I've just learned that Taylor Lautner is now being paid per ab. That's right, the 17-year-old co-star of the Twilight Saga franchise who's famous for his buff physique that is making girls scream when he takes off his shirt in New Moon, is getting $7.5 million for his next pic. It's called Northern Lights, to be directed by John Moore (Max Payne) with a start date of April 1st. The logline says the pic is "set against the backdrop of extreme flying and follows four young pilots as they compete against the world’s best". It's being made by David Ellison's new company Skydance Productions, and Paramount has a first look at his development. That shitload of money negotiated by WME now makes Taylor Lautner into the highest paid Hollywood teenage actor around. (I'm told that neither Zac Efron nor Miley Cyrus have ever gotten a salary even close to that for their films. Amazing!) So the question is whether Paramount, which is in the Taylor Lautner business in a big way with the recently announced Max Steel, will pony up an even huger salary for the teen who'll be starring as the title lead in their own upcoming blockbuster. This may be the only movie that makes Tom Cruise fun to see again… sounds like he may get to jump on a couch or two.

I think he’s doing well. He did have stuff out before Twilight people. He played Shark Boy when he was younger and he was in the Cheaper by the Dozen movies. He’s doing something with his life that’s productive and not being stupid about his fame as of yet. I say Go you Taylor! Bravo.

You are right, but pay for up and coming actors may be based on studio perception and hype rather than box office reality.
I took this course once taught by an agency business affairs executive (one of the top 3), and, he recounted a story about how agents negotiates an extra 2 million dollars for this up and coming star based on how much a focus group loved him in an as yet unreleased movie.
To me, this was insane because the unreleased movie had not yet made any money. The business affairs executive explained that the key is having the studio execs buy into the hype about value. The movie went on to do okay box office, but nothing spectacular. The actor went onto have a great TV, but not film career.
For me, the story provided a moment of clarification. There is no business decision making involved as much as buying into the right hype.

He was awful in New Moon. True, the abs have good tonal definition, but he has kind of a down’s syndrome face. The Twilight association will make his name mud with male audiences, and he’ll probably only do PG-13 action movies so as not to exclude his young girl fan throng from admittance. Too much, too soon. He has the whiff of a guy who’s being built up so quickly that a fall will be unavoidable. It’s a sad illustration of how the industry is no longer able to create new superstars that a nonentity like this is being looked at as a meal ticket in the making.
Totally agree with you. His audience is young girls. Boys will not go for him because of the overhyped girl followers. Tom Cruise appealed to boys and girls from his early films and his career progression made sense.
Paramount’s going all in on this kid and I think it will be a big miss for the studio. Nothing I’ve seen of him feels like he’s ready to carry a movie.
Think back to the early times you saw Cruise (like in Taps), Penn or Depp and Dicaprio…their talent jumped off the screen at you. Even Matt Damon playing the villain in School Ties made you realize the actor was to be noticed.

ok listen here dont be putting down the New kids on the block they are still around or should i say have made a great come back i took my oldest child now 28 to see them when she was like 8 and i went too and now my 19 year old is into them because she was raised around the music from her sister she has gone to alot of vip concerts with them and she still likes them as a matter of fact she is going to see joey this month in detroit. Im older and ill tell you what new kids worked very hard back then they played their own instruments and trained for many hours to get their steps right and they did a wonderful job of it too and they are still doing a great job of entertaining the crowds so dont compare Taylor or Robert to them its not right they are two different eras but they were young and had great bodies then too and still do. I LOVE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK and i LOVE THE TWILIGHT SERIES TOO so get off it i might be old but theres talent there for sure.

JJ, I know his trainer, the kid did not take any steroids, he worked out for about 4 hours everyday to get those abs. You don’t need steroids to get buff nowadays with all the health info about which foods have the most protein, etc. Why is it that out of shape bitter guys always say that buff gays are on roids ? I think Lautner is a nice kid but when I read that Rolling Stone cover story on him a little over a month ago, one word came to mind: V-A-P-I-D. He’s the male equivalent of the proverbial dumb blonde.

