EXCLUSIVE: There can be no doubt in anybody’s mind that Nicole Kidman’s career is in deep, deep trouble. That’s because, even though she’s talented and used to make $16M-$17M for a lead role in a major studio movie, she’s become poison at the box office — the female equivalent of Sean Penn (but with botox…). So it’s very understandable that she now feels the need for more career guidance. I’ve learned that Nicole has made a major change in her representation: she’s become a client of Angeline Jolie’s manager Guyer Kosinski of Media Talent Group.
Kidman, who just in July shook up her PR representation by firing her publicist of 15 years PMK/HBH’s Catherine Olim, hasn’t had a manager since her early days as an actress. She was with Mark Epstein (quite the character) until her career really took off and she went solely with CAA. Kidman is a longtime CAA client, first with Rick Nicita, then with Kevin Huvane. But is history about to repeat itself?
Because what’s interesting here is that Kosinski took Angelina away from CAA. Before Jolie went to CAA in March 2005, she was represented by just the manager. When the pair decided she needed an agent, she met with every major tenpercentery in town, then chose CAA. But then Kosinski yanked her from the agency in April 2006 after she’d spent only 13 months there. Kosinski is known to be very controlling, very secretive, very involved with his clients’ lives (and hates talking to the media). I’m really interested to see what happens next…
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Kidman can’t act. Period. There’s no emotional depth or resonance to her performers.Hollywood has been hyping and hyping and hyping her. But I work in the magazine business and I can tell you that every time she’s on the cover, they’re terrible sellers.
can’t figure out why nobody’s on it already – get Kidman to lean into her iciness, Deneuve style, in a remake of the Hunger..the woman’s gotta play a vampire sometime
This devaluing of Kidman’s career is ridiculous. Deep deep trouble? lol.
More I see her blamed more I feel myself motivated to take her defence. Her latest two movies earned 583 millions dollars worldwide, they’re not Avatar numbers but not a complete disaster to call her “poison”: how many female movie stars can make these numbers? Very few. AND it’s not her guilt if her perfomance in MATW was completely ignored. And don’t say “it’s the botox”, because now this is story is beyond ridiculous. She’s just underrated. Whatever Nicole does or says is always wrong or not “good enough”. Even with the perfect movie she will be always marginalized.
I think it’s absurd someone like Kidman needs to be defended when a lot of actors are in a worse position like Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, but nobody finds funny insulting them.
Kidman is not at her the best but she’s neither the last of the latest, give her some credit.
I don’t get all the Nicole Kidman hate. I hope this sistuation will end soon. Seeing a great gifted actress considered like a common Meg Ryan (tath’s the kind of face completely destroyed by plastic surgery not Kidman’s) is atrocious. As a film lover and as a woman.
Anyway, Kidman’s rep is L. Dart, glad to hear she has Kosinski also. But I repeat, whatever she does is wrong. So whatever…She could even be rappresented by my cat, at this point. Just hope Kosinski will give her different roles…Not the tipycal Jolie spy role.
I agree, Nicole should lay off the botox *and* pick better roles for herself, but what I wish more than anything is that women would not have this kind of pressure put on them. There are only so many roles out there for actresses over 40, or 30 for that matter, and Nicole and all the other cosmetic surgery addicts are just trying to stay in the game. Look at movies like Yes Man. Jim Carrey is an older guy, but the actress they got to play his love interest is Zoe Dechanel? This happens all the time and it’s commonplace. Rip on Nicole’s face all you want, but the really sick thing is this industry which drives women to destroy their natural beauty in order to stay relevant.
Cookie, you have a valid point. Seems like the standard age gap formula for a love interest is LEADING MAN- 20 years = LEADING LADY. Still no reason to go destroy your face.
this is a whole new career low for Nicole. Putting Guyer’s bad reputation aside, He has made so many awful career choices for Angelina.
Besides ditching the botox (remember how beautiful she was when she had freckles and red hair?), she needs to distance herself from Harvey Weinstein. Horribly miscast in Nine. Take a page from Matt Damon’s book–never go back.
THE OTHERS was not a rip-off of THE SIXTH SENSE. Alejandro Amenábar was working on the script before THE SIXTH SENSE was released.
