Women ruled at the DGA tonight for top honors in both film and TV drama direction. The DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film has traditionally been one of the Industry’s most accurate barometers for the Best Director Academy Award. Only 6 times since the DGA Awards began in 1948 has the Feature Film winner not gone on to win the Oscar. But tonight’s honor for The Hurt Locker‘s helmer Kathryn Bigelow is the first DGA win not just for her but the first for any female film director.
Her team on the 2009 Summit Entertainment consisted of Unit Production Manager Tony Mark, First Assistant Director David Ticotin, and First Assistant Director (Canadian Unit) Lee Cleary. Bigelow beat out Precious‘ Lee Daniels, Up In The Air‘s Jason Reitman, Inglourious Basterds‘ Quentin Tarantino, and, most surprising of all, her ex, Avatar‘s James Cameron. Bigelow, who was only the 7th female to be nominated for the DGA award, was quoted as saying, “This is the most incredible moment of my life.”
Norman Jewison reeceived the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award, while Disney’s Bob Iger and Warner Bros’ Barry Meyer were given the 2010 Honorary Life Membership Awards.
Other DGA winners were:
Documentary: Louie Psihoyos for The Cove (Oceanic Preservation Society
and Roadside Attractions)
TV drama series: Lesli Linka Glatter for “Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency” episode of Mad Men (AMC). Directorial Team: Unit Production Manager Dwayne Shattuck, First Assistant Director Adam Ben Frank, Second Assistant Director Jessica L. Lowrey, Second Second Assistant Director Elion S. Olson.
TV movie: Ross Katz for Taking Chance (HBO). Directorial Team: Unit Production Manager Lori Keith Douglas, First Assistant Director Robert C. Albertell, Second Assistant Director Vanessa Hoffman, Assistant Unit Production Manager Carla Raij, Second Second Assistant Director Brendan Walsh
TV comedy series: Jason Winer for the pilot of Modern Family (ABC). Directorial Team: Unit Production Manager Howard Griffith, First Assistant Director Lisa Statman, Second Assistant Director Helena Lamb, Second Second Assistant Director Shannon Speaker.

Gelfand, Lori Margules; Stage Managers Arthur E. Lewis, Dency L. Nelson, Douglas P. Smith, Tammy Raab, Douglas M. Fogel, Jeffrey Pearl, Lauren Schneider, Karen T. Weiss, Chris Hines, Elise Reaves

Reality TV: Craig Borders for Build It Bigger Season 3: Hong Kong Bridge (Discovery Science)
Children’s programming: Allison Liddi-Brown for Princess Protection Program (Disney Channel). Directorial Team: Unit Production Manager Carlos Anibal Vázquez; First Assistant Director José Gilberto Molinari-Rosaly; Second Assistant Director Colleen Comer

Bout time a woman won! Congrats, Kathryn!
It may be a man’s world but if we fight they will let us in. Congrats, Kathryn Bigelow! You never gave up, you kept doing the work. Get that Oscar too. You deserve it.
A very well deserved win. Hopefully The Hurt Locker can stop the Avatar juggernaut from steamrolling over the Oscars.
Interesting. Congrats to Bigelow. I still don’t see The Hurt Locker winning the Academy Awards though. It would be the most anti-climactic Oscars ever if that happened. The awards are sure to get their biggest ratings in years with movies like Avatar and D9 possibly up for contention. The Hurt Locker would be the lowest grosser of all time to win the award, and most likely the 1st money loser to ever win when you factor in the incredibly expensive Oscar campaign.
In other words-
James Cameron/Avatar: $2,000,000,000+ worldwide, critical and global appeal, and Golden Globes for BP and BD.
The Hurt Locker: seen by 3 people and a gerbil
Somewhere, James Cameron doesn’t give a crap whether he wins the Oscars or not.
So if he does win I’m sure he won’t grace us with a ten minute speech in the Na’vi language about how now we’re all family. Yeah, Cameron doesn’t care. Pfft.
And the Oscars are, at least in theory, supposed to reward the best film, not the highest grossing.
Reading Comprehension Fail. I didn’t say Avatar should win because it made the most money. I’m saying James Cameron doesn’t care because he has more money than God, and his film has universal (or global) approval from audiences. Stop treating the Avatar fans like we’re stupid or “beneath you” because of you’re wine sipping classier taste in Sundance-type indie films.
Cheerio.
so I see Oscars should only be given to the mega-rich & mega -poopular movies & their associated personnel?
thank goodness the Academy hasnt followed that strategy in the past or many an oscar would be given to less deserving.