As far as proving themselves – certainly as an actor, Kristen Stewart has proven it time and time again. Great in Adventureland and Into The Wild and some of her earlier stuff. She’s here to stay – not sure if she’s a movie star – but a solid actress… but who really is these days? Bullock (only this year and no one could have predicted that – a lot of people passed on Blind Side and Proposal was a direct to video movie that somehow hit home with a large fan base). Heigl (not sure why, her movies stink but keep making a lot of money)….anyone else? Reese possibly…. Aniston? The list gets small awfully quick. So forget about movie stars – just simply proving herself as an actress I think KS passes with flying colors.
Pattinson is a star. The scripts that had been going to Leo and Pitt will start to go to him now. It’s all about access to the right directors and the right script.

4 years ago I had a comedy being put together and the studios were all looking for the next wave….this was pre Knocked-Up. The Carrey’s, Vaughn’s were getting too expensive and tiring. The list was Rogen, Rudd, Bateman, Zach Braff, Dax Sheppard, Will Arnett, maybe Jason Segel but I don’t think he was even on it….and a few others clearly not even worth mentioning….
Well 4 years later – Rudd, Rogen, Segel….the rest, no matter how good they are individually, you can’t build a movie around them as they are not box office draws.
Studios have already moved on to testing out Zach Gal., B. Cooper and Ed Helms from the success of Hangover. I don’t see any of them as opening weekend draws in a few years. Zach possibly if he takes over the Jack Black business.
And yes, Anna Kendrick is awesome and proving herself as a great actress.
Most of the above can prove themselves as actors – but the “star” definition is really becoming cloudy with the explosion of the “celebrity”. Opening weekend is still the only test of who can pack them in by simply being in the film.

Kristen Stewart can NOT act. At all. All she does is blink a lot and run her hand through her hair. Oh and mutter. I watch Twilight as a guilty pleasure but I couldn’t even try to say the acting is good. None of the main characters are very good actors but that’s not what the franchise is about.

Too much money for an un-proven talent that does not appear to have
staying power. He needs an education so he will have something to fall back on. Otherwise, he will roam around hollywood making zero contributions to society like Lohan, Hilton, and others who are uneducated spoiled members of the universe.
To be fair, Lohan is a case of talent squandered. She showed all the promise in the world as an actor in her youth and then succumbed to a tabloid abyss. Every time you see her now in a desperate bid for paparazzi attention, it’s a sad reminder of what could’ve been with her career.
I blame that on her parents and the fact that they are just out to ride her coattails.

Hollywood is filled with bad actors who get paid a lot of money to entertain the public. Taylor Lautner is only 17 years old and does a good job in his roles. He is a good kid who worked hard to keep his role on Twilight and appears to be a good role-model for children (no whorish behavior, no drugs, no alcohol, and nice personality). I rather see him make money than half the losers in Hollywood.
You men complaining about his body..maybe if you would get off the couch with your beer belly and work as hard as he does on his body you wouldn’t feel the need to attack him out of spite. You don’t have to think he is good-looking, there are plenty of women who do.
The other two ’stars’ of the Twilight series are out whining about being famous and being dumb enough to be photoed getting stoned. Is it any wonder they went to the bullpen to find talent to sign?
RE: The body. Elisabeth, getting that build when you are in your late teens is easy. Half the guys I played high school sports were built like that. Mid twenties it starts to become a major hobby to stay in that shape and once you get into the mid-thirties it is a part time job. Me, I am happy not to have a gut hanging over my belt and to have only gone up one pants size in the 20 years since I was his age, to heck with trying for the six pack anymore.
This is probably the only post worth reading here. It makes a lot of sense. I didn’t care for “Twilight” or “New Moon”, but it made Taylor into a star. He was probably the most photographed person of 2009, appearing on more covers than any other, including “Entertainment Weekly”, “Rolling Stone”, “Teen Vogue”, “Men’s Health”, not to mention dozens of movie mags. He should be rewarded for his success. Even if you don’t like the movies, give him credit for making the most of his career and working hard to keep it. The post is right, most of the complaints here likely come from overweight couch potatoes who would only know a six pack if they were drinking it.
Worked hard? He’s 17. He’s being paid for luck and genetics. And like all others before him, he will make this film and peter out because he’ll never be motivated to have any talent. Hollywood always gives too much too soon.

