It’s a surprise development for the ABC drama Brothers And Sisters, but Rob Lowe has worked out an amicable exit strategy with ABC’s Steve McPherson, who brought him in when the series stumbled out of the gate. The ratings rebounded at the time, and then Lowe’s character, U.S. Sen. Robert McCallister, became a regular cast member. Insiders said that, since then, the show has been through at least 4 different show runners, and he felt under-utilized in the family drama storyline. McPherson confirmed Lowe’s exit. “We would like to keep Rob at ABC; we feel he should be anchoring his own franchise. We are in talks now.” Lowe previously exited West Wing also in the middle of its series run.

I don’t think the show stumbled out of the gate.. the first season was fantastic.. it was only when they brought in NotWalkerRebecca to seduce Sarah’s husband that the show started to lose it’s way (and has been downhill ever since). Jon Robin Baitz, please return to save your baby!
Nielsen says otherwise.
I love him on this show. Oh well…
It’s funny; when Rob Estes left 90210 recently, I got him confused with Lowe. And now both have ‘amicably’ exited the series. That said, I’m with Lowe here. The show lost a lot after Jon Robin Baitz got the axe, and it never really recovered.
Sorry, ‘their’ respective series. Estes left 90210 and Lowe left Brothers and Sisters, not the same show. Funny how missing two letters changes an entire sentence…
a reboot of Lion’s Den, perhaps?
This has been coming for…ever since Rob joined the show. He’s all about him, and rightly so, yet his character is never first and often the fifth or sixth fiddle on this show. I thought they were going to kill him off last year but instead they killed him and immediately brought him back from the dead. I’m much more interested in wtf is happening with Bart! Balthazar Getty has been in about 2 episodes this season (out of at least 13), and this after missing a handful last season after he apparently stopped attending table reads. (Why do ABC stars all hate their jobs??!?!) But he’s still on the show, still in the main credits, and still pulling in paychecks. I’m waiting for the EXCLUSIVE report about his exit strategy. I hope it involves an elevator shaft.
Hope his new show does better than the show he left West Wing for.
Two words for you: McLean Stevenson. You lucked out, after a dry spell, when you left The West Wing, in getting B&S (where your character was NOT a series regular at the beginning); you’re pressing your luck hoping lightning will strick again.
Okay, I know it’s not going to happen, but THE WEST WING was initially supposed to have him as the lead character, and the surprise power of Sheen as Bartlet led them to reficus the show. And it was the right thing to do for that show.
But who wouldn’t like to see a new show: SEABORN, starring Rob Lowe as freshman Congressman Sam Seaborn, created and written by Aaron Sorkin.
Yeah, yeah, it isn’t going to happen. But I’d love to see it.
Okay, I’m in. That’d happen in a perfect world, and I know it’s not going to happen, but, her, we can dream, can’t we???
Personally, I think a new West Wing revolving around Josh as Chief of Staff would be a much better spin off. Sam and Santos would be the primary supporting roles, along with Donna. Kristen Cehnoweth’s character would be a third focus, along with some of the recurring characters from the Santos campaign. Toby would find a way to be roped in as communications director, along with Will Bailey, and CJ would be incorporated into the show, but not working in the White House. She’d be married to Danny, who would still be a White House reporter. Kate Harper would also be offered a job on the security staff. And, we musn’t forget Alan Alda being Secretary of State.
I’m gonna add Amy Gardner in there as well, just for shits & giggles. She’s a lot of fun. Having her work for Donna would make things a lot funnier.
Thank goodness! He is awfully boring on the show. Kitty should be with Alec instead (the guy she emotionally feel for last season; they were great together!). And, please get new show runners so the show can get back to being good again… Please.
I’d like to see him headline a comedy like ‘Gavin & Stacey.’
He’s a bit… dry for that, no? Eric McCormack is similar enough to him to fill any comedy spot Lowe might do, I’d say, and do it better, and I’m not even particularly a fan of McCormack. Lowe has this tendency to seem annoyed or frustrated even when his character is enjoying himself.
i’m sad he’s leaving. he adds a lot. i do think he’s good enough to be the lead in any show. like him or not, his eyes draw you in. i don’t care about any diva-ness (tho i was unaware he had any). if you’re good enough to back it up, it’s fine.
hey kurt, good point.i loved the west wing, and i thought he was supposed to be the lead in it,but i would like to see what became of sam seaborn….but then it would air on nbc right?…sigh!!wishful thinkin i guess…ya think they will get it right?….in our lifetime?….me neither!
