BREAKING NEWS! 5TH UPDATE AT 7:45 PM & 4TH UPDATE 4:20 PM: On tonight’s monologue, Jay Leno sounds upset, even going so far to say he has “trust” issues with NBC right now. Which indicates that Leno and his reps are fighting NBC’s attempts to cancel The Jay Leno Show at 10 PM primetime Monday through Friday. That would violate his 5-year contract in which the network gave his show a 2-year iron-clad commitment. But NBC doesn’t want to absorb the penalty — “it’s just too big” — so their solution is to find a place for Jay in late night. But, wait — wouldn’t Leno like NBC’s idea to return him to the 11:35 PM time slot he called home from 1992-2009? Not so much if it’s an abbreviated half-hour that’s just a lead-in to Conan. That’s right, TMZ is wrong: I’m telling you that Leno is not being offered The Tonight Show.
The fact is O’Brien doesn’t want to give up The Tonight Show, and NBC won’t dare make him because that incurs its own costly penalty. On the other hand NBC also recognizes that Jay’s monologues are a big draw and thinks having that first half-hour back will help trounce ABC’s Nightline which has gained strength ever since O’Brien took over The Tonight Show. NBC may act like this sked change is a slam dunk, but I’m told ”Conan hasn’t agreed to anything yet, especially not to push back to 12:05 AM.” NBC has the contractual right to start The Tonight Show as late as 12:05 AM, which it sometimes does for sports or news. So if NBC gives Jay Leno back the 11:35 PM slot, and calls it The Jay Leno Show, and keeps Conan on Tonight, the network incurs no penalties.
Yet NBC Universal chairman Jeff Zucker already deemed O’Brien was the future of the network’s late night and Leno was the past. In order not to lose Conan to a competing network, he bumped Leno. Then, in order not to lose Jay to a competing network, he pushed him into primetime. Now Leno gets moved back into late night with a lesser gig, and O’Brien humilated with a later start time. That’s not fair to either man. Besides, Jay had 18 months to transform his Tonight Show from a critical and ratings disaster into #1 in late night. Conan has only had 7 months. So NBC’s waffling statements today start to make sense as both hosts and their reps fight a behind-the-scenes turf war with the network. Leno’s monologue said:
Happy birthday to Katie Couric, it’s her birthday today. She left NBC for another network. I have to give her call to see how that is working out. As you may have heard, there is a rumor floating around that we were cancelled. I heard it coming in this morning on the radio. So far no one has said anything to me. But, Kev, if we did get cancelled, it will give us time to do some traveling. I understand that Fox is beautiful this time of year.
I don’t think there is any truth to the rumors. See, it’s always been my experience that NBC only cancels you when you’re in first place. So we are fine. We are OK…
[Later, Leno inserted this comment after a joke.] You know what happened? NBC found four guns in my locker. I was suspended. [Kevin says, “I’m glad they didn’t find them in my locker.”] We will keep following this story….
[Later, Leno returns to NBC yet again.] The Justice Department announced they will conduct an anti-trust review of Comcast’s proposed deal to merge with NBC. An anti-trust review. Which is the relationship i have with NBC. Anti-trust. Hey Kev, what does NBC stand for? Never believe your contract.”
3RD UPDATE 4:40 PM: NBC just issued this statement regarding all the Conan speculation today:
“We have the best comedy team in the business. We remain committed to keeping Conan O’Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night line-up, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television.”
2ND UPDATE 4:15PM: It’s been a day filled with Internet rumors, NBC denials and non-denials, and the network talking out of both sides of its mouth. This has created an uproar around the futures of both The Jay Leno Show and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien while the network talks to both hosts and their reps about how to fix the mess that NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker set in motion. But, to quote the Pottery Barn rule, “You break it, you buy it.”
