BREAKING NEWS! 5TH UPDATE AT 7:45 PM & 4TH UPDATE 4:20 PM: On tonight’s monologue, Jay Leno sounds upset, even going so far to say he has “trust” issues with NBC right now. Which indicates that Leno and his reps are fighting NBC’s attempts to cancel The Jay Leno Show at 10 PM primetime Monday through Friday. That would violate his 5-year contract in which the network gave his show a 2-year iron-clad commitment. But NBC doesn’t want to absorb the penalty — “it’s just too big” — so their solution is to find a place for Jay in late night. But, wait — wouldn’t Leno like NBC’s idea to return him to the 11:35 PM time slot he called home from 1992-2009? Not so much if it’s an abbreviated half-hour that’s just a lead-in to Conan. That’s right, TMZ is wrong: I’m telling you that Leno is not being offered The Tonight Show.
The fact is O’Brien doesn’t want to give up The Tonight Show, and NBC won’t dare make him because that incurs its own costly penalty. On the other hand NBC also recognizes that Jay’s monologues are a big draw and thinks having that first half-hour back will help trounce ABC’s Nightline which has gained strength ever since O’Brien took over The Tonight Show. NBC may act like this sked change is a slam dunk, but I’m told ”Conan hasn’t agreed to anything yet, especially not to push back to 12:05 AM.” NBC has the contractual right to start The Tonight Show as late as 12:05 AM, which it sometimes does for sports or news. So if NBC gives Jay Leno back the 11:35 PM slot, and calls it The Jay Leno Show, and keeps Conan on Tonight, the network incurs no penalties.
Yet NBC Universal chairman Jeff Zucker already deemed O’Brien was the future of the network’s late night and Leno was the past. In order not to lose Conan to a competing network, he bumped Leno. Then, in order not to lose Jay to a competing network, he pushed him into primetime. Now Leno gets moved back into late night with a lesser gig, and O’Brien humilated with a later start time. That’s not fair to either man. Besides, Jay had 18 months to transform his Tonight Show from a critical and ratings disaster into #1 in late night. Conan has only had 7 months. So NBC’s waffling statements today start to make sense as both hosts and their reps fight a behind-the-scenes turf war with the network. Leno’s monologue said:
Happy birthday to Katie Couric, it’s her birthday today. She left NBC for another network. I have to give her call to see how that is working out. As you may have heard, there is a rumor floating around that we were cancelled. I heard it coming in this morning on the radio. So far no one has said anything to me. But, Kev, if we did get cancelled, it will give us time to do some traveling. I understand that Fox is beautiful this time of year.
I don’t think there is any truth to the rumors. See, it’s always been my experience that NBC only cancels you when you’re in first place. So we are fine. We are OK…
[Later, Leno inserted this comment after a joke.] You know what happened? NBC found four guns in my locker. I was suspended. [Kevin says, “I’m glad they didn’t find them in my locker.”] We will keep following this story….
[Later, Leno returns to NBC yet again.] The Justice Department announced they will conduct an anti-trust review of Comcast’s proposed deal to merge with NBC. An anti-trust review. Which is the relationship i have with NBC. Anti-trust. Hey Kev, what does NBC stand for? Never believe your contract.”
3RD UPDATE 4:40 PM: NBC just issued this statement regarding all the Conan speculation today:
“We have the best comedy team in the business. We remain committed to keeping Conan O’Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night line-up, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television.”
2ND UPDATE 4:15PM: It’s been a day filled with Internet rumors, NBC denials and non-denials, and the network talking out of both sides of its mouth. This has created an uproar around the futures of both The Jay Leno Show and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien while the network talks to both hosts and their reps about how to fix the mess that NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker set in motion. But, to quote the Pottery Barn rule, “You break it, you buy it.”
Here’s what I’ve learned: Last night, NBC Universal Television Entertainment chief Jeff Gaspin came to The Jay Leno Show and met for two hours with Jay and his executive producer Debbie Vickers. When the show’s staff arrived this morning, they were shocked to see in the conference room that the bigwigs had taken down all the booking cards scheduling guests after the February 12-28 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Panic ensued. The cards went back up. Then a staff meeting was held today assuring everyone that the show is not cancelled. But staff were told there’s a good likelihood the show could move to just Fridays or worse. Now no one on the show, or in Hollywood for that matter, believes NBC isn’t cancelling The Jay Leno Show in primetime at 10 PM. Especially after NBC, in response to Internet rumors, finally released a statement today that it’s looking for ways to “improve the performance” of the show after “affiliate issues”. (See below). Also, I know that the TV community is being told to bring NBC as much primetime drama development as possible because Leno’s 10 PM time period is returning to scripted programming. And NBC already has put several high level, high profile dramas in development. (See below)
Between the Television Critics Association meeting which starts on Saturday for the next two weeks, and an NBC affiliates’ board meeting on January 21st, NBC can’t let Leno stay in limbo. Especially not when he’s repped by the most powerful TV business lawyer in Hollywood, Ken Ziffren. But today Conan also was hung out to dry when NBC decided not to comment — and, thus, refused to deny – a TMZ report that Leno was returning to his old job as host of The Tonight Show. But insiders assure me that Conan O’Brien will not be pulled as Tonight Show host if and when Leno is moved back into late night. And not just because NBC triggers a huge $50M financial penalty to O’Brien if it doesn’t continue with him. After all, that’s chicken feed if the network decides that’s the only way to save its once invincible late night lineup. Then again, Conan, too, has a powerful rep — WME, the big Hollywood agency that does megabusiness with NBC.
