BREAKING NEWS! 3RD UPDATE: Tobey Maguire just released this statement to me: “I am so proud of what we accomplished with the Spider-Man franchise over the last decade. Beyond the films themselves I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story.”
2ND UPDATE: Mike Fleming and Nikki Finke have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a Summer 2012 reboot from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today. An official Sony Pictures news release about it is expected out now (see below).
Immediately, the news brought celebration and consternation equally to webslinger fanboys who say the reboot plot puts Peter Parker back in high school. There's also much unconfirmed speculation that this new franchise will be in 3D. And the fans also recall that, in 1991, James Cameron wrote a treatment for Spider-Man and now they're wondering if he might helm the reboot. (Sony ended up acquiring his treatment in a legal settlement.)
Here's what went down: My sources tell me that Raimi told Sony Pictures: "I can't make your date. I can't go forward creatively." And, so, once he said "That's it", Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures' Matt Tolmach decided they didn't want to replace him and instead chose to reboot the franchise. Insiders also tell me that Tobey Maguire heard the news in a phone call with Amy today. I'm told Tobey wasn't upset. "He's made 3 great Spider-Man movies. He's done really well. But he's the kind of guy who, if Sam wanted to go forward, would have been there for Sam and the studio. Absolutely."
Mike Fleming has heard that, from Spidey, Raimi could move to World Of Warcraft, or to The Given Day, that terrific novel by Dennis Lehane, author of Shutter Island and Mystic River. Both are worthy projects, but World Of Warcraft is a huge franchise.
Fortunately for the studio, Sony was not yet "pay or play" on some of the talent negotiations which were still only at the tail end. Raimi was insisting that John Malkovich play the villain, and the studio was looking to cast Anne Hathaway. "I'm not so sure we're going in that direction," an insider told me on January 5th. Sony had been hot for her until bigwigs realized she'd cost too much and they probably don't need "such a big star" for the pic, I was told. (See my previous, Anne Hathaway Wanted For 'Spider-Man 4'.)
As for those repeated rumors that Spider-Man 4 might shoot in 3D, I've learned it would have added at least 6 months to the production schedule and "no one on the pic has any idea how to do that," a source confided. You've got to figure 3D now is uppermost on Sony minds given the post-Avatar climate, and Summer 2012 is more than enough time to make the reboot with new technology. Back in April, Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton told Forbes magazine: "People are paying a premium to see movies in 3-D and that's a very big deal. It's never been done before that someone says you have to pay more to see Spider-Man than a romantic comedy."
The events that led to today's shocking decision to scrap Spider-Man 4 can be traced to mid-December when I saw a December 11th email alerting the pic's special effects crew that the fourquel would not be starting as planned "but Sam Raimi has story issues [that] need to be resolved before we are ready to shoot". At that point, it wasn't well known that the Spider-Man franchise director helming the 4th installment had huge problems with the script that has run through screenwriters Jamie Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, and Gary Ross. I was told Sam Raimi had been very vocal inside Sony that he "hated" it. I broke this story on January 5th, and reported that Raimi and Sony were anxiously waiting for still another version from screenwriter Alvin Sargent, who wrote Spidey 2 & 3 and is married to Spidey franchise producer Laura Ziskin. "It is unlikely that May 11, 2011, date will be made," a Sony insider told me that day. "It depends on how quickly the script can get in." However, agents told clients in the movie to already expect the film to be pushed back.
My sources said Sony still intends to release that summer, even if the new date is July 2011. But Spider-Man has always owned that coveted early May date. Even as far back as September 2008 when I reported my exclusive that Sony Locks Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire For 'Spider-Man 4'.
What a giant opportunity for other studios planning their 2011 schedules to grab this big opening. And they did. Paramount and Marvel Entertainment pushed up the release of Thor by two weeks to May 6, 2011. Thor was set to have opened May 20, 2011, a slot which Disney grabbed for Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides.
Spider-Man 4 was supposed to start filming in February, which Tobey Maguire echoed repeatedly in publicity appearances for Brothers. Then it pushed to March. Then late March/early April. And by January 5th there was no date at all, according to my Sony insiders who emailed me: "Some decisions have been made over the holiday about Spider-Man 4. We will be extending the production hiatus on the film. The studio is firmly committed to this franchise but, for us, the script must come first. We intend to notify members of the crew immediately. As you know, Alvin Sargent is currently working on the screenplay. When we have more news, we will keep you posted."
Pascal and Tolmach, who have shepherded the Spider-Man franchise from Day One, have been wrestling with this script problem for months. "I'm going to do everything I can to make May," she has repeatedly told Hollywood types involved with the movie. "But I'm not going to start a movie where the script isn't right yet. Not unless I want my career to be over."
Here is the Sony press release:
Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) -- Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.
The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.
“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.
“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”
"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."
The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.
Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
Tobey the elf was an awful Peter Parker anyway, and anyone who thinks otherwise should look at the comic book.
I couldn’t agree more – Peter Parker in the comics was tall and skinny, not a dwarf, so Tobey was badly miscast. Parker was also smart – and a smart alec – that females found attractive and charming so here again we have a serious casting problem – James Franco would have made a good Spiderman but was cast as Goblin. Maybe they’ll get it right this time.
You’ve got to be kidding? Get it right this time???? Not only were Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 really awesome and groundbreaking films, but they were adored by fans and critics alike — and made a bundle, too. (Albiet #3 had major tampering and was a mess — ) but unlike Batman which was rebooted after a disastrous movie by a one-time Batman actor — Spider-Man is still fresh. THe FX are top-notch — how much more AMAZING can they be? And NOW they’re going to have ANOTHER origin. In case you forgot, after all it’s been almost 6 years or so, “A teenager is bit by a spider and gets super powers!” –
You’re an idiot.
No, you’re an idiot.
Please decide which one of you is an idiot…
Couldn’t agree more, the first two “Spidey” movies were terrific, and while many of us Marvel Comic’s Fans had issues with the casting of the Mary Jane part, we still enjoyed seeing “Spider Man” on the big screen. “Sam Raimi”, on the Scripting collaboration with his brother, made the third movie too silly. While I’m not looking forward to a “Reboot”, it will be interesting to see what Hollywood Big Wig “Laura Ziskin” does with this 2012 production. Actually, it’s kinda like a funeral; mourning the passing of a friend who’s died too soon…
I agree, besides Dunst looks like a man in a dress, Tobey’s prettier than her.
first of all raimi did NOT want to do 3 the way it was done. he wanted to save venom for 4. but the execx decided they new what comic fans wanted(which they dont) and pushed for the crappy(and poorly cast) venom. im sorry but in the comics< brock/venom< were huge, not topher grace size. you people wanna say maguire was miscast…..you need to dive back into your comic collection
bender’s got it right. the exec’s pushed raimi to have venom in the 3rd and gave him too small a deadline to attempt to get it right. seems they did the same thing with 4 on the deadline and screwed the pooch. 4 easily could have redeemed 3 and its what fans wanted. there are already too many loose ends within the whole story arc that needed to see closure. this whole thing, and the entire comic movie industry, started because of the fans, and its only successful when the producers listen to the fans. this is unfortunately what happens when they don’t.
@ Bender, your right about Raimi wanting venom in four, but there is more than one form of Venom in different comic series. In one of tem, he is a large body builder. But in another comic series, he was small and pathetic and hated Parker, and that is why the symbiote was attracted to him. But, you’re right, Topher wasn’t the best pick
I have to agree here Spiderman needs to stay where its at this reboot will be a big mistake Sony just doesn’t wanna give up its cash cow.. I think Marvel should buy back the damn rights to Spidey and pick it up where it left off give Raimi alittle more time and let the genious do what he does best.Hell Spiderman 3 would have been amazing if Sony hadn’t gotten in his way with Venom.. Who in their right mind signs Topher Grace as the hulking stuper strong and dangerous symbiote? really?! He is a great actor jusy not his part.. I hope Marvel can get thr rights back and make this right cause Sony is messing with a great movie serious.
i now what u mean man spider man 3 would have been beter the way it was but soney had to get in the way and put venom in there and so they did but they killed him off when origenaly what was planned was that spidey get the black suit at the ending of slider man 3 then have the whole movie of spider man 4 abut him with it and venom
wrong
spider man and spider man 2 were decent for blockbusters then spidey 3 came out and it was a slap in the face. stick to the comics that made these characters famous maybe? hmmm that might be a good idea. nobody wants an emo spidey dancing to jazz music. start fresh no toby .
This is so Fucking stuipid Because you are taking out the best actors out of Spider Man movie,Why in the Fucking world are you making a New Spiderman movie and new actors to! and You are started the entire Fucking movie all over again it is like started Spiderman 1 all over again! Do you know how lame that sounds started all over! Oh yeah wihout old actors form Spiderman 1, Spiderman 2, and Spiderman 3 it will never be a good Spiderman!
i agree with you
Spider-man 1 2 & 3, fuckin sucked.. weak ass toby maguire… mary jane had down syndrome…. the fuck… i mean come on mary jane is a bomb shell… kristin dunst isn’t..
1,2,&3 had the exact same plot line…
spider-man 1:
hi im peter parker…. im so depressed becuz i caint have the love of my life… ive got thesae bad ass super powers.. and i still cant tap that ass.. oh no… a burning apartment building… etc etc… my friend harry is a douche… mary janes been kidnapped…. big battle scene that spidey has to save civillians while battling villain and the villain is sumbody he kinda admires… THEY END UP IN A WARE HOUSE.. rigth before the villain dies… he apologizes…..
spider man 2: the villain is someone he kinda admires…. friend harry becomes an even bigger douche… mary jane starts to move on.. pete struggles with his powers some more… big battle scene in the middle of a bunch of civillians that spiderman has to save as he fights the villain …
they end up in a warehouse…… right before the villain dies he changes his mind about being an ass.. and decides he doesnt wanna destroy sum shit…. ooops did i mention mary jane was kidnapped???
3rd movie: villain is someone close to peter… big battle scene in front of people.. mary jane kidnapped…. burning building… one of the villains has a change of heart (in a way) etc etc.. those movies fuckin sucked
oh yeah and harry becomes the ultimate douche.. and after changes his mind and becomes a good guy
It’s like drugs….we know it may cause harm yet we all want a fix. Spider-man will always make the big screen and top chart as long as the crew member remained on the project……more over YOU DO NOT KILL THE GEESE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGG ALSO YOU DO NOT CHANGE A WINNING TEAM YOU ONLY CHANGE STRATEGY.
totally agree. peter parker was no clark kent. franco wouldve been great as spiderman.
How come anYone expects Peter parker character to be Hot?
wrong!
Doesnt Lex Luther from Superman say that?
he origionally auditioned for peter parker but didnt get the role
Mike, I don’t think you know what you’re talking about… Peter Parker is not tall in the comics, he’s 5′10” and significantly smaller than just about every other significant hero in the Marvel Universe. And Parker is not a smart-alec, nor a stud, in his “real” life (although he was when he put on the mask), he was a bookish, awkward nerd who eventually grew into a confident yet introspective man.