Here’s what I’ve learned: Last night, NBC Universal Television Entertainment chief Jeff Gaspin came to The Jay Leno Show and met for two hours with Jay and his executive producer Debbie Vickers. When the show’s staff arrived this morning, they were shocked to see in the conference room that the bigwigs had taken down all the booking cards scheduling guests after the February 12-28 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Panic ensued. The cards went back up. Then a staff meeting was held today assuring everyone that the show is not cancelled. But staff were told there’s a good likelihood the show could move to just Fridays or worse. Now no one on the show, or in Hollywood for that matter, believes NBC isn’t cancelling The Jay Leno Show in primetime at 10 PM. Especially after NBC, in response to Internet rumors, finally released a statement today that it’s looking for ways to “improve the performance” of the show after “affiliate issues”. (See below). Also, I know that the TV community is being told to bring NBC as much primetime drama development as possible because Leno’s 10 PM time period is returning to scripted programming. And NBC already has put several high level, high profile dramas in development. (See below)
Between the Television Critics Association meeting which starts on Saturday for the next two weeks, and an NBC affiliates’ board meeting on January 21st, NBC can’t let Leno stay in limbo. Especially not when he’s repped by the most powerful TV business lawyer in Hollywood, Ken Ziffren. But today Conan also was hung out to dry when NBC decided not to comment — and, thus, refused to deny – a TMZ report that Leno was returning to his old job as host of The Tonight Show. But insiders assure me that Conan O’Brien will not be pulled as Tonight Show host if and when Leno is moved back into late night. And not just because NBC triggers a huge $50M financial penalty to O’Brien if it doesn’t continue with him. After all, that’s chicken feed if the network decides that’s the only way to save its once invincible late night lineup. Then again, Conan, too, has a powerful rep — WME, the big Hollywood agency that does megabusiness with NBC.
Exactly in what time slot and with what show Leno come comes back to late night is still under discussion. But at this point, thanks to NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker’s terrible decisions, both Jay and Conan could well be damaged goods. It’s questionable whether Leno can bring back his late night audience after failing so humiliatingly in primetime. (Ugh, he looked so uncomfortable in that chair and even his monologue was dumbed down for primetime.) Or whether O’Brien has the right stuff to continue. (He regularly trails David Letterman in both viewership and advertiser-coveted demos). And third wheel Jimmy Fallon has been losing to Craig Ferguson.
11:45 AM UPDATE & 10 AM PREVIOUS: I’ve learned that NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker flew out to Los Angeles last night to take his about-to-be Comcast bosses Brian Roberts and Steve Burke today on a “meet-and-greet” tour of NBC Universal’s West Coast. “He’s doing breakfasts and lunches with teams out there,” a source tells me. “He arrived last night for a day of meetings.” He will fly back and then attend the all-important affiliates’ board meeting scheduled for January 21st (after, NBC sources say, it was postponed from December). But against this backdrop, the Internet is working overtime spreading reports that The Jay Leno Show is about to be drastically changed or yanked completely. That’s because the affiliates are upset about Leno as the lead-in to their local newscasts, most of whose ratings have suffering because of Jay’s late night numbers in 10 PM primetime. Those news shows have been cash cows for the O&Os and affiliates whose general managers are now spitting mad these profit centers are threatened. In fact, NBC just now took the unusual step of issuing a statement about the FTV Live report saying Leno’s show will be cancelled without at first issuing a straight denial, which came later from the network. Here’s the first NBC statement:
“Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance.”
From the first day it was conceived through the first day it aired (photo right by Jim Stevenson) and for months afterwards, there’s been speculation about what might happen to The Jay Leno Show given the the critics’ drubbing and the affiliates’ doubting. Among the changes chattered about, 1) It would no longer be 5 days a week in primetime and reduce to Mon-Wed-Fri or even less frequent, 2) It would become a 1/2 hour primetime show paired with another comedy, 3) It would move to 11 PM and affiliates would move news to 10 PM, and, of course 4) It’s toast.
Hollywood is betting that the decision will be reached either to reduce the number of Leno’s shows per week or, even more drastically, take the show off primetime entirely. The timing for change is expected after NBC’s Vancouver Winter Olympics uber-coverage from February 12-28. Already, the network has shown it wants to return to hour-long drama for the 10 PM slot by ordering development of several high-profile, high-priced shows. These include one from JJ Abrams and another from Jerry Bruckheimer as well as a rebooted Prime Suspect and Rockford Files, plus a Warner Bros TV project, and another high-level show yet to be determined. I could say all sorts of snarky things here about Zucker for presiding over this disaster. But I’d just be repeating myself.

Please, just take Jay Leno off the air.
NO NO Please dont do that we love him
sorry gramps
I loved Johnny Carson’s monologues and his skits after the first commercial. Jay Leno was a great heir to Carson. Conan O’Brien should be given the Captain Kangaroo franchise and his terrible sidekick is barely fit for the Mr. Greenjeans role. Conan sucks period. He is just terrible to watch. And I refuse to watch this horrible Harvard hooligan do terrible TV. Enough said. Can Conan and his terrible act for good.
Please, just take TopTwitsBlog off the internet.
I always find it amusing that when someone doesn’t like a particular thing, that magically they believe no else should either.
Good, They should yank it. It’s just terrible and surely a waste of money.