Exactly in what time slot and with what show Leno come comes back to late night is still under discussion. But at this point, thanks to NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker’s terrible decisions, both Jay and Conan could well be damaged goods. It’s questionable whether Leno can bring back his late night audience after failing so humiliatingly in primetime. (Ugh, he looked so uncomfortable in that chair and even his monologue was dumbed down for primetime.) Or whether O’Brien has the right stuff to continue. (He regularly trails David Letterman in both viewership and advertiser-coveted demos). And third wheel Jimmy Fallon has been losing to Craig Ferguson.
11:45 AM UPDATE & 10 AM PREVIOUS: I’ve learned that NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker flew out to Los Angeles last night to take his about-to-be Comcast bosses Brian Roberts and Steve Burke today on a “meet-and-greet” tour of NBC Universal’s West Coast. “He’s doing breakfasts and lunches with teams out there,” a source tells me. “He arrived last night for a day of meetings.” He will fly back and then attend the all-important affiliates’ board meeting scheduled for January 21st (after, NBC sources say, it was postponed from December). But against this backdrop, the Internet is working overtime spreading reports that The Jay Leno Show is about to be drastically changed or yanked completely. That’s because the affiliates are upset about Leno as the lead-in to their local newscasts, most of whose ratings have suffering because of Jay’s late night numbers in 10 PM primetime. Those news shows have been cash cows for the O&Os and affiliates whose general managers are now spitting mad these profit centers are threatened. In fact, NBC just now took the unusual step of issuing a statement about the FTV Live report saying Leno’s show will be cancelled without at first issuing a straight denial, which came later from the network. Here’s the first NBC statement:
“Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance.”
From the first day it was conceived through the first day it aired (photo right by Jim Stevenson) and for months afterwards, there’s been speculation about what might happen to The Jay Leno Show given the the critics’ drubbing and the affiliates’ doubting. Among the changes chattered about, 1) It would no longer be 5 days a week in primetime and reduce to Mon-Wed-Fri or even less frequent, 2) It would become a 1/2 hour primetime show paired with another comedy, 3) It would move to 11 PM and affiliates would move news to 10 PM, and, of course 4) It’s toast.
Hollywood is betting that the decision will be reached either to reduce the number of Leno’s shows per week or, even more drastically, take the show off primetime entirely. The timing for change is expected after NBC’s Vancouver Winter Olympics uber-coverage from February 12-28. Already, the network has shown it wants to return to hour-long drama for the 10 PM slot by ordering development of several high-profile, high-priced shows. These include one from JJ Abrams and another from Jerry Bruckheimer as well as a rebooted Prime Suspect and Rockford Files, plus a Warner Bros TV project, and another high-level show yet to be determined. I could say all sorts of snarky things here about Zucker for presiding over this disaster. But I’d just be repeating myself.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

exactly as everyone in the world anticipated, except for Jeff Zucker.
NBC should break out the cameras and document this drama as a reality show, to be shown in Jay’s current timeslot. This issue is more interesting than any NBC drama currently on the air…and is certainly more interesting than Jay’s show. OR, as much as I hate to say it, NBC would could improve things by adding yet another “Law & Order”.
…like most reality TV shows the viewers get to vote, right? Why not ask the viewers to vote for his/her favorite TV late night show host, whomever raises the most money wins the host job..BUT it will cost the voters $1.00 …and this money can be raised and sent to Haiti……!!!
The only fair resolution is to have Zucker and Silverman split the $50 million penalty, bump Conan back to his old spot and give Leno back The Tonight Show. This move is the worst decision in the history of network television. It eliminated the key time slot for dramas on a network that once thrived in this spot. Brandon Tartikoff would be disgusted. This decision would only be made by somebody that doesn’t watch television or have passion for it. How Zucker has his job is mind boggling. I hope Brian Roberts has a plan to bury his ass, this should be the fuel to give him what he deserves.
Jay is not funny and he should just retire already. What is wrong with him? What is he pulling over there?
There are simply no more adjectives available in the English language to describe the incompetance of Jeff Zucker. I suppose he’ll just have to become an adjective himself.
Well, Jeff can convince GE and Comcast of anything. He has that “reality distortion field.”
But now the execs at GE and Comcast are becoming embarrassed. And you can’t convince someone that other people aren’t laughing at you.
I don’t think even Jeff can get out of this one.
Oh, I love that! Make Zucker an adjective! “Man, he really zuckered that up.” It totally fits.
Would this make this whole situation a clusterzuck?
Yeah, I would hate to get “Zuckered” out in the middle of nowhere!
Or a verb: To Zucker a network right into last place with the programming skills of a box of hair.
Friends of mine came up with a new name for him when he cancelled a show we liked about 5 years ago: MotherZucker.
I love all the above on Zuker (:
O’Brien got zucked and didn’t even get kissed.
NBC has become the network of Failing Upward. Leno tanks at 10pm – so put him back as king of late-night. Zucker fails as a manager, programmer and human being – promote him to Comcast boss.
I love Jay and hope that regardless of what happens on NBC, that he finds a way to retain a show even if it means moving networks.
I think the Jay Leno show is very entertaining and it has been so much fun to watch. In this day and age where there is so much immoral, insulting, greusome, mind numbing garbage that it makes you sick to watch, the Jay Leno show in Prime time was a breath of fresh air, wholesome and honest. I hope they don’t cancel it and would like to see it stay on at 9:00 PM mountain time. We need more TV that is entertaining and worth watching not less.
