We told you yesterday that Sean Bailey’s name was making the rounds of Hollywood to replace ousted Oren Aviv as Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production president. Now we can tell you it’s official. Bailey already has been fully engaged on the studio lot, producing the Joe Kosinski-directed Tron Legacy. That has been his biggest project since he left Live Planet, the production partnership with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris Moore. UPDATE: Disney has sent out the news release, noting that additional changes will “reinforce the studio’s new strategic direction” under chairman Rich Ross:
BURBANK, Calif., January 14, 2010 — Rich Ross, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios (TWDS), announced today that Sean Bailey has been named President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production as the segment continues to restructure its operation. In his new role, he will oversee all aspects of live-action development, film production and physical production for Walt Disney Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. Additional changes to international theatrical distribution, multicultural initiatives, publicity, communications and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment were made as part of the business’ new strategic direction.
“Building upon a strong foundation with the company, Sean brings great creative instincts and considerable filmmaking experience to his new role at The Walt Disney Studios. His close relationships throughout the creative community and industry at large make him an ideal leader to set the direction of TWDS’ future film slates,” said Ross. “Sean’s talent, energy, and commitment to delivering quality content will help us achieve our goals of producing and distributing Disney-branded movies that entertain audiences worldwide.”
“I am honored and thrilled to join a company with the history and tradition of The Walt Disney Studios,” said Bailey. “Working with the strong team that has been assembled under Rich’s leadership, I look forward to working with the Studios’ impressive array of talented filmmakers to create entertaining, inspiring films that uphold the legacy and quality of classic Disney movies and capture the imagination of our global audiences.”
Bailey’s feature film producing credits include Matchstick Men, Gone Baby Gone and the upcoming Disney film, Tron Legacy. He is the founder and president of the production company, Idealogy, Inc. He also co-founded the integrated media firm, LivePlanet, with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Chris Moore and was the executive producer of several high profile television programs including LivePlanet’s three-time Emmy-nominated Project Greenlight. Sean wrote the screenplay Liberty for The Walt Disney Company and co-wrote the screenplay Solace.
Sean has created, packaged and developed film, television and new media concepts for Walt Disney Pictures, Miramax, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, DreamWorks, New Line Cinema, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., and all of the major television networks.
To further streamline the distribution of future TWDS’ theatrical content, Ross also announced today that 23-year Disney veteran Chuck Viane, President, Distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, will take on all aspects of international sales and distribution across 70 countries, in addition to his on-going responsibilities overseeing domestic sales and distribution operations. Viane will report directly to Bob Chapek, President of Distribution for The Walt Disney Studios.
Other executives will take on new assignments as part of the Studios’ restructuring. Christine Cadena, currently Senior Vice President, Marketing, Synergy and Franchise Development, will become Senior Vice President, Multicultural Initiatives, leading all diversity and multicultural efforts. Michelle Sewell has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Global Publicity, overseeing the domestic and international publicity departments, and is responsible for formulating and executing worldwide publicity campaigns for all live-action and animated motion pictures. She will report to the head of marketing.
The Studios’ communications team will also transition as John Nicoletti becomes Vice President, Global Communications and Paul Roeder moves to Director, Global Communications. Heidi Trotta, Senior Vice President of Studio Communications, will stay on as a consultant for a transitional period.
Cadena, Nicoletti and Trotta will report directly to Ross.
“I’m fortunate that I have been able to access the deep talent pool within the Studio and throughout The Walt Disney Company,” said Ross.
In addition to the executive level changes, the Studio will also continue its reorganization of the workforce at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.
“Our industry is evolving rapidly and in order to remain at its forefront, we are adapting our organization to be more agile, creative and responsive,” said Ross.

huh? nice guy middling producer running a studio this is a head scracther??
Excuse me, but WHAT ELSE HAS SEAN BAILY DONE? I mean Tron Legacy is his biggest project? Notice how the announcement says he’s been involved in all sorts of development. LIKE WHAT? WHAT MOVIES HAS HE MADE? Has anything gone forward? This seems like a bonehead choice in a sea of MUCH BETTER CHOICES.
Sigh.
Sean is a great guy. He deserves this. He’s smart, kind, creative and actually listens. Disney made an excellent choice here. This bodes well for their future projects as Sean is notorious for shooting for the back corner of the end zone. He’ll take risks. Cookie cutter he is not.
Sean is an incredible talent and a great human being. He’s just what the doctor ordered. Bold and spot on choice by Ross.