Jeff Zucker is just another NY Michael Eisner wanna-be, and how can you blame him?…Look how long Michael Eisner held Disney hostage to his endlessly raping ego (Remember Disney’s America, it would’ve been lucky to have played out as well as Disney’s California Adventure has…NOT!)…Hopefully Steve Burke at Comcast, who originally launched the Disney Stores, will spot the similiarities between Jeff and Michael and kick this extremely boring and suffocating loser to the curb before he wastes billions more of stockholders entertainment dollars…As far as Jay and Conan go, each HAS proven themselves in their own time and in their own way, and Jay is definitely a local hero with his car collection, but the current NBC TV schedule is definitely NOT the way to leverage either one of them, and no one believes in their heart of hearts that either one of them is a good replacement for Johnny Carson…CBS has come the closest, but even Letterman is not without his issues, he is an East Coast Guy, and he has really been showing his age lately…ABC is just happy at this point to feel like they are somewhat in the latenight game with Jimmy Kimmel, who would otherwise be holding down a similiar job with much smaller pay and audience on something like the Spike channel…What was that with TBS?/TNT? and George Lopez?, has that come and gone yet?…More and more, late night TV has turned into DVR catch-up time, gleefully fast-forwarding each and every commercial…
The funniest part of all this is the NBC statement saying Leno has performed exactly as anticipated. Even the late Mr. George Orwell would be surprised at that level of audacity.
They anticipated it would be one of the most famous failures in the history of TV but they did it anyway? Makes no sense. They anticipated that they were canceling the #1 show in the 11:30 timeslot to replace it with a show that gets less than half the ratings of its predecessor? I doubt it. They anticipated that this decision was so bad it would lead GE to want to dispose of the network? Ha Ha Ha.
Jeff Zucker is the biggest idiot in the history of TV, and the fact that he laughs all the way to the bank and the executive suite doesn’t change that. He destroyed the number one network and its number one show.
Exactly as we all anticipated he would.
LENO’S BACK TO LATE NIGHT’S VICINITY.
AND IT GOES DOWN WITH BITTER SALINITY
CONAN’S SCREWED IN A ROUT.
WHICH PROVES WITH NO DOUBT.
ZUCKER’S IQ IS NEGATIVE INFINITY.
No matter the time slot, I’m done with Jay. His hubris gave NBC an out from even considering scripted programs.
Conan is also a no watch for me now. I cringe more than laugh and would rather read or sleep or …
The best news of all: NBC must be open to more scripted programs and that should translate into more jobs. Thankfully, this train wreck only took a year.
I love Jay but his current product belongs on Comedy Central.
In terms of comedy, I like Conan better than Jay. However, something is off in Conan’s Tonight show setup. There is a feeling of spacial emptiness, with that studio he is in. Its almost like you can hear an echo when guests talk and there is a certain energy lost. When you look at Jay’s tonight show, even though I found his comedy not as clever, it always felt like one big party and there was a good atmosphere. Not sure if that’s the studio or production or what. Dave is in a bigger hall than Conan, but still it doesn’t feel as hollow as Conan’s studio. perhaps its just a sound issue, no idea.
I think you’re onto something. And also: I think all the outdoor on-the-lot segments that Conan is doing nonstop is psychologically backfiring. Sounds kind of silly at first, but think about it. Usually there’s an illusion among late night shows that they’re staying up late with you. And yet with all the broad daylight outdoor segments, we’re being constantly reminded that the show is taped, and thus stale and removed.
That was a very very smart post. I could never put my finger on why the “vibe” of that show was so off, but you just did. Spot on.
Dave does externals that show bright sunshine, but it works. I don’t know why it doesn’t work for Conan.
One difference, Dave is in NYC– which is more exciting and full of life. Conan is on the backlot in Burbank, it looks like an anonymous industrial park.
Also, enough with the AGEISM!
I’m 50 and not a big fan of Jay. Lately my fav is Jimmy Kimmel. Great monologues.
Something not mentioned here is NY vs. LA. Any talk show depends a LOT on its audience. Conan’s comedy seems to be a lot smarter than the general Universal Studios tour guest can pick up on. Conan’s smaller NY audience provided an energy he could play off of. In LA, he seems contrived and overworked. I feel strongly that he is the superior interviewer and has better comedy (I don’t understand the attraction of Jay at all, mind you, what’s funny about reading newspaper misprints and laughing at idiots on the street?), but Conan’s NY-developed format just isn’t working in LA. I think they should leave Conan at 11:30 Mon-Thurs but move him back to NY (where the Tonight Show used to be), and give Jay back his studio with a Friday-only show (like SNL but on Fridays).
Didn’t Conan have a clause where he would get $60 million if he did not get The Tonight Show by a certain date? I am pretty sure that’s why they got stuck in this mess.