NBC needs to return Jay to the Tonight Show and move Conan back to 12:35 where he belongs. NBC was afraid of losing Conan?? Really? Why be afraid of losing number two when you have number one.
Conan was promised the spot fair and square. He turned down other offers with the promise of the Tonight Show. Jay retired the Tonight Show and moved on to another show – why does Conan have to give his back? He moved his entire staff and family to California. It was a huge commitment for him. I’m not a huge Conan fan – he’s okay but I do believe he is getting a raw deal. I watched last night when Rick Gervais was on and I couldn’t believe NBC would allow him to belittle the network as badly as he did. They must be enjoying the current ratings even if it is at their expense.
They say that Conan O Brien is loses rating to David Letterman. Well Letterman is already 62 years old!!! Its only a matter of time before Letterman retires, and Conan is crowned the true king of late night in ratings.
While that’s true, Larry King’s like, a hundred and he’s still on the air.
I stopped watching Jay’s new show in the first week due to the ultra-liberal political guests. I go to Jay for entertainment, NOT politics.
For example, what in the WORLD is Barney Frank doing on a comedy show? He’s not funny, and he (and other ultra-libs with their agenda) just bring in all their baggage of hatred towards anyone that disagrees with them into what is supposed to be comedy and entertainment.
If I wanted lame, liberal politics, I will go watch that other NBC looser–MSNBC. Oh, wait, no one is watching THAT turkey, either!
Get Jay out of the buisness of providing a pulpit for the latest political cause and I’ll give him another look.
Stop trying to copy Letterman (10 at 10) and let Jay get back to being a regular, likable guy that most of the country would like to have as their next door neighbor or a guy you’d just like to go have a beer with and talk to for a while.
And why do you moronic right wing conservatives always have issues with spelling?
It’s ironic conservatives are the ones telling Hispanics to “speak the language” while at the same time they have such a difficult time spelling.
It’s “loser” not “looser”. “Looser” would define Ann Coulter.
LOL! My thoughts exactly, Retardicans are idiots.
That makes me laff!
“Stop trying to copy Letterman (10 at 10) and let Jay get back to being a regular, likable guy that most of the country would like to have as their next door neighbor or a guy you’d just like to go have a beer with and talk to for a while.”
Isn’t that what the minority (yes, minority) wanted in a President in 2000? Look where that got the country…
We think Jay Leno is great, when you let Jay be Jay. The 11:30 show was a real winner and my wife and I watched it every night for many years. Prior to Jay’s show, we watched Carson. When the 10:00 PM Leno show started, we started watching it. We soon discovered it was far too structured with the introduction of new things that are designed to appeal to the younger set, but are definately not vey funny to adults. In spite of the undesireable changes, we have stayed with Jay most evenings. The problem with his new time slot is the many competing one time shows that appear on telivision in this time slot. Sports are often a high priority with us.
When the writers were on strike, Jay provided his own humor and we loved it. Stop trying to make Jay appear and act like a teenager. We know you are after the younger crowd, but we feel Jays natural humor covers most age groups and will bring in the big advertising bucks. When Jay was pushed out of the 11:30 slot, we started to watch O’Brian and Letterman. We soon found we didn’t want to waste our good time watching either one of them. We simply started going to bed earlier.
The unbalanced political left influence soon became evident on Jay’s 10:00 PM show. For example, his recent attack on Sara Palin was simply a copy of Letterman’s never ending cheap shots on her and most other conservatives. We like Jay, we are moderates and have always accepted his past seemingly balanced critiques of both political sides. We feel that most thinking Americans are broad minded and readily accept fairness. Speaking for ourselves, we are sick and tired of the political crap coming from the big 3 networks. Many of the people we have contact with feel the same way. Before long, most thinking people will probably abandon these networks in the same way they are cancelling their newspaper subscriptions.
Both should be canceled; they are NOT funny or good. They are so fake! Craig Ferguson is honest and GREAT!
they both are no talents you are right
It always takes awhile for people to like any kind of change. It happens all the time. Jay Leno had horrible ratings when he first started. Conan had horrible ratings when he first started the Late Night. But they all ended up having great ratings in the end. Even your precious Craig Ferguson had bad ratings when he first started. People just don’t like change. I think Conan is funny and good. The problem with Jay’s show now, is that its just another show to the line up. People are used to just the two shows, either The Tonight Show or The Late Show. Throwing a third into the mix, just doesn’t work.
Love Craig Ferguson. Far funnier than Conan, far more interesting then either Conan or Leno. He’s the only late night show guy that I watch on a regular basis anymore. Letterman stopped being funny some time ago; now his shows just seem like a sad shadow of what they were a decade ago. I still rather like Leno, but he can’t run a monologue the way that Ferguson can.
Yes, Ferguson is the one to watch.
Love Leno & Ferguson But some of us have to get up early & go to work, so on the rear times I can watch Ferguson It’s a real special thing ,& I’ve noticed that the longer his show has been on the air the better its been, (like a fine bottle of wine), hey Ferguson, STAY WERE YOU ARE as if you move to NBC they’ll screw you just like Leno & Conan (& I don’t care to much for Conan’s style of humer). P.S. Can’t stand Letterman he’s Zuckered. (: (: (:
So your big plan is for NBC to replace Conan with Craig Ferguson. Great idea. That makes a lot of sense.