Welcome to a world outside of fawning Twilight fansites. I don’t care if he’s a nice kid or if some pedos think he’s hot. In a business sense, this is a poor decision to pay that much to someone who is untested both in talent and audience interest, especially when you have a headliner like Tom Cruise (even if TC has his own set of problems right now).
And I don’t think TL is making good choices. He seems only interested in action flicks (outside Valentine’s Day which still features his athleticism apparently) and that isn’t a good way to build a career unless he just wants to be the next Jason Statham.

Personally I hate the TWILIGHT franchise, but he’s got a better professional reputation than most teenage brats and he has a SICK martial arts background that guarantees him as the next great action star. Umm, The Impact, How To Be wasn’t released in theaters. How do you know it was a bomb? It was released on IFC Direct, and on DVD recently. Little Ashes opened to 12 theaters. Not exactly a wide release. lol Give Pattinson a break. He made those before Twilight.
Congradulations! I often said when I first saw Taylor’s interviews and his Martial Arts performances that he could be the next action star. I’m not about to say he’s the greatest actor on the planet but I wouldn’t neccesarily call the very successful Tom Cruise that either. Tom got by on his looks, carisma, determination, and work ethic. Taylor too has all these qualities. I still can’t get over the similarities between the two.
New Moon is doing for Taylor what Risky Bussiness did for Tom. I find it ironic that Tom Cruise really took off after Top Gun and now he is producing a movie about fighter jets with Taylor that might just give him longevity in Hollywood. Or he might crash and burn. lol
New Moon made Taylor a global star. And if he is getting this kind of money then he deserves it. It couldn’t happen to a nicer person. Some people were born to be entertainers wether it be martial arts or acting I’m glad it paid off for him. It has been fun watching him develope over the years and this makes me proud to be a Taylor fan.

I think it’s kind of ironic that the same girls who will readily spew hatred on actresses like Jessica Alba and Megan Fox – who basically get paid to look hot and be scantily-clad – have no problem saying that Taylor deserves the $ because “he’s hot.”

From what I gather from reading this article is all this is another variation of Taylor Lautner playing a younger version of Tom Cruise in “Top Gun” again which at the time was Tom Cruise’s breakout movie role and people started to take notice. But the thing is that I saw “Top Gun” tolerating his foolish grin at the time which is why I don’t need to see this movie- this movie only applies to the new generation of young teenage girls who Lautner has struck cords with when he was starring in “New Moon”. And I think that the plot is 100 % unrealistic to have a storyline involving an already gifted 17 year old aerobatics pilot springing from a wealthy family getting hooked up with the most desired female pilot who also happens to be gifted as well is like Hollywood in real life in itself. And at the same time as I was reading this, it reminded me of something that the uproar Prince Williams had caused in real life with the helicopter wasting England’s people of tax-payers money to impress his girlfriend Kate Middleton, with the Queen making bullsh-t excuses on why he did it. What is even more stupid is that I cannot even relate to the Lautner’s character in real life since the plot says that he’s going to be from a wealthy family – what kind of life lessons can this movie were to offer. A 17 year old who’s already “gifted” from a wealthy family who happens to have a great knack for flying planes to me seems self indulgent, you would think this movie takes place during WWII or something. If I had any kids thinking about watching this film, I would persuade them from watching this by getting them to watch “Top Gun” first. And if they still want to watch this recycled rehash they would call a plot, the only thing I can say is that I did my best.
I hope this is a good investment for Tom Cruise and his company because this is another person whose not going to be suckered in to watch this turd they would call a story.

