EXCLUSIVE: There can be no doubt in anybody's mind that Nicole Kidman's career is in deep, deep trouble. That's because, even though she's talented and used to make $16M-$17M for a lead role in a major studio movie, she's become poison at the box office -- the female equivalent of Sean Penn (but with botox...). So it's very understandable that she now feels the need for more career guidance. I've learned that Nicole has made a major change in her representation: she's become a client of Angeline Jolie's manager Guyer Kosinski of Media Talent Group.
Kidman, who just in July shook up her PR representation by firing her publicist of 15 years PMK/HBH's Catherine Olim, hasn't had a manager since her early days as an actress. She was with Mark Epstein (quite the character) until her career really took off and she went solely with CAA. Kidman is a longtime CAA client, first with Rick Nicita, then with Kevin Huvane. But is history about to repeat itself?
Because what's interesting here is that Kosinski took Angelina away from CAA. Before Jolie went to CAA in March 2005, she was represented by just the manager. When the pair decided she needed an agent, she met with every major tenpercentery in town, then chose CAA. But then Kosinski yanked her from the agency in April 2006 after she'd spent only 13 months there. Kosinski is known to be very controlling, very secretive, very involved with his clients' lives (and hates talking to the media). I'm really interested to see what happens next...
Please. Nobody ‘yanks,’ Angelina Jolie from anything. He’s her long time manager and friend, and a very VERY good one. Nicole is in good hands as well. Btw, Angie never intended to keep a PR guy. That CAA thing was always temporary while that whole ‘Brangelina,’ nonsense blew up. Angelina doesn’t have a rep – she only had a rep for a year, while the whole ‘Brangelina’ business hit press, and my guess is Brad, a CAA client at the time maybe advised it as well just so they’d be covered from the more ridiculous b.s. that’s out there. As we can see, that never went away. So what’s the point. I sure as sh*t wouldn’t have over 10% so some flack can jaw with In Touch magazine. Jolie prefers not to have one, so the assumption even then was that it was temporary until that mess blew over (like it ever did, lol) — and most people knew that. Your phrasing is odd, like Kosinksy is some kind of Svengali telling these very strong, independent women what to do. Riiiight. Hahahaha.
Nicole is a talented actress but she seems to lack a definitive image off screen. Will be interesting to see what type of roles Kosinski has in mind for her.
I tend to admire any actor who lacks a definitive image off screen. I think the tabloid stuff dilutes actors making it harder for them to step into roles in the eyes of their audience.
“Kosinski is known to be very controlling, very secretive, very involved with his clients’ lives (and hates talking to the media).” – I think she’s got one or more young kids so Kosinski is not a surprising choice if he is as described in this article.
As far as Kidman’s career, I thought she was taking time off for her kids and will likely start ramping. As far as “poison”, Penn has done alright and I’m sure Kidman will as well.
In all my years in the film business I have never dealt with a more duplicitous and sleathy person than Geyer Kosinski. He is called “geyer the liar” for a reason. We started off in the mail room at william morris togetherthis little integrity has gone so far. Sure says something about our business when a unebusiness that a man who has most likely never read a screenplay in his life can guide the careers of such notable talent. I can only imagine how embarrassed and upset caa is right now
Guyer has quite the animosity for William Morris (or at least he did in it’s former structure). Till this day though, I wonder what Media Talent really does all day, because it’s a very small office and Angelina and Billy Bob really can pick and choose what they want these days.
I wonder if Guyer has given up his dream of buying the Playboy Mansion. Probably not.
Here’s hoping she will rise to the top again…….
Forget the botox, I’m so distracted by the fact that it looks like she got punched in the mounth in all 3/4 and profile shots the way her top lip is swollen, I seriously cannot pay attention to the words coming out of her mouth. I therefor have no interest in seeing her in any parts, because I can’t enjoy and get lost in the movie.
If she wants to jump start her career revival, she should try and look like a real person – unless she wants to play overly done celbrity parts the rest of her life. Although even in Nine, where I thought her “work” might work for her, it was just too distracting to hear what she was saying.
No, the Botox is a major part of her problems.
Every time I see her, whether it’s in a movie or on TV like at an awards show, all I do is stare at her face to see if any part of it can move!