…and for all of the “cameron doesnt give a crap about oscar” statements….his shills would be acting as if his movie is great BECAUSE it RECEIVED an OSCAR.
You cant have your cake & eat it to cameron fans….which is it?
oh and it would be oh so poetic justice, almost like a cameron Titanic romance drama, FOR HIS EX TO BEAT HIM FOR THE OSCAR IN DIRECTOR & BEST PICTURE CATEGORIES.
The avataristas would puke all over themselves from the fright & horror
cheers folks and be careful what you wish for.
First of all sir, you should return to wherever you went to school and ask for your money back. Horrifying to read your writing. By the way, Cameron has stated on multiple occasions that he wouldn’t mind losing to Bigelow because they are good friends. As a matter of fact, all you pretentious Hurt Locker fans are probably unaware that Bigelow only ended up directing the film because James urged her to direct it in the first place. In the ultimate scheme of things, neither Cameron, nor I, really care whether Avatar wins or not, because it already has all the praise it needs from critics and regular movie-going citizens worldwide.
Lolz you think Avatar has critical praise? Not compared to the Hurt Locker dummy. Plus those 3 people and a gerbil all have better taste than the fucktards that thought Avatar was original. The Hurt Locker FTW Best Film/Best Director/Best Actor.
Hurt Locker is making money on DVD so it won`t be the lowest grossing winner (save for boxffice take). And it will win because the Academy won`t give it to science fiction movie no matter how much it makes (ROTK was an exception because it was the third of back to back movies based on the prestigeous book of the century).
It`s Star Wars/Annie Hall all over again. Avatar will take all the techs and Hurt Locker all majors.
But I agree that Cameorn doesn`t care if he wins or not. He`s been openly rooting and supporting Bigelow and said he already had “one of those damn statues” and that she deserves to win and that female directors should win.
Yesssssss. Go Kathryn! I’ve always been a huge fan of her poetic, gutsy style, ever a thing of beauty.
I would venture that Cameron does give a damn, his ego is that big. He’s already opened his mouth to take credit for giving her her start, and he’ll act like the proud papa/overseer if she wins, in effect being subtly condescending. If she were to thank him in his acceptance speech, I would buy it. Has she done so yet?
The guy is so vainglorious that he had to remind us of how he was supporting her talent from Day One. Because, you should know, um…really…it’s all about him.
It’s nice to know someone out there understands what really matters about a film: not its quality, but how much money it makes for its studio.
Sheez.
Could your post be anymore pretentious? Or badly written for that matter? I suppose it’s fun to be pretentious and look down upon people who enjoyed Avatar (and there are many of them by the way). Your post reeks of Sundance-going-wine sipping-cigar smoking-I’m cooler than everyone else because I like indies assholery. And as for your “Kathryn is better and Bigelow than ever”, that couldn’t be more true because all her other films were tremendous flops. Even the Hurt Locker with its juggernaut $15 million worldwide spells out how most people globally weren’t interested. Or are you going to go into another rant about how the few of you out there were the only ones who truly “got” the movie, while everyone else (escapist drivel goers in your language) went and saw Avatar?
Dollars to doughnuts, she makes no attempt to feminize her Oscar acceptance speech in the now-likely event of her winning. She’s not going to pull any Halle Berry histrionics of tearfully boasting about the symbolism of a door being opened. She’s been annoyed her entire career that her gender gets obsessed about within the media just because the content of her films happens to be brawny. If she had a nickel for every time a hack journalist brought this up to her, she probably could’ve financed Avatar all by herself. I’m not as fascinated by Hurt Locker as everyone else, but I’ve been a fans of hers ever since Near Dark, and seeing her get recognition on this scale would be a joyous development for me. Even if Cameron wins, I have a feeling he’d do the classy thing and make a gift of the award to her right there at the podium out of penance for his self-adulating Titanic acceptance speech, not to mention for destroying their marriage with his adulterous ways.
I agree, Hurt Locker is a mediocre little movie destined for the $2 bin but acknowledging Bigelow’s earlier work with this award is fine with me. I suspect this means Bigelow gets the Oscar for direction and Avatar get’s Best Picture (which is peculiar as virtually everyone in Hollywood was staggered by Cameron’s accomplishment and impact on the industry).
Halle Berry’s speech was not “histrionic.” She was the first black woman to win her industry’s most prestigious award. I can imagine how that would be an overwhelming experience. You are clearly not a member of a marginalized group, otherwise you would’ve recognized this obvious point. Moreover, many people become emotional when winning an award. I guess it’s just a problem when it’s a black person.
