UPDATES Who's 'Conan The Barbarian'? Two Candidates Considered
EXCLUSIVE: Today's the day for all things Conan to be resolved. First, there was Conan the late night host getting a whopping check to leave. Now, Conan the Barbarian has been crowned. I hear that Millennium Films, Lionsgate, and rights holder Paradox Entertainment have approved Jason Momoa to star in Conan, the rebirth of the Robert E. Howard-created series. The brawny star of Stargate Atlantis who also stars in HBO's Game of Thrones, Momoa got the nod over Kellan Lutz, the Twilight guy. I told you that the search for Conan had come down to the duo. Sources said that director Marcus Nispel was sold on Momoa, and won over the filmmakers by shooting a few trial scenes that allowed Momoa to wield a sword and behave very Schwarzenegger-like. This keeps the film on course for a March 15 production start in Bulgaria, and it closes a long ordeal in bringing the saga back to the screen. Paradox originally set up the film with Warner Bros in 2002, and then moved it over to Millenium in 2007.

We hear so often about remakes, reboots, and the like that I can’t even keep them all straight any longer. I think we may be reaching a saturation point of unoriginal studio programing. Now we here there will be a new Conan the Barbarian, but does anybody really care? A little originality feels like it could go a long way right now. Just look at Avatar for an example.
Avatar? Are you saying that Avatar’s the originality that the film industry needs to be striving for? Let me ask you something, Have you ever seen a movie called Fern Gully? It’s an animated children’s movie that came out a LONG time ago. The idea, plot, dialogue are all surprisingly similar. You should check it out.
However, i do agree with you that it’s getting tiring all these remixes, sequels being filmed before the first one is even in theater (the newest one i can think of is the Percy Jackson one), and reboots. Oh,and even though it might seem like I’m dissing on Avatar I really enjoyed the film and am looking forward to the direction film will take because of it. 
Don’t forget that AVATAR also lifts from DANCES WITH WOLVES to E R Burroughs’ “John Carter Of Mars” novels (currently being developed over at Pixar) and damn near everything inbetween. AVATAR is a Mulligan stew.
Come on, have you heard of Ferngully, you are just saying what others have already said, when speaking of originality make sure you say something that is original as well.

Not even Avatar is an original concept and relies on the special effects. The problem is – even if some nobody somewhere in the world comes up with an original concept, nobody in Hollywood will listen to him or her unless ‘referred’. It happens, it is happening now…
I do agree with you about needing more original stories. The market is increadibly saturated with remakes. However I do enjoy sone reboots. I like to see different styles and takes on already a great story. Sometimes that makes compelling cinema. I still would have loved to see Tim Burtons version of Superman. Imagine how different that would have been. Oh and besides Avatar being a retelling of Fern Gully, I also found it to be amazingly similar to Dances with Wolves as well.
Not all of us enjoy Tim Burton movies or find his aesthetic appealing. Appalling, yes.
I personally think his Batman movies were horrific and did as much to damage the brand as the campy 60s TV series did.
Even though they promoted the character into the stratosphere, they do so at the cost of what made the character and his mythology interesting and resonant.
Tim Burton’s bipolar/goth/Addams Family/alpha Emo aesthetic is not sexy to everyone and his directorial vision is clearly fueled by his mental disorder.

Howard and conan can tangle with a friggin ape and win, how can these candy ass hollywood boys live up to that?
Conan in the actual REH stories was not just a hulking roid barbarian, but also an agile and youthful thief who could jump and scale walls with ease. Arnie might be big, but he lacks the authenticity of the limberness to be an effective thief. Mamoa is actually quite a large guy, in Atlantis he was physically imposing enough to play Conan who incidentally was not big, he was in fact in the stories was often shorter than other hulking warriors, he merely possessed the force of will to overcome his adversaries.
I never thought Howards Conan had been given justice in the movies. I always envisioned a young Jack Palance with a braveheart like epic movie. Arnold was cheesy! i just checked out this new guy on you tube..it might work, holding out hope by crom!
I agree with Rico. Arnold was cheesy; DeLaurantis screwed up the film and should have paid more attention to oliver Stone’s concepts. Message to film makers: Read the freaking books! Tell the story as it was written by REH; Stay true to the look of the characters. Do this and fans will clamor for sequels, buy books and DVD’s. All this means money in the bank for producers and happy fans. I’m 60 years old and been a Conanphile since I was 7; nuff said.
Avatar is a rip on Dances With Wolves, The Mission, Pathfinder, Pocahantas and of course the Smurfs. The technology and cinematography are great but the story and dialogue border on the silly. The biggest rip comes from the book “The World of Noon” by Soviet fantasy writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. The Strugastky brothers wrote a sick human who uses his mind to meld with blue creatures called the Nave who live on a planet called Pandora; sound famliar?

