After a marathon negotiation session that ended this morning, IFC acquired screen rights to The Killer Inside Me, the Michael Winterbottom-directed adaptation of Jim Thompson’s best known work, the 1952 pulp fiction novel. Wild Bunch’s Carole Baraton and WME Global head Graham Taylor closed a deal worth between $1 million and $2 million for U.S. rights only and a late summer/early fall release. WME had its 3rd big deal in 3 days, after Wednesday’s sale of Hesher, Thursday’s deal for Blue Valentine, andthis morning’s The Killer Inside Me deal.
The pic was scripted by John Curran, and produced by Chris Hanley, Bradford L. Schei and Andrew Eaton. It stars Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. The Killer Inside Me was one of the most polarizing films of the festival, which is just how the noir novel was written. Buyers who caught its first screening were buzzing about how Winterbottom was confronted by angry women upset by a scene in which Affleck’s psychotic deputy sheriff character Lou Ford brutally pummels the face of a prostitute played by Alba. (Insiders tell me those reports thaat Alba walked out of the screening are bullshit. She had a pror commitment.) However, by being provocative and controversial, the pic also was able to distinguish itself in the crowded indie film marketplace. Buyers and reviewers I spoke with hailed the performances by Affleck — one of the most underrated young leading men working today — as well as Alba and Hudson.
Meanwhile, CAA is putting the finishing touches on a complex deal for Splice that includes a big P&A commitment from an independent financier, with Sony Worldwide Acquisitions at the center, and distributors Apparition or Newmarket likely to release it.

Glad it was purchased, but hope they do a little editing to make the film accessible to more people. If you haven’t read the book, you must do so before seeing the film. You will “get” Casey Affleck’s performance so much more if you do.
Also, calling a film about a psychopathic serial killer “misogynist” is dumb and lazy. Serial killers kill women, no? Saying that is a gross, ridiculous understatement along the lines of simply calling Hitler antisemitic. Let’s not misuse words, people.
Are we not supposed to have films about women being killed? This is life, and by closing their eyes to what really happens to female murder victims is childish. Having said that, taking out 2 minutes of the 3 minute beating scene would be fine with me to get people in to the theater to see this adaptation of one of the best noir novels ever written.
In real life three out of four homicide victims are male.
But if you watched only CSI, Law and Order, horror movies, slasher flicks and artsy movies about serial killers like this one you would never guess. You would think that most murder victims are female, young, beautiful and clad in their underwear/night gown when they get brutally killed.
I completely agree with you. There is a sick component to the shows you listed, as well as the films that follow suit. I haven’t seen “The Killer Inside Me”, but from what I’ve heard, it sounds gratuitous. Of course there are times when a film has to depict violence against a woman for the story, but Peter Jackson had a great point in an interview about how he approached it in Lovely Bones. He didn’t want to create something that someone sick would get off on. Unfortunately, many directors never show restraint. It’s all about their art, or their ratings in the case of those TV shows, and they don’t care how it impacts anyone.
Sundance is the worst about this…Hounddog for example. Of course, they had to prove how “rebellious” they are this year. Picking dark and disturbing selections proves that I guess?
Victims of serial killers tend to be women, not men.
and the aud is mostly female, which speaks volumes dunnit
Go GT, go!
Always great to see a buddy’s movie make it!
It’ll be good to see Casey Affleck back in action.
Just a thought, but could the “angry woman” be a plant? That is, a deliberate attempt to make a noir period piece into something edgy and controversial?
If I were a producer of “Splice,” I’d fly in an “angry Irish Priest” for my next screening. “For shame! How could ye unleash this inter-species gene-splicin’ blasphemy upon us?”
oooooh, controversy!
another film that ‘pushes the (tired) envelope’ with titillating violence against women.
sounds like utter conformity to me.
This is pretty exciting – I liked the book a lot. I’m quite looking forward to the movie actually!
Not to mistaken for our film, “Murder Inside of Me” about a schizophrenic surfer finds himself slipping over the edge after he inherits a local Mexican cantina.
Quick question for those in the know. Looking at these numbers (1-2M for The Killer Inside Me, for instance)…are investors making their $$ back on these pics? I know the 1-2M is U.S. rights only…but anyone got any specifics on the deal that WME crafted? Does that include a guaranteed P & A commitment from IFC? Will the investors make their $$ back only if the movie does well at the box office? I’m sure The Killer Inside Me cost more to produce than the sell price to IFC, so can someone with more knowledge fill me in on how the money will get made on this pic (and who will make it?)
I’m a commercial director about to embark upon a super low-budget indie (i.e. less than 100K) and I still don’t understand the cash flow dynamics of these Sundance acquisitions.
Thanks in advance.
Does anyone know what’s happening with Company Men? Nikki predicted it selling for $10 million, but I’ve heard nothing since then.
I don’t care how good this novel is,this MOVIE is everything that is horrible and pretentious about independent movies wrapped into one crappy package. The only reason I’m glad it sold is so that Winterbottom and the film’s producers can see how awful the reviews will be, and experience the hundreds of people worldwide who venture out to see this film. Other sickos will wait for the DVD and get turned on by the kinky sex and Casey Affleck beating the life out of two women with his fist. WTF?!?

THE ANSWER IS NO. EVEN IF IT SOLD OUT ALL ITS INTERNATIONAL TERRITORIES, IT WOULD STILL BE IN THE HOLE LIKELY $3M (PROVIDED THE NUMBERS REPRESENTED ARE REAL), THEREBY KILLING NOBODY BUT THE FINANCIERS.
If the film is half as good as the book, I’ll be surprised.
i thought the movie was good….violent but a good in different flick