It will be funny if Sharkboy will be the “Harrison Ford of Twilight”. Remember pretty boy Luke… Girls went wild for his Star Wars prettiness… And he simply vanished after Star Wars were over. Didn’t have the talent to play in other movies. That’s Robert Pattinson. Who I suspect will just vanish when they’ll release the 4 book-movie. Of course he may play in those small budget movies like Little Ashes and Remember me. But those movies will get some 8 million at the box-office or will have the trouble with wide release at all. Or he can even get some supporting role in the big movie like Orlando Bloom had. But after the bomb of his own roles like Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown it all went down. He doesn’t have the talent and can’t carry a movie. Where is Orly now?
The Pattinson’s problem is that even with his huge “Edward popularity” – it doesn’t transform to box-office numbers for his other films. We all remember Dicaprio’s Man in the Iron Mask. It was released when Titinac was still in the box-office. When whole world was crazy about Leo. And it bombed. Leo’s popularity couldn’t help because movie was bad. The same with Pattinson. And producers know it. They won’t hire him in the lead role in big movie. The same with Lea. That’s modern Kristen Stuart. Will forever be in people’s mind as Bella. No matter what role she will play.
And with all this roles Wolfboy could become the modern Harrison Ford. Harrison is not a good actor. Almost always looks the same in his movies. But he became major Hollywood superstar. With lots of big movies. No one associates him with Han Solo. He is just Harrison Ford. In some years people may even forget that Lautner played role in Twilight. He will be just Taylor Lautner. And God – I wish for that to happen. Because I can’t stand that overhype around Twilight. And the obsession over Edward. It will be such fun if Sharkboy, who as we remember had to actually WORK and FIGHT for his role unlike those other two and was labeled often as ugly even by the saga fans – will eventually be the most successful actor outside the Twilight.
Although I am a RP fan….Taylor overall will do well for himself – I say “kudos” to him and his agent. He will be great in action type movies – we need some new young blood in Hollywood. Who wants to continue watching the same old, tired actors in action type movies?
Regardless of what everyone else has posted – he has a very strong fan base. It will continue to grow…Taylor will do well.

why are actors different than athletes?
My son started working out seriously at 16. He lives a clean and healthy lifestyle and is extremely dedicated to his muscular development. He does takes protein supplements and watches his dietary intake constantly. My son has an incredible build. It took TIME and DEDICATION. NO one builds 30 lbs. of muscle in a few months without steriods. That is fact. It is not a good message to send the young male populace. It is not a quick trick. His parents allowed “trainers” to play doctor.
As far as making it so far up the star ladder. There are a lot, I emphasize LOT of dedicated actors…..he is one very lucky one to have received the breaks he did.
Taylor has been working out since he was like 5 years old!
He had a six-pack by age 9 while training for martial arts competitions. Those pictures are all on-line. He was a World martial arts CHAMPION by age 12. He as been a WORLD CLASS athlete his entire life. Far cry from your son who just started seriously working out at age 16.
Taylor was on a very STRICT diet. He even prepared food and carried it with him throughout the day so that he stuck to the diet and then went to the gym daily. He ended up working out so much that he kept losing too much weight and had to cut down on gym time to 5 days a week. The kid has been a disciplined athlete his entire life and his entire job was to shape up for the role. He is no longer in high school and doesn’t have other responsibilities like a regular kid.
Don’t start accusing him of using steroids without some facts to back up your case. Just because your son is not like him is no excuse.

This guy puts the “ab” in “abnormal.” His body is a little overdone for his age and I think he could end up having severe health problems in just a few years. What’s amazing is this kid has zero charisma. His voice is horrible and his presence, going back to Sharkboy, is cold and forced. Film is not the medium for his talents; the dinosaur know as daytime television is.
Paramount will drop a few hundred million into this kid and once the flops start lining up we’ll see another serious turnover at that studio.

First of all, can we all at least try to have proper grammar? It’s quite painful to read posts that don’t flow or have correct spelling.
It seems that the main arguments are:
Steroids- Did he take them, could he have gotten this fit without them, was his prepared food and trainer enough, etc. Unless you are a trainer or medical doctor, there is no way to know for sure. Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t.
Talent- Is he a good actor, or he just good at looking good? Everyone has different opinions, so he cannot be a “good” actor or a “bad” actor. We’ll have to see how he does in his other movies to be able to know for sure.
Money- Is Taylor worth $7.5 million? On one side, it is not certain that he can carry a movie outside of the Twilight movies, but on the other hand, he has a huge fan base of teen girls. While this movie might not need Taylor to do well, as Tom Cruise is still a popular actor, Lautner’s presence will give the movie an additional support base. This is similar to the way that Daniel Radcliffe brought “Equus” a whole new audience of teenage girls, who would not have gone out of their way to see the play if Radcliffe had not been in it.
