Twilight Saga franchise star Robert Pattinson has finally found a studio film to sink his teeth into. He’s in talks to star in Water for Elephants, the Richard LaGravanese-scripted adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel that Fox 2000 is putting together with Francis Lawrence directing. Reese Witherspoon is already attached, and the studio is courting Sean Penn to return from a big screen sabbatical by playing the other lead in the Depression-era romantic triangle. The novel was a runaway bestseller, and in keeping with the eclectic output of Fox 2000′s Elizabeth Gabler. Gil Netter, Erwin Stoff and Andrew Tennenbaum are producing.
Pattinson is in talks to play Jacob, a 21 year old who joins a second-rate traveling circus after he’s traumatized by the car crash death of both parents. He left just before he was to take his veterinary medicine exams at an Ivy League school, and finds his place in the circus by caring for the menagerie of mangy animals. He falls in love with Marlena, the show’s star performer (Witherspoon), and that’s courting danger since she’s married to the paranoid schizophrenic animal trainer who runs the show. That is the role that Penn is circling. Deals still have to be made, and putting three pricey stars in a period adult drama is a challenging proposition.
Pattinson, who between Twilight segments starred for Summit in Remember Me, has been cautious about choosing his next job, but the prospect of starring in another well-known literary adaptation, potentially alongside two Oscar winners, seems a strong move. The hope is to get the picture into production around June, before he returns for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
Penn, who took a sabbatical for personal reasons, has also resurfaced as a potential Larry Fine in The Three Stooges. While that Farrelly Brothers-directed comedy has Fox strategically positioned as at least co-financier, the picture resides at MGM. It won’t be go into production until ownership of that studio is resolved.
Witherspoon is also in discussions for the 20th Century Fox comedy This Means War. There is no director on that film, but Bradley Cooper is also circling the comedy which Fox production chief Emma Watts has revived after the studio acquired it over 10 years ago as a vehicle for Martin Lawrence. Reese would play a woman who separately meets two men, who happen to be best friends. When they discover they’re pining for the same woman, the title kicks in. Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook is lead producer on the film.

i hope it’s true))) it sounds cool…Rob and Reese are the WIN!!!!
I am thrilled to bits about this. The script was a fantastic read and all 3 actors are perfect for the roles.
I think that plant was superb and you’ll make a wonderful publicist some day. Jerkoff.
Mira Nair should direct.
Cant wait to see this. The short scene of Pattinson and Witherspoon in Vanity Fair was the best bit in it and it got cut. Madness. lookign forward to seeing them reunited on screen. Penn as August would be a good fit.
Francis Lawrence is a hack director. All style over substance. He’ll ruin this movie.
Yyeeessss!!! This will be amazing if it turns out to be true!!!!
Rob will absolutely wilt next to Sean Penn. Give the role of Jacob to a good young actor please.
I’m a older Robert Fan(45) and find Rob to be a great actor,,,I’ve watched all the movies he has done and he’s been amazing in each one. He’s young but very very talented…Sean Penn is also a great actor, but let us not forget where he started at, Jeff Spicoli….not really Oscar material….it tooks years for him to become good at his craft.
sabbatical = white powder
Sean Penn desperately needs to take Pattinson under his wing. This could be a great beginning as Pattinson steers out of the Twilight Saga.
I am very excited about this prospect for Rpatzz. This is going to be a great film, with a great cast. I think he will be the next Jdepp, Bpitt, or Ldecap
Reese can’t do drama so she’s going back to her slapstick roots to make some green. Nice work 360. Remember what happened when Meg Ryan tried to go serious? Career ender. Just don’t put ass fat in your lips, Reesie.
to Ryan: “Reese can’t do drama” See Walk the Line/Oscar winning drama role
“going back to her slapstick roots” What makes you think This Means War is ‘slapstick’? It sounds like a great premise to me.
As for your pot shots at Meg Ryan, granted she made a couple of duds outside her comfort zone of rom-com, but do you have to be so nasty? …and dissing one of the most successful Management companies in the business to boot..what is your problem?
i hope this will be happen. it’s great book and i am one of those pattinson big fans. i hope he can do it.
hahaha from Edward to Jacob!!!!
LOL!
The script is wonderful and a very good role for Pattinson. Good for him. Its a good match for all three actors. Looking forward to seeign this.
Its an entertaining book and I read the script in one sitting. Its the kind of story that families will love. There’s even an adorable elephant that Pattinson’c character would look after. Plenty of opportunities for a good cry. I’m thrilled to see what the director does with it.
Now all they need is Peter Dinklage for the role of Walter. Perfect casting so far. If Pattinson wont be playing the 93 year old version of Jaco (the older version appears at thhe start and end of the script) then I suggest Terence Stamp for the role. Pattinson has always reminded me of Stamp. Infact I;d love to see Pattinson play Stamp’s role in a remake of The Collector (the book by John Fowles) which Wyler directed in the 60′s.
By the way what does this mean for Unbound Captives?. Both Pattinson and Jackman now have roles throughout the year which must push back Unbound Captives. I really hope it comes together at some point with Pattinson/Jackman and Weitsz and not other actors.
The little midget Reese is great at manipulating her image and her management. Remember when she fired Suzan Bymel and would only talk to O’Neill? She’s obviously hurting for cash and would probably do a pole dance for dollar bills right now. Nasty is as nasty does. As far as 360 goes, they may have the clients, but I would love to listen in on some of those 3AM cell phone calls. And Meg is so over… didn’t she sign with them post trout pout and pre implosion? Nice work, guys. Off the radar.
I think that Hathaway did the same thing.. stayed with 360 but ditched Bymel for O’Neill. Que pasa?
Such a great book and wonderful opportunity for Rob! I think that he would be perfect for the role of Jacob. I have seen most of his work before Twilight. I do love him as Edward, but can’t wait to see him evolve past the Twilight saga. He is a versatile actor, and deserves the chance to do this.
After reading the book, if this is going to be the cast, I can picture them all in the roles. A great step for Pattinson, even though he worked with Witherspoon in VF. Only the dvd’s show his performance. I like that he is getting his chance to show what he can do.
Have read a (draft) of the script (it’s wonderful) and am in the midst of reading the book, which so far is brilliant. Oscar winning actors (Reese and Sean) have the potential to make this period film huge. However, I am most excited about Robert Pattinson taking the role of Jacob. He’s so under-rated/under-valued… He’s got the acting chops to pull this off, he’s not just ‘Edward Cullen’. I believe that the surface of Rob’s acting talents has only been scratched… I predict that he will come into his own, he will shock and amaze us with his talent given the chance and good casting.
GRRRRR…. Reese better stay away from my man! Can’t wait to c it! The book rockz!!!
im as old as if not one year younger than rob,(23,turning 24 march13th) and i find him an exeptionally great actor as well as person. see the thing with most americans(im british) is that they are materialistic, they only look at clothes, skin colour, accent, jewelry, and money, where as mainly us british, we basically all care about the person, if they are nice, their likes, dislikes, what they have done(though we tend to look past the things they have done) stuff like that and i have a feeling if some one gave rob the chance to let him know them thatthey would be friends.