Kidman proclaims she doesn’t care about box office and doesn’t use botox (and that Tom Cruise was her love drug… see the old Vanity Fair interview in which she was obviously spinning for his benefit). All the lies make her unappealing. As do her movie choices. How many will pay to see this one:
Gwyneth Paltrow will join Nicole Kidman in The Danish Girl, an adaptation of the David Ebershoff novel about the first post-operative transsexual.
Hells no.
I won’t see this, but who is the transexual? Paltrow or kidman?
I’m voting for Kidman. Her man-made face could be an asset in a post-op trany role. That could be working from her wheelhouse.
As far as I remember Guyer Kosinski got his real break at Industry Entertainment with Keith Addis. Then he left Keith and took “his” clients with him… and did not grow since… wonder why?!?! What will happen when Angelina drops him…
This happens when women hit the 40 ceiling. Paging Norma Desmond? Perhaps she should try to emanate more warmth and then perhaps she’d be more castable.
This is interesting. From what I understood, Kosinski takes on very, very few clients. The better to be extremely hands-on, I guess. This makes me wonder if indeed Angelina is planning on pulling back a bit on her career. Perhaps she told him that he’d be having more free time in the future.
“Geyer the liar” does it again.
Ms. Kidman is an odd one to figure out and the facial enhancements are unfortunate, but she was awesome in BIRTH.
I was just gonna say the same thing. I can’t imagine anyone else being a better fit for that part. Angelina kind of did her own version of that in Changeling and let’s be honest, it did NOT work.
Still Nicole is in a bit of a hole and needs to do ensemble stuff for A+ level directors. Decent suggestion re:TV but I don’t know if Mad Men would even WANT her at this point. She’d be very distracting in that show. True Blood is a better match.
Guyer Kosinski is by far one of the biggest tools in the industry. Yes, he’s a good looking guy, yes, he is very successful, and yes, people are charmed by him, but when I tell you the guy is a self indulged douchbag, that doesn’t even begin to explain who this man really is. And if anyone thinks he has anything to do with Angelina Jolie’s success, then you’re a retard!!! That all said, by hook or crook, clearly he is doing something right. The idea of figuring out why certain events occur in Hollywood is a waste of time, liars, usually finish first, but that is no reason to follow that path. There are good people in this business that do things the right way. You have to decide which group you want to be associated with, its that simple…
Well, please name one lit agent/manager who is known for ruthless honesty, in your opinion… That’s the person to career-wed for life, imho.
I’ve been on the hunt for weeks now … and I haven’t encountered one who has told me the truth – that the aversion to my film has nothing to do with the strength of the project … and everything to do with the “faux pas” of trying to push a film with an Arabic angle to a mostly Jewish community.
The most honesty I’ve gotten is … the project is great/high concept/thrilling but “this one just isn’t for us.” Same exact comment from two different guys….And the one bite I did get happened to be from a guy with an Arabic surname. (I checked.)
I simply wrote an authentic film, without ever being aware of the hidden politics. And I’m glad I was blissfully ignorant, because the art would have been diluted, if I had been more PC. But hey, welcome to town, kiddo. Glad to be in the game, so can’t complain.
But hopefully, because of projects like mine, setting possible precedents, down the line … maybe a powerful community will begin to examine some of the practices that lead to certain artistic voices being strangled out … because of old prejudices and bad blood. The tapestry of the industry could only become more beautiful, with diverse points of view coloring it.
Wow. You brought the conversation around to your unrecognized genius and one of a kind script, instead of anything we were talking about.
Welcome to town. You fit right in.
Well, what shocked me out from under my rock to post was how Kosinski’s singled out for being a liar, when truth is always relative. It differs according to the tellers’ (self) interests. A creative relationship with the truth is almost a necessity if one is to succeed, imo. It’s called moving & shaking … desk-dancing.
And if you’re saying the status quo in the town is “ego” – I definitely *won’t* fit in. A humble genius is anonymous.
Oh please. If botox were a factor to exclude Hollywood women from opportunities, every woman in this town wouldn’t be working. News flash: Even the 20 year olds get it.
Nicole is just not a good actress. I’ve never seen a film where she was good. She had the magic of Tom Cruise and now she doesn’t. Having to stand on her own two feet, we’re back to her basically sucking as an actress. I mean come on, Nicole Kidman in My Life is some of the WORST acting ever.
