The list of young actors who transition to adult leading men isn’t that long… Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Christian Bale, etc. Zac Efron is hoping to make that transition so he’s linked himself to a pair of projects he hopes will give him the chance to broaden his range. One of them would be his first action turn, in a Ludlum-esque spy thriller. Efron has a just made a deal at Universal for Fire, an adaptation of a graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis that was published by Image Comics.
The plan is for Efron to play a college student who is recruited by the CIA, only to find that he has been trained for a program that creates expendable agents. Bendis, the fanboy favorite whose comic book creations include “Ultimate Spider-Man”, will write the script. While little material moves during Sundance, Efron and Bendis got the deal after they schlepped around to three studios, pitching the project on a rainy day last Friday. The project has the steady hand of Neal Moritz, who’ll produce with Circle of Confusion’s David Engel. Efron and Alchemy Entertainment’s Jason Barrett will be exec producers.
Efron has made a separate deal at Warner Bros to star in a Back To The Future-like film that melds two projects. One’s a pitch from writers Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski, and the other is a WB project called Algorithm that the studio was already developing. Nick Stoller, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall director who just wrapped Get Him To The Greek, will produce along with Mark Gordon and Bryan Zuriff. Alan Riche is exec producer along with Efron and Barrett.
Efron’s quest to be taken seriously, and to shed the teen heartthrob label thrust upon him after a trio of hit High School Musical films, really began when he bailed on a Footloose remake to instead re-team with his 17 Again director Burr Steers in The Death And Life Of Charlie St. Cloud, playing a young man who carries the guilt over the death of his younger brother. It isn’t easy, as one of the films he made recently, Me and Orson Welles, was barely seen. But he wasn’t looking for box office as much as the chance to be part of a strong cast in an art film. Good for him.

Wow, Zac is getting into producing his own projects. That’s a cool idea…but what, Hollywood is afraid to bet on him being that he has the High School Musical flush upon him. Hmmm, it will be interesting to hear more details on these projects.
Here’s the truth. He’s too light to be a heavy lead. TV brother. TV.
Thank you.
does the name Johnny depp ring a bell?
You mean Kirk Cameron? That rings a bell when you mention Efron. He also did a film called Like Father Like Son — very similar to 17 Again. Then, he tried to branch out with more dramatic work like Listen To Me. If you don’t remember of any of those films — don’t worry, you won’t remember any of Efron’s either.
Johnny Depp is hardly light.
I don’t think you can compare Depp in his TV days to Efron in his TV days to be honest. It’s like lemons and pommegranites
What does that even mean? He’s too light, so he should stick with TV. Its sad to see jealous people on message boards critique these stars. Yes he is 22 and is about to become a big movie star. Sorry you are NOT one.
word.
He is one of the most grounded, focused, hard working people out there. You haters are pathetic
I’d withhold that comment until seeing CHARLIE ST CLOUD
Nice to see a young actor not just going for easy and expected. Good for him is right. And good for Bendis too.
I like Zac Efron and appreciate that he is taking on differnt roles, but you need to have some hit films as well that people have seen — for every 17 again, there can me an Orson Welles, so I hope he finds a balance, otherwise he may lose his fanbase all together.
Me and Orson Welles is an amazing film. It could have been a big hit if acquisition executives would do their jobs correctly. That movie played as well as any film I saw last year.
REALLY wonderful film that was seen by too few. I’ve never seen any of his “high school musical” movies but caught him in a few things since those days and I thought he had a lot of talent.
Excellent, let the kid make a $24M project. His peers will pay for it @$8 each for $70M+ (I think as of now).
cut the hair
He already did, many months ago dude.
Oh they all dream to become Leo DiCaprio. The difference is that DiCaprio immediately cut off his Titanic hair and started to choose different roles. And was an Oscar nominated actor before his teen fame. While Efron only become famous for his hair obsession looks and zillion appearances for the paparazzi. But kudos for trying. DiCaprio told him to lay off if he wants to be taken seriously and we finally were free from his daily paparazzi appearances. He cut his ridiculous hair and tries to chose different roles. But I don’t see him as lead in normal serious movie. I don’t think he can act. All his 17 again, Musical, Osron Welles were pretty similar characters. I can’t see him turning like Tobey Maguire in Brothers or Heath Ledger in Brockback or even like DiCaprio in Gangs of New York. He will always be that sweet boy.
17 Again was a different role. Sure it had basketball but he was playing a 37 yr old dad, very different than a high schooler probably as different as anyone would let him get. And he did well.
I say give Zac some time. He didn’t choose to get famous the way he did, it just happened and now he’s working his ass off to make the most of it unlike a lot of the celebutard actors in Hollywood.
DiCaprio also had an Oscar nomination to his credit even before he made “Titanic.”
I don’t think Efron will make it as a leading man, because I don’t think guys will take him seriously. His very status as teen heart-throb is a turn-off.
Which brings to mind the serious shortage of leading men, and particularly young leading men. There seems to be almost no one around who can believably take a punch onscreen, and dish one out back. Who embodies toughness, endurance, self-control, and masculine grace. Pretty-boy poutiness, and killer abs, yes. But not toughness.
Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, Stallone, the rest of the superannuated 80′s guys, are still doing action movies because the younger field is so weak.
but can Mel, Bruce and Stallone still bring people into the theater to watch their films? They need the action gimic. Any actor could have a hit in those kinds of roles.