Actually, if the plans hold true movie goers will finally see ROBERT E. HOWARD’S CONAN — those two films from the 1980’s ain’t it! Howard wrote 21 stories of the Cimmerian adventurer between 1933 and his death in 1936 and single-handedly created the genre we know as sword and sorcery. Modern technology is finally at a point where Conan and his epic world — like LOTR — can finally be done. Howard’s Conan: “I don’t go looking for devils but I won’t step out of my path to let one go by.”
Just to let you know what made Conan Really shine was in the 60’s when conan became hugely popular due to Frank Frazetta paintings on the Lancer and Ace paperbacks. Robert E. Howard would discribe Conan as mighty. He could of been a mighty twig, but readers were excited to pick up a book with frazetta images on them. Hollywood could say that they want to stay true to his writing But I dont think they know. Frazetta got it and it was a home run. Lets remember why we picked up the book in the first place. Momoa is a bad choice. Tarzan fits his body type better. They better change the poster art and put a thin arm in its place holding the heavey two handed battle blade.
I think the remake couled be good if they did it right, The guy that will have the roll as conan, actor JASON MOMOA needs to really beef up for the roll and get rid of the dreadlocks, conan never had dreadlocks, I thought the story wouled be have ARNOLD come back for a small part as conan to where he has his kindom allready and then JASON MOMOA would play his son and his name wouled also be conan than go from there. It will be hard for JASON MOMOA to take over ARNOLDS role as conan, but I think if puts the time in to it and works hard he could do it. We will have to what and see.

Jason Momoa looks awesome and he’ll make a hell of a Conan. He has the look — he exudes that “barbarian” quality that so excited Robert E. Howard. It’s a brave and exciting selection. Let’s hope Marcus Nispel, Jason Momoa, Millennium Films, Lionsgate and Paradox do Howard’s iconic creation justice.

The name you’re looking for is Roland Kickinger. He is pretty much a clone of Arnold back in his Mr. Universe days. Why they didn’t use him instead of a CG Arnold in the last Terminator movie is one of the things (just one mind you) that went wrong on that production.
I’m a big fan of Momoa. He’s a great guy and nice to work with. But he’s completely wrong for this. Prove me wrong Jason. I’ll support the film either way, but I’m having visions of King Kull here.

Arnold looked nothing like Conan to begin with. They shouldn’t have to make casting decisions based on whether the person looks like Arnold or not, but rather on whether it looks like CONAN or not. Arnold didn’t make Conan, Robert E. Howard did.
I Agree I love Arnold but he is not even close to what conan was supposed to be. He was ruthless and head and shoulders above the tallest pictish warriors of the time. I am not even sure there is someone on earth who could play conan.

The Governator was never the best pick for Conan – wasn’t dark enough, or brooding enough. He was no older than Moma is now, and – the worst part – could NEVER act. The ONLY thing he was good in was Terminator, and in some ways it was good DESPITE him being in it.

As for him playing Conan, I’m really pleased about this in part because according to this article, Millennium Films is saying that their version will “be more faithful to Howard’s original creation than were the Schwarzenegger films.” This is very good news to those of us who really, really dislike the Schwarzenegger versions. As commenter Robhiengler says, those were a poor parody of Howard’s Conon — here’s hoping Millennium and Jason Momoa can give us the real thing.

He has the tan that Conan got over his long years of wandering but thats about it for actually resembling the character. Even if they give him the square cut black mane (which they probably won’t)or lenses to get the glacial blue eyes (again probably won’t)he is far to scrawny to be considered the strongest man in the Hyborian Age and he is way to pretty. Oh well its not like they are making this for the actual Conan fans.