Tobey was an inspired casting choice, a major reason for the movies’ success, and we’ll miss him a lot.
agreed.
a reboot is a mistake i would complete the franchise with Tobey
you are right
Word. Yoe hit the nail on the head. It’s stupid to do a reboot. To many reboots screw things up. Next thing you know it will be Spidergirl. (Did I say that?)
yes it WOULD be a big mistake to make a reboot. Comic fans are ALWAYS going to complain about comic films. The cast WAS wonderful. Most notably the actor who played Aunt May!!
Yes no 3 WAS a little wonky….but lets not foget the easter egg in the film that deals with venom
Rebooting a film series that was high quality in the first place would look stupid with a new cast.
I am big fan of Spidey. I agree, Peter Parker is just a regular guy. Tobey was the right election for this. Peter is not tall at all, he is not a stud (he gets lucky as Spidey though, LOL).
Also agree, the first two movies were great, my favorite the 2nd. The third not so much, the FX were awesome, but the story was kinda rushed. Venom needed more, in the comic, Venom is a nightmare for Spidey/Peter for long time.
Anyway, I hope Spider Man 4 or if they reboot the franchise is the best movie ever
well i have to agree with everything u guys are talking about with rebooting as a bad idea.. but i must say… i found tobey to be quite a stud in my book!
a cant agree more
I guess you actually read the spiderman comments unlike those idiots that said Tobey wasn’t a great choice. You are right Peter was a geek and spiderman was his alter ego where he made smart alec comments (which he would never say as spidey)that always thru off his enemies.
on target right!
You and every other idiot who thinks any of these movie were a good reflection of the comics should go take reading lessions and get to it. While the fx were great and some of the actors were cast ok. Your core character was a little drooling cry baby. Tobey is and allways will be a fairy and has tainted the Spider Man name for ever.
tobey was a bad spiderman. i agree that they should’ve casted franco as spiderman. harry osborn is more nerdy looking than peter. tobey seemed to wimpy as spiderman
PETER PARKER WAS NOT SUAVE OR CHARMING!!!! HE WAS A 5′10″ BOOK WORM WHO GOT LUCKY AND GOT SOME POWERS FROM A RADIOACTIVE SPIDER. IF RAIMI AINT DIRECTING< AND MAGUIRE AINT PUTTIN ON THE SUIT< THEN I WILL NOT WASTE MY TIME, MONEY, OR COMIC BOOK KNOWLEDGE ON THIS B.S. REBOOT.
Yes to all
very well said.
besides if you look closer to spiderman 3, you can clearly see, that they clustered 2 movies together. The outcome is not bad at all, but not as consistent and stable as it could be.
I agree, Toby McGuire was a perfect choice. I saw the first one when my kids were small and didn’t think it was my cup of tea so I sort of dozed through it. The 2nd one was fantastic and I loved the 3rd also. I’m a 54 year old female and never ever though I would be such a spider man fan. I must have watched all 3 movies a dozen times! I am in mourning. It won’t be the same.
Good on you, Janie! Kudos from another 50+ female who never expected to be a superhero fan, but LOVES all three Spider-Man movies and has seen them all multiple times. I agree with you 100 percent. I am very sad to hear this latest news. Alvin Sargent’s screenwriting, Sam Raimi’s directing, and Tobey Maguire’s acting were a unique and fabulous combination. You’re right, the new deal won’t be the same.
i think you will find wolverine was only 4 ft odd so your wrong but i disagree with rebooting it how many times can we see how a hero gets there powers lets further in the story……HE WAS BITTEN… MOVE ON SONY……im a massive marvel fan and collector but i will bouycott a reboot same story over and over again lets move on and see some more great villians such as electro, carnage, rhino and vulture….wonder if disneys buy out has anything to do with it.
tobey was great. he gave alot of heart to the character.
Indeed a great pic, great job as spidy
Exactly right. Tobey was the perfect Peter Parker. Now before anyone starts flaming… look at the entire Spider-Man comic series. There were many different versions of Peter by different writers and artists but the basic theme that stuck throughout was his quirky, inadequate, loneliness. When the mask went on… spider man was a cool wise-cracking hero. The story of Peter started when he was in high school and continued into graduating and moving into the working world.
This was portrayed flawlessly by Raimi and Tobey and the new series will be hard up trying to beat that combination.
he’s 6″2 in the comics
He was never tall were did you get thatspidye is 5 foot 9 in the ciomcs. So thats you’re crtiera for a good spiderman?! whatever.
Peter is 5′10. That’s a FACT. Almost everyone’s height is listed in the civil war companion book. It was also stated in issue 10 of spiderman by Daredevil.
Tobey was horrible as Spidey, Spidey is a wisecracker, in these past movies he wasn’t the real spidey!
Now we have a chance to get the REAL spidey in action! The wisecracker we all love! Plus Tobey was too short, he’s 5′8. Two inches too short.
That is ridiculous… So he is 2 inches too short… Did anyone really watch that film and say, “Oh Tobey is 5′8, the REAL Spidey is 5′10.” If anyone has I feel sorry for you because you are a loser
I honestly don’t understand why anyone is focusing on the height of Peter and Tobey. I’d could understand if Tobey was 6′9″ or something, but his height is only a 1-2 inch difference if that! That factor had absolutely no effect on the movies. I could bet that anyone who is bringing up the height factor, only realized it b/c they looked it up on a biography of Tobey Maguire
Tobey Maguire is listed a 5′9″. And Cada323 is right, there is no reason to focus on height as a prime requisite for bad casting, especially when the difference is minuscule. Tobey was only 1 inch shy of Peter Parker’s 5′10″.
So if height really is your main focus in casting then you must have gone nuts over High Jackman as Wolverine given that High is 6′2″ and Wolverine is only 5′3″. LOL
Umm… I had a smallish issue with- not Tobey Maguire’s height, so much as his small shoulders when donning the Spidey outfit… He looked maybe just a teensy bit too small as said superhero. But this was all completely and utterly outweighed by the fantastic acting of Maguire, who managed to bring Parker to life in a way I never imagined possible. The Peter Parker I remember from the comics was always a massive worrier and Maguire captured that beautifully. Also, Spidey was always the sort of superhero who was normally fighting villians much bigger that he was, anyway.
omg ppl hes short for a male… like ppl really are paying attention to the height… give the height thing a rest! tobey was short… peter parker shortish.. w/e. who cares! its a movie! and it was great…. who gives a crap how tall he really is…
SO happy they are doing this. Tobey was a garbage Peter Parker and Spiderman… there was no smart ass to him just weird geek, although he is a geek. I’m a huge fan of the Ultimate universe (minus the direction venom took) so this is going to be a wicked movie. Taylor Lautner better not get cast, Peter is not native for christ sakes.
Please refrain from making racial comments. Taylor Lautner is mostly of Dutch, French, and German descent. Just because he portrays a Native American character in a popular series of movies does not mean he will portray one in the future. While I agree that he does not physically fit the role of Peter Parker, there is no need to bring his ethnicity into this discussion.
Sorry, why would his race not be an issue? You’ll notice that Spiderman is not asian, nor african. The point that Taylor Lautner is part native is relevant because he looks native….
are you stupid taylor would suck as parker
well w/e race taylor is.. he is Hot.. and u must admit.. he looks native american.. and he is part native american….. sadly.. wouldnt make a good spidey…
you are an idiot never bring race into the discussion. You’re probaly the type of person who argues with people but never listens nor do have any valid points. Next time you want to say something… dont.
I dis agree Tobey McGuire was the reason they had such a hit
jealous twisted soul! get a life!
LOOK? I WAS BORN 1966 I’VE BEEN READING SPIDERMAN COMICS SINCE DAY 1, AND TOBY DID A LOT OF JUSTICE TO THIS FILM, COME’ON GUYS GIVE THIS DUDE A BREAK. GO BACK TO THE START AND YOU’LL SEE WHAT I MEAN.
If you were born in 1966 you haven’t been reading Spider-Man since Day One, as he premiered in 1962, I believe it was/ I was born in 1957 and I have been reading Spider-Man since almost Day One. I started collecting at issue number 8 and still have the set up to issue 300. (Anybody in the market?)
So let me say that I agree with you 100 per cent that Toby was a great Spider-Man. Bookish, nerdish, nebbish, just the kind of guy who’d get kicked around the block by guys like Flash Thompson. But also a bit of a smart-ass. I thought it was inspired casting and took the comic movie right back to the origins of the comic book.
Are you serious. Peter Parker in the comics was about 5′ 9″. That is not exactly tall.
umm 5′11″, get it right son
5′10″
http://marvel.com/universe/Spider-Man
Sorry, read the comics. Regardless of how you feel about his acting abilities, Tobey Maguire fit the image of Peter Parker almost perfectly. Hate to burst your bubble, but Peter has horrible luck with women. More often than not, they’d find him cute and funny, someone they’d rather have as a tutor. In the comics, even when Peter manages to find an interested woman, something typically happens in the story to eliminate that possibility. That’s part of what makes his character the everyman schlub.
Also, in the comics he ends up killing Mary-Jane when he marries her because of his … er, spider venom. He can’t get with anyone if they’re going canon on this.
Peter Parker is 5′10″, Tobey Maguire is 5′9″.

Omigod. An inch shorter than the real Peter Parker. This is terrible.
I agree but did you ever hear of a thing called creativity? They took the original idea and put a little spin on it aka Peter Parker not being a “stud” and being a sort of social outcast. That is part of what made the series fresh and unique while still retaining a lot of the Spiderman in the comics we know and love. This also happens in reboots of movies. Nobody would pay to see a reboot if everyone knew what was coming around every corner. While I agree with you and hope they go more with the comic this time, I was glad to see a unique take on the series. It added another conflict to one of the many subplots.
no way i will not watch the crappy new movies tobey was the ONLY spiderman
i agree
me too………….
I don’t think looks make a character. People talked about James Bond having to have dark hair (that was the stupidest thing I ever heard). Daniel Craig was simply awesome. With Spiderman I don’t like the whole high school angle because I cannot get the idea that it will try to be like Twilight (could there be anything worse, no I don’t think so, maybe “I Spit on your Grave part 7″) Honestly, I’m getting burned out on the superhero movie. They’ve been cranking those creaking boards out for 10 years now and they’re all beginning to look and sound the same. Big budget and loud noises.
First of tobey was horrible venom was ridiculous they need to find a good actor and a gritty story spiderman was about tough decisions and how messed up peters life was before and after he put on the mask we need a story that shows with great power comes great responsibility I say they have curt conners go lizardman and throw the kingpin in the mix but don’t have him be Micheal Clarke Duncan he wasn’t black and yes I brought up race whooops dude don’t freak out
You are sooo off.
What ru guys stupid or what?do u want 2 see another flop like Batman with different cast….u should look @ ur comic books or see the series….Sony just screwed things up so don’t forget it u idiots.