She’s 43 years old & had better realize that like Doris Day before her, smearing the lens with Vaseline & getting shot up with Botox just isn’t going to convince anyone she’s still an ingenue!
Grow up & age gracefully.
There’s nothing wrong with having some face work done, but don’t go the Joan Rivers or Bruce Jenner route & become a caricature of a human face.
Unindicted – You wrote exactly what I was thinking. There’s been so much on the gossip sites about her Botox that I’m totally distracted by her face and can’t concentrate on anything else when she’s on the screen.
In my office we call him ‘Guyer the Liar’
EVERYONE calls him Geyer the Liar.
Dear Nicole:
Start giving people hugs and stop getting so much botox… You’re so frickin icy on screen that even though you are a huge talent, you’re too chilling to watch! Brrrr. Also, you’re a beautiful woman and it would be awesome if we could actually see your face move even if it means seeing a wrinkle or two.
Either find another MALICE or warm up a little, k? Its been a rough couple of years for most people and they want to connect with a bit of warmth.
Many thanks.
She is so boring she doesn’t even register on my attention meter
Maybe her lack of a career at this point has something to do with the fact that she now has a reputation for delaying production and running up costs with her constant excuses for not being able to show for work. After a while you don’t want to hire that kind of person no matter how talented they may be. When their box office appeal fades….well, that becomes deadly. No manager/agent magic will fix that.
She was on the Haiti telethon tonight and her face is just–destroyed. She looks nothing at all anymore like the picture you posted. The junk in her face makes it impossible for her to show any emotions and like anti-trout pout said is too distracting.
New management isn’t going to help that.
Face destroyes??????????? are people just blind or what?!
Excellent…
Finally someone who can intelligently direct her into the right archetypical roles…
instead of the opposites of her own archetype … (that she has been previously playing)!
Nicole is a TRUE-hero Archetype…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and NOT the anti-hero archetypes she was always playing and BOMBING at previously!!!!!
NOW someone will make her take the true-hero roles instead of the anti-hero roles…!!!!!!
AND IF…SHE LISTENS!!!!…
SHE WILL FINALLY FULFILL HER POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!
and then the millions they pay her will be WELL spent!
Michael
Kidman surprised me by looking pretty nice face-wise on the Golden Globes. But tonight on the Haiti Charity event her face did not look so good. Don’t get me wrong — I’m pleased as hell she and everyone else made the charitable appearance, and I didn’t watch it with the intent of criticizing anyone’s looks, but in light of her career troubles and this news…
The public discomfort with out-of-control plastic surgery may have hit an unforgiving peak, and Kidman seems to be on the wrong side of this growing rejection of clearly/unflatteringly altered faces. What’s more, she’s a *really good actress*. It’s jarring that a really good actress has resorted to the extreme measures that maybe a less-talented and more-desperate actress might take. She may be getting judged particularly harshly because of this disconnect between her classy chops and her cheap look. Sorry, but jesus, she’s not that old and she looks like a puppet.
Also, she’s made baffling choices of films. She can choose better stuff, but that face… you can’t take that backwards. What a shame.
I think it’s funny that she wants a new manager instead of just being thankful for the fact she was incredibly overpaid by an industry that seems to take forever to realize what everyone in America knew from the beginning – she never put fannies in the seats. In fact she drove them away.
Maybe it’s time for Nicole to refocus on indie/studio specialty films for awhile. Work with Jane Campion again–or someone up-and-coming like Andrea Arnold (FISH TANK).
Avoid remakes and big-screen versions of TV series. Like the plague.
And think about guest-starring on prestige cable series like MAD MEN and/or IN TREATMENT.
OK Terry, you had me up until that last point…
is nip/tuck still on the air?
nicole kidman was great in the others –despite it being a rip-off of the sixth sense. she has talent. these actresses need to take a page out of the sigourney weaver playbook. she’s 60 and she looks great.
kidman looked great up until cold mountain. don’t know what happened. she’s only 40. and i don’t know why julia roberts laid into the botox during her 30s either. she looked positively freakish at the golden globes. and it’s sad sad. because these girls were lovely and are very very talented.
