevision in Tri-State
UPDATE: Cablevision emails me that reports of hundreds of thousands of abusive phone calls flooding their offices are “not correct. Customer interest in this issue has been modest and mostly manufactured by Scripps.”
Comments keep pouring in to Deadline Hollywood from furious Cablevision subscribers who want their Food Network and HGTV back on the channel lineup after the Scripps Networks’ programming went off this past weekend and stays off. (FYI, you missed a pretty good Iron Chef battle using vegetables from the White House garden. But you were spared watching Bobby Flay act like a jerk again. Tell me, why is the Food Network now the Bobby Flay Network? A little of that egomaniac goes a long way.) I hear hundreds of thousands of abusive phone calls have been flooding Cablevision since then. Now comes the flopsweat. No longer is Cablevision claiming it would “never, ever again” carry Scripps Networks’ programming. Instead, here’s their latest “We’re the victim” whiney statement about this mess:
“Cablevision offered Scripps the ability to continue delivering HGTV and Food Network to our customers while we negotiated a new agreement. This is common practice in the cable industry, and such an extension occurred in the recent dispute between Time Warner Cable and the Fox Network, and in Scripps’ own negotiations with Time Warner Cable. But instead, with virtually no warning, Scripps took the extraordinary step of flipping a switch and removing its channels from Cablevision – effectively holding their own viewers hostage in order to pursue a more than 200 percent fee increase from Cablevision and our customers. The channels where HGTV and Food Network appeared on Cablevision remain available, and if Scripps really cared about their viewers Scripps could put their programming back while we negotiate a new agreement. We believe it was irresponsible for Scripps to take the channels off, and it is irresponsible for them not to put the channels back on.”
Here is Scripps Networks’ statement claiming just the opposite:
Cablevision simply is not telling the truth. Scripps Networks has been trying to have productive negotiations with Cablevision for more than six months, but to no avail. Repeated requests to sit down together to discuss a fair market price for HGTV and Food Network have been rejected – even as recently as Sunday afternoon.
Cablevision is trying to characterize our rate increases as exorbitant and our negotiating strategies as unusual or unethical.
Yet, every other cable and satellite provider in the country has willingly and professionally renegotiated a fair market rate for the rights to carry these popular networks. That’s why both networks can still be seen on every other cable, satellite and telecom system in the country except Cablevision. Under our current contracts, Cablevision pays us about 25 cents per subscriber for the combination of Food Network and HGTV. That combined rate is substantially lower than rates earned by other, individual top 10 cable networks and considerably less than rates Cablevision pays itself for less popular networks that it owns.
True, short-term contract extensions are often granted, but only when the two parties are engaged in productive negotiations and there has been substantive agreement between them. Cablevision’s offer was take-it-or-leave-it, and would still make Food Network – a Top 10 network – one of the lowest paid channels on its lineup.
We regret deeply the interruption of service for Cablevision customers who rely on Food Network and HGTV quality programming, but we hope and trust that they understand that Cablevision can’t get something for nothing. Let’s be clear, we have been and remain ready and willing to negotiate. But until they will step forward in good faith, it’s Cablevision that’s holding their customers hostage.
But Pali Research media analyst Rich Greenfield this morning blames Cablevision and accuses the Dolans of “playing bully and kicking Food/HGTV out of the sandbox” because “its management are far more stubborn than anyone else in the multichannel industry”. Here’s more:
Cablevision and its management team simply do not follow the playbook of their peers and its behavior does not always appear rational to outsiders. While fighting Scripps is unexpected at first glance, as it has relatively inexpensive channels (even after the increases it was asking for), we suspect CVC is simply trying to draw a line in the sand, as it knows that retrans fees for broadcast will upwardly bias programming costs going forward. In turn, slowing cable network programming fee growth is critical for Cablevision, as well as its multichannel industry peers.
– We suspect Cablevision believes it is in a stronger position to fight a cable network cost increase, such as Scripps, based on its far higher (than industry peer) triple-play penetration (an estimated 65% as of end of Q3 2009) – the implication being, if a consumer has video/voice/data from Cablevision, switching multichannel providers simply because you lost Food Network and HGTV is a major pain/inconvenience.