There are these things called “words” which convey “meaning” and help make “conversations.” Learn to type and make complete sentences you dumbass. Or, if that’s too many letters for you; lolz u n00b u suxors. Maybe that made sene to you.
On topic, Toby protrayed Peter Parker perfectly. I thuroughly enjoyed the trilogy, though a full movie with Peter in the black costume would have been desirable, and open the door to a real 4th movie plot. Making a ‘reboot’ origin movie is undesirable to me. Batman has been made a movie joke through that type of treatment, and if that’s how they are going to treat spiderman, then I’m not sure I want to bother with it. What is there to recreate? A photography nerd gets bit by a radioactive spider and becomes spiderman. While the idea of Spiderman in 3-D sounds like a neat idea (and with the possibilities, it could be great), starting over with different actors just to do that is a poor decision. If they can’t fix up a script to continue with Spiderman 4, then the company really needs some new writers, as there are hundreds, literally hundreds, of storylines they could pick up and use. Remaking the origin movie is lazy. There’s over half a dozen spiderma cartoons that have done that. Why backpedal? I just hope they dont end up ruining it.
I TOTALLY AGREE. PRODUCERS THINK THEY KNOW WHAT COMIC FANS WANT WHEN THE FACT IS THEY DONT KNOW THEIR ASS FROM A HOLE IN THE GROUND. AND AS FAR AS THE RACE THING GOES, HOW BOUT YOU CAST LUCY LUI AS WONDER WOMAN, EVEN THOUGH WONDER WOMAN HAS BEEN CAUCASION FOR THE LAST 50 SOME ODD YEARS. RACE DOES MATTER WHEN CASTING A COMIC BOOK MOVIE. IF THEY WERE TO CAST WILL SMITH AS CAPT. AMERICA,(WHICH WAS A RUMOR AT ONE POINT) DO YOU REALLY THINK HARDCORE COMIC BUFFS(LIKE MYSELF) WOULD EVEN THINK ABOUT WATCHING IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?
obviously you have never read a captain america comic as the original captain was a african american has they was doing experiments on slave (IN COMES WILL SMITH)as for the spiderman films they was great with toby in but its getting my back up that there taking it back to the begining again he gets bitten we get it move to more gripping story lines sony such as the sinister 6 ……DONT DESTROY THE FRANCHISE WITH A REBOOT
Shame..you obviously you have crap taste in movies and no eye for talent. Go back to reading your comics dude! You understand things better when it’s spelled out for you on paper.
Ok don’t take any offense to this but, Mike and Spideyfan, you guys are fools, sorry to say. You two ae getting on Tobey because he’s what, 2″ shorter than the comic book version of peter parker, something that had no actual correlation to the quality of the movie what-so-ever. And really, James Franco is in actuality a rich smooth pretty boy type which is why he was perfect as Harry, NOT Peter. Mike you say you read the comics, but you speak of Peter Parker as if he was never a nerd and was a cool dude who could get the girls, which is completely false. The girls saw him as a nerd(meaning not attractive nor charming) it was only after he was spiderman for sometime that it changed,so I admit the nerd did not last for his entire life, also he was really only a smart-alec when he put on the mask and became spiderman, that’s when he was the quip dealing dude we all know…oh and Tobey Maguire was remarkable as Peter Parker/Spiderman
I AGREE IF THATS A PROBLEM 2 INCH THEY MUST AHAVE BEEN DEVASTATED WHEN JACKMAN TOOK THE ROLE OF WOLVERINE WHEN THE IS ONLY 4FT ODD BY THE WAY JACKMAN COULD NEVER BE REPLACE ……… GREAT CASTING FOR ALL THE MARVEL FILMS
seriously
can Sony please call SHIA LABEOUF!!!
I agree, but sony waste to much time to get rid of raimi and the cast. Take the Hulk’s example, they made just one movie and they realize it was bad, then they reboot. But there are three Spider man movies and a reboot could be a little unstable for Sony Pictures. P.D. Sam Raimi sucks.
THIS IS GETTING FREAKIN RIDICULOUS!!! Rebooting is just another wod for remakes..why are movies that are not that old already being remade!! we need a damn law that a movie can’t be rebooted or remade unless its at leat 20 years old…a few exceptions can apply like if the original movie was total crap..but Spiderman wasn’t it made alot of many and can be remade in 20 years!! hollywood has officailly lost all creativity!!!
…agree
I absofrigginlutely agree!!! I’ve been saying this for years or since studios have decided to “reboot” franchises. What happened to the good ‘ol days when movies where remade after a couple of decades? Batman didn’t reboot in the until 15 years later! Even more for the Superman franchise! C’mon Hollywood!!! “Reboot” is a very lazy excuse to sell us the same story over again. We just saw the Spidey origin! It doesn’t need to be remade and it doesn’t need a new team. Just write a great Spidey 4 script!!! I’m sure that was all Raimi wanted.
i think tobey made a good spiderman especially in spiderman 3. i will be very happy to see him in the next spiderman 4 not the remake of spiderman
I’m sorry, but I was not a fan of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. Maybe we’ll get a movie that will actually work properly and not totally bastardize the comics. Yes, I understand it’s a different Marvel universe, but let’s face it. They were pretty inaccurate and didn’t provide a good sense of wonder for me. I’m excited to see them remade. But in all likelihood this one will suck, too.
I agree , I mean spider man had web shooters , they weren’t just there cause Parker was bit by a spider .I’m down for the remake , I mean look at the new batmans there as great as tim burtons and better, because they learned from problems with earlyer BM scripts . Infact I wanna see the scaler spider man he was the shit!! Also Spider man 3 SUCKED ASS PEOPLE!!
i totally agree,
Tobey made a damn good spiderman, him and kirsten dunst and sam raimi, they made 3 excellent spiderman movies. they were great.
i hate when you see somebody so right for the parts in a movie or franchise, and then boom, they are gone.
i really hope they can get this right before they lose their audience. in my opinion, no offense to anyone else, they already had the people from the first 3 movies to make number 4 great, they just needed some extra people to add some special spice to the movie.
I personally wasn’t fond of kirsten dunst as Mary jane. Mary jane was SMOKING hot and Dunst was cute, but she was no MJ.
could not agree more!!!!!
The franchise began a decade ago. I’d like to see a remake. they are always better than the original.
ok…. not every remake is a good one…. seriously… in my opinion nothing is like the classic originals! i mean come on. they are not always better! look at batman! rly? kept getting worse and worse! (in my opinion)
I HATE REMAKE-HATERS. You are ridiculous!!! Good stories should be told all over again. Look at Shakespeare. He died 400 years ago. But somehow they keep remaking his plays. And by the way, I LIKE STORIES WHERE SUPERHERO BATTLES A GREAT VILLAIN!!!
TRUE DAT
Spiderman and Shakespeare? Are we saying that JD Robb is the next Hemingway? Certainly they should give James Patterson the Pulitzer. While you’re going down that road why not say that Andy Dick is the greatest actor to speak the English language. They’re not remaking a classic movie here or a classic story they are remaking what is known in Hollywood as “MONEY” that’s all this is about.
I whole-heartedly agree — Enough with the frickin’ reboots!!!!!
If you’re gonna wait to 2012 to release a film, use that extra year to get the script right, and continue the story that Raimi and McGuire started!
Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater!!!!!!
amen!
amen to that!
They’re not remaking the movie. Spider-man is based on a comic book. They’re just making another interpretation of the comic. I wouldn’t call this a remake by any standard. In fact, I would say this is a necessary step. Tobey was getting too old to play Spider-Man anyway. He couldn’t pass as someone in his early twenties anymore, let alone a teenager. And, by the way, Hollywood lost all creativity years ago. I haven’t seen a good ORIGINAL film come out of a big studio in years. Most of the films considered to be good these days are either based on books or comics. If you want to see a good ORIGINAL film, you should check out the independent circuit.
Couldn’t agree more with everything you said.
It’s called The Hurt Locker.
I am a SPiderman fan, before Tobey, back to comics and Saturday morning cartoons. I also am very very much a movie fan. I agree with a lot of the comments regarding the movies. 1 was good, 2 was excellent and 3 tried too hard. I am against a reboot at this time. I am especially against it i they try to turn it in to another Twilight(garbage) movie saga. SPiderman is not meant to be sappy. He spins a web any size catches thieves just like flies..look out!!!
heck yes brother! cept.. i do like the sappy twilight saga!

agree about the movies!
yeah spiderman love that song… u should hear michael buble’s jazz version! <3
All of you need to realize that Hollywood is just a movie factory. Most of the people who make the movies are the same as the guys who make nuts and bolts for a living: Unionized factory employees paid very well to churn out an endless supply of the same product.
Like “The Critic” said, “Hollywood will keep making bad movies if YOU keep paying to see them.” The same goes for all of the remakes and reboots. They can’t lose, whether you hear it’s bad or good, you’re still going to pay to see HOW bad or good it is.
Enjoy the nightmare.
Hollywood has been putting out what I think is junk for a long time, then every now and then they surprise us. What amazes me, and it shouldn’t, is that I can leave what I think is a horrible movie and find out others loved it. We are all given different tastes and the god given right to get up and leave a theatre, we all have voices that can warn others not to go see it. Free speech allows us to post our comments and ideas on this website. I have read on this page people who loved Tobey as Spidey and people who didn’t. Some will welcome a new Spiderman and some wont. My opinion, which is my own, is it is too soon.
definatley, some1 talking sense well said spidey fan
Agreed–”Reboot” is just “remake”. New, original ideas? Nope, lets make sequels! Nope, lets just remake the last one!
Crap–just re-release it with a new movie poster! Ha!
Get a clue. Remakes and reboots are the life blood of hollywood since day one. Do you know how many versions of Ben Hur there are that predate the Charlton Heston version? 4. Freakin 4. Hollywood has been rebooting and remaking movies since they opened shop. “Lost all creativity”? They never had it like you imagine they do. If they would’ve rebooted superman instead of following the lame ass christopher reeves version to its conclusion, we would’ve been much better off.
Just quit pretending hollywood is anything other than what its always been; out for a profit, remake or not. Thinking anything else is makes you sound like a 14 year old fan boy who has no understanding of the real world, via hollywood.
You are so right. I’ll vote for that law.
oh man dude i agree with dmorr
i completely agree. i was not a fan of tobey or the directing of sam, who i think ruined the spiderman movies more than tobey. Although i loved the first one the franchise was stabbed in the back by the second film and raped and murdered in the third one
Sam Raimi and tobey made the spider man movies come to life. They did a great job. Are you kidding me. You are so stupid to say that the second movie was crap. It’s one of the best movies ever made.
u mad.
2nd and 3rd movies were the worst “comic book” movies ever made. Get cancer pls.
Yeah, because wishing someone has cancer is totally the way to be cool, asshole. Still, i do believe that the second movie was good, but the third movie just ruined the series. I’m not going to say whether a reboot is a good idea, or a bad one, since it’s too early in the development to decide.