Terry McCarty, she IS focusing on indie and specialty films. She has “Rabbit Hole” from director John Cameron Mitchell and that’s out in 2010 plus “The Danish Girl” from Thomas Alfredson (”Let the Right One In”) hopefully in 2011. Both extremely indie and small. I always figured that was the second problem that people had with Kidman (after the botox). That she was really for for a few years and then started making – *gasp* – arthouse movies with strong upcoming directors. Movies like “Birth”, “Dogville”, “Fur” and “Margot at the Wedding”, the movies that is best in. And she’s such a hard actress to pin down to big budget movies like “Bewitched” or “Stepford Wives” since that’s just not her strongest area.
I think Nicole Kidman is one of the best living actresses out there, and definitely one of the bravest and most versatile.
She likes to take risky roles (Eyes wide shut, To die for, Dogville, Birth, Fur, The Human Stain), she likes to try different genres (Moulin Rouge!, The Others, Bewitched, Cold Mountain, The Hours, The Interpreter etc.) and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that even if they aren’t alway blockbusters (although frankly several of them clearly weren’t meant for larger audiences)
Yes, her movies – especially recently – weren’t hits in the US – also several of them made up for it on the international circuit – and her drastic appearance changes were completely unneccessary (with her slender, tall figure she had – and still has – a very good chance to age beautifully).
I think the minute she decides to maintain a natural look (change back the mouth and lay off the botox) she will be GREAT again.
She is insanely talented, her performances in To die for, Moulin Rouge, The Others, The Hours are ICONIC.
I hope she will be in better hands because frankly whoever was her agent or manager, did a lousy job in the recent years.
Good Luck !!!
P.S. The Rabbit Hole and The Danish Girl seem promising to me.
“Geyer the liar” is flat out the worst person in this business. He has no talent, no brains, and zero integrity. good luck Nicole!
Well, it definitely seems like the right thing to do.
Angelina Jolie was in a very similar place back then : talented, beautiful Oscar-winner who was claimed to be Box Office-poison after several, consecutive flops (Original Sin, Taking Lives, Beyond Borders, Alexander, Sky Captain, TR2, Life or something like it).
And if this guy could turn it around for her, I think she could do the same for Kidman. She would definitely deserve it based on her acting talent.
“she’s become poison at the box office — the female equivalent of Sean Penn (but with botox…).”
Oh, Nikki, this is too funny! Bless your sense of sharp humor!
Kidman`s problem is that she isn`t Sandra Bullock or Meryl Streep and yet she is trying to be the leading lady whose name alone should sell the movie. That doesn`t fly just like it wouldn`t fly if Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet tried to open a movie. But these ladies are smarter (or at least their agency is) in that that they know their boxoffice power is zero so they do arthouse movies that get awards attention but aren`t expected to do Avatar numbers, and/or co-star in established franchises (Blanchett in Indiana Jones 4) that can`t miss at the boxoffice.
In short, Kidman is wrongly positioned as a movie star (opening power) when she really isn`t one, or at least isn`t in North America (some reports say her movies do well overseas). That creates unrealistic expectations such as that something like Von Trier`s Dogville should open when this type of a movie never does. And Nine really isn`t her fault for boming considering it was mostly advertised to the general public as a Kate Hudson movie, since she did the most press (and mostly answering A-Rod questions) and her Mambo Italiano number was re-played ad nauseum. Now that`s another “star” that has low opening power yet Hollywood keeps shoveling her down our throats.
Kidman`s botox, however, is a problme. It`s distracting and all people talk about when her movies get advertisied. “Just saw a trailer/TV spot for that movie with Nicole Kidman and HER FACE DOESN`T MOVE!” is the “buzz” that her movies are getting. She wasn`t a draw before Botox but now she`s even less and yet her paycheck and budgets of her movies remain big. Jolie`s agency won`t help much.
Really, this story of the botox is ridiculous..that’s enough. she looked very well lately. is quite annoying how the only way to jude her is a gossip story. in nine she was beautiful.
she’s a great actress and a big worldwide star, more than jolie. so, stop it to make fun of her.
Guyer the Liar is a scumbag even by agent standards. The only bigger scumbags? CAA. I wish that hosey Nicole well.
This devaluing of Kidman’s career is ridiculous. Deep deep trouble? lol. Venom vipera Nikki Finke should take her foolish considerations for herself sometimes.
