I saw it the other day and really liked it. It’s a great character study with a really fun backdrop and a hell of a lead performance.
Glad to see it’s getting out there.
French distribution rights??? Thats news?
Seriously? Cinetic closes a BS French deal for probably 100k and this is news? Next time I close a DTV deal for one territory, I’ll make sure to report in…
I had the pleasure of viewing the premiere of Holy Rollers at Sundance.
Sam Gold, a 20 year old Hasidic man selling fabric at his father’s store, is in the midst of finding a wife, a marriage arranged by his family and Rabbi.
Initially he appears to be a character with whom most Americans would have difficulty identifying. And that is before his second career as an international drug smuggler begins. But by the time the film ends, audience members have likely empathized with this character, brilliantly played by Jesse Eisenberg, and members of his family, as he struggles with decisions that face us all.
Despite being set in a New York Hasidic community in the midst of the Ecstasy trade, the film could have broad appeal, as every person can sympathize with the choices young Sam has to make between tradition and trend, faith and temptation, and delayed versus instant gratification.
I believe people from all walks of life will be entertained and edified by this film. As a psychologist I felt the story offered numerous insights and depictions of new and old theories. For those interested in newer psychological theories (e.g., Acceptance & Commitment Therapy; ACT), the main character engages in committed action towards his goals instead of clarified values and, in doing so, produces both intrapersonal psychopathology and systemic interpersonal dysfunction, before finding his way. This is a lesson from which we all can learn.