HOORAY FOR KATHRYN BIGELOW! I feel so much joy for her artistic achievement and that she’s getting the recognition she deserves.
Hazah!!!!
JohnDoe, Avater fanboy.
Bitter much?
This film was fantastic and she deserves it. I don’t care that the world didn’t see it. Hopefully, when they are sitting and watching her win her oscar, they will realize they should add it to their netflix queue. What I find so fascinating is that some scenes in the film, such as when the soldiers are roughhousing in the barracks, are so foreign and unsympathetic to many women. Her ability to direct and capture those raw, testosterone-laden moments shows that she isn’t hindered by having a smaller brain. Yes that last part is a joke.
It’s annoying that those in this day and age who further the feminization of men are now going to climb aboard the “Ra Ra Bigelow, You Go Girl!” bandwagon because A.) None of them had even the slightest inkling of her existence prior to Hurt Locker becoming an award magnet, and B.) None of her films go the typical female director route this current societal climate fosters of castrating every man in sight.
Queen of the world!
A terrific director who finally has the breakout hit as well as the recognition she deserves. It’s about time.
golden globes 80 journalists.
dga 14,000 professional voters. pga, thousands of producers.
la film critics, ny film critics, broadcast critics choice awards, national film critics, etc… hurt locker won them all except the golden globes. hopefully next, best director and best film. and people are discovering the film now.
totally love kathryn bigelow. too bad the hurt locker’s world wide gross is barely 16M. guess nobody in the world is interested in the iraq war. the low gross could also be due to summit being clueless about how to sell a film that doesn’t have the word ‘twilight’ in it.
Well, the DGA join the PGA in lock-stepping themselves off a cliff. The wrong director and film won. Again. Hopefully the BAFTA’s will stem the bleeding.
Really liking this Bigelow transition to megapower.
The returning, avenging Shiva to Cameron’s Zeus fantasies
To Frederick and John Doe: you’re both jack-holes. Just deal with that fact and hopefully you’ll recover from your limited ways of thinking. Congrats to Bigelow, she deserves it.
At what point did I say that she didn’t deserve it? I simply stated that at this point, James Cameron ultimately is not staying up at night wondering if he’ll win the Oscar because his career hinges on it. Whereas Bigelow, who has never had a hit, would benefit greatly from the award.
CONGRATULATIONS to Kathryn Bigelow for such well-deserved recognition by her peers!! The Hurt Locker was brilliantly directed.
And CONGRATULATIONS to Lesli Linka Glatter for her DGA award for Mad Men!
Anvil! denied again for Best Doc.
How can those whales keep winning all the awards in this town? They’re not even gay or Jewish!
Cameron 19 – The Widowmaker
Hooray for the underdog. Being an indie filmmaker I admire anyone who can do much with less.
She is a phenomenal Director and she deserves the Oscar that I believe she will win. Even JC is pulling for her, from what I hear.
I am thrilled for Katherine on many levels.
She has perservered past less than amazing BO perf on her very specific previous films, she keeps getting her work made and seen.
She stood on her own with ‘Locker in a year where bigger [budget, BO, stars, personalities, buzz] seemed indeed better to a lot of movie-goers and critics.
She overcame the self-proclaimed ‘King of the World’ – and ex-husband, in a David/Goliath style victory – how’s that for sweet rewards?
She did, however unintentionally, inspire and raise the awareness of the plight of female directors, [ better late than almost never DGA - 48 years is a very long time to not have bestowed this award to a female director!]
Bravo, Katherine, bravo DGA, and bravo, Summit – they also hired Catherine Hardwicke…so regardless of the turn of Twilight events, they support women directors.
Rooting for ‘Locker at the Oscars!
it’s been 58 years, not 48. and summit kicked catherine hardwicke to the ground. yeah. way to support women directors. they also did a lousey job at selling the hurt locker. she’s selling herself at the moment.
Congrats to Kathryn Bigelow. In other news, it’s nice to see someone win an award other than 30 Rock. Modern Family is such a great show.
“The Hurt Locker”: Seen by three people and a gerbil.
“Avatar”: seen and loved by millions of people with the thought capacity of a gerbil.
Oh look, another asshole calling people (lots of them, millions in fact) stupid because he’s mad his favorite movie didn’t make as much as Avatar. Sir, stop being asinine. If the Hurt Locker had made $300 million dollars, and Avatar had flopped, you’d be showering us with how people truly appreciated the brilliance of The Hurt Locker and the stupidity of Avatar.