– Assuming the programming battle lasts for an extended period of time (meaning weeks), we suspect CVC basic/digital sub losses could be modestly higher than expected in Q1 2010, albeit programming costs should benefit; whereas Scripps will suffer a drop in subscription and advertising fees (lower advertising due to a loss of distribution in the #1 DMA), with the outcome of its currently extended negotiation with TIme Warner critical to 2010 results (unclear if TWC is prepared to take the hard-line stance that Cablevision has, albeit we would love them to follow Cablevision’s lead).

As I read it on scale of 1 to 79 Food TV and HGTV are rated as 72nd and 75th; that is as close to the bottom you can get without crashing. Scripps is demanding to be paid as if they were in the 35th place. It is clear that the greedy one is Scripps. Cablevision could easily accept 700% increase for these two so-so channels and pass it on to the consumer, but they are not doing that. I bet you wouldn’t be happy with Cablevision if they did that either.
Cablevision and/or Scripps are guilty of defrauding every customer that is paying for the HGTV and Food Network channels. They, and I don’t give a _ _ _ _ , who removed the programs. All I know is that I am being charged, paying for, and are being deprived of the services for which I am paying (contracted). One would think that this is but another opportunity for the lawyers to get involved.
At one time I might even think that our govenrment (FCC) might be interested in helping the consumer but Hah ! Things REALLY SUCK – who is left to go to bat for all of us ??
I think that its terrible that the customer has been left out to dry while these 2 try to kill each other! It shows that they both dont care about the people who pay their bills. And it is us who will be paying higher rates for this. I have reduced my service to basic cable and have been getting my share of cooking from public tv. Thanks dvr. So long Ina,Paula,Gina and Pat; see you on dvds!
Goodbye Cablevision Hello FIOS. I guess Cablevision will be bought by Comcast within a couple of years because they will be loosing too many customers over this. Cablevision wise up and don’t charge us any increase. I give this one more week before I jump to Verizon FIOS.
Cablevision is not playing fair. They control Long Island T.V.
Customers pay top rate for services and have to pay top price to have channels deleted. Who can make sense of that??
Play fair !!! GIVE US BACK HGTV AND FOOD NETWORK
I will look into FIOS and other options
This is 2 bullies having a pissing contest, and us getting wet.
Right now I’m stuck with Cablevision, geography and lack of FIOS penetration in my area means I’ve no choice (for now). What frosts me is that Cablevision just up our monthly fee by $4! When they cut the channels we called and demanded a refund. Why should we be paying the same for less? But they wouldn’t do it!
I hear DirecTV has launched some more sats. Maybe now we’ll have line of sight to one.
The only reason CV won’t offer a refund is greed.
I am switching to Fios since I don’t see CV making any efforts to end this dispute. And as far as CV downplaying the disatisfaction from subscribers; it demonstrates the lack of integrity on the part of CV. They are being overwhelmed with complaints in my opinion. Not only that, the requests to cancel CV service should be increasing with every passing day, as people get their new providers to connect service.
I give Cablevision 1 more week of this garbage. After that, I switch to Verizon Fios. BTW, Cablevision, I bet that most customers would pay another $2/mo for these channels. After $180, who’s counting? Just don’t get more greedy than that. This is what you planned all along anyway. Gouge the public for more $ and blame it on Scripps.
I called Cablevision and told them I appreciated their dilemma but why weren’t they reducing my bill since they aren’t providing the service? If they aren’t negotiating a raise because they have to raise my cable price why don’t I get the reduction when I’m not getting the service at all?
The answer I got is they are providing the signal but Scripps, the owner of both HGTV and the Food Network aren’t broadcasting the signal to Cablevision.
Of course I was completely satisfied with this answer and will continue to pay Cablevision whatever they want for whatever service they decide to provide in perpetuity.
Every time that Time Warner was having a dispute with a production company, they still managed to keep the programming on. Last year Cablevision pulled all VOOM channels without prior notice to the consumers. Cablevision will be getting a 3.7% increase this year. How long do they think they can pull this crap? The Food Network and HGTV may not be important to everyone, but it’s the principle. Stop taking channels off or else you’ll do to Cablevision what you did to the Wiz. Anybody remember that? Dolans, get off of your asses and try pleasing your customers for once in your greedy lives!
I loved the news report yesterday showing pictures of Dolan’s giant estate, complete with two sets of gates around his mansion. Pfffft.