Conan was cancelled once before and ended up finding his audience afterwards. He can do it again.
Agree, Craig is Oklahoma’s favorite!
agreed – craig ferguson is by far the brightest star on late night – it’s past time for him to replace letterman.
Jay should have stayed with the sane format as the old show. Who cares about the portions of the program where he has celebratties come on screen and he asks them to answer 10 questions. Then he has a portions of the program where he brings in a famous person for about 4 or 4 minutes. (Arsenio Hall) What lame brain decided to change the format. When that was doen it was no longer the Jay Leno show. I used to look at it every night.
I like Jack Parr but suppose that’s kinda impossible:)
Leno should bounce to another network gracefully -explore other options. Or simply stay out of TV for awhile.
Leave Conan in place, but for Gods sake Conan, get back to the “strike era” shows. That was some of the best TV I’ve seen. Frankly without more hands on ‘Conan wits’ on the Late Show, its days are numbered regardless of this debacle. With its saccharin, ugly set, and kid glove approach, Conan is failing his fans at the present and barely gaining new ones if any.
One more thing. Jimmy Fallon is running a great show, and I suspect most of you who’ve tanked it here and in conversation haven’t watched it since its debut week, which was awkward and generally bad all around. But here’s the deal: He has now arrived. He’s confident, quick on his feet, does some very funny skits/TV show spoofs, and gives the old Conan a true run for his money in his freshness and energy. I loathed Fallon at SNL, but I’ve given him a chance and have to say while he never should’ve been on SNL, this show is his calling. He is the heir to the Late Show if there is one, and in some ways he’d be better than Conan is now. Trust me. Watch the show again. It’s good.
Jimmy Fallon sucks!
I did not abandon Jay Leno show because he had a new schedule, because I actually thinks he is the best and less cynic and partisan than the Lettermans…
I abandoned NBC because of the partisan support of Obama’s socialism, to bankrupt America.
I think the News Service of a T.V. station should be fair and balance, and NBC obviously, is not.
WHY IS IT THAT MAIN STREAM AMERICA CAN SEE THAT OBIEN SHOW IS A DRY HUMOR DUD PRODUCTION AND NOT NBC. JAY LENO IS BEST; AFTER ALL THE TONIGHT SHOW IS THE SHOW THAT TUCKS AMERICA IN BEFORE REST. CERTAINLY A GOOD LAUGH IS NEEDED TO LIFT THE SPIRIT MOMENTARLY CONSIDERING THE STRESS AND WORRIES WE SHARE AS A NATION AND INDIVIDUALS.
PERSONALLY WE PULLED THE PLUG THE NIGHT JAY LENO SHOW QUITE AIRING. THANKS, DEC WILKES, GRANBURY, TX
What do you expect its NBC … aka Nothing But Crap network. They went ultra left and destroyed the network.
conan= not funny
I have been a fan of Conan for years and love his humor, but I was very surprised he made zero adjustment in his content when he took over. Can you imagine Carson or Leno telling so many crude sexual jokes in his monologue? He needs to clean up his act and behave like a Tonight Show host. I can see why he might lose many viewers due to some of the content. Plus he’s still telling Bush jokes. I know NBC is in bed with Obama but the bias is also a turnoff for so many.
Are you kidding? Your post is so biased its ridiculous. The “crude” jokes are the ones that turned me off to Leno. He always throws one or two in there. People hear what they choose to, its selective and convenient. I’m not saying Conan’s monologue is exempt from this type of humor, because it’s not. I just say it the way it is.
Jay 11:30 to 12:15
Conan 12:15 to 1:00
Jay Leno Show
Conan keeps the Tonight Show
Jay gets rid of the stupid car race and the horrible 10 questions along with earn your plug which is rarely good. Give the man back the classic desk for interviews and quick stealing obvious looks at the cue cards. NBC should be ashamed.
Conan needs to go..not Leno.
I HATE CONAN OBRIAN… WE WANT JAY BACK IN THE TONIGHT SHOW SLOT…
Conan fans, all 3 million of us strong (and that number would have grown by leaps and bounds over the years if he was given more time) are walking away from you, NBC. You give 10:30 (11:30 to those not in the Central Time Zone) back to Leno and we won’t watch him. Ever.
Boycott ‘em, Conan people. W/o the Conan viewers Jay never would’ve beaten Letterman.
How about a mass movement to sign up Conan fans as Neilsen families?
Keep CONAN and JIMMY!! My personal opinion is if you want to keep the older people viewing NBC then keep Jay Leno. Conan and Jimmy are more in tune with the younger age groups. If you move Jay back, I won’t be watching NBC late night. I actually find myself staying up late to watch Conan and Jimmy. When Jay was on I was either in bed or watching a different network.
Thanks, Deanna
thats stupid..Jay Leno had his spot decided to leave it didn’t work out..so Jay is out of luck…he does not get his spot back , he is done…It Conans Show now…no renigs! NBC ever think maybe people just dont want to watch him nemore
Moving Jay Leno to prime time wasn’t necessarily a bad idea. After all, Jack Parr did reasonably well for about three years when he moved from late night to prime time back in the ’60s. But Parr’s 10 pm ET show aired only once a week — Friday. Maybe NBC should have slated Leno for one night a week as well?
I hate to burst your bubble, but Jay Leno is not Jack Parr and we’re no longer living in the 1960′s.
