Daniel Craig is trading his James Bond-issue Walther PPK for a six-shooter. It's for Cowboys and Aliens, the Jon Favreau directed adaptation of the Platinum Studios graphic novel that DreamWorks and Universal will put into production this year. I hear Craig is in talks to replace Robert Downey Jr, who just dropped out of the film. Sources in the Craig camp admit 007 has an offer, but no deal.
The story is set in the Old West, with cowboys and Native Americans pausing from their battles in Arizona to focus on a spaceship that arrives with a new enemy wielding space-age artillery. While the premise sounds silly, the guys behind Cowboys and Aliens are serious. Producers include Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, and Transformers guys Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Platinum Studios’ Scott Mitchell Rosenberg is also in there.

Wow. Could this movie have any stupider premise? But wait– it’s based on something and some guys with huge fees want to get paid, so it must be worth making. Hollywood is pathetic.

You’re instincts are right Nikki. C&A is silly and many in the Comics Biz are surprised that such big names are chomping to make this. A good title doesn’t necessarily make a good movie.
A truly bonafide retarded premise if there ever was one. I mean seriously. It sounds like a concept a kindergartner on ritalin would make up in the middle of recess just to get some attention.
You guys are idiots, this is a FANTASTIC concept. If you don’t like alien invasion movies, that’s fine, but having the aliens invade the Wild West makes just as much sense as a modern invasion, and should be way more fun. Think about it. Absurd alien weapons up against pistols / bows and arrows is a lot more entertaining than up against our almost-as-absurd modern weapons. Plus, the angle of the cowboys and Native Americans putting their war aside and joining forces is really interesting. I wish I’d thought of this concept!
Uh, guys, it’s a popcorn movie, of course the premise sounds ridiculous. It also sounds tongue-in-cheek and a lot of fun, especially in Jon Favreau’s capable hands.
Seriously, why is it any more ridiculous than any other summer movie?
I dont see what’s so stupid about it. We make so many movies about aliens coming to us in the modern area… why not the old west? I think it’s going to be an interesting twist.
I think if this is pulled off right, it could be pretty great. The “Weird West” genre is small, but is often entertaining and has had a few gems (Westworld, Brisco Country, Joe Lansdale books). I’m also looking forward to Jonah Hex, especially with Brolin in the lead role.
I know how Scott Rosenberg likes to put his Platinum name on everything and ignore the past but Cowboys & Aliens was a Malibu Comics property first.

Okay all…here’s the scoop. This was a huge spec sale years ago. I believe Clint Eastwood was attached to direct at the time. The concept is actually very cool. What is uncool is what is going to happen when they make the movie. It’s going to end up with all the bad effects, blowups, machines etc. Instead of keeping it somewhat simple and character driven you will have a pile of Transformer junk.

P.S. THE A-TEAM. Inside scoop…this is a mess. The filmmakers know it, the studio knows it and they are just hoping that the stupid audience buys into this trash like they often do. But you are hearing it here…everyone involved is laugh crying inside about how bad this dud is.