I pay way too much for the basic services so why should I swallow another recent increase plus removal of 2 channels I enjoy. I can get my channels back and pay less at a competitor so why not switch providers?
Cablevision should take the increase I’m paying and give it to Scripps. And please, stop the whining CV.
VOTE WITH YOUR REMOTE! Glad to see so many people expressing their anger at Cablevision….now that we have been shaken from our apathy,,,,, ACT! Don’t threaten…. DO! Switch, downgrade, revolt, call your senator, the Attorney General! Why aren’t we getting a discount for reduced choices???? Can we break our contract with no penalty???
Jim Dolan, come out of your iron compound and visit the ‘real people’ in the real world. We have had enough of your company and your whining!!!
like many others i am a renter so cablevision is it for me, if i could do satelite or fios i would!!! but was is really sad is how we have let cablevision take us over completely….tv phone and internet no one leaves because it is all to convient, but now cablevision is a total monopoly that controls us all!!
The blame game has been going on since Adam & Eve.Neither side is right here and both are greedy. The customers pay the price, Problem is (as in the banking industry etc) greed makes everyone pay. And they hold us hostaqge especially is there’s no other game in town. These company executives get used to living large and don’t want to “sacrifice” anything that will get in the way of their lifestyles. The buck doesn’t stop anywhere up the line and all parties are guilty. I, for one, am going to be switching to Direct TV. These cable companies need to know we mean business!
This is possibly the most amusing argument I’ve seen on TV in a while. I love how both companies are blaming each other, meanwhile we get the shaft.
However, I will not be switching providers because Verizon is incompetent when it comes to billing (check your cell phone bills and your phone bills to see proof of this) and Direct TV doesn’t appeal to me.
I do think both companies need to stop the needless BS and get their acts together.
Just saw an ad on Futon Critic: WPIX in NYC (channel 11) will air Food Network’s Super Chef battle Sunday 8 pm.
I think this is a ploy by Cablevision. Make very public the rising costs of T.V., to the point where it actually affects its customers. Then give in to the 25 cent, or whatever increase there is. THEN, raise your customers $5 or $10 a month, and blame it on the networks……Also, when was the last time Cablevision raised their bill by less than $5- $10 a month? Probably never. They go straight up. They will throw a 10% increase at you, and if your paying $150 a month, and most of you are, there is your $15 a month hike. If they are complaining about a 25 cent raise for 2 channels combined, then this type of increase must not happen that often. If they raised your bill by $10 a month, that would cover this same price raise for 80 channels. And, according to cablevision, that is a high rate increase that does not happen often. Of course I am not including inflation adjustment for other things like employees, vehicles, CEO bonuses, etc… But does anyone see what I am talking about? Cablevison is clearly setting up its customers for a nice little rate increase, problem is, its customers cant say no to it, like they can to Scripps.
If this doesn’t end soon then it’s time to switch from Cablevision to a more dependable network. This should not be happening to us. We did nothing. It’s between Cablevision & Scripps. Why punish us. So childish.
two children fight on the playground, no one knows for sure what happened but the child who, in the past demonstarted a lack of character gets the blame….i blame cablevision…as if! they re concerned with saving me money….
any truth in this…cablevision got pissy when scripps gave verizon exclusive rights to another channel so cable took their toys and went home
wow.. I’ve never seen so many people so deprived in life!! Seriously? Your life revolves around griping, bitching and moaning about 2 tv networks???? Maybe you should pick up those cookbooks you ran out to buy from the ‘talent’ on these networks and read something instead of being sucked into television programming. Then maybe you wouldn’t feel held hostage by your tv!
I’m a Cablevision subscriber (for tv and internet) and miss the old days when cable first came into our homes where we could pick and choose which cable channels we actually wanted by choosing small packaged channels (i.e. only HBO, or only Showtime, etc. for $3.99/mo.) I have to subscribe to the ‘Silver Pkg’ just to get my sports channels (i.e. Versus and MSG Networks for hockey) and I have some 800 other channels I never watch!!! But hey, I have no choice about it… can I audit my channel selections of the past year and ask for a refund on the channels I’ve never ever clicked onto?? So be realistic, suck it up people… refunds will never happen, it’s just not good for their business.