Perhaps you also believe putting C.C. Sabthia in the outfield makes sense because it worked well for Babe Ruth back in the 1920′s?
See what I did there?
Anyone remember when ABC supersaturated the airwaves with 4-5 episodes of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? People got tired of Regis.
Yeah!!!
Let’s figure out the numbers of people that were “unemployed” so that NBC could save money putting Jay in at 10:00 p.m. Average scripted show, 8 writers, 8 subscribers, 8 story historians, 23 free-lance directors, ( one per episode_ 5 assistant directors,(per episode) Key photographers( 2 – 3 minimum)per episode assistants to Key photographers… 2 – 3 minimum)(per episode),Minimum 5 stars, 7 re-curring actors , 5 – 10 guest stars per episode, 10 -15 co-stars per episode, 20 featured actors per episode, 100- 200 extra performers per episode. Multiply times 23…….. Oh Yeah , if you lived in a small town….and some @$%OW#UO…hole came in and said, we can make as much money without you…How would you feel. Jay’s ego is not worth all the unemployment his ….. 100 employees continue to enjoy. Yeah, let’s buy another classic car on the back of the IATCE member who lost his house in foreclosure so that NBC could make JAY happy!!!! sometimes when you are RICH and on the TOP YOU forget who put you there…. The People. And they have been screwed…. over, and then there families, and then their homes, and then their self-worth….and you got a PROMOTION.
A Jack Parr reference? Seriously? There were three networks and maybe some local stations back then. The comparison is useless.
Yes, it worked for Jack Parr in the year 1066, why wouldn’t it work now?
Have Jay read the local news. That should satisfy them…
Hard to do since there are over 200 markets and Jay only has an hour. That is going to be about 2 seconds for each market.
The failure of this late night to prime time shift has created a real dilemma for NBC and its affiliates. Cancellation seems the most likely outcome.
Jay changed his format. The chair without a desk, short monologues, airing skits at the end of the show. I gave up watching it. I used to look forward to 15 minute monlogue and a 5 minute skit. Now he wants us to watch the whole show. Forget it
I agree. What is it about not having a desk that makes the set (and consequently the entire show) look so cheap, like something you’d see on a show in the middle of the night – say, a bleary-eyed, who cares 2AM slot? The look doesn’t even retain half of it’s former late night appeal. And they were trying to serve this to viewers in prime???
Classic dilemma — changes format of the show = people annoyed that it’s not like this old gig, but doesn’t change format of the show = people annoyed that it’s like his old gig. It’s a no-win situation for him; you can’t please all of the people, all of the time.
Wait, so if you don’t have a desk it’s automatic failure? Do you still suck your thumb too simply because that’s what you were comfortable doing growing up…?
Jay’s a great personality and fine entertainer, but viewing habits are just that–habits. Changing them is nearly impossible. Jay at ten is simply not Jay at 11:30.
Yeah, like that Letterman guy that nobody watches anymore after he moved from 12:30 to 11:30 — on a different network.
Oh, wait.
How about this: JAY goes to Fox at 11:00pm since his viewers may like to go to sleep on the earlier side and we can all catch his monologue; CONAN goes to ABC at 12:00 and we can all catch his monologue (and he will boost his ratings by getting back back some of the later crowd); at 11:30 everyone can tune in for Dave’s monologue and at 12:30 everyone can watch Craig’s monologue which is always hilarious. For those who think the monologues are the best part they can get all of them because they are staggered.
As for NBC at those times they can put on episodes of shows that were already filmed but not aired: Southland, Kings, etc. to make up for lost time with all the one-hour series that truly shouldl have been playing all along at 10pm–and which many people have been missing. (And NBC learns a little lesson in losing both hosts.) But basically everybody wins.
shit is just coming out of Zucker’s mouth every time he talks about Leno
So Jeff Zucker ‘exactly anticipated’ a huge ratings and affiliates bust and still put Leno on the air at 10:00? Why exactly does this bufoon still have a job?
I will believe it when I see it. I really don’t see them changing up their schedule for the immediate future. They simply do not have anything to fill it with. Not only would few other shows do better than a 1.5 at 10P, but ALL of them would cost incredibly more than Leno does to air.
I would LOVE to see 5 more programs (hopefully scripted)end up produced; but it’s hard to be ok with knowing you will lose profits and spend more on new shows. Shareholders aren’t as excited about doing that as viewers are.
They blew this from the beginning. Tried to keep both Jay and Conan on the air and happy, but there’s only ONE tonight show.
I haven’t watched either of these 2 half-sies shows in months.
Letterman got his revenge against NBC the old fashioned way. Karma Police. If they’d picked him over Leno back when they had the chance, he’d be in full-on Johnny Carson mode for well over a decade now.
THANK YOU!!
This post says it all.
Completely agree with the point about Letterman.
Talk about damaged goods! I used to watch Leno’s late night program, but after watching the 9 o’clock show for a couple months I have lost all interest in the man. He’s just proven to be so…dull.
Move Jay back to late night, Zucker, but I guarantee he won’t put up near the ratings he did at 11:30 prior.
The best thing about NBC is 30 Rock, and, of course, Chuck, which I still dream about.
Actually, he’s gotten about the same ratings @ 10 pm, as he got @ 11:30 pm. At the very least, Leno could probably still beat Letterman @ 11:30 pm, unlike Conan who is getting regularly trounced.
You’re right that the best things on NBC right now is 30 Rock, The Office, and Chuck.