And comments? Gosh, can people be more stupid? Don’t think so. It’s not the first time she insults Kidman in this way. I think she should stop to look like a Perez Hilton’s copy without grammatical mistakes.
More I see her blamed more I feel myself motivated to take her defence. Her latest two movies earned 583 millions dollars worldwide, they’re not Avatar numbers but not a complete disaster to call her “poison”: how many female movie stars can make these numbers? Very few. AND it’s not her guilt if her perfomance in MATW was completely ignored. And don’t say “it’s the botox”, because now this is story is beyond ridiculous. She’s just underrated. Whatever Nicole does or says is always wrong or not “good enough”. Even with the perfect movie she will be always marginalized.
I think it’s absurd someone like Kidman needs to be defended when a lot of actors are in a worse position like Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, but nobody finds funny insulting them.
Kidman is not at her the best but she’s neither the last of the latest, give her some credit.
I don’t get all the Nicole Kidman hate. I hope this sistuation will end soon. Seeing a great gifted actress considered like a common Meg Ryan (tath’s the kind of face completely destroyed by plastic surgery not Kidman’s) is atrocious. As a film lover and as a woman.
Anyway, Kidman’s rep is L. Dart, glad to hear she has Kosinski also. But I repeat, whatever she does is wrong. So whatever…She could even be rappresented by my cat, at this point.
stop botox and ice princess idea!
Hey, Nicole, I know you are probably still smarting from having your stand-in be better looking than you. It’s still no excuse for treating people like shit. Insecurity is a bitch.
When your cosmetic surgery has surpassed your ability to bring truth to a character it may be time to hang it up. You’re heading into Rivers/Rourke territory.
Kidman can’t act. Period. There’s no emotional depth or resonance to her performers.Hollywood has been hyping and hyping and hyping her. But I work in the magazine business and I can tell you that every time she’s on the cover, they’re terrible sellers.
can’t figure out why nobody’s on it already – get Kidman to lean into her iciness, Deneuve style, in a remake of the Hunger..the woman’s gotta play a vampire sometime
This devaluing of Kidman’s career is ridiculous. Deep deep trouble? lol.

I agree, Nicole should lay off the botox *and* pick better roles for herself, but what I wish more than anything is that women would not have this kind of pressure put on them. There are only so many roles out there for actresses over 40, or 30 for that matter, and Nicole and all the other cosmetic surgery addicts are just trying to stay in the game. Look at movies like Yes Man. Jim Carrey is an older guy, but the actress they got to play his love interest is Zoe Dechanel? This happens all the time and it’s commonplace. Rip on Nicole’s face all you want, but the really sick thing is this industry which drives women to destroy their natural beauty in order to stay relevant.
Cookie, you have a valid point. Seems like the standard age gap formula for a love interest is LEADING MAN- 20 years = LEADING LADY. Still no reason to go destroy your face.
this is a whole new career low for Nicole. Putting Guyer’s bad reputation aside, He has made so many awful career choices for Angelina.
Besides ditching the botox (remember how beautiful she was when she had freckles and red hair?), she needs to distance herself from Harvey Weinstein. Horribly miscast in Nine. Take a page from Matt Damon’s book–never go back.
THE OTHERS was not a rip-off of THE SIXTH SENSE. Alejandro Amenábar was working on the script before THE SIXTH SENSE was released.
Kidman proclaims she doesn’t care about box office and doesn’t use botox (and that Tom Cruise was her love drug… see the old Vanity Fair interview in which she was obviously spinning for his benefit). All the lies make her unappealing. As do her movie choices. How many will pay to see this one:
Gwyneth Paltrow will join Nicole Kidman in The Danish Girl, an adaptation of the David Ebershoff novel about the first post-operative transsexual.
Hells no.
I won’t see this, but who is the transexual? Paltrow or kidman?
I’m voting for Kidman. Her man-made face could be an asset in a post-op trany role. That could be working from her wheelhouse.
As far as I remember Guyer Kosinski got his real break at Industry Entertainment with Keith Addis. Then he left Keith and took “his” clients with him… and did not grow since… wonder why?!?! What will happen when Angelina drops him…
This happens when women hit the 40 ceiling. Paging Norma Desmond? Perhaps she should try to emanate more warmth and then perhaps she’d be more castable.