Comments about the movie are fine, but the comment on cancer is in very poor taste-even as a joke!
I HAVE read the comic book. I’m 46 yrs. old and have been reading the comic book since I was 15 or thereabouts. Tobey Maguire most emphatically is Peter Parker: or at least as close to it as 10 yrs to tell 3 stories (as opposed to 10 yrs allowing you to tell, what? 360 stories? not including guest appearances plus New Avengers, plus Ultimate Spiderman, plus, plus, plus? and thereby allow you to tell and deepen the charectorizations that the format of a 1 hr & 50 min script don’t allow for). My question is simply, what Peter Parker are you Looking at? ‘Cause the everyman shleb who has trouble making his rent, Tobey has down.
Its not so much tobey as it is the story…
spiderman is so much different than they have depicted him…
and the main villian ive been waiting to see was Venom, and they did him horribly…
eddie brock was a football star,
do you think topher could pass for a football star?
and was venom a skinny dinosaur? no, he was a monster who was huge scary and the toughest villian spiderman faced. they made him a joke and i hated that the most.
Carnage was tougher :-p , but I agree with what you said about Eddie!!!
i think you will find carnage outbeats venom even though venom was more popular
yeah venom was a totally fail! they tried squeazing so many stories into one movie… they couldnt concentrate on one thing.. it was all over the place. i was looking forward to venom as well… *sigh* alas…… movie 3… fail! :’(
I think spiderman is great the the way it is now!!!!!!!!!!!! People have a right to say their opinion, but I was raised to listen to everyones ideas then state my opinion. What happenend to people respecting each other?
Tobey was a great Peter Parker, but by the end of movie three the series was out of focus. Don’t know if a fourth movie would have been any good creatively, as #3 was a bit of a mess. So a reboot makes sense.
a reboot does not make much sense. just make the fourth better instead of starting all over again.
Good thing you apparently didn’t read them or else your comment would have been a little more accurate than it was incorrect.
Tobey was great! Stick to your comics pal!
Toby was PERFECTLY cast! anyone who doesn’t think so…DIDN’T read the comic books!!
Tommy Carnage got right!!! I’m a Spidey fan from the 60s!!! The story is ALL about Peter Parker, the wimp and the nerd who acquires his Spidey powers and “steps up” to become a hero.
Stan Lee and Steve Ditko re-invented the “hero” for my generation. Heck,I was a mere kid at 11 when Marvel Comics took over my world. Sam got as close to my Spidey as I could has hoped!!!
Sam Raimi, (with very minor concerns) NAILED the Peter Parker character in Spider-man 1 and 2. My opinion is that Sony and the “higher-ups” via the script and pre-mature introduction of Venom, screwed Sam Raimi on Spider-man 3. Hey… I wasn’t there.
Studio wonks have the POWER, but NOT the PASSION to bring great characters to life!
I’ll reserve any further opinions until Spider-man 4 comes out.
But, as a LONG time Spidey/Sam Raimi fan…if I’m not impressed with Spider-man 4, EVERYONE is goin’ to hear about it!!! Jus sayin’.
Did you actually read the comics? or did you just look at the pretty pictures, because you seem to have absolutely no idea what your talking about. Sam Raimi raped the image of the webhead, and spat out his usual garbage catering to morons, and well, fokes that sound like you.
You, like most of the people sharing your ad populem, are a pretender. Stop. You obviously haven’t been reading the comics. Certainly not since they came out.
Fact: the creators of the spiderman hero endorsed and liked the movies. Obviously, they felt everything was in place. Obviously the choice of casting was correct- since your opinions don’t matter, being that- opinions.
As for Spiderman 4? Hope it goes well. The point of the matter is, “will it be a good movie?” I look forward to seeing how it goes.
Fisrt of all, the Peter Parker of the comic books showed a sense of humor and wit that was completely missing from Tobey’s portrayal. Secondly, Peter is also shown to be technically savy, in the comics he was always building devices to use as Spider-Man. Does anyone recall the Spider tracers? Or how about his freaking web-shooters? In the beginning, I thought Tobey was the perfect casting choice, but his voice later came to grate on my nerves, and his life on screen never seemed to get any better. I know Peter had it bad in the comics but he didn’t have it THAT bad. Lastly I feel it is time for something fresh after the fiasco that was Spider-Man 3. Give the fans the real, honest-to-the-comics Spider-man they have been waiting for.
I’m thinking the Spiderman movie debuts past Avengers and Marvel uses the Avengers movie to introduce the new Spiderman since I’m reading this as “Young” Spiderman, not necessarily an origin story.
this is bullshit. seriously. Toby was great. Raimi was great. now they wanna force us to forget 1,2 AND 3 by casting a 16yr old. how stupid will that be?????????
I agree with that! theyRe Just Ruining the stories from 1,2,and 3!
ya the franchised is screwed. Raimi was THE director for this movie and Tobey McGuire was THE guy to be spiderman and it wont be spiderman without him in my opinion. I didnt really like the 3rd one and was hoping the 4th would bring a little credibility back to the franchise seeing as there were so many options to explore and Raimi and Mcguire were back on board but now, as much as i hate to say it, this mess looks like it will damage the franchise but hopefully im proven wrong.
According to Marvel Comics Spiderman is only 5′ 10″ and weighs in at only 165Lbs. Just go to their website and look up his bio. He’s short and skinny. Sounds like Toby to me.
CARNAGE!!!!!!!!!!!
We can’t deny the fact that if ever someone else will star as Peter, it would be a different impression, it’s like someone is impersonating Spiderman. when you remove the mask and its not Tobey, it’s not Spiderman!
…Are you seriously retarded? Seriously. Tobey was too whiney and doe-eyed. As far as I recall, Peter is a smart ass. They could atleast get the character right.
Hey, and maybe, just maybe, we can get an X-men remake. A worthy one.
def agree with you on this one. wont be the same with out tobey! i loved him as spider man.. i watched the cartoons and read some of the comics and i thought he was spot on.
yes i said some comics.. im not an expert so no need to chew me
out. im only 20… lol
if you change the cast of the past movies… for sure you will loose ratings….
seriously! leave it as it was
I always said they could have done a better job of casting Peter Parker but Tobey actually grew on me and did a fantastic job in the movies.
This is a really bad idea. We saw Peter in high school in Spiderman 1 and now they want us to watch a movie, entirely surrounding him in school, AND, they want to change the character to a new cast member. Dumb.
This series should go back to negotiation or just shelf it for about 20 years and remake it later. People will not make the same fuss if you reboot what has been a phenomenal series. Sony is dropping the ball and now they have no competition for Batman and Superman, great job.
If Sony was smart, they would simply age Spiderman a bit so that a change of character would make sense. Peter was young in the first three, age him a bit and change the cast member, but PLEASE, do not reboot this series, that’s the worse idea EVER!
This is the worst news Ive heard in while.
The Spider-man trilogy is the best superheroe series.
Who’s idea was is it to decline raimi and maguire ?
Was this sony’s idea ? If so I will throw out all my sony products , including my PS3 !
The guy above me is a moron. A serious moron. Did you not see Iron Man? Don’t give me that Spider-Man is the best crap. And maybe you should go on and toss out that PS3. Gonna be useless in a few years anyway!
moron says what?
Are you kidding? Tobey was A great Fit for that Character!
tobey was NOT a awful spider man he was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i totally agree with you. toby was a whiny peter parker. plus that stupid emo parker in spiderman 3. wow, that was soooooo dumb!
if by so dumb u mean incredible hot! that dance! hilarious! it was my fav part!
this sucks man rebooot im not going to watch it
okay, what did you people like so much about the second movie? the part where peter parker gives himself gene surgery with his brain and loses his powers because he was such a wuss? and what was so great about the parts of the third one OTHER then the bits the studio execs forced him to do? i LOVED how sandman got his powers by walking into an unexplained nuclear sand tornado machine he stumbled upon after a robbery. really convincing. reboot sounds good, toby sucked. i bet the reboot will suck too, though
you obviously are not a fan of SPiderman…no one other than Tobie should play this part….The new movie will suck without him.:(
Jake Gyllenhaal looks alot like Tobey Maguire. Why not replace Tobey with Jake?
I really liked the first 2 films in the Spider-Man series. The third one didn’t sit right with me. They killed Venom off way too soon. He is one of Spideys deadliest foes. At least the villans in the 1 & 2 lasted the entire movie. I really didn’t think that Tobey is a made a good Peter Parker. Tofer Grace (who played Venom) would have been a good choice. I also thaught they miscast Tofer. Eddie Brock is a big dude, not a skinny nerd. Not taking anything away from either actor, just that they were the wrong choices. As much as I onny care for Tobeys Peter Parker, I think they should keep him. Changing the main characters makes the franchise less desirable. For example the first batman series starting with Michael Keaton. He was by far the best choice for that role.
You’re an idiot!!!! Spiderman is nothing without the original cast….who cares if Tobey doesn’t look like a freakin cartoon!!! to reboot with an entirely new cast is beyond ridiculous and anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot as well!!!!!!
My son has watched the trilogys for the past seven years and is devasted by the loss if Tobey. He can’t understand why.The impact he has had on my son is incredible.Ge cries and holds onto his movies and figurines.A sad loss.I hope marvel reconsiders. He refuses to see spiderman 4.
Please reconsider loyal spiderman fans.

I think Sony is making a huge mistake by starting over from the beginning. The Spider-Man Trilogy started off in High School, and that’s where they want to take us back too? The beginning?
Now they want to replace Tobey with some cheap knock-off? Well, I say replace Tobey with the best look-a-like in the world,(Jake Gyllenhaal)and keep the franchise going in the right direction, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.
the rock should be spider man lol
Tobey was great atspiderman. Why whine about his height? Hugh Jackman is much shorter than Wolverine and yet he’s perfect
okay im confused.. wolverine “is” taller than hugh jackman! hugh is 6″2′ that is way tall! and everywhere i look wolverine is 5″3′ thats a whole foot!