Maybe they should put them both up there along with yet another comedian. It will be The View PM (the male version).
Letterman is perv. Even though Carson was funny then, I doubt that anyone that is young, before Carson’s time, will probably not think he is as funny as older people do now. You have to move forward not backwards. Letterman is a jerk because anyone who sleeps around as the boss is a total jerk. Dave should retire. He’s the creepy old guy that is trying to look up your dress.
Maybe the affiliates should clean up their own houses first before making Jay Leno the scapegoat for their inane, local yokel stories they call news. As I have said before, I wouldn’t watch my local NBC affiliate unless someone paid me big bucks to do so. They suck.
Amen to that. NBC5 Chicago News at 10 is unwatchable. Come to think of it, all the local news is unwatchable. Put Leno on instead of the news, screw the affiliates. Who needs them in the era of Cable? Another factor is Lopez on TBS. What about building the Universal HD channel with a late night talk show?
I couldn’t agree more. The local news is a joke. Total trash.
It’s not impossible that JZ took the red-eye out to LA last night, but as of 10pm Wednesday eve, he was lingering in the lobby of the DGA Theater in NYC at the premiere of “Leap Year.”
Red-eye?! You aren’t under the illusion that a putz like Zucker flies commercial are you? A Gulfstream out of Teterboro is more like it.
Do they even have red eye flights going from East to West?
I tuned in the first few weeks, willing to give this show a chance. But I gotta say it’s the most unfunny, poorly written comedy show I’ve ever watched. Who writes this horribly unfunny material? You look at all the unemployed writers in town…I don’t think it was necessarily a bad concept, but it was so poorly executed… it doesn’t help that Leno looks like he’d rather be in the waiting room for a root canal.
I’m not a huge Bruckheimer fan, but I am anxious to see what Abrams can bring to the table for NBC at 10 p.m. As long as NBC is making changes get rid of Trauma, for god’s sakes. This pale imitation of E.R. has got to go.
I had lunch with Zucker once and pitched him a pilot I wrote back in the 90s and he loved it but never heard anything more about it. What makes Jay think he’ll see a true “commitment” from this guy? CALL HIM OUT NIKKE!!
Why not just call it what it is?–a failed experiment. Give Jay back the Tonight Show and let Conan do the half-hour a night comedy thing and/or something on the Web?
Great idea !!!
Recipe for disaster “you can’t go home again” Jay will never recoup his previous audience completely, Conan is a fantastic entertainer, he doesn’t deserve a crummy half hour, he deserves a CHANCE! The Letterman sex scandal brought tons of curious viewers to CBS. This whole thing is awful. Jay has enough money and cars and fame to give it a rest and let the younger generation have a shot. Jay delivers the writer’s lines with great timing- that’s it. He has little natural wit. The best thing he has is likability – Go Conan!!
I was a big fan of David Letterman in college (late 1980′s). It was a sad day when Conan replaced him on “Late Night”. Conan is not funny and never has been! He is odd and makes most normal people feel creepy! Perhaps I feel that way because I am 45 now but not getting his humor doesn’t bother me a bit. Conan=YUK!
Here is David Letterman’s 2009 year in review. Dave started the year in second place and held that position through the end of May. Meanwhile Craig Fergerson, one of Dave’s employees started catching up to Conan in the 12:35 AM slot and started winning consistantly when Conan left Late Night to put together the New Tonight Show. At that point, Craig started beating new Late Night host Jimmy Fallon.
In the first week of June (I think Dave was off that week), Conan’s Tonight Show premiered to buffo ratings though the ratings quickly started to fall. When Dave returned, the Late Show started to beat Conan in the ratings to the point that the Conan O’Brien Tonight Show was falling below the Jay Leno Tonight Show.
It was after this point that Dave had his scandals. First, he told a joke that was disapproved by Sarah Palin. Then came the sex scandal in October, finally he is being attacked by gays for a joke they don’t like.
Meanwhile, Jay premiered his new show on September 14. Viewers were promised an all new comedy show instead Jay delivered The Tonight Show at 10 PM and ratings went down. Sure they stayed about the same as 11:35 PM, but those numbers don’t cut it at 10 PM. As for the local stations, tough but they have to stick with the news, weather, and sports formula. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Otherwise the only reason why we are talking about local news is because ratings have been down for them compared to last year at this time.
What must happen here is that Jay needs to be cancelled outright period and NBC will have to force him to sign a non-compete clause for the next 4.5 years and buyout, with 10% interest, the remainder of that five year contract that he signed. Las Vegas is likely to be the big winner as it will be the only place where you can see Jay Leno.
Why not just get rid of Jay? Everyone agrees about the damage to the local affiliates during the 11 p.m. hour but no one seems to mention that those people leaving the stations at 10 pm and not coming back for 11 are probably not coming back for The Tonight Show at 11:30 either. We will never know if Conan’s ratings are due to his issues or because of Jay.
Younger viewers, like myself, love Conan and will continue to grow with him for years to come; he is far edgier and more interesting.
I’m sure Leno is a very nice man and my parents (in their late 60s and early 70s) love him. But my parents are starting to go to bed earlier these days…
I’m just sayin’…
Right on the nose. As someone else said “You can’t go home again.” This is another bad career move for Leno. If he goes back to 11:35 p.m. he’s going to end his career losing to Letterman. Retire, Jay. You should have before.
I went on a Conan message board last night and fans are livid about the rumors.
