NBC Universal has licensed the medical drama to 250 territories worldwide so far. But the show’s popularity in Europe is startling. In France, it averaged 9.3 million viewers per episode for broadcaster TF1 during its latest season – up 30% on the previous season. Last year, Italian channel Canale 5 averaged 4.7 million viewers when it showed House on Sunday nights. Germany was not far behind with 4.2 million viewers for broadcaster RTL. It’s also incredibly popular in Poland, where TV2 averaged 3.3 million viewers per episode, and in the Netherlands, where it averaged 793,000 for SBS6.
Television ratings analyst Mediametrie rated House the most popular U.S. import across 29 territories in 2008. And it looks set to do that again in 2009. Almost 72 million people outside of the U.S. watched the show’s most popular episode. House romped ahead of its closest rivals, CBS’ CSI: Las Vegas (57.7 million) and CSI: Miami (51.3 million). Other hit U.S. exports included Buena Vista’s Lost and Desperate Housewives. TV trade Television Business International predicts that Flash Forward and NCIS would make onto the 2009 list.
Mediametrie isn’t due to publish its 2009 data until June.

House rules the world! House and Cuddy forever!
And that could even be better if they put the episodes in the right order (on TF1), I am only partly joking: this show is good and popular which is amazing!
Hello VALERIE, it’ s already unbelivable but true that TF1 has been broadcating this exquisite show for several years with the overwhelming & multi- talented [ H ] UGH LAURIE ! It ‘ s enough even though the adequate translation has been often changed on this channel. [ H ]ugh rocks the
[ H]OUSE !!! Vive la Résistance !
Isn’t it true that HOUSE is super popular in Europe, except in the U.K.? At least thats what Hugh Laurie claimed sometime back. I guess those Brits are still mad that their best and brightest have to come over to America to actually make a serious living off their craft.
Hi,
It was actually very popular for its Broadcast Network, but it was the littlest one (five.tv) and then Sky-1 (A fox basic cable sister-net) bought it in 2008 (or 2009) I think. It also runs in syndication on other basic channels for episodes previous to that deal.
Kind regards,
Shakir Razak
It’s super popular in UK too, Laurie just doesn’t want to brag!!
So it’s 9.3 millions viewers in France for a population of 60 millions ?
It certainly helps the show is on TF1, on primetime and dubbed (horrendously BTW). Most people still only get the 6 network channel so it’s easier to make big scores. Still the proportion is just huge.
I am absolutely delighted, and this is an euphemism, at watching [ H ] ouse M.D on the first French channel . Besides, they have been taking the option to release DVD’ s with some kinds of very interesting magazines accompanied by few gifts for the fans. Good decision from TF1 ! I’ ve already watched at the # 5 season but I am glad that it will be broadcasted soon !
House also is NO.1 in Canada, more than 4 million viewers per episode.
I think House will do better on ABC or CBS.
Yes, HOUSE is very popular in France. French adore the character’s dry humor.
What is brilliant is that it started on a small cable channel co-owned by TF1 when the group decided to put it on their flagship channel.
The dubbing is rather good.
And I’m not even a fan of this show. I’ve stopped watching after season 2.
As for me, I am even more a fan of [ H ]UGH LAURIE than [ H ] OUSE M. D, thanks to his performance in ” Alfresco ” or ( there’ s nothing to worry about ), ” A bit of FRY & LAURIE “, ” JEEVES & WOOSTER “, ” FORTY SOMETHING “, ” Girl from RIO “, ” MAYBE BABY “… Monsieur LAURIE brought depth to his character and charism.
I can confirm this – in Czech Republic, House is incredibly popular – like simpsons or CSI, but no-one is watching crap like ncis etc.
That’s great news. But can we talk about HOW it is broadcasted? In France the episodes are often in any order, and the french version is awful and censored.
Many episodes were not broadcasted (mostly from season 1) because TF1 said that they showed a “too unpleasant House”!
Just one exemple of censure: S01E05, House prescribes two cigarettes a day to cure a digestive problem. But in the french version, he prescribes two bowls of rice a day… Not funny anymore, not subversive anymore, and not medically right anymore.
I hope that one day creators and producers will sell their shows with this clause: you shall not betray.
Should you be taken aback at the distorted translation or some censorship whereas we are getting to live in a ” politically correct ” French society ? Lucky for the fans, we can watch and listen to the adequate and right scripts’ lines thanks to the DVD’ s…
It has been censored in Italy as well. In the first season every criticism towards religion was omitted and the episode House versus God was translated into House AND God!
With the c.a. 16 million people in the Netherlands, 793.000 viewers is a very good score. I’ve seen House rate over this average of course. There episodes I remember beïng watched by over a million people…
Yep, in Poland it’s popular indeed. I love House and I know many ppl who love this show
in Poland it’s 3,3 milion from 40 milions – nice!
From what i know only polish dancing with the stars has bigger audience.
In France, we have one season of delay compared to the other close French-speaking chains (Switzerland, Begique). The season 5 will only start the 2nd of February 2010.
Since the season 3, the episodes are display in the right order.
Hopefully, there are DVD or VOD to watch the not censured version by TF1.
A french fan.
I think Europeans like it because it is not really (north) American (different from all other stuff coming from the USA) and the House humor is also very European…….
Sorry for the sloppy spelling (nog=not) (the Houses=House)
House is the best show on TV.