Momoa is a great guy, as anyone can tell you, from working on “Stargate Atlantis” in Vancouver. Born in the same year as Heath Ledger (1979) he could always be counted on to drive around town and onto set in a big pink car…have no idea what he looks like now after reconstructive surgery following his bar fracas, but Frazetta’s illustrations of Conan, show a mass of scars, so there ya’ go…

was having a great friday until i came across this article…I grew up watching Conan, had a iguana named Conan, cried when my parents wouldn’t name my brother Conan. This choice of character makes me sick and embarrassed to be a Conan fan…could this dude punch out a camel…I don’t think so

For the record, Roland Kickinger DID play the Terminator in T4- they CG’d him to look more like Arnold, but that’s his name in the credits as “T-800″.And the John Milius-directed CONAN THE BARBARIAN is, in many ways VERY faithful to Howard (big chunks of dialogue are lifted, and it incorporates material from the Kull stories)- but it would be nice to see a Conan that was CELTIC, as his creator made him!

If you’re talking about the dreads, they went about two years ago because they were giving him neck problems. If you’re talking about his current medium-length ‘do, I’m sure he’d be willing to let the production cut it however they see fit.
And too “skinny”? Really? I mean, he’s not a bodybuilder, but dude has decent muscles. He’s bulked up a bit since his Baywatch days. Admittedly, I’m not terribly familar with the source material, but I find Momoa’s physique just as believable as a barbaric warrior as Shwarzenegger’s, because his agility makes up for the lack of steroids.
this is perfect casting. the only thing Momoa is missing is the muscle mass, and he’s got the time to put that on with some professional help. he’ll eat some horse meat and lift some weights and all the haters will be pleasantly surprised when they see how awesome he’ll be as Conan.
now, if we can only get Jon Hamm to be Captain America…

The guy’s 6′4″, he’s athletic, he’s fast, he’s up for any stunt the director wants to throw at him…The only thing I’ve seen him in was Atlantis, and that seems like a pretty good indication he’ll look perfectly fine. He could actually act, too -whenever the writers there gave him something to do. And when they didn’t, he at least gave great reaction to what everyone else was doing. [Wonders what people are worried about...]

Are you people new to Hollywood or are you just stupid? Jason’s a big guy at 6′4, Kellan barely breaks 6 feet. Besides Jason’s a native Hawaiian, give him six meals a day plus an intense workout routine IN ADDITION to the steroids he’ll be given and in 5 months this guys going to be massive.
It’s obvious Kellan can’t act, and it’s not like the film would do any better with him in it because unless it’s a Twilight movie, no one gives a damn. I say good choice, but still an unneeded remake that I sure as hell won’t pay to see.

Momoa is EXACTLY who I was hoping they’d cast. First he can act and second, he’s 6′4″ and muscular, not body-builder bulky. Anyone who’s read ANY of the Robert E. Howard stories of Conan (particularly his early adventures) would know that the favourite son of Cimmeria is agile and quick as well as strong and fierce.
Watch some of the YouTube clips of Momoa in knife and fist fights. He sells it. The man ain’t “scrawny” by any stretch of the imagination.
As much as I liked the Ah-nuld movie (the second one was terrible!), the Governator NEVER convinced me that he was Conan. He’s simply too big and bulky to be believable in a sword fight.

I know nothing of REH’s original version being celtic but that is at odds with both Arnold and not even close with Mamoa. This is another example of Hollywood trying to promote racial harmony. No problem with that idea but they are just getting carried away with this stuff. I wonder how they could possibly even match the storyline with the guy’s noneuropean descent. I applaud a remake but do it right. By the way it’s kind of hard to imagine anyone else but Arnold as Conan despite the Celtic origin of the original character versus Arnold being germanic. According to the Wikipedia bio on him, Jason Mamoa has some Irish ancestry on his mother’s side. So there’s Celtic for ya! No one needs a remake of Arnold – I’d like to see a fresh face and a fresh take on the story.

Hollywood would never use an actual Brit to play a Scot, nevermind an actual Scot. I liked Momoa as Ronan in SGA, but he’s not my idea of what Conan would look like. There is no one alive today who could play Conan the way he was depicted in the REH novels. So we have to make do with Momoa or someone like him. I wonder if a young Sean Connery would have done the role justice…..

There are probably ample people alive today who would do the role justice. The problem is none of them are high profile actors or well known for anything. Dwaye Johnson “The Rock” made a good transition into acting as did Arnold. Maybe an NFL player would be up to the task. They found plenty of interesting characters for the barbarians in the forests of Germany in the opening battle scene of Gladiator albeit that was only one scene. I haven’t read the REH novels but I assume Conan starts out fairly young so Gerard Butler is probably out.
I am a big fan of Atlantis and I do think that Momoa is cool but let’s be real here, like everyone is saying and has always said, you can’t cast a Conan and not have a bodybuilder. Not just any bodybuilder, but a bodybuilder none the less. As I said before I am a big fan of Momoa but even I’m not stupid enough not to know that it’s ‘Conan’, not ‘Bombaata’.