Message to NBC – you displace Conan at 11:35 after a measly 6 months and I and many other Conan fans will NEVER watch Leno at 11:35. You lose the Conan fans who used to watch Jay while awaiting the tall redhead at 12:35, you lose to Letterman (or Ferguson after he takes over) nightly by about 2 million viewers. That’s not even factoring in the fact that as Nikki says Leno is now damaged goods.
Leno is of course an embarrassing failure and he’ll be canned outright. But the real question is whether Comcast will fire Zucker as well, or continue to buy his self-aggrandizing bullshit. Is there a bigger dope in all of showbiz?
WOW !! I love leno
Nope, Comcast already announced that if they buy NBC, they’re actually going to keep Zucker as boss. Comcast is just as stupid as NBC… they make a nice fit together.
NBC commited to keep Jay on for five years. Comcast committed to keep Zucker on. NBC may break commitment. Were I Zucker, I wouldn’t sign any long-term mortgages.
Comcast’s deal with NBC involves Comcast paying less for NBC if it underperforms. So it’s in their financial interest to keep Zucker until the deal is complete in a few years (3 yrs. from now?).
This deal is turning into the movie “Major League”, with NBC being the Cleveland Indians and Comcast being the owner of the team.
And regardless of what NBC does, Comcast might just end up walking away. However, the reason why NBC is in this position, is because of Jeff Zucker and GE ownership. That idiot ruined NBC and the only incentive Comcast might have is to become a whistleblower and ruin GE. Then Comcast might get NBC for next to nothing while GE would be a dead duck to the federal government.
Since I’m a little older than many of you, the only bigger dope I can think of was Fred Silverman. Look up Supertrain; Hello, Larry; and Pink Lady and Jeff. Upon further review, Zucker is still the bigger dope.
I think the best option would be to cut it down to a half hour and move it to 8 p.m. But then, they don’t even have enough sitcoms to pair it with in order to do that five nights a week.
The whole experience has been so strange. As a Conan fan, I hate to say it, but it’s been a series of ever-worsening decisions all stemming from Zucker’s decision to give Conan the Tonight Show. What a botch.
NBC should cancel this failed experiment. Jay Leno is no longer interesting or funny, his time has come and NOW gone. Watching his show is like watching my GRANDPA, trying to be funny.
Yeah, thats why he was #1 in late night, in viewership and in the 18-35 demo. Zucker made a huge mistake in changing what was already a winner.
…and Letterman is your great great Grandfather’s creepy old neighbor that spies on your kids. Letterman is Mr. Herbert on family guy in like two years. Conan is just too wacky to watch for an hour.
“I could say all sorts of snarky things here about Zucker for presiding over this dissaster. But I’d just be repeating myself.”
You WOULD be repeating yourself; but you WOULDN’T be wrong!
Seriously, for all the bad things you say, it’s not inaccurate. It’s not like he’s hurt by what you say either – seeing as how he keeps falling up in the corp.
Either way, NBC is damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Knew Jay Leno wouldn’t work at 10pm the minute they mentioned it.
Expect him on the alphabet network sometime this year, spanking Dave and Conan in the ratings right off the ground.
Whatever you are smoking, I want some!
This format is done. Letterman is the only one that has half of a chance to last at least for a few more years.
The only people that watch late night shows nowadays fondly recall the days when Jack Parr hosted the Tonight Show!
And Steve Allen before Paar and before that Dagmar and Jerry Lester with Milton Delugg and his orchestra!
Well, I fit that description, but at least Carson filled Parr’s shoes. Leno and O’Brien have been dismal failures.
Yeah, Jay was such a failure. I mean, c’mon, he was only the host of a late night show that was #1 for most of his 17 year run … yep, sounds like a dismal failure to me. (sarcasm)
The format is not done. Fallon and Ferguson are doing interesting things at 12:35, and the networks aren’t losing money on them.
You missed option 5: Jay goes back to his old time slot and that putz Conan gets the big boot.
That would be the right answer
Amen!
NBC you really screwed up!even our college kids watched Jay Leno.now they do not watch NBC.so if you think obrian is better you should take a poll by the listeners he is sickening!a group of our friends feel the same.maybe Zucker should be moved somewhere.
Amen!
Jay at 11:30 works for me. Conan sucks – there is nothing funny or entertaining about the guy!
Conan sucks
Here’s what is most rumored (and makes most sense):
Leno back to 11:30 where he will double Conan’s ratings.
Conan back to 12:30.
Fallon to 1:30.
Carson Daly canceled.
Conan may resist but is now damaged goods, commanding less than half from ABC or Fox than he could have received if he’d gone to another network straight from the 12:30 show.
As a committed Conan fan I’ll tell you right now that if Leno is moved back to 11:30 I’ll never watch again. And I watched regularly when he was in that spot before. Every single Conan viewer who ever tuned in to Leno is gone, and our numbers are legion. Try beating Letterman without the Conan fans, Jay. Ain’t gonna happen.
Conan’s ratings are a reflection of the terrible Leno lead in. Give the guy a chance with a Bruckheimer show lead-in and see what happens.
Ok, but what about the building they put up @ univ. for the “NEW TONIGHT SHOW ” Now what
they didnt build a new building, they just retrofitted one of their many soundstages, he could stay here and do his show from LA too, but still it wouldnt be that much of a loss to set him back up in NY. they will already be paying him 50 million for breaking the tonight show contract. but then again they could just move the tonight show to 1230, and the jay leno show to 1135. i wonder if that would avoid the 50 mill payment
All I can say is: “Remember New Coke“?
