I will always support Hollywood comebacks after an appropriate period of penance. But not everyone agrees with me, apparently. (And I’m Jewish, too.):

It’s funny to see these Newscasters fold when an actor asks them a question. Not so easy is it to be on the other side? Sam Rubin has never been a good interviewer anyway. He means well but his horrific as an entertainment reporter. I would love to know what happened the night of that arrest so that we know what really happened. Mel makes it seems as if there were things reported that weren’t true. We might never know. Where is that tape?
Am I the only one who felt Mel was slurring/chewing on his words a bit?
So, finding Mel and his remarks objectionable only counts if you don’t “have a dog in this fight” (aren’t Jewish)? Or is one only entitled to object if one is not Jewish? This goy objects, whether entitled to or not (in Mel’s delusional little world), and I certainly won’t be paying a nickel to see his movies as a actor, director, or otherwise. Also loved his calling his comments remarks “attributed” to him. So was he so drunk he doesn’t remember? Or does he really think the cops or the press (or whoever) would make up and attribute to him comments so creatively offensive? Perhaps he wasn’t quoted verbatim, but one can be confident the reports of his remarks got the gist right (particularly since he has ample funding to fight a libel case were the comments totally false). Man up and admit you said it (and apologize), or, if it was a night of blackout drunkeness, admit that you don’t know what you said (and apologize).
Mel is a very angry dude, and yes he is an anti-semite. Alcohol is like truth serum for bigots, it just opens up the gates, and lets it flow. The joke on the set of Conspiracy Theory was that he thought it was a documentary.
My favorite comment – co-anchor: ‘what you didn’t say, said more’ – specifically it said to the audience that the interviewer is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Sometimes if you ask a testy question you will get a testy response. The color ran from his face, probably worried he would get smacked!
does that mean your name is Nikki Finklestein?
He can go fuck himself for all his bad behavior and his fake pious Catholic sect bullshit that he spews in all directions. Hate is hate is hate, Mel. And that Jesus guy who’s supposedly so important to you would hardly condone you dissing the Jews 2000 years later — even if you were drunk off your ass!
Does Mr. Gibson even understand that Jesus was a Jew?
I hope the movie tanks and he can crawl back under whatever rock he’s been living under since the whole fiasco.
I’m all for a comeback, too…but not when it’s clear he doesn’t give a shit and feels no contrition at all for his behavior.
Though I don’t know Mel Gibson personally like many celebs, I do believe that he deserves some latitude. Even though he made a grave public mistake while “intoxicated,” there are many celebrity situations that have been forgiven and forgotten…..like killing someone and then going back to work.
It’s a tragedy when a public figure makes a very publicized error in judgement but to take anyone’s views and feel offended personally is like disliking a woman because she’s not that into you.
Let’s not forget that alcohol plays a large part in a lot of the celebrity tragedy’s that come out in the press. That in itself is a sad lack of good common sense.
I still think he was trying to start a fight with the cops. He seemed to be a self-destructive drunk who wanted a good tazing. I hope he’s made peace with whatever lead him into that situation.
I’m pretty sure that people will go to his new film. I’m eager to go.
Any interviewer assuming his own contempt is shared by a majority audience, is fair game to be challenged. Some of Mel’s past behavior has been offensive and inexcusable, and symptomatic of our species’ common internal battle of good-vs-evil impulses. Yet other celebrities have gotten away with far worse criminal garbage without engendering so much personal hatred. Mel’s holier-than-thou industry peers would be better served spending half their negative energy improving their own professional output before condemning others. I’m grateful nobody was killed during Mel’s DUI, and grateful that he’s poised with a new raft of interesting projects for the next few years.
Hey, he was drunk after all when he said “F&#king Jews…Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world…are you a Jew?”, which gives the guy at least some excuse for sounding like a racist idiot.
As for his films, well, certainly no one can argue that it was Jews who turned Jesus in to the Feds, apparently because he cut into line during the white sale at Macy’s and took the last set of 100% cotton hand towels from the 50% off rack.
So yes, as a fellow Jew I feel he should be forgiven and welcomed back to join the morally righteous and law abiding masses who make up Hollywood (especially considering that Polanski raped a 13 year old girl while Jack Nicholson did lines off Warren Beatty’s shlong and we still kept giving them Oscars).
Now that was a mature point! Thank you!
So true!!!
If people can ignore all the idiot “star” antics that occur daily, Gibson’s wanting to return in front of the camera is a non issue, regardless of Sam “the wimp” Rubin wishing he coulda, shoulda, woulda confronted Gibson (BTW, that would have been Hi-larious!). So it boils down to either you like the characters and films the guy creates or you don’t, that simple. Personally, I’d go see one Gibson’s films before 95% of all the other drivel out there, anyway.
Well warm up the delete key because I have to agree with Mel Gibson’s bitterness a little bit. People don’t realize that the reason he lashed out at our Hebrew citizens, is because MANY of them had claimed they would no longer work with him or support his projects. What did he do that ticked so many Jews off? Simply made the movie, Passion of the Christ, which some oversensitive Jews felt somehow put them in a bad light. I don’t know why. But let’s face it, he was mad for a reason. I’m sorry to see he hasn’t gotten over it. Also, though people were hindering his career, it was nothing compared to the amount of money he lost from his divorce.