I don’t think Rich Ross could have made a better choice. Sean is universally loved and respected internally at Disney, has great filmmaker relationships, and is a genuinely thoughtful and creative guy. Disney’s getting the best of both worlds with Sean: he’s technically “fresh blood” from outside Disney’s executive ranks, but he also knows Disney very well. Wish him all the best.
Seriously, I just IMDB’ed Mr. Baily. And other than GONE BABY GONE he’s done terrible projects. The Emperer’s Club was a diseaster, MATCHSTICK MEN, unwatchable. And a lot of television that didn’t get beyond a season, most a few epidsodes.
There’s a catch here. I don’t get it. Why Sean Bailey?
Viva Armenia!
Has someone with less experience ever been hired at this powerful a position?
Yes, Rich Ross!
Sean Bailey is a class act. Worked with him on Gone, Baby, Gone and he was sharp, focused and the consummate professional. He’s an incredibly well-connected, hard-working and amiable guy, and this is a smart move for Ross.
This is just the beginning. I’m hearing that Disney will have a round of layoffs today. Nikki, any updates??
Sean Bailey??? Are you kidding me? Barely getting by as a producer and now he gets to run a studio. What a joke.
Sean Bailey is one of the smartest and nicest guys I’ve worked with in this town. Kudos to him.
Agreed! Sean Bailey is a great guy, so nice, and quite the writer. Glad to see him moving up!
What happens to everyone else? I can’t imagine all the folks passed over are gonna stay.
I knew Sean when I went to Pasadena Poly where he was part of the “Poly-wood” class including Ted Griffin, Ghen Maynard of CBS, Mike White and Alec Berg. He was a good guy then and from what I’ve seen of his career should be a great studio prez. Good luck!
Sean’s one of the nicest and smartest people I’ve ever met in the bizness, and with the best taste. He’s written, produced and (on at least one occasion) directed, as well as dealing with some of the most insane people in the industry (Bruce Willis, Shekhar Khapur). On the pro side this suggests that Disney may finally be shaking itself free of the marketing department. On the con side, I worry that Sean is just too intelligent for this job. In any case I wish him the absolute best of luck… it’s rare that you hear of one of these kinds of hires and think, wow, THAT’S good news.
Sean is a good guy, a smart guy and respectful guy. Talk about a fresh breath of air in the exec ranks.
Sean Bailey??? Nice guy – yes…but are you friggin kidding me?? Studio Head?? Really?? I mean – REALLY?? What the hell is going on in this town? Jeff Zucker still has a job…and now Bailey is a studio head. What’s next?? I’m scared…hold me…
Sean is a perfect fit for Disney. Smart, talented, and one of the most decent human beings you’ll meet. The folks at Disney will soon learn that they are lucky to have him.
Sean’s a great guy, no doubt. But a guy who’s never worked at a studio is suddenly the president of one? It’s obvious how unhappy now Iger was with the previous regime. Oren was hated by the creative community — and this is obviously their gamble to get real directing talent on their tentpoles (like Marvel, Sony, WB, etc.). The question is: what’s next? They keep pointing to the Disney Channel as a model but that is incredibly niche compared to the film biz…curious to see exactly what Bailey’s first slate is…
Couldn’t happen to a better guy. He will be a breath of fresh air and a welcome change from the usual f-heads who run studios.
Its Brad Grey-Gail Berman part 2…
I wonder what Disney is going to do to Marvel Comics come to think of it. Given people like Bendis and Millar already have tranformed into the never ending crossover that never goes anywhere or has a point, but I wonder what Disney is going to do with the EIC and such. I think it hold badly, it’s sort of been going in the direction of ‘we don’t care how bad our ideas are we’re going to do them anyway’ and the it would be ‘those things are gone SPider-man isn’t satanic and there’s no explanation as to why he’s not’.
Bye, Marvel.
At last, the good guy wins! Sean is one of the most decent, honest, talented, creative and hard working people in Hollywood. To have him on your team is a bonus, to have him as a leader is genius. He is so understated without that obnoxious sleazy ego. Working with him is an honor. For those of you who think he is an unknown like Streisand’s hairdresser, Jon Peters who went on to head a studio, Sean is the real thing. He READS, he Writes and won’t insist on giant black mechanical spiders in his movie.
He is a talent who does not demand the spotlight. (Yes, Virginia, there is such a person in Hollywood!) Great listener, writer and producer. Congratulations to us who will benefit from this selection!
Very excited by this hire…He’s always been a really good guy, very smart and knows when something is working not to mess it up…maybe because he’s actually A WRITER himself. What a concept! Wishing him the best and hoping other studios look for similar execs.