First off, as a fan and a owner of the 3 Spider-man movies lets look at this in an intelligent way. All 3 Spider-man movies made tons of $$$! All were done in a way to show you the personalities of each characters. I think Spider-man 3 got a bad rap, i think it was awesome. I guess the 1 thing i wish they would have done was to not kill off Harry Osborne and to leave an opening for venom to come back for another movie. I think all 3 movies were done perfectly and for Sony to do a Spider-man “reboot” is a horrible idea. If Sam Raimi need more time, then give him more time! I love Marvel comics and the spider-man storylines. Tobey is spider-man! Any other movie hes made doesnt compare to him as spider-man. all the main characters being played are great picks. Hollywood needs to listen to the fans! Wheres Stan Lees thoughts or feelings towards this dumb idea? I honestly was expecting another amazing storyline for spider-man 4 including Carnage, Venom, the lizard (great plot with Dr. Connors). I mean we have all these great plots and great actors in hollywood to play these characters and they want to “scrap” and quit using tobey, sam, and kirsten? I am just a fan, a marvel enthusist, and a owner of the movies and comic books. Spider-man is my favorite comic book superhero along with many others. Dont make a new spider-man movie! It will make $$$ only because fans like me will want to see how horrible it really will be. Please please please stick with what you had going! Even if its w/ Anne Hathaway and John mahlkovic, redoing a great franchise to start over is stupid and you will disappoint many many people! But..who am i? I am just a fan remember! Its our $$ that makes these movies so great isnt it? How about this, Hollywood and Sony, email me or call me, have me write your script and lets get rolling with spider-man 4 already!!!
tobey please do spiderman 4.
i am a 14 yr old boy and im in love with the spiderman
movies. its really making want to scream.
please do spiderman4
They were excellent films….just another example of studios ruining a franchise.
this is a mistake and i won’t be paying to see it.
CAST ME IN EVIL DEAD IV!!!!!!
Long live rami, and tobey will be the one and only spiderman
that is soooooooooooooooo stupid to not hav Tobey he is the freaking star for the past 3 movies so they better make another one with Tobey!!!!!!!!!!
Spider-Man is not a high school film! Aren’t there enough of those out already? You already made the beginning of the story. If you’re gonna make something different, go forwards a ways, not backwards. There’s so much still to work with. Everything doesn’t have to be an Origins story.
Nikki scoops the world again. What would we do without you?? We’d wait for days for this to appear on Yahoo…..
This is part of the Hollywood problem. Rebooting a franchise that’s barely eight years old?!? C’mon Sony. Figure it out or try something new. The ink is barely dry on Spidey 3 and we’re rebooting the whole thing?
Ridiculous.
Very interesting … I’ll be curious to see how they reboot it.
Might this interest James Cameron? He hovered around the project for years before Raimi was tapped…
If Sony claims they want a good story for their franchise above all else (and everyone should be jumping up with joy for this), then I hope they make Cameron stay as far away from this as possible. No thanks. Don’t need my favorite comic book character of all time lecturing me about urban sprawl or whatever message Cameron chooses next to hammer his audiences over the heads with.
Spidey peaked with 1. Here’s praying for a badass reboot.
Whining about a message, this is what the world has come to. Idiots who think real meaning is “lame” and terrible contrived plot devices as seen in The Dark Knight and elsewhere are “awesome”. Gimme a break.
Oh please, you don’t want ANY message? Must be tough going to movies then, since a large percentage have “a message.” Perhaps its any hint of “Green”? I bet you hated Wall-E too.
Although Wall-E was good, there was a clear green message. Before seeing the movie, I was afraid it was going to be a “hammer-over-the-head” message but it wasn’t too bad.
Urban sprawl FTW! What would spidey swing from in suburbia? He’d have to get a moped. What a bleak dystopia!
Spidey peaked with 1??? Are you kididng? Spiderman 2 is widely considered to be one of the greatest superhero movies of all time.
Grow up! You want mindless crap so you don’t have to think? I hope Cameron comes on board and stuffs some real lecturing right down your scrawny throat!
Are you kidding me?! James Cameron with a message??? Avatar was the most vapid piece of tripe (with an admittedly pretty coating). You guys seriously think there was a “deep” message in Avatar? Chrimeny, keep Cameron far away from spiderman as possible, not because we fear a deep message or preaching, but because he’s the new George Lucas (ie. a washed up blowhard who got famous on his first films, turned into a control freak, and showed how horrible their creative visions are once they have complete control over their projects).
If you want a sermon, go to church, if you want a sermon in 3D, go see Avatar
Preaching and lecturing in films is immature and childish, a message is not and it takes a good writer to convey a good message without preaching and lecturing!
Because of this I’m kind of afraid of Cameron directing Spidey, but on the other hand, if he directed someone else’s script, he could do it justice!
Perfect move. Don’t defile me any further.
this has been in the works for a few weeks. expect a spider-man set in high school like marvel’s popular ultimate comics version.
James Cameron, it’s a miracle. Please make the Spidy you wanted 12 years ago.
James, please, please. I beg of you.
Some one for God’s sake, get James Cameron on the phone and sign him up. NOW!!!!
Wow… if Raimi said he couldn’t go forward creatively *after* delivering the phoned in p.o.s. named Spiderman 3, the script must have been really, really bad.
Raimi was forced to include Venom in Spidey 3 and throw the whole movie off balance. He wasn’t going to let the same thing happen again.
This is a great exclusive, Nikki. It’s one of the biggest stories in Hollywood, that the public will care about. Good job.
Reboot? Really? Tarded.
Good news if you ask me. So was Malkovich full of it when he said he’d be the Vulture?
You don’t “re-boot” a franchise so soon after the most financially successful entry in the series. This is beyond idiotic. Why does Tobey have to be removed from the film? Are we now going to have to have a new origin story and new Green Goblin story?
I hope they at the VERY LEAST have the film pick up after the other movie’s established storylines. Keep some of the central cast. Otherwise, this is going to go down as one of the biggest franchise blunders in film history.
spiderman 3 was horrible….and toby whatever the hell sucks at acting. putting him in the role of peter parker was a blunder. this is going to be a very good thing for spiderman.
no its not…
You idiots need to realize that out of all the comicbooks made into movies they NEVER followed the stories exactly the way they were. They had to change them up fir the big screen and to make them seem more realistic. Personally I think a reboot would kill the spidey series, however I’m still looking forward to the new Captain America, Thor, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers. And if your not going to bring back the original Spiderman cast then put it to rest don’t start a reboot bs besides there is no need to go backwards. I think carnage would be a hell of a villain for spidey in number 4. And howabout adding mysterio or rhino to the mix. Give spidey the villains that were famous in the comics! But alas I fear spidey is going to hang himself with his web if they do a reboot. RIP spiderman
u obviously havent cn Brothers… tobey was brilliant in that film! genius! a bit scary when he was angry though.. small guy lots of anger! lol hes a great actor.
Not true. could possibly be the best reboot to date. marvel has several storylines (one origin story) and spidey at different times in his life. ULTIMATE spiderman would be a great way to go. Since the other marvel flicks are using the Ultimates scenario as well.
Tobey left cause Raimi did.
SonyPictures
Spider-Man: Summer 2012: Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.
This is hard to believe. Maguire was on Conan two weeks ago talking about it.
Conan is being rebooted, as well.
what a difference two weeks makes…
both are out on their ear…
The ink isn’t even dry and already @sonypictures has started talking about it.
i respect raimi’s genre, but good riddance. spider-man 3 was awful.
not saying everthing in this genre needs to go the batman route and find its audience in its darker tone, but spider-man 3 was a disaster. vanderbilt is a great writer, i’m anxious to see what they put out.
What happened to Spider-Man 3 wasn’t Raimi’s fault. Raimi didn’t want Venom in the movie, or even in this series from what I have heard and read. Sony wanted to make all the hardcore fanboys happy and basically forced it to happen. From my understanding, Spider-Man 3 was already under way when the producers, and the studio, stepped in and wanted to change everything to bring in Venom.
Also, I found Tobey Maguire’s performance as Peter Parker and Spider-Man really good.
dude they made venom soooooo bad in s-man 3 because raimi iddnt like symbiotes like fuckin reboot is gonna be a mess
This is really baffling. Usually you go the reboot route as a response to financial failure. These movies were massive blockbusters, even the universally hated third installment. Why not just get a new director and continue the story arc? Or better yet, why not push the stupid release date back to give Raimi the breathing room he needs to iron out script kinks? These are the problems that arise when you set out to make a release date instead of a movie.
Well noted, Mark.
When you put together Spidey 1 and 2, you realize the second movie isn’t the usual sequence. There’s character growth. Raimi, with these two movies, accomplished a hard task: making action movies in which the characters are not superficial.
Each movie has its own story, but there is a greater story arc, supposed to close with 3. From the beginning Raimi said he didn’t like Venon, but was convinced by Avi Arad to include him in 3.
The third movie ended up with so many subplots: Harry becoming the New Goblin, Peter’s marriage proposal, the triangle with Gwen, the Sandman’s origin, the rivalry with Eddie Brock as a photographer at the Bugle, the symbiont taking over Peter, Venon’s origin, Harry’s redemption. On the first two movies there was a cause/effect reaction, on the third things happened by chance, because it was impossible do develop so many subplots in one single movie.
I think it’s unfair to blame Raimi for the disappointment the third movie was. And I think that’s the reason he left Spidey 4, he didn’t want to be in the same position.
What is really strange is the fact that Sony made its mind about the 2011 release date for Raimi, but the moment he stepped out they pushed back the movie to 2012.
i agree all of the words you said rick
ITS ALL ABOUT $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Is this a sick joke?
Im receiving this news at 22:41 UK time, and really, im disgusted with Sony.
Not only are they re-booting a franchise less than a decade old, they are doing so without even thinking how it will affect the audience. I only ever watched Spiderman 3 because of Raimi. No way in hell will i be watching this god awful reboot unless its helmed by someone equally as brilliant, which, we all know it wont be, as no director worth his salt will, or should, sign up to do a project strangled of creativity byt he studio.
Oh you liar. You’ll see it opening weekend.
*LOLZ*
This is best for Raimi; clearly the studio just wasn’t going to let him have his head-even though he’s earned it.Of course, fans are screwed, because Sony will never get a good director after this… and obviously they don’t really want one; they want a hack who’ll give them what they ask for. I’m sure they’ll have no trouble finding one.
A REBOOT?!?!?! This is the dumbest idea I ever heard! The original Spider-Man franchise was fine! Sure, Spider-Man 3 was a bit of a disappointment, but it’s nothing that couldn’t be fixed. I really don’t think I can picture a Spider-Man movie without Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. If they can’t get Spider-Man 4 off the ground, then screw it. End the franchise. The public has already moved on to Batman and Iron Man anyway.
But to try to reboot the franchise? That can only end in a disappointment. The public is so attached to the original franchise that even if there is no Spider-Man movie until the inevitable remake 30-40 years down the road, we would still be better off than having a new “re-imagining” of a franchise that was fine to begin with. Why fix something when it’s not broken? If they can’t reassemble the original cast and director for Spider-Man 4, leave poor Peter Parker alone!
I would have expected better from Sony.
“…30-40 years down the road”
Please, at this rate, try a reboot after 5 years, then 3 years, and then we’ll have a re-imagining every other month…
this series should have been rebooted before they ever released the first one! toby was aweful and the stories were worse! if they can work in iron man somewhere that’d be awesome!
It WAS broken. The franschise was great because we hadn’t seen it at this caliber. But the 3rd crushed all that. They need to move to the Ultimates story and get a comic director. (not that Raimi was bad, just that he’s gone now)
How is the public attached to the original series? I hate the originally series. This is excellent news.
This needed to happen. The franchise was stale. While it would have done big box office, it most likely would have been a heartless sequel.