I would suggest Sesame Street, but that seems to be mostly Spanish now, and I don’t recall it having any Spanish when I was a child. Then again, maybe Spanish is something that should be taught at an early age, at least in the US, since the government tolerates it and retailers support it.

I have been a true Conan fan all my life,I have all the novels and a footlocker filled with all the comics. I think Momoa is a poor choice, though the best of the three finalists since I think Lutz and Padalecki would have been downright abominable. Why is it so damn hard for hollywood to get these things right ?! Quit casting “prettyboys” , especially for a movie that will have about a 70% male audience, true fans like myself want someone that actually looks like the Conan of the novels and even guys unfamiliar with the novels would rather see a “man’s man” than some pretty faced little bitch. If you want to see what Conan is supposed to look like Google image search “Tor Conan novels”, Momoa as previously stated by others, is waaay too scrawny for the role for one , without even getting into how obviously wrong his ethnic heritage is for the role. Conan is supposed to be huge, muscular, agile, intelligent, clever and cunning, with blue eyes, black hair and a weathered worldly appearance.
I thought Schwarzenager also sucked in the role, he played Conan as a big dumb oaf, nothing like he is in the novels. For once I was hoping Hollywood would finally get one of my favorite characters of all time right, but nooo, it appears it is not to be.

While the movie was great in it’s own right, Arnold is nothing like my vision of Conan. Let’s just hope that Momoa is playing only a section of Conan’s youth, and that another, more steely-thewed battle-horse is involved for the main role. Who knows, maybe JM will surprise us all!

I am afraid that this movie is going to fall way short of what it could have been. I am 41 years old and the first book that I read when I was six was conan. The comment that each of us draws a different image of what conan looks like is true, but only to a certain point. Robert E Howard described conan and Frazetta got it absolutely right. The majority of the artwork with conan in it is pretty similar to each other. They depict a tall, muscular, scarred man with square cut black hair. The books, which I loved, describe him as VERY intelligent, capable of picking up new languages quickly and extremely powerful and charismatic. We all picture him a little differently but not this different.
I like jason momoa. I think he’s an excellent actor, but whether he can portray conan right is yet to be seen. Personally I think no. I also think that hollywood has become a backstabbing, absolutely no loyalty to its fans, joke. Point in case, the new star trek. WTF. What a betrayal of fan loyalty so they could appeal to teenagers. They made captain kirk a stupid PUNK that didn’t even know how to operate a tricorder let alone run a starship. William Shatner portrayed kirk as an intelligent, very cunning, confident man who cheated death because he was smart and clever. He was not some stupid punk which is what seems to appeal to teenagers today.
I am going to watch this movie because, hey, it’s conan and I am a major fan. But, I hope it’s not going to be another rape of a classic just so they can appeal to teenagers. Like I said, I was a big fan of Stargate Atlantis and Ronin was my favorite character. Since he is playing the role, I only hope he does it justice and hollywood doesn’t drop the ball, AGAIN.
first of all most people here are lost! i have virtually all Conan comics,and the two Arnold movies,including novels and R.E.H. books.Conan was in excess of 6′2″ and over 200lbs when he was in his teens heavily muscled,deep blue eyes deep chest extremely powerful and agile he was considered extremely tall almost a giant as R.E.H always stated.Arnold was the closest to him as stated by marvel during there search and even changed the character to suet his features. Jason’s current build does not come even close to Conan unless he is cast in his late teens very early twenties but he would have to add size for that. Any thing less and this will be a flop as King Kull was, it was a colossal insult and disappointment as were the two Arnold movies. The technology was not there to make a Conan movie in the 1980’s it is now, But the finical specimen is wrong unless he gains a lot of size not necessarily weight.Arnold would a great King Conan though.
I for one am disappointed so far in the choice unless Jason can gain a lot of size then we will see his features how ever are wrong based on everything R.E.H. wrote anyone claiming different never actually read R.E.H writings!

If this can happenned in Europe in Hyborian Age, it can happen any place on Earth. The charactor Conan not about race, it is about person, who becomes hero! I think it is okay for Africans, Asians, Latinos, and Arabs to play as Conan in Conan the Barbarian!