He had a reason? Are you a fucking moron? All the jews in the world could have said, we will never work with Mel Gibson again and it still wouldn’t have given Mad Mel a reason to go into an anti-semitic hate rant.
I didn’t say it was a good reason, just one we could understand. Refusing to work with someone because he made a historically accurate movie is hate. I will bet money that if people started refusing to work with you, and it greatly affected your income, you would call them haters, and you would be bitter. You are no better than Mel Gibson, even if you think you are in your mind. That’s just reality.
I was a huge Gibson fan–Lethal Weapon,Signs,et.al–and as a Jewish guy in this industry I was offended at his apparent anti-semitism revealed that night in Malibu.I want to believe that what he said here to Sam Rubin — i.e. raising doubt ‘he even said anything’ derogatory–but he appears like an ANGRY man–and he seemed genuinely uncomfortable on camera at the Golden Globes and a shell of his former swaggering, cavalier self. I agree with Sam–I never felt a sincere apology–or even a mea culpa if his ‘words were taken out of their proverbial context’.He could have gained so much at the Globes if he used that ‘spontaneous forum’ to say he felt badly that he hurt/offended anyone in the Beverly Hilton Grand Ballroom(which he clearly did) or anyone watching from home.It would have not only trumped the stupid “collusional” joke between him and Gervais–but would have resulted in eruptive applause from the legions of power in attendance, and been THE ‘story’ on Monday.Talk about a missed opportunity to demonstrate some
CLASS.
Nikki,
I’m glad you found this clip. I don’t think Gibson has changed or learned a single thing. He is a vile creature.
Sam Rubin is gutless. I agree Gibson came off aggressive, but follow up ask the question. Instead Rubin slinks back and talks tough the next day.
What a wasted opportunity, I agree Gibson is in the wrong here but why not ask him direct questions? Embarrassing Mr Rubin, you blew a golden opportunity.
“Do you have a dog in this fight?” Meaning, are you on a side: “Do you think I should come back?” or “Do you think I should never go back.” His meaning was very clear. Sam Rubin was looking for something to be offended by. Gibson has ALREADY apologized. And the people who keep asking for apologies are just plain unforgiving. No apology would ever be good enough. And for the person who suggested that he was uncomfortable at the Golden Globes – that’s rubbish. He looked happy and at ease and took the joke good naturedly. And to use the GG platform to apologize for something that happened years ago and has already been dealt with would have been way out of line. I’m looking forward to seeing Edge of Darkness. I refuse to join the hate wagon. Mel is no more an anti-semite than I am purple. Get over yourselves!
In a world where Brett Ratner and Michael Bay are still allowed to work in Hollywood after the atrocities they’ve committed on celluloid, I think I can deal with watching Mel’s work for 2 hours without dwelling on his personal, off-camera quirks.
This man is an unabashed anti-semite. Disgusting.
Hi,
Why aren’t Jewish people allowed to be seen as the “baddies” – The Brits and French, Plus Germans and Arabs, and Chinese have to deal with it almost all the time! :p
Besides, anyone who bothered watching the film itself or coverage at the time, would note the pains that Gibson went to to make it clear it wasn’t “the joos” who killed Jesus!
Kind regards,
Q
Dont forget the Eastern Europeans too. So basically the whole world except them.
Very TRUE. I’m not defending Mel, personally him and his movies are crap. But why is it okay for people to blatantly call all catholics pedophiles, all muslims as terrorists and so on, but my fellow Jewish go at with such venom to his stupid comments??
Please practice what you preach and stop all the name-calling on other religions if you don’t agree with Mel. You think you can you do that?
If he was a real journalist he would have follow up on that question and not be a dog with his tail between his legs.
the thing is, he is NOT a REAL journalist, he is an entertainment reporter. He is supposed to be impartial. The job of the entertainment reporter is to lob softball questions at the “star” like “what was it like to work with director X”, etc. Then to go back to the studio and give your review of the film. Save the hard hitting questions for Barbara Walters. Sam Rubin was out of line to bring up something from 3 years ago that had already been dealt with. In fact he even said there had many reports of apologies. But since Mel did not come to Sams door to apologize then the apology never happened. Personally I think Mel handled it pretty well. He certainly was mad to begin with but then he calmed down and said the right thing. For Sam to then come back in the studio to say what he thinks he should have said to his face was just wrong…..stick to the fluff Sam.
Mel Gibson is just a guy who had to much to drink and said some stupid stuff… just like I have done and just like just about every other person who has ever had a beer. I guess we’re all just lucky that there isn’t someone posting every stupid thing we say on the internet. He’s good in his profession, he’s a decent human being, and he’s done a lot more good things than bad things in his life. I’d be very happy if someone could describe me that way someday.
Not only does Rubin have the right to ask this question but, as a reporter, one could argue he has a RESPONSIBILITY to ask it… I’m pretty certain Mike Wallace would ask it.
The big question is… Where are all those people who said they’d never work with him again(Ari Emanuel being the most outspoken of the bunch)?
He who is without sin….Guess you can’t have a stone fight if no stones are cast….Cast yourself as a better person….fight over….move on. Live and forgive.
Mel Gibson is one of our most gifted actors. Even Dolly Parton pointed out that there are too many slimy jews in Hollywood. Mel doesn’t have to be friends with everyone, and if the jews don’t like it, well they can stay home with their Barbra Streisand DVDs.
Go to hell.