This is interesting. From what I understood, Kosinski takes on very, very few clients. The better to be extremely hands-on, I guess. This makes me wonder if indeed Angelina is planning on pulling back a bit on her career. Perhaps she told him that he’d be having more free time in the future.
“Geyer the liar” does it again.
Ms. Kidman is an odd one to figure out and the facial enhancements are unfortunate, but she was awesome in BIRTH.
I was just gonna say the same thing. I can’t imagine anyone else being a better fit for that part. Angelina kind of did her own version of that in Changeling and let’s be honest, it did NOT work.
Still Nicole is in a bit of a hole and needs to do ensemble stuff for A+ level directors. Decent suggestion re:TV but I don’t know if Mad Men would even WANT her at this point. She’d be very distracting in that show. True Blood is a better match.
Guyer Kosinski is by far one of the biggest tools in the industry. Yes, he’s a good looking guy, yes, he is very successful, and yes, people are charmed by him, but when I tell you the guy is a self indulged douchbag, that doesn’t even begin to explain who this man really is. And if anyone thinks he has anything to do with Angelina Jolie’s success, then you’re a retard!!! That all said, by hook or crook, clearly he is doing something right. The idea of figuring out why certain events occur in Hollywood is a waste of time, liars, usually finish first, but that is no reason to follow that path. There are good people in this business that do things the right way. You have to decide which group you want to be associated with, its that simple…
Well, please name one lit agent/manager who is known for ruthless honesty, in your opinion… That’s the person to career-wed for life, imho.
I’ve been on the hunt for weeks now … and I haven’t encountered one who has told me the truth – that the aversion to my film has nothing to do with the strength of the project … and everything to do with the “faux pas” of trying to push a film with an Arabic angle to a mostly Jewish community.
The most honesty I’ve gotten is … the project is great/high concept/thrilling but “this one just isn’t for us.” Same exact comment from two different guys….And the one bite I did get happened to be from a guy with an Arabic surname. (I checked.)
I simply wrote an authentic film, without ever being aware of the hidden politics. And I’m glad I was blissfully ignorant, because the art would have been diluted, if I had been more PC. But hey, welcome to town, kiddo. Glad to be in the game, so can’t complain.
But hopefully, because of projects like mine, setting possible precedents, down the line … maybe a powerful community will begin to examine some of the practices that lead to certain artistic voices being strangled out … because of old prejudices and bad blood. The tapestry of the industry could only become more beautiful, with diverse points of view coloring it.
Wow. You brought the conversation around to your unrecognized genius and one of a kind script, instead of anything we were talking about.
Welcome to town. You fit right in.
Well, what shocked me out from under my rock to post was how Kosinski’s singled out for being a liar, when truth is always relative. It differs according to the tellers’ (self) interests. A creative relationship with the truth is almost a necessity if one is to succeed, imo. It’s called moving & shaking … desk-dancing.
And if you’re saying the status quo in the town is “ego” – I definitely *won’t* fit in. A humble genius is anonymous.
Oh please. If botox were a factor to exclude Hollywood women from opportunities, every woman in this town wouldn’t be working. News flash: Even the 20 year olds get it.
Nicole is just not a good actress. I’ve never seen a film where she was good. She had the magic of Tom Cruise and now she doesn’t. Having to stand on her own two feet, we’re back to her basically sucking as an actress. I mean come on, Nicole Kidman in My Life is some of the WORST acting ever.
She only went anywhere because Cruise, just like Katie Holmes.
Can’t argue with you…except for To Die For. Great performance, indisputably. Maybe it was because she was playing a cold sociopath and it wasn’t much of a stretch, but there’s no denying she pulled it off well.
Didnt CAA put her and three other actresses in NINE? Talking about putting your eggs in one TERRIBLE basket.
Why does everyone know Kidman’s Botox is a mess except for her. I mean, where are these people’s friends? I just don’t get how our beloved actresses from her to Meg Ryan destroy themselves. It’s the oddest thing. It makes no sense. These are people we love.
I respect Geyer for having the career he’s managed to have. He makes millions from only a few clients and keeps tight control of them – and making them feel cared for all the same. I think they, his clients, don’t seem to care what a scumby he is (have experienced this first hand…). Basically he has no heart. But I wonder, is that what’s making him the success he is in Hollywood?