It’s better to get a new team in there creatively although the fact of the matter is if a new Spider Man movie comes out in 2 years, it’s too soon.
The last three movies and the world Raimi and the character Tobey created are still fresh in everyone’s minds.
If Sony wants a new flick fast, they should be smart enough not to do another stupid origin story since the origin is still fresh in everyone’s minds.
Pehaps, treat Spidey like Bond and just move on with a different actor in the part and make sure the story reflects what fans want out of their movies today. If it’s too light and cheeky, it’ll bomb.
Otherwise, you may need to have a passing of the torch somehow and convince Tobey to come back and give the mantle of Spidey to the new actor through some freak accident/experiment.
Perhaps Tobey inadvertently cures himself of his powers somehow?
Anyway, it’s good to see the studio and the filmmakers cut bait and not shove it down our throats because they know the world loves Spiderman movies.
Raimi and Maguire leaving doesn’t at all meant Spider-Man 4 is “scrapped.” A new director and a new star may not make the deadline, but any soft reboot could still very easily be called Spider-Man 4.
Did you not read the title of this article?
No way.
To be absolutely honest, it seemed a no-brainer to turn the doc into Lizard and then have Kraven the Hunter called to the city to clean him up since Spidey refused to take him out. In the end, its one big fight between Kraven, Lizard, and it ends with Spidey captured and waking up to see Kingpin standing over him. Done. Ass in Seats. 500 million.
You start bringin’ in weird bad guys like Vulture (wtf?), and you got yourself a 200 million dollar version of Army of Darkness. Raimi may be the man, the Evil Dead may be cool, but that kinda horseshit is not gonna sell tickets the way the studio wants. I can’t believe I’m sayin’ this, but I actually agree with the studio. Plus, Spidey got a little boring. Three movies is enough man.
Weird bad guys like Vulture? Unlike weird bad guys like Sandman? Sorry, I was way more interested in Sandman over Venom in SPM3. If Raimi wanted Vulture that bad, it means he had a good plan for him.
Studios love to throw a ton of crap into a movie. Remember Arnold and John Carey in Batman? Catwoman and Penguin? It like those 1970’s and 80’s disaster movies where every loose actor in Hollywood was thrown into a maelstrom of pointless apocalyptic action. I’d rather have a tight story than careening superhero porn any day.
And as for rebooting a franchise, look at the incredible hulk 2003 vs 2008. That is what the studio is thinking, but as other astute posters have noted, you reboot a failure, not a success.
Raimi, make the Warcraft movie, take points on gross, do it well, cash a huge paycheck, and then take over Sony as they loose tons of money with their e-book reader.
Well that’s not a smart move for Sony. Why reboot a franchise when the movie they are planning to make was already done and was a pretty good movie back in 2002?
This is very dissapointing. The third film was fatally bad but I was hoping the fourth could be redeming since the first two from the franchise are extremely enjoyable and entertaining films. I’m sure audiences will forgive the shitty third if they can revive that fun from the first two. Please say this is just a joke.
Spiderman goes back to high school? The casting possibilities are endless. What about Nicholas Hoult?
I smell a “Taylor Lautner” lurking behind that mask…
Well…..no.
Because he’s a HORRIBLE dead-eyed actor
So Spider-Man 3 made $890 million dollars worldwide, and Sony decide the franchise needs a fresh start. Whoaah, this could be a HUGE mistake. I think Sony have a hit with Spider-Man BECAUSE of Raimi, and they’re going to realise that come Summer 2012.
A teenage Spiderman? The casting possibilities are endless. What about Nicholas Hoult?
taylor lautner as peter parker
If Taylor Lautner plays Peter Parker, you might as well shoot me in the head right now.
ok how about neither one of those guys.. neither nichlos or taylor… a guy from the uk as spiderman and a guy that looks like a native american?!? no no no….
not a racial comment about taylor… he has native american bg.. GET OVER IT! HE LOOKS IT!
Here we go again! Sam Raimi is a creative genius and Spider 1 & 2 were two of the best super-hero movies ever… regardless of the studio-tampered Spidey 3. It’s getting pretty ridiculous rebooting and remaking projects that are less than 2 years old… and signing up Taylor Lautner for EVERYTHING (i shudder to think — he could be a choice! — maybe they could redesign the costume so he can show his abs! — memo to costuming). I don’t like to be a hater, so I’ll just go have myself a BluRay Spidey marathon…
-
Two of the best? Really? Both were rip-offs of Superman I and II… The first, best and granddaddy of ALL modern day superhero movies…
Congrats Nikki, you just broke the biggest geek/fanboys story of your career. Well Done! Now tell us who’s playing Captain America.
Oh my God… a reboot? Seriously? As if that’s the cure for every failed project. Remember how great Punisher: War Zone turned out? Get a clue, Sony: Audiences don’t care if Raimi is out. Either replace Maguire or just drop the series. You can’t reboot Spider-Man when the latest film isn’t even three years old.
It’s one thing when you approach the project like The Incredible Hulk, but going back to high school and going back into the character intros and whatnot is offensive to the audience. What the hell did we just sit through three movies for? Studios like to pretend this reset button is some kind of all-magical twinkie tool that can save anything, but it’s not. It’s tiresome.
How’s that Fantastic Four reboot coming, Fox? Think that’ll really solve your box office woes? At least they can hide behind the bad returns for FF2, whereas Sony just decided to re-do a series when the last one made $900 million worldwide. Foolish. It’s time people wake up, take Eminem’s advice and say goodbye to Hollywood.
I was rooting for a Raimi-directed fourth film to make up for the studio-mandated mess that was Spider-Man 3 — but no longer.
Congratulations Sony. You get to mess up your fabled property your way.
Are you fucking kidding me , what the fuck is wrong with you i swear to god this has to be the dumbest thing ever , sony can go and fuck themselves because im not watching this movie and i knw alot people wont
Isn’t it a “BIT” too early for a reboot for such a successful franchise?
This is idiotic. I have absolutely no interest in seeing it rebooted. Raimi did a terrific job with the material and it’ll be difficult to top it. In the case of the “Fantastic Four” it’s understandable, here it’s absolutely unnecessary. Refocusing on his “teenage years” would be absolutely of no interest to me. The other issue is that it’ll be hard for fans to go backward.
1) Find another talented director to step in 2)rework the current script 3) move the premiere date to Xmas.
Sony and Marvel are making a BIG mistake here.
Zac Efron’s posse at CAA better be *all* over this. He could use a franchise right now.
As long as the “reboot” doesn’t mean yet another 2 hour origin story, I’m cool with that. We don’t need to watch the origin again.
Big mistake. Sigh…
is this true?
the film series is only 7 years old! why would you do a reboot for something that young?
and, in my opinion, 3 was decent.
Sony, you can fuck right off. Spiderman 3 wasn’t the best of films. but you don’t have to yank the cord on this franchise and then reboot it…
As much as I enjoyed the first two when I was younger, I really do think that Spidey needed a reboot.
Correction to this article…Tobey has made 2 great Spiderman films, and one that made most fans want to gouge their eyes out with their own fingers.
A “reboot” at this stage is just plain silly, in my opinion. The mythos has JUST been established and we’re already going back to basics??? And Joel Schumacher didn’t even get to make the film that killed the franchise to even cause this!
Wow.
Well, let’s hope that this works well.
Too bad the rights can’t just revert back to Marvel. Maybe add Spidey in the Avengers movie.
Ah well. Spidey as a movie is now dead to me. Don’t need to see him get his powers again with a new cast.
This. I certainly don’t have access to their fiscal reports, but Marvel should use a hefty lump of that billion dollar Disney money to get back the rights.
good riddance. Raimi killed the franchise when Spidey was dancing & crying himself silly on the 3rd outing. Fans was revolted by it
Good moves Sony. Good riddance of the stupid director
For the record, most of the problems with Spidey 3 have been attributed to Sony interfering with the franchise. Raimi didn’t want Venom which is what spawned the worst moments in the film. Sony wanted a Venom spin-off, and forced him in. So Raimi phoned the movie in. He only agreed to do 4 if the studio weren’t allowed to do that this time. They tried to meddle again and “creative differences” killed Spidey.
this can only mean one thing. Robert Pattinson will soon be cast as the new Peter Parker.
Sony and Paramount go head to head with Robert vs Taylor.
I doubt Pattinson will take such a gig. Like Leonardo DiCaprio, I’m betting he will reject the mantle of movie star in favor of only taking dramatic roles in serious films – no matter how much his physicality or skill is ill-suited to the task (again, like DiCaprio).
I read somewhere that Pattinson WAS looking at quitting twilight and going to spiderman. but that was a rumour and i doubt it’s true. but still, it’s a possibility.
ok thats so not right. rob pat. as spiderman! give mea break.. y must everyone bring the twilight stars into this… THEY ARE NOT FIT TO PLAY SPIDERMAN! give it a rest twilight saga freaks!
“a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.”
Do we have to go all the way back to the beginning?? So much for my dream of Jim Sturgess taking over the role.
Dammit.
I agree. Why go backwards like that? Why reboot? I can see recast, change schedule, etc. I just don’t get why Hollywood hasn’t yet figured out how to handle comic book properties without crapping all over them. Hey, maybe Joel Schumacher is available!
I wasn’t looking forward to Spiderman 4, but it’s so stupid that they’re rebooting the franchise already. We are now officially an A.D.D. culture.
Geez, enough with people blaming Spider-man 3 on Sam Raimi. He didn’t want that movie. He was forced by Sony to put in venom, and consequently Eddie Brock, and consequently the black suit. Sony wanted Venom, whereas the Vulture (played by Sir Ben Kingsley) was in original talks for the Spidey 3 villain.
But I digress. Without Raimi, I am fine with a reboot. It wouldn’t be the same Spidey without him. Bring in some new blood.
So the Peter Parker/Spidey saga is going to start over again with Parker in Midtown High?
Certainly there were plot lines that the first Spider-Man didn’t pursue and others that it adjusted. But what’s the point?
Oh I know the point. Creativity in Hollywood is at a point where coming up with additional Spidey scripts is too difficult. After all, they have only 40 years or so of comic books to draw from.
I imagine someone’s working on a “reboot” of Harry Potter right now.
There is good news to come out of this: Raimi doing WOW (basically a massive-budgeted version of ARMY OF DARKNESS) will be the most geektastic movie in the history of cinema! Raimi’s practical orcs will MOP THE FLOOR with the hackified corpse of Spidey!
Just how does replacing everyone with people we don’t want and “rebooting” the series make it likely that the 2011 date will be met and with a quality product?
I felt that Spider-Man 3 was Raimi’s Batman Forever and the whole franchise was headed for Batman & Robin territory. But a lot of people here are actually disappointed. I guess from a business standpoint, why scrap the creative core of a cash cow? But I really think this franchise was headed down with Raimi/Maguire/Dunst and I’m actually excited for a reboot. Who cares if it’s only been eight years? I wish they’d rebooted Daredevil after six weeks. Call me crazy, but fresh blood is exactly what Sony needs to infuse here and I think they’re making the right choice. And the current movies were so SOFT anyway… and that has nothing to do with the success of The Dark Knight. These flicks were just cheesy, with none of the cool of Iron Man. I support the move.