I don’t mind Leno. I like Headlines and Man on Street, and some of his monologues and skits are indeed funny. On the other hand, Conan has done nothing funny other than Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. His “humor” might be funny at Harvard, but is certainly isn’t anywhere else.
You’re right…Conan is like the frat boy with the manic edge. He has never been funny to the outside world.
Oh, yeah, it takes a comedy mastermind to read newspaper bloopers. And oh, look at those dumb people! They are so funny! This stuff is gold…
I’m pro-Conan myself. If they did give him 12:30 back, I’d be sad he kind of got screwed but on the other hand, I miss the edginess that went with the 12:30 slot i.e.Masturbating Bear.
I know Conan had a play or pay deal with NBC with him getting the Tonight Show. Anyone familiar with the language of the deal. Now that NBC has “given” him the show can they take it back and not worry about the $10 mil or whatever it was?
I don’t mind NBC’s screw-ups. What I mind are hearing them spin their screw-ups like they are all some sort of master plan for the network. It’s been the SOP there for so long I don’t think they know what an actual success looks like anymore.
*When* Leno gets cancelled will anyone really be surprised?
Leno in primetime was brought to us by the deciders behind “Coupling,” the “no-pilot season” and moving hit shows such as “Heroes” around the schedule so much they were bound to fail.
As Les Moonves said recently: “Network television still is pretty darn strong.”
And it is. If you have great content. That’s repeatable. And sale-able. And you let creative people create and make creative decisions. And if you make the MBA guys crunch the numbers. And crunch the numbers only.
I predict that Twitter will crash shortly. Rumors, backed up by reliable sources, are flying about Leno returning to The Tonight Show. Simply search #Jay Leno on the site.
If this is true it is very welcome news for myself and my peers all of whom are in our 30′s. We cannot stand Conan O’Brien! He sucks. At least Leno appeals to all age groups. I have observed teen-agers laughing their heads off when he’s on. So get over yourselves already Leno haters.
I am taking all of this with a grain of salt though. I’ll believe it when I see Zucker wipe the egg off his face.
Dude or Dudette – I thought 30-somethings were the Conan-Lovers. I’ll tell U what… older folk don’t like him much… so if youse don’t like him, and we don’t like him… who is watching Conan? It ain’t my Granny.
JLS
Anybody who works in TV should know that late night show ratings go down as the show goes on… this is a rule, and that is why the musical acts always go on last.. These shows don’t have dramatic arcs that can tease the viewer to watch the ending. if Zucker had known anything about the TV business, he could have easily predicted that the 11pm news would suffer greatly, since everybody is used to watching Jay’s monologue and maybe his first guest, and then turning off the tv. Zucker is a no-talent who only succeeded at the Today Show because he was given Katie Couric and Matt Lauer as hosts!!!!! They would have been #1 with any producer!!!!!! the guy is not a creative person. A monkey could have picked better shows from all the talented people who were pitching to NBC.
MANAGING FOR MARGINS??
So what was the Jerry Seinfeld thing all about? A trial balloon to see if people would warm to the idea of getting rid of both Conan and Jay and replacing the two of them with Seinfeld as the host of a revamped Tonight Show?
Unfortunately, Jay Leno and Conan are both damaged goods. They have failed to pick up momentum and create a solid audience for their respective gigs. Why wouldn’t you bounce both of them and get one solid performer?
Jay was damaged by NBC with that coco contract 5 years ago. NBC has no idea what it is doing!
The decision to sack Conan would, I think, mark a sort of watershed moment in television history – the point where the broadcast networks lost the youth of America. Sacking a smart comedian beloved by educated 20-somethings to replace him with the smug dinosaur of Leno is just asking to hasten the day when the winner of the 11:30 timeslot is Stephen Colbert.
Right on. The only people that find Leno funny are stuffy 50+ republicans and cat ladys. Conan is gifted with natural humor. If you don’t get it, it’s simply because you’re old and out of touch with this post modern age. And good point about Colbert. I think alot of the ratings being sucked from NBC have to do with “the youth” moving to Comedy Central. Truth be told, while I love Conan, I usually opt for Stewart/Colbert. That used to still leave me the option to see Conan at 12:30…but now I have to choose. And frankly, the comedy central lineup is funnier than Conan at 11:30. Having said that, I routinely do tune in to Conan. He’s funny and deserving of Late Night. Even Jimmy Fallon, who flopped miserably at first, has rebounded strongly and is actually quite watchable, funny, and relatable now. This is a mess though…
OK Sean – you lost me here. I’m a proud liberal, very pro-Obama, college grad & live in a major East Coast city. I work in the legitimate theatre & am in my early 40s, & I find Jay far funnier than Conan. And unlike most people, I’m admitting that this is my opinion & not a fact. Opinions are not facts! But I just don’t get what people find funny about Conan. How is a masturbating bear funny for example? And, no, it’s not that I find it offensive. I just don’t find it funny. I like Jay, Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson, Bill Maher & was a huge George Carlin fan, so it’s not that I don’t like comedy. Just don’t get Conan…
Jay Leno is a terrible comedian. Any option that gets rid of him permanently is a good thing, not only for the sake of comedy, but for life itself.