She only went anywhere because Cruise, just like Katie Holmes.
Can’t argue with you…except for To Die For. Great performance, indisputably. Maybe it was because she was playing a cold sociopath and it wasn’t much of a stretch, but there’s no denying she pulled it off well.
Didnt CAA put her and three other actresses in NINE? Talking about putting your eggs in one TERRIBLE basket.
Why does everyone know Kidman’s Botox is a mess except for her. I mean, where are these people’s friends? I just don’t get how our beloved actresses from her to Meg Ryan destroy themselves. It’s the oddest thing. It makes no sense. These are people we love.
I respect Geyer for having the career he’s managed to have. He makes millions from only a few clients and keeps tight control of them – and making them feel cared for all the same. I think they, his clients, don’t seem to care what a scumby he is (have experienced this first hand…). Basically he has no heart. But I wonder, is that what’s making him the success he is in Hollywood?
Nicole is yawntastic. It’s hard to imagine her playing any interesting character, ever. She needs to play something like a lesbian serial killer / bankrobber / rapist with lots of noise, cars, guns, and hand to hand combat.
Geyer was one of the first people to call me when I got laid off from the WMA /Endeavor merger because he wanted to make sure I was alright and offered to help me in any way. I will always appreciate that. After getting laid off you want to hear from those you do business with. When most people didn’t call he did and was genuine about everything we spoke about. He is a smart man who is very successful. Call him what you want, but he’s getting things done and making A LOT of money. Geyer, good for you! I’m happy for you…Nicole is fantastic and I know you will work your quick witted skills and charm to get her into a great film.
Her best movie by far was Gus Van Sant’s to Die For (1995). Second best was the thriller with Sam Neill and Billy Zane. Days of Thunder comes in third. And That’s it. Everything else is awful. The Campion Portrait of a Lady was craptastic, really, really bad, she was miscant. She’s been miscast in everything. The Oscar for the awful Woolf drag in The Hours should be taken back and given to Faye Dunaway for Mommie Dearest.
Maybe he can get her an action flick to restore her or return her to demo that made her a star in the first place: the Tom Cruise crowd of guys. She’s just awful in women’s films.
Sorry, this girl was never talented she just rode the Australian wave in off the great barrier reef and was media-created.
I cannot for the life of me ever imagine having sex with the Nicster. I would prefer waking up in the morning to an albino blow-up doll. She is to acting what anti-matter is to physics: a black hole.
Why this woman gets any roles at all is beyond me. She has an inflated view of herself, yet she can’t draw people into theaters. What puzzles me is why Hollywood continues to give her so much work. Let’s just say when it comes to acting talent, she’s no Debra Winger- an actress who took real emotional risks.
Not meaning to sound crappy to Kidman, but I don’t think it’s the manager’s fault for her string of bombs. She just simply doesn’t earn the salary she demands anymore.
In truth Kidman, who I feel IS a talented and risk taking actress, ascended to the A-list for pretty much the wrong reason and that was due to the public sympathy she garnered in the wake of her divorce from Cruise. Once she had her Oscar the public obsession with her faded and the result has been seven years of pictures no one outside her hardcore fanbase cares about (even tellingly the big commericial ones she has done).
Agreed. People love an underdog, and pitting exes against each other. It’s the only reason Bigelow’s name is being blown up to Cameron-level proportions, imo. Bigelow’s film is great, but compared to one that advanced the medium practically light years … there’s really no comparison. It’s like upholding a Polaroid over the Mona Lisa.
But I think Kidman’s a great actress … loved her since “To Die For.” Her marriage to Cruise was a double-edged sword. It got her star brilliantly glowing, but also left her overshadowed. Thus once the heavenly body next to her aligned elsewhere … people have no reference point from which to view her. They’ve forgotten where to look.
Yeah in saying that there’s always a tiny cynical part of me that thinks she milked the sympathy card in interviews when it became clear that, at least according to the tabloids, she was the ‘victim’ in the seperation knowing that finally it would help her break out of Cruise’s shadow.
And if any part of that IS true then she only has herself to blame because in the end the public weren’t rooting for her because they particularly liked her or realised that a potentially great talent had been buried. They simply felt sorry for her because of press that, four years before he did a spot of couch-jumping, portrayed her ex-husband as an eccentric douchebag.