Nicole is yawntastic. It’s hard to imagine her playing any interesting character, ever. She needs to play something like a lesbian serial killer / bankrobber / rapist with lots of noise, cars, guns, and hand to hand combat.
Geyer was one of the first people to call me when I got laid off from the WMA /Endeavor merger because he wanted to make sure I was alright and offered to help me in any way. I will always appreciate that. After getting laid off you want to hear from those you do business with. When most people didn’t call he did and was genuine about everything we spoke about. He is a smart man who is very successful. Call him what you want, but he’s getting things done and making A LOT of money. Geyer, good for you! I’m happy for you…Nicole is fantastic and I know you will work your quick witted skills and charm to get her into a great film.
Her best movie by far was Gus Van Sant’s to Die For (1995). Second best was the thriller with Sam Neill and Billy Zane. Days of Thunder comes in third. And That’s it. Everything else is awful. The Campion Portrait of a Lady was craptastic, really, really bad, she was miscant. She’s been miscast in everything. The Oscar for the awful Woolf drag in The Hours should be taken back and given to Faye Dunaway for Mommie Dearest.
Maybe he can get her an action flick to restore her or return her to demo that made her a star in the first place: the Tom Cruise crowd of guys. She’s just awful in women’s films.
Sorry, this girl was never talented she just rode the Australian wave in off the great barrier reef and was media-created.
I cannot for the life of me ever imagine having sex with the Nicster. I would prefer waking up in the morning to an albino blow-up doll. She is to acting what anti-matter is to physics: a black hole.
Why this woman gets any roles at all is beyond me. She has an inflated view of herself, yet she can’t draw people into theaters. What puzzles me is why Hollywood continues to give her so much work. Let’s just say when it comes to acting talent, she’s no Debra Winger- an actress who took real emotional risks.
Not meaning to sound crappy to Kidman, but I don’t think it’s the manager’s fault for her string of bombs. She just simply doesn’t earn the salary she demands anymore.
In truth Kidman, who I feel IS a talented and risk taking actress, ascended to the A-list for pretty much the wrong reason and that was due to the public sympathy she garnered in the wake of her divorce from Cruise. Once she had her Oscar the public obsession with her faded and the result has been seven years of pictures no one outside her hardcore fanbase cares about (even tellingly the big commericial ones she has done).
Agreed. People love an underdog, and pitting exes against each other. It’s the only reason Bigelow’s name is being blown up to Cameron-level proportions, imo. Bigelow’s film is great, but compared to one that advanced the medium practically light years … there’s really no comparison. It’s like upholding a Polaroid over the Mona Lisa.
But I think Kidman’s a great actress … loved her since “To Die For.” Her marriage to Cruise was a double-edged sword. It got her star brilliantly glowing, but also left her overshadowed. Thus once the heavenly body next to her aligned elsewhere … people have no reference point from which to view her. They’ve forgotten where to look.
Yeah in saying that there’s always a tiny cynical part of me that thinks she milked the sympathy card in interviews when it became clear that, at least according to the tabloids, she was the ‘victim’ in the seperation knowing that finally it would help her break out of Cruise’s shadow.
And if any part of that IS true then she only has herself to blame because in the end the public weren’t rooting for her because they particularly liked her or realised that a potentially great talent had been buried. They simply felt sorry for her because of press that, four years before he did a spot of couch-jumping, portrayed her ex-husband as an eccentric douchebag.
THE LAST TIME THE TERM {BOX OFFICE POISON} WAS USED FOR A BIG STAR WAS JOAN CRAWFORD, WHO IS BEST KNOWN BY THE MOVIE ABOUT HER LIFE{MOMMY DEAREST} .I BELIEVE CRAWFORD, AFTER BEING CONSIDERED A HAS BEEN, CAME BACK TO WIN THE BEST ACTRESS ACADEMY AWARD FOR THE MOVIE, MILDRID PIECE. I BELIEVE THE SAME WILL HAPPEN FOR KIDMAN IF SHE CAN BE FITTED TO THE RIGHT PROPERTY.
Shhhh, Joe. Use your inside voice.