Aren’t you sick of these reboots? How many times do we have to watch Batman traumatized by the death of his parents and then battle the Joker? Fine, change the staff and actors, but WE DON’T NEED A REBOOT. Everybody knows Peter was bit by a radioactive spider! There are literally thousands upon thousands of comic books based on Spider-man. Why can’t they just serialize these comic book properties like they do in the comics? Wow, what an original idea…
to answer your question, it’s because the studio pushes extreme storylines where the hero’s life is changed forever (gets married, sires a bastard, wears a costume with nipples) in ways that can’t just be ignored in later movies. Whoops forgot I had an illegitimate son with super powers! Whoops forgot I co-starred with Richard Pryor!
Whereas a series like James Bond has never really changed the character in ways that future movies had to deal with–just about the only piece of “continuity” was when he got married and his wife was killed, which was referenced a handful of times in later movies. The Craig reboot was more about bringing the character into the modern world, where the Cold War is a distant memory.
So if you never change the character much, you don’t have to reboot. That’s why in comics it used to be no one ever got married (exception: Barry Allen), because it imposes too much of a continuity burden on later teams. It’s ironic that comic book editors knew more about preserving the value of their characters than movie studios with billions riding on the outcome do. But short term thinking is what made Hollywood the industry it is today.
i’m inclined to think that everyone posting in praise of a spiderman “reboot” is a paid studio shill. there is no way a rational person could think that this idea has any merit at all.
Spiderman reboot? Boring.
Honestly, in my opinion, This is a good sign. I honestly think most of the Raimi-series’ casting was fairly wretched. JJJ was good, and Green Goblin was alright, but I think they could have done better for Spidey, MJ, Venom, and… well Practically everyone… Also, Vulture? Seriously? They needed to use people like Shocker, or Hobgoblin. Also, by killing off their villains, they lost so much potential. Hopefully the next one will use a combination of what the Raimi series did well, and what the comics did well.
BOYCOTT SONY!!!! What are they thinking??!! They should of let Sam Raimi do whatever he wanted, he is the reason Spider-man was so good. Unless they hire a genius to direct the series I do not see this ending well at all.Tobey Maguire was great as Spider-man the whole cast was, what a shame. If the movie came out a few months late I would of still gone to see it. Sony always has a whole bunch of cheap comedies in theaters anyways why are they worried about having one month open. Spiderman would beat any other movie franchise. WHY?? WHY??? WHY???
This is disgusting. I can’t believe Sony is doing this.
“We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots…”
Are these people delirious? Peter Parker’s roots are pretty solid and strapped down. How would this be better than continuing the series? I can’t think of anything entertaining coming from this. I enjoyed all three of the spider man movies. I don’t plan on watching this one.
James Cameron’s ideas for Spider-Man back in the day were pretty terrible, and anyway he’s too busy working on the Avatar reboot. Strike while the iron’s hot, and all that.
Reboot means they want to Mc Dee it and rush out some crap with a taller WB channel lookin boring dork as peter and oo maybe someone from the Twilght crapola fest,,, a quick buck, dvd at xmas then dead as a zombie 4 a footnote in movie history
“Tobey the elf was an awful Peter Parker anyway, and anyone who thinks otherwise should look at the comic book.”
…and anyone who could say *that* should look at the earliest comics – the ones that *made* Spider-Man such a huge success – before a bunch of no-talent fanboy-favourite artists and writers got hold of it and decided that if they peed in it enough it would taste better.
I remember “Amazing Fantasy” #15 clearly, and i remember how perfectly the first two films caught the feel of the Lee/Ditko glory years.
..and there’s the magic point. If you’ve never read a story with Parker in high school or college (and Ultimate doesn’t count) then you really are ignorant to a large part of Spidey’s history. The large part that Raimi and Tobey NAILED.
I hate this. In agreement with many here, I think rebooting an extremely successful 8 year old franchise is completely ridiculous. I hate Chris Nolan for starting this whole trend as well. I can understand it in some cases but Hollywood is now absolutely taking it too far-I miss the old days of endless sequels, that is what’s so endearing and popular about long running things like Bond and Friday the 13th-in the 21st century it seems nothing gets to make it that far-after one decade you’re old news, time to remake and restart and say screw you to all the hard work done before.
In the good old days, when one needed a change of direction for a series, you brought in new people and did it, but it didn’t mean you had to say what came before didn’t happen, you just did the sequel differently and better. That is what they should just do again, and it will pay off in terms of popularity in the long run-when kids look back and see series run in 2 or 3 movie cycles before restarting again and again, they’re gonna be totally confused.
AC…I think you put it best about bringing in new people and just doing it. I appreciate what Raimi did in directing the films. We all have our favorites. It sounds like Sony sees that Spidey = $$$, and they want their $$$ by a certain date. Raimi doesn’t think he’ll be able to accommodate by then, so Sony says if you won’t do it, someone else will. They already had a back-up script in the waiting, so obviously they expected this. I haven’t seen Sony actually use the word ‘reboot’, I’m quite sure Sony wouldn’t ‘reboot’ the money they made off of the three films! I don’t mind a different set of actors, but the connotation of a ‘reboot’ which is what the new set will be (how else would you go back to high school storyline) would have the viewer disregard nearly everything that’s come before it. That’s the part I don’t agree with. Someone pointed out reboots are for unsuccessful franchises…but this one, despite many people’s dislike of SM3, was a box office smash in every sense of the word. Spiderman movies began to put Sony back up on top, and now Sony says we don’t need you guys (Raimi & crew). Nice work….way to care about consistency and continuity.
Awesome. I hated the first Spiderman movie. So much that I never watched the other two. Sam Raimi did a horrible job. Whoever takes the helm of the next Spiderman, take note. Nobody cares about Mary Jane or Aunt May. Give them each a couple of 5 minute scenes and make the rest of the movie about Spiderman.
Good idea….take the heart out of the character. Go play a damn video game.
How about rebooting GI JOE?
Amen to that! GI Joe has such potential and they made it stupid. And completely ignored things like the fact that we *never* see what Snake Eyes looks like, his love triangle with Scarlett and Duke, or the fact the all 3 characters had brains and used them in the cartoon. It was insulting that Scarlett fell for Ripcord seemingly just because he hit on her AND that they made her the damsel that needed rescuing, but then to use a cop out of mind control to make The Baroness good… And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
You people haven’t had enough of this boring predictable franchise already?
Without Raimi there’s nothing.
Less than nothing.
Fantastic Four nothing.
Unless a director/writer w/ actual vision, like Zack Snyder or Joss Whedon is interested, cast Nicholas Hammond & put Spidey back on TV.
I am so happy now!! I can’t even watch the spider-man movies they are so cheesy and bad acting! Maybe they will make it like the comic books more!
I would NOT REBOOT! I would just continue the story of Spider-Man, like James Bond. The Bond franchise did not do a reboot until a few years ago with Casino Royle. They did a reboot after nearly 40 years of Bond films with a new director and cast from time to time. It would have been stupid that after every three Bond movies, the studio would do a reboot.
It does not make since to reboot Spider-Man for now. I want to see more stories of Spider-Man after high school and college, not more stories of Spider-Man back in High School…..BORING!!!!
I do hope that James Cameron will pick up the director duties for it. We shall see what happens.
Someone mentioned Twilight and this beyond-terrible idea made sense to me… They’re trying to capture the teeny-bopper audience which is why they’re taking it back to high school. Because people are frothing at the mouth over this teenage-angst ridden series, of course it will work for Spiderman, after all he started out in high school! As a female who is NOT enthralled with Edward Cullen, I really don’t relish the idea of going back to high school. My teenage years were enough, thank you. If this is the new story, I think I’ll skip it. Hey, maybe if enough people skip it, they may ‘reboot’ it again with Raimi and Maguire…
Well, this has to be the first time in movie history (let me know if I’m wrong) that a studio has completely rebooted a massively popular franchise which brought in several hundreds of millions of dollars each time with each sequel outgrossing the last one.
This is absolutely WRETCHED news. Raimi created two great movies, one average (three was better than Superman Returns, X-Men 3, and both Punishers to name a few). Most of all, he single-handedly rejuvinated the big-event super hero film. We all owe him our eternal thanks.
Out of curiosity, who would you choose to take over? My choice (assuming James Cameron is otherwise preoccupied) is Neil Blokamp, the director of District 9.
Tobey maguire is the best spiderman he should still be in the movie now the movie is ruined without him!
You are absolutley right I do not want to see this movie
Because tobey is not in it!
This is both lame & confusing. If Raimi didn’t like the direction they were going…then where are they going to go exactly now that he’s gone?
This is also confusing because if they’re delaying the movie a year anyway, wouldn’t that have given Raimi the time he needed to get the project back on track? It seems we’re not getting the full story here on why Raimi’s out of the picture.
Tobey was absolutely perfect as Peter Parker. Raimi nailed everything perfectly in the second one, creating one of the all-time great superhero movies. I could probably stomach replacing Raimi easier than Tobey, JJJ, Aunt May or most of the cast. A recasting ensures the movie won’t feel much like the previous ones, whereas a new director could possibly pull off a film that feels stylistically different but organically connected to the others if he had the same cast.
It sucks that we’ll have to go through the origin again, denying us yet again the fun of seeing a character grow and develop and go on new adventures that the vast majority of the time in comic books and cartoons is devoted to. The origin story is one issue followed up with hundreds of issues. Unfortunately superhero movies are so stuck in origin stories due to the constant rebooting. I’d prefer a different director with the same actors and a sequel story to what we’re getting. I’d prefer a different director and cast with a sequel story. The last thing I want is a new director, new cast AND starting the whole story over at the beginning.
One thing we’ll lose right off the bat with a reboot is the build-up with Dr. Connors, the potential Lizard, that the previous trilogy gave us.
This isn’t like rebooting The Hulk or Fantastic Four. This is like rebooting Batman Begins and expecting it to come out as good. The potential risk is much greater than the potential benefit. The casting could fail as badly as Superman Returns and the script could falter as badly as X3. They could move further away from the comic book into something more shallow and commercialized for the teen crowd. I’m worried they want to make Peter Parker a teen-ager again so they can dumb down things for a younger audience. If they make the grave error of playing down Parker’s nerdiness and making him a confident Robert Downey Jr. type instead, then the movies will be a terrible disappointment.
On the other hand, I’ll definitely give the new creative team a chance and the benefit of the doubt since Spider-Man is a character who’s been translated into different mediums multiple times and seems to come out pretty unscathed most of the time. That’s just how great a character he is. The absolute greatest superhero ever created. Thankfully most creative teams can easily see all the great qualities of the character and don’t tend to change too much when he’s adapted into a new medium.