Agreed – go back to making Doritos ads!
I see another site is reporting that Leno is going back to the 11:30 PM timeslot after the winter olympics. I really hope they keep Conan, because I think he is the future.
Leno should do the Bob Hope thing — a few specials each year.
Conan has been hurt from NBC wanting guests booked first on Leno, before offering them to Conan. Conan is getting sloppy seconds.
Gagscribe,
Sorry but I think you’re mistaken. Leno hasn’t been getting stellar guests at all. Hell, the other major networks and cable channels are forcing their actors to boycott the show.
I think you’re just trying to come up with a nonsense excuse for why Conan is floundering as host of the Tonight Show. Conan’s problems have nothing to do with the quality of the guests he’s been booking.
All of this reminds me of Norm Macdonald’s last panel on Conan’s 12:35 show, when he kept talking about how Jay Leno outfoxed Conan.
http://videogum.com/archives/late-night/norm-macdonald-on-conan_052001.html
Agreed that NBC has nothing to offer. They HAD a number of good shows, including “Life” and “Chuck,” the former canceled and the latter burnt-off at 13 episodes in the Spring. Stupid.
The idea that people would watch in sufficient numbers against a dirt-cheap show was stupid from the get-go, as was the predictable affiliate outrage. Yeah their local news was/is schlocky, but with stuff like even aging “ER” and “Life’ they still got enough viewers hanging around to get decent ratings thus ad revenue from their 11 pm telecasts.
NBC sought to make things cheaper for them by screwing the affiliates and got the predictable results. Including shooting themselves in the foot for their O&O stations.
Shia LaBoeuf as Rockford? Oh please. It will take over a decade to fix NBC’s lack of decent scripted shows, and NBC does not have a decade.
Conan O’Brien took over Leno’s timeslot, and did worse. Older viewers may be less desirable than younger ones, but they are the folks like it or not who watch at that hour, and there are more of them (birth dearth).
The problem for NBC is that being me-too aiming at young female viewers is fighting over the same group that CW, ABC, CBS, and a lot of the cable outlets fight over. The smart move for them (which is why they’ll never do it) would be to compete for the Fox/USA crowd by offering male-oriented action shows. Done by new folks, instead of the same tired old stuff from Abrams and company. They’ll also need patience — including a couple of years living with low ratings as they persuade burned male viewers that there stuff is like what you see on Fox or USA, only better. High quality at a decent production price is the key.
No one is going to come out of this unscathed, nor should they. Even if they put Leno back at 11:30, his ratings will never be what they were, and poor Conan O’Brien..
Nice to hear a lot of big names being tossed about for 10pm scripted shows, but know this: NBC has pissed off a whole community of writers, directors, producers and actors, and that resentment isn’t going to just melt away. Hollywood and New York want blood, and they want it to be Zucker’s.
The first network paychecks to staff-up will cure all cases of bad blood.
Granted, I haven’t watch too much of Jay’s 10pm show but I’m sure he has no more unfunny moments than either Conan or Dave. Sometimes jokes just bomb. Just like some programming experiments.
Jay needs to go back home to Tonight. Conan needs to just go.
Leno is so last decade..
Leno is so “last decade?” Who writes your material Victoria? My wife and I weren’t happy when NBC bumped Leno years ago. (The plan) Personally, I feel that Leno’s last two years on the Tonight show were his best. I was pleased when NBC brought him to the 9 PM slot, didn’t know it was all a bust. “Last Decade” is just fine for me Victoria, when do you get your braces removed?
Joe in Peoria IL
Last decade, as in last week? Leno was a performer of the 2000′s, indeed.
SO ARE YOU. CONAN SUCKS
I disagree. A format change is just needed.
Make Jay, Jay like he was with the tonight show. Desk and all, stop the driving and ten question thing and well the ratings will go up.
As for scripted drama, great for the writers etc. but it wont be Friends, Cosby etc and any show will be canceled like E-Ring and the other ” great shows”.
As for Conan he just needs a tweak too to beat out Letterman whose top ten list thing is so stale it need to be cut down to three.
Creative freedom generally means greater ratings.