Zac is a more viable option to make it than Pattison and Lautner. People like him for who he is…not the character he plays.
very true. wahlberg was meant to fill the void but he never really panned out.
Don’t we already have Alden Ehrenreich, Emile Hirsh, Sam Riley, Anton Yelchin, and Nicholas Hoult for actually good young male roles?
what makes anyone think 11 year old girls will follow Efron to serious roles? He will give Shia Lebouf a run for his money in the race of who i want to never see again
I think his career will be the most interesting to watch as well. Ive read some people compare him to Leo dicaprio but i’ll go with Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt like Zac Efron is not a good actor but he has the(blind, delusional) female vote crying about how good his acting is.
Young Pitt was great in “Kalifornia” and “Thelma and Louise.” Don’t sink a young artist with B.O. and fan expectations – give ‘em time. Mark Wahlberg, anyone?
that’s great!!! it only proves that he really want to learn more, do more and prove to everybody that he is really an actor by heart and soul… I’m sure he will do a great job again… GOD SPEED, good luck=)
Just for the record- he’s a good guy..and not
afraid to get dirty.
He’s basically going to be Jared Leto. I don’t think he’ll be a major leading man but he will work well into his 30′s without a problem.
As for Johnny Depp, he was acting in movies even before Jump St and has hall of fame range that cannot be taught.
And How is a graphic novel adaptation a chance to be regarded more seriously?
Zac Efron is a likeable guy. As a lead actor people must like you. Nobody wants a jerk trying to play the good guy. Does he have the chops like Di Caprio? Not yet or maybe never. But remember his whole maturation process came to a halt(for the most part) as soon as he broke with Musical(by that I mean no one grows from adoration -but rejection–and there’s no suffering in getting any girl you want) Having said that he’s made an effort to grow by taking a variety of rolls. Kudos. So why should we be hard on this guy? Because of his haircut and good looks? I remind you, Hollywood, of King David and tens of thousands of women admiring him and his great looks….and, oh yeah, and thanks to him there happens to be a few Hebrews in Hollywood!
I actually liked him in 17 Again – he’s light, sure, but he was appealing, honest and multi-talented. Kudos to him for challenging himself to dig deeper. I wouldn’t be surprised if, as he matures, he shows us many other colors and widens his range. He may not be another Johnny Depp, but at least he’s willing to push himself to see how far he can go.
Oh, great, another one or two wasted projects/opportunities can be used onto other talented young male actors. Tell me again why we need another bland facial expression actor(I use that seriously loosely), again?
He can sing, he can dance……Hmmmm…wait, I’m still thinking…
Now, joke aside, when he tries to act, his eyes are empty — no contents, no intensive emotion. Maybe that’s because he is too young and not experiencing serious life yet?
Don’t know and after this comment don’t care either.
with writers like Jakubowski and Kalpin I think this movie will smoke. Better than GWTW meets Wizard of Oz with a little Flintstones thrown in. Outcome should blow your mind, much like chick in line in Arlo Guthrie song, and we aren’t even carrying K’s. I predict it will be bigger than Avatar (and not so blue). Cameron better watch himself as these writers will be hotter than Tiger Woods jock strap……
I agree, his career will be very interesting to watch. Unfortunately something tells me Zac’s going to have a tough time generating a new fan base.
He is not Leo and he is not Brad Pitt. Both of them are actually very, very good actors at times. I like Efron, but to me he’s not believable as an “action hero”, at least not right now. He needs to work on the actual craft if he wants to survive.
The guy’s only 22, and it still looks like he popped out of GAP campaign. Maybe in a few years after picking some smart roles he’ll be able to transition into films EVERYONE will go see…not just 12 year old girls and musical junkies.
At least he’s not selling out for paychecks.
Damn. The haters are out today. Sure, the guy is pretty boy, but that’s not his fault. He won the lottery thanks to Disney and now wants to stop doing schlocky movies were he has to cringe at every line-reading. Can you blame him? Just because he makes tweens swoon doesn’t make him a bad guy. Next Brad Pitt? Leo Dicaprio? No, but come on… Give the kid a break. Good for him for at least making an attempt at being taken seriously.
The great actors were created by great directors, great writers and great crews. Put the kid in with the best and then we’ll see.
its obvious that he’s losing momentum. look at taylor lautner. he parlayed the twilight franchise into a $7.5 million payday and a bunch of choice scripts. zac is losing steam by the day and his agent and managers know this. they are scrambling to get him attached to anything, but the studios have already moved on. he was smart to align himself with leo, but the difference all along (as noted by others) is that leo can act, and zac cant. and from what i hear, leo found that out long ago and took the meeting as a courtesy and nothing else. pretty is good, but pretty is not long term.
That alignment with Leo is more than just a courtesy meeting. It’s a matter of time and timing.
Why is it “hate” to merely point out the truth?
We all know that Disney actors are cast for their ability to get their young audiences to consider the actors as friends, not for their acting acumen. The teenage Efron, with his pixieish haircut, wan pretty-boy looks and blank-slate persona, was perfect for what The Mouse needed to make the cash cow produce.
My personal opinion is that Efron should take a page from the Jodie Foster book and go to college; hone his craft (as it were), and get some grounding in the non-Hollywood world. Maybe also do some modeling on the side to keep his face before the public while he’s in school.
Otherwise, Efron should just take the short-cut to a Shane West-type career situation. It’ll save him, and us, a lot of wasted effort.