I think it’s absolute wishful thinking for people to think James Cameron would do the reboot. Last I checked he’s a little busy right now. And he’s surely getting as many offers at this point as Spielberg was after Jaws. Spielberg wanted to direct Superman at one point in his career but since the Salkinds didn’t ask him until after Jaws came out, it was too late and he had too many other offers that interested him more. People seem to want James Cameron to save the Terminator franchise and direct any other number of potential feature film adaptations. Probably because he’s the only name anyone can think of who’s consistently reliable for this sort of movie. But there’s just not enough of him to go around.
Unfortunately the fact that he’s the only director out there we can really count on to deliver a great sci-fi/action film every time just underscores how difficult it’s going to be to find a director who will be able to handle such a major superhero franchise right. If only Cameron could do what Spielberg did in the ’80s, producing tons of films and helping out enough in the production to keep the quality up…back when Spielberg had that great run with Poltergeist, Gremlins, Goonies, Back to the Future, etc., WHILE he was directing E.T., Indiana Jones, etc. Even Spielberg couldn’t keep that momentum up forever though.
While I’m sorry to hear Spidey 4 is off the burner for a moment, it’s a better time than ever to inject fresh life into the megafranchise.
True, Avatar is a juggernaut, but not because of 3D or effects. It’s a great story that the filmmakers took their time to develop.
Now, if only Sony had produced James Cameron’s treatment of Spidey back in the 90s.
But then, he wouldn’t be “King Of The World.”
Avatar had a great story? What on earth are you on about? The script and storytelling are derivative hackwork. It’s just a pretty ride, and an innovative post-production that’ll remain a benchmark for years to come. But that’s all.
Did you perhaps notice that the screenwriter’s guild nominated Avatar for best original screenplay? I think they know a little bit more about the craft of screenwriting than you do. Notice that Transformers 2 did not get nominated. That was a bad screenplay. Avatar is an excellent one.
And Chicago won an Oscar. U’d think those people would kno better than fans too
“True, Avatar is a juggernaut, but not because of 3D or effects. It’s a great story that the filmmakers took their time to develop”
I didn’t realize there were two different 3D Avatar’s out now. I’ll have to see the one you did.
Actually, they have Avatar out in 2D…which sucks cuz thats the one my theater has…would LOVE to see the 3D version
Amazing that there are so many idiots that think sony is doing a good thinh and Raimi was to blame for spidey 2 being the piece of crap it was.
sony will pack the reboot with a dozen bad guys and spider-man will be played by whatever goofball won american idol the year before.
straight up.
Except it IS 100% Raimi’s fault that SM3 was terrible.
He knew FROM THE VERY START that the studio was forcing Venom to be in it. So what did he do? Refuse to work? Deal with it? No, he ruined one of the fan favorite villains and butchered a movie.
Yes, hardly his fault.
It’s his fault that he did what the people that write his checks told him to do? It’s his fault that he had a shitty script to work with? Be realistic, he wasn’t going to leave the whole project and that big payday just because they added someone he didn’t want. But I shudder to imagine how bad the 4th script is when he’s ok with doing three and not four
Now more than ever studios are acting like directors, writers and actors are interchangeable and REPLACEABLE. They are remaking movies such as Romancing the Stone — even though the DIRECTOR Bob Zemeckis is stop a top director… and they’re even talking about REBOOTING Amityville Horror — which was rebooted less than 2 years ago and staring RYAN REYNOLDS (who is the current go-to-guy).
So, I guess we’re going to get ANOTHER ORIGIN story retold AGAIN… yippee!
But since Matt Tolmach never returns an f-ing phone call how can he expect to put Humpty Dumpty together again?
No way in hell am I going to see spiderman 90210. They are making a big mistake here.
What??? Spiderman without Tobey Maguire? You got to be kidding. He played it fantastic even though the last manuscript was lousy. Remove him, what’s left?
I hope they change their mind, using another actor would be so confusing and strange when Maquire has personified Spiderman so thoroughly already.
(I must admit I’m a big fan of Maquire so I’m a bit biased. This is partly because he looks very much like me physically, especially his face and expression. Not that I want to compare myself to him but it’s funny when you suddenly see an actor that could be your twin, weird coincidence LOL
this push to younger and younger demographics is killing Marvel – the dreck and garbage I see on Saturday morning cartoons – children characters versus what is in the comics – is now coming to films – STUPIDITY.
See Leno, 10pm.
flickdude, most of the issues in Spider-Man 3 were caused by the same reasons that made the current team leave.
Sam Raimi had zero interest in adding a third villain in S3, especially Venom, a character he never liked. Sony wanted Venom, because they thought the character would appeal to the teenagers and they were even thinking of doing a spin-off movie with Topher Grace.
Sony tried the very same trick again for S4, by imposing Raimi their chosen set of villains.
When will they learn? Spider-Man might be their franchise but Raimi had proven himself quite good at the job when they didn’t try to interfere and Spider-Man 3 was convoluted because of too many characters. It’s not about giving Sam Raimi full control of the franchise, it’s about determining what works best. Three villains with separate agendas doesn’t work.
If Warner still got some brains, there must be a memo to leave Christopher Nolan alone for the script of the next Batman.
Anyway, Sony can still swap teams with Universal: Greengrass and Damon in charge of Spider-Man, Raimi and Maguire for the Bourne movies.
Sam Raimi was instructed to put Venom in. The people paying the bills wanted it. Nobody told him not to make the best movie possible with Venom. Nobody told him to shoehorn Sandman into the film. Nobody told him to move Green Goblin to the background for half the movie with a total mess of an amnesia subplot. Nobody told him to make the movie he did badly. He did it all by himself. Instead of working with what he had he said “f*ck all” to that and made a bloated, over-indulgent mess of a movie.
If he feels like being giving $300,000,000 to make a comic book movie is such an insult to his artistic integrity then he should move along.
I must be the only person on the planet that’s surprised they didn’t reboot this immediately following the awfulness that was Spider-Man 3.
Thank god. I don’t think I could watch one more movie of my childhood hero dismantled by this creative group. The first one was great for it’s introduction, and some of it’s campy moments fit in a comic book “theme” I guess… but the last two have been sooo damn terrible.
sad to see sam leave the franchise but glad he stuck to his guns and refused to make the same mistakes of three. and hope Sony knows what they are doing rebooting spider man. other wise Disney should really move on taking the rights back from sony before they risk destroying the character for good and Sony should also look to see if they can use Cameron’s script if they can not get him to do spider man.
I think the big item you’re all missing is that someone, somewhere, is stupid enough to make a Pirates of the Carribean 4.
what?
Im very looking forward to a POC 4, hell all three of them were amazing. (though course third was worse then the other two)
but the laughs story we got from that series was nowhere else
Why all the hysteria from fanboys upset over a re-boot. The comic book Spider-Man has had several re-boots and alternate continuities: Ultimate Spider-Man, Chapter One, Earth X.
Get a grip! What’s the big deal? I’m looking forward to a re-boot. I was lukewarm on the first Spider-Man and hated Spider-Man 3, although Spider-Man 2 is perfection in my opinion. And I never thought Tobey was physically right for it, though his performance never bothered me. Kirsten Dunst on the other hand was a terrible Mary Jane. The MJ in the comics was spirited and sassy and sexy, not the self-pitying whiny wet blanket Raimi & Co. made her into. You want to see the right way to do Spidey, check out the most recent animated incarnation, The Spectacular Spider-Man; it gets the characters’ personalities right.
If this happens correctly (ultimates style) could ol petey be a future avengers flick?????????
This is a sad day, I feel like my childhood has been stripped oput of me… It feels like something changed and can’t go back.
These are my fav. movies, they can’t do this!!!
What are they going to do??? put some good looking boy and fill it with sexual themes about high school and make it darker??? It could work… If you’re talking about twilight or the vampire daries, bit this franchise was awesome.
Lets hope everything’s ok, if it ended It was for good… I Hope.
God Bless you all.
If they’re going to reboot the franchise (a damn bloody shame, as the three movies were awesome), Christopher Nolan or Martin Campbell would be the perfect choices to direct the new movie. Nolan revived the “Batman” franchise (though I personally loved the last two movies before “Batman Begins”) and Campbell re-energized James Bond and Zorro (”Goldeneye” & “The Mask Of Zorro,” anyone?)
WTF? We’re going to have to go through another orgin again. He was bitten by a radioactive spider. We get it.
I really think the current cast was good for one more film, and the selling point being 3D.
I don’t think a reboot will be that successful. What are they going to do make it darker. Is that necessary for Spiderman, it’s not Batman. So is the new gimmick they’re going to use a real ninth grader. BFD
You know about Thor and Pirates in May 2011. Disney owns Marvel and now they got interest in both ventures. I’m sure its a win-win situation for them now. How many media companies can openly admit that in this day & age of uncertainty?
Jeesh! This is stupid. Lets reboot The Lord of the Rings as well… where is the creativity Sony? Didn’t you learn anything from Avatar? It’s possible to earn money on something different than Spider Man…
oh ya..its a great idea 2 reboot one of the most successful franchise of the century, how stupid..sam raimi is a big baby..this movie better be extremely excellent..
This is a great idea! Like me moving to 10PM even though I’m king of late night.
I’m happy to see them start anew with this series. The first movie was good but it felt a bit bland, and it’s only gone downhill from there to the point of that mess of a 3rd movie. I remember reading an article where raimi stated he didn’t even like spiderman as a comic.
A new director could do wonders for the franchise, especially with the less campy direction the new marvel movies like IronMan and other have been going.
Reboot corrected the Hulk to an amazing degree and it could do the same for Spidy as long as they hire a good director who can apreciate the source material.
Tobey was shit. I don’t know who’s fault it was. Maybe this is a good thing. The movies don’t do justice to Spidey or the comics. Maybe they get it right this time. Or if not a total reboot at least get to a better direction..
The best news I’ve heard all day. I honestly didn’t think there was a chance that Tobey Maguire was going to leave the franchise. My dreams have come true.
Now if only Marvel could get the rights back.
what about gwen she was a nerd too not a fancy girl
Sony doesn’t care about making a quality film. They want a director they can push around so they can hand-pick the villains for potential spin-offs. And sorry but I can’t see them turning to a control freak like Cameron as that would put them in the exact same position (or a far worse one) as with Raimi.
Well now that it’s done, I say grab Anton Yelchin on the cheap and stick him in the suit. He’s got the perfect dork/geek sensibility to play Peter Parker.
Rebooting the franchise at this point is a terrible idea. Give Raimi a chance to get a script he really likes, and let him shoot Spidey 4. Otherwise the reboot will probably end up like X-men 3, which also booted out its original director, Bryan Singer, and was a terrible movie.
I agree with you totaly!
ahhh…
the reboots’ gonna suck, they always do…
EXCEPT FOR BATMAN!!!!
7-8 years isn’t long enough to warrant a reboot — it’s a do-over.
