I reported months ago that Sony Television, which has had considerable success hawking the syndicated talk show starring Oprah discovery Dr. Oz, was going to pimp still another Harpo discovery, Chicago designer and decorator Nate Berkus. Well, now it’s sold. A deal was concluded late last night between Sony TV and NBC Universal that will put the The Nate Berkus Show on NBC O&O’s [owned and operated] TV stations in major markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago. Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, San Diego, Miami and Hartford.
It’s a comfortable base for the new syndicated strip series, and similar to the way that the ABC O&O’s form the backbone for Oprah’s own syndicated program. It’s also something of a consolation prize for Sony TV which was desperate to replace CBS as the syndicator of The Oprah Winfrey Show for its next go-round in the marketplace.
You see, Sony’s co-production and distribution of the Dr. Oz Show was considered a dress rehearsal for the daytime diva. Alas, I broke the news that Oprah would announce she was stopping her syndicated show in 2011 to devote herself to OWN, the long-delayed Oprah Winfrey Network which is replacing Discovery Health on cable. So Sony TV got screwed. Nevertheless, Berkus may have an easier time in syndication because at least one two direct daytime competitors. Martha Stewart, announced last week her show will leave syndication after finding a home on the Hallmark Channel. And in December, Warner Bros pulled the plug on its syndication of the ratings-challenged Bonnie Hunt Show because its 2-year deal with NBC-owned stations was coming to an end. Yeah, that’s how tough the daytime syndie market has been in recent years. Little wonder that attendees described the just concluded NATPE confab as a ghost town.

Nate is a winner all the way. Great taste, appealing to men and women, he’s a slam dunk in the programming department and a familiar face to so many already. This should be an easy sell.
IT IS ALSO BEING DOUBLE PUMPED ON OWN–BOTH OZ AND NATE WILL APPEAR ON THE OWN SCHEDULE SINCE THEY CAN’T DEVELOP ANY PROGRAMMING ON THEIR OWN!!!!
YOU HEARD IT HEAR FIRST…SO TOLDJA!!!
OK, Martha Stewart could not make in syndication but Nate Berkus will? Harpo has a zero track record in show development, with the exception of Oz which one season does not a success make. Nate was TERRIBLE on the Friday shows where he sat in and was DREADFUL on “The Big Give” which was one of the worst shows in the history of ABC. Hell its belonged on NBC! Trust me two seasons and out with Nate…
There was talk several years ago that Paige Davis Page was going to work with Nate, for Oprah. I think the Nate’s misfortune with the loss of his lover might have derailed that idea.
Home decor, an hour day will be hard to produce. I didn’t think Oz could come up with content everyday but he has, and I’d rather watch hottie Berkus any day than Dr. O’ fondling a diseased liver on the table.
clint
The daytime landscape has changed SO much in just the past 10 years. Do you really think this guy’s format will prove to be successful in this daytime climate? I am skeptical. If anything, Sony will pay loads of money to build Nate’s set, only to have Oprah snatch his program up for OWN in a few years. On the other hand, all of Oprah’s friends have had successful daytime shows so far…
Is this essentially NBC’s replacement for the canceled Bonnie Hunt show that was on a lot of their O&O’s before? At other times I would be worried this is a replacement for “Days of our Lives” but with the ratings upswing of the last year that show seems safer than it has been in years and since Sony produces DOOL as well I wouldn’t think Sony would sell Berkus to replace one of their soaps.
Two words doofus:
Dr. Phil
A few points and corrections to other statements.
1. Harpo is responsible for Dr. Phil, Rachel Ray and Dr. Oz. They clearly have a good track record….probably the best track record in daytime syndication where only 1 in 10 shows succeed.
2. NBC O&O daytime have two time periods to fill…Bonnie Hunt’s and Martha’s. By the way, Martha Stewart was essentially a time buy on the the NBC stations. And also, Martha would never have been a competitor to Berkus….they would have been on the same stations.
3. If Oprah stayed on the air in syndication, her deal with CBS (they bought King World) would have gone on forever. No way would Sony have ever gotten the distribution on that show.
And don’t forget about Deal or no Deal not coming back into syndication this fall. I believe, (not 100% sure)that most of the NBC O&O’s also carried that show. If this is the case, that leaves 3 hours to fill. 2 have now been filled with this show (Nate Berkus) and the Real Housewives.
This is perfectly in line with Sony’s recent strategy of starfucking and chasing after other people’s success rather than developing the original content that used to be why anyone bothered answering their calls. These days, their “senior” management has zero creative vision – but they sure do know how to bleed cash. Why risk success when you can buy a really impressive fail?
That Nate Berkus is so smoking hot.
Great move between Sony/NBC. There is no stronger brand in television than Oprah. Moskow and Sony did an amazing job of stepping in to this business. Burkus is the new Martha. If anything it will give new lusture the the NBC station$. Bonnie was always soft.
Should I throw up now or later?
I am a latecomer to the Nate show. I love it. Have heard that
his ratings are not superb. Please give him some advertising and it will be a real winner.
Thanks.