+1 if that isnt the most likely scenario it should be, fallon to 130 or write him a slot on one of the comedies. talk shows are not really for him.
you are right on the nose if conan decides to stay he will get 12:05 to 1:05 ,jay will get the half hour from 11:35 till 12:05 . if conan tells nbc to kiss off then jay will get a full one hour show 11:35 till 12:35 I guess jimmy fallon and carson daly are in limbo for the momment till jay and conan are figure out . this wa handled so badly from the start.I fell bad for all the people who had to relocated because of Conans move . I have a felling that Fox might come knocking at Conans door .I don’t know what hey are going to cal the shows when theis change goes into effect. jay show is to stop when teh olympics start and he is to come back at the new time when the olympics are over
Good Lord – spell check!!!!!
Poor NBC having to reward Jay for changing his mind about “retiring” rather than let him go to ABC and compete against Conan. Any decision is going to cost a boat load of money and they will still have someone on ABC or FOX beating them in the ratings at 11:30. Being 3rd place at 11:30 is worse than 2nd.
Jay’s show WAS the Tonight Show as he barely changed anything except the sitting arrangements and some new paint. It was still unfunny and the ratings prove it. The ONLY reason it seemed to work at 11:30 was because it was the Tonight Show and Hugh Grant got caught with a hooker. He would have been gone long ago if not for that.
Lets put him to pasture and move on
A good # of people here seem to think that Leno is still relevant. I have to go with Young Viewer and say that he’s just not funny. Neither is Dave. Dave has the luxury of of all the old 50+ viewers that have been watching him for decades. Conan is fresh, funny & has good writers. It will be a shame if he gets canceled to bring the dinosaur Leno back to 11:30 because he’s been whining about wanting his old spot back. History tells the story. Leno tanked when he first started on the Tonight Show, but they rode out the criticism & low ratings and he eventually won. They need to give Conan that same chance.
Wrong. The last time Conan was funny was during the Writers’ Guild strike. When the strike ended, so did his humor. And it’s only gone further downhill since then. Conan AND Daly are finished, and Fallon never got started. He’s actually painful to watch.
This is just NBC really falling all over their own face here. They’re doing some great things on Thursday night – Parks and Rec and Community are great – the problem really is that NBC doesn’t know who it’s for anymore. Let the other guys crank out CSI spinoffs for the olds; the only way that NBC is going to stay (become) relevant is to actually start looking to hit the yuppie demo. You know, too old for Gossip Girl, too young for NCIS.
Clearly, if they’re picking Jay to move back to late night, they’re making a HUGE mistake – Jay’s the one really responsible for Conan’s numbers in the first place; his crappy affiliate lead in has got to be contributing to Conan’s ratings, not to mention the competition for guests between Jay and Conan is making Conan the one with the short end of the stick.
Conan’s great, he’s funny, creative, and if late night as a whole is going to survive, they’ve got to realize it’s got to go in a place that appeals to the younger audience. Jay’s audience is going to die out from under him.
On the nose. It’s Leno’s lousy lead-in that’s responsible for Conan’s ratings. But I doubt Conan leaves NBC. He’d go down in history as the host with by far the shortest tenure, 8 months. Conan, you don’t want that.
Conan, do the 12:05 show for now. F Leno back. If you leave now you’ll look soooo weak, tail between the legs.
Wrong!
Conan is funny whenever he is absurd. Right now he is using his writers as a crutch and needs to become the head writer himself. Look at his prior work. He has written the “Marge vs the Monorail” installment of the Simpsons. During the strike, Conan was the author of the “I Invented Mike Huckabee” storyline. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert only got involved because there wasn’t much else to do. Let Conan become the head writer and the Tonight Show will do fine.
you are obviously insane n probbly old as dirt. Conan is awesome n funny at all times. i NEVER watched the tonight show when Leno was hosting. And Fallon is hysterical and the show is good all the way thru.
Another YOUNG Viewer,
I didn’t realize you spoke for the entire population — who knew that everyone in the world shared your exact views. (sarcasm)
Leno still has a loyal core of viewers; he’s garnered about the same numbers of viewers @ 10 pm with his new show, as he got @ 11:30 pm with the Tonight Show. Also, he consistently beat Letterman over the course of his 17 year run as host. But suddenly, you believe he has no hope? Sorry but I think you’re being pretty ridiculous with your assumptions.
Also, I don’t see how it’s whining when he simply answered honestly to a question from a reporter if he would consider moving back to 11:30 pm if asked by the network. Could you honestly tell me that you would choose no job over having a job? I respect him more for at least being honest, instead of the usual Hollywood crap of lying about such things, and then doing them anyways.
I’m an oldie from way back (50+)…watched Johnny as a kid and into adulthood. Followed Jay into that spot and I then switched to Dave. Conan? He’s definately funnier than Jay. And I get it, it’s the 18-39 y.o. they’re gunning for. I read that’s been somewhat successful for Conan. Who’s watching Jay? and can they sell that demo?
Jay is funnier on a bad day that Conan is on a good one, and I am not one of those people old enought to remember Jack Paar
You may think he’s not funny, but younger viewers fail to remember that Jay Leno was #1 in late night and beating Dave up until last spring when he left late night. #1 for all those years must mean something. He will do far better than Conan, it’s just too bad NBC didn’t tell Conan to take a hike 4 years ago.