I can’t say I’m surprised or sorry.
I love Rob Lowe and would watch him do anything; but this show makes me want to pull my hair out!
It’s funny cause I was about to advocate for him to leave after last Sunday’s ep on a B&S site. I can’t/couldn’t take it anymore.
This cast is so terrific but the writers – or showrunners perhaps – make these characters look ridiculous. All of them. Most of all the great Sally Field who I use to love. Nora makes me want to pull more hair out!
Maybe Ron Rifkin can go with Rob to a new show. What a waste of a great actor! Last week’s ep Saul looked like an idiot.
Yes this show had a lot of possibility and some great moments. If you haven’t seen Rob’s 2 hour ep from last season you’re missing something great.
But there are too many characters. And no direction where any of the storylines are going.
And for Robert . . . he’s run for President, been a Senator, sort of run for Governor, courted and married Kitty, tried to have children, adopted a baby, been divorced with 2 children, a gay brother never seen again, parents have died, wife has had cancer, and he’s had a heart attack and come back to life.
I’m not sure what else there is?
Running your wife’s campaign for your Senate seat while she’s recovering from cancer and has a baby she just had to have for 2 full seasons? This is after you’ve claimed you have no desire to raise campaign dollars and be on the campaign trail anymore.
And this isn’t just the Kitty/Robert storyline. It’s all of them.
I’m surprised if the show makes a fifth season. This fabulous cast just can’t be asked to keep making this look watchable.
I’d like to see Rob on something edgy/cable/yes a comedy would be great.
Dream role someone beat me to it. Congressman Sam Seaborn!
And back to being a Democrat.
As much as I have loved seeing Rob each week (well not some weeks as he’s MIA) and thought he had a lot of chemistry with Flockhart, Rhys, and some of the other actors (although way too late in getting to see him with the rest of the family) I say hooray!
I don’t have to watch this anymore and like a Republican Senator.
Mr. Lowe I’ll follow you anywhere.
Just don’t be MIA for too long. Some of us can’t take it.
I truly enjoy Brothers and Sisters. I hate to see Rob Lowe leave the show. It’s a really good cast. Keep Rob Lowe if you can. Please. Also, keep Kitty and Rob Lowe married to each other.
Like most soap type shows, this one is straying from the original concept. The focus was on “family,” however, the family is falling apart via exits by Getty and Lowe. Enter another iligement child, who has already exited. After he donated bone marrow to Kitty, Ryan disappeared off the canvas. There are too many changes and this is one of my favorite shows!
I would like to see Nora get some backbone and stick it to Holly, big time. Nora is just to nice sometimes.
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I love him on the show! I don’t have faith/confidence that he will be able to carry his own show though – but I will stay tuned either way.
i’ll admit that i was anxious for him to leave the series when he was an absentee husband and father, but then he seemed to redeem himself.
I wouldn’t blame him if he was unsatisfied with the writing but I don’t think he is underutilized. He gets good screentime for a characer on an ensemble drama.
I’m sick of the whole show – Nora is enough to make me seriously consider matricide. Too many great characters and great actors and actresses, and apparently no ability to write anymore. Jon Tenney was the best thing to happen this season, and that was over too quickly. I’m pretty sure I’m breaking up with this show!!
I just don’t get the whole Brothers & Sisters thing. They are always complaining about their mother who only loves them and helps them in whatever way she can. They make fun of their family dinners which most people would love. They seem to have unlimited money even finding it anew when they lose it. But most of all, what real woman would lose Gilles Marini because he’s too good to be true?
this is one of the worst written shows in recent memory. Foolish plot lines which are all over the map!!! What a waste of incredible actors. Another case of unfulfilled potential.
I love this show and would hate to see him leave. Now Kitty is getting better and considering running for office how are they going to play this. This is not good timing.
he is the reason why i m wacthing this show
I love B&S but I will not continue to watch the show if Rob Lowe leaves! What a shame!
I think it’s a great show and I love the rollercoaster ride they have every week. I don’t lie change and would love rob lowe to stay.