I’ve also tried to way the pros and cons of switching.. currently still with Verizon for my home phone ($65/mo. for local and long distance which I rarely ever use)and considering adding it to my Cablevision for their Triple Play pkg deal to save $30 a month (plus I get free movie tickets to Clearview Cinemas (owned by Cablevision of course and on Tuesdays only between Noon and Midnite or discounted ticket prices in person plus $20 off my bill)). Or hell even going the route of searching the Internet for a VoIP provider that’s dirt cheap compared to both. At any rate, Fios, Dish and DirectTv all have their downsides too and to get the channels I want for my needs (if they even carry them to begin with), I’ll end up paying the same amount of money. So I think I’ll spare myself the headache of switching services and maybe find a decent deal for my money.
Good luck with your switching providers like you do you cell phones… and getting stuck in those long term contracts!
As far as I am concerned both parties can go screw themselves, I could give two craps about them coming to an agreement. They’re greedy mofos and I have to say that public television is sooooooo much better than the garbage on food network with the exception of probably a good few, but even thats not enough to get me paying more. Bobby Flay’s ad on the radio and television makes me sick to my stomach, if he’s so sorry about whats happening with the cablevision customers why doesn’t he get a paycut from foodnetwork since he and all of food network tv hosts are the reason scripps wants more money from us to begin with. Ta hell with them A-holes!!!!!!!
I switched from Cablevision to Direct TV and cancelled the service in 24hrs. The programming and quality was great but the prices were not. The equipment and installation was free but every descrambler card came with a hefty price, plus they lock you in a 24 month contract (unless you cancel in 24 hrs.) The worst part was their sales didnt quote me the prices honestly. I learnt the horror stories from colleagues at work, confirmed the hidden rates with their cust. serv. and cancelled … whew! Read their reviews and then contemplate on switching. Also, I want FN and HGTV to be pay channels. If you care for those programs, please buy them as optional. And Cablevision, please give the rest of us the $0.25 discount, I shall be very happy.
With shows like Rachel ray & melissa D’arabian…i have got more disinterested in Food TV…so not missing them on cable.
Cablevision customers are complaining about the greed of Cablevision and Scripps network. What I would like to know is where do the hosts of all the shows that are on HGTV and Foodnetwork? Bobby Flay posted a comment against Cablevision. We are the fans of these shows and if we did not watch them they would not be on. The Foodnetwork hosts sell all types of merchandise on the Foodnetwork website, stores, etc. They promote different products for a salary. Talk about greed, how much money are the hosts of these shows earning. A good example is Paula Dean, new house, new kitchen. Did you see her on Cribs, did you see her outdoor cooking area? Who paid for that? Most people are lucky to have a kitchen that has a tenth of that. Yes I know that these hosts work hard and should be compensated accordingly, but there is limit. Maybe they should become involved. The longer this goes on the more I loose interest in these hosts. This stalemate between Cablevision and Scripps might just catch on with other companies. Right know if I printed out all the recipes and helpfull articles from both networks I would have a library of information to last a lifetime, and not need the channels. I believe we should write to our favorite hosts and ask them for their help, and see how much the fans truly mean to them. If Cablevision, Scripps, and the hosts of these shows all gave a little back I believe a reasonable rate could be reached. At this time with the economy these three groups should think about the people that watch these shows, absence does not always make the heart grow fonder. Out of sight, out of mind, may prevail.
This is pure greed and stuborness by both companies and totally unfair to the consumers. For what we pay for Cablevision and to have them drop the 2 channels that I watch the most and not want to give refunds, granted they won’t mount to much, just confirms they are not willing to lose any of their profits. They could very easily pass these costs on to their advertisers, not the consumers. These are very popular shows, better than some of the “Reality Crap” on and they actually can inspire people to improve their lives. Scripps is playing a dirty game here and Cablevision is following suit. Being held by the short hairs on not having other options is just as nasty. I am going to down size my cablevision packages to the bare minimum. I now have XM radio in my house and find that I am much more productive and do not have the TV on at all. I believe we should go to metered service. Pay for what you watch. Up to this point I have swallowed all that Cablevision has dished out due to their reliabilty and good service but this has changed my mind. And when cable goes out why is there no reduction in the bill? At least when you lose power you aren’t charged for what you don’t use. Pure greed, wanting to make more, provide less and not a care at all about the consumer. Both Cablevision and Scripps suck in my book. May you both fail!
